GREER RESIDENT BRINGS CHEER

To displaced
families
BY BILLY CANNADA
EDITOR

Several Greer residents

were able to spread some
Christmas cheer to families displaced by the recent wildfires in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge this
week, and it all started
with a holiday disaster at
Lisa Garlands house.
I had gotten a huge
live Christmas tree. It
was so beautiful and Id
gotten all kinds of ornamentsit was exciting,
Garland, owner of Stomp-

ing Grounds Coffee and

Wine Bar in downtown
Greer, said. But we could
not get this thing to level.
My husband and I fought
with it but could not get it
to stand up straight. It was
driving us crazy.
Long story short, we
finally get it settled and
I get all the ornaments
on, and about a day later
the thing comes crashing
down, she said. It was a
two-hour clean up project.
I was really upset because
Id worked so hard on this
tree and it came down. I
just took it out to the curb
and I was done with it.
Thats when Garland
got the ideaan idea that
would change the Christ-

here, I could feel the good
energy in the air. Even
though I was an outsider,
I was embraced by everyone. Everyone in this town

Springwell to host annual Christmas Eve service

BY KATIE CRUICE SMITH
FOR THE GREER CITIZEN
During a time when
darkness seems to be taking over the world, Springwell Church is ready to
shed some light.
On Christmas Eve, at 3
p.m. and 5 p.m., Springwell
Church will be presenting Light of the World, a
family-friendly service for
the whole community.
We want to unpack a
little bit of the darkness in
the world around us, said
Dylan Arms, the worship
director at the church.
People feel hopeless. Our

goal is to show Jesus is

the ultimate light to shine
through the darkness.
As always, Springwell
is planning a service that
will speak to everyone.
Most of the service will be
musical, but Pastor Scott
McAlister will also be sharing a Christmas message.
The creative team has also
put together a video set to
music with seven or eight
people from the worship
team speaking on the video. Childcare for birth to
age three will be provided,
and there will also be door
prizes.
Christmas is one of the

times that people come to

church who usually dont
come to church, said Will
Wright, the technical and
production director. We
want to see life change
happen.
The Christmas Eve service is Springwells biggest
service, averaging around
1,500 people between the
two services. It comes as
no surprise that the creative team puts a lot of
energy into making it one
of the best services of the
year.
We definitely make sure
everything we put from the
stage is clear, said Arms.

By the time people are

dealing with their hurt and
pain, church is their last
resort. We want to make
it clear to that person that
God actually wants to help
us and show grace to us.
Springwell church members go the extra mile from
the beginning to make
sure guests feel welcome
and comfortable.
We want to relate to
them, said Arms. We
want them to look at the
characters on screen and
say that [one of them] relates to my story.
Last year, the Christmas Eve service impacted

focus to something more

positive, she said. I felt
like my Christmas tree dilemma was a sign.
Garland
remembered
reading about displaced
families in Tennessee.
Id watched a video
about a hotel in Pigeon
Forge called the Harbors
at the Islands that had
taken in 54 families that
were displaced by the
fire, Garland said. It was
just unbelievable how sad
this story was.
One of my best friends
house burned down several years ago and it
was probably one of the
most traumatic things I
ever went throughand it
wasnt even my house,
Garland continued. Just
trying to dig through the
stuff and pull anything
out that could be salvaged
was so hard. I remember
my friend saying that the
number one thing she was
upset about losing was her
Christmas tree ornaments
because she had all kinds
of homemade ornaments
that her kids had done
through the years. It was
so sad.
Thats when she decided
to act.
I called the hotel and
talked to the owner, and
they said the bulk of the
families had come from an
apartment complex that
had burned down, she
said. There were lots of

kids and it was a really sad

situation. Talking to him, I
thought, I know that FEMA
and Red Cross are taking
care of their basic needs,
but nobody is talking about
Christmas right now. I just
thought, if I could raise the
money to get each family a
Christmas tree, it could be
something that would give
them some joy.
Garland began tossing
the idea around to area
business owners, eventually starting a GoFund Me
page for the cause.
Wal-Mart in Greer gave
me about 59 trees for $20
a piece, Garland said. We
got artificial, that way they
can use them over and
over. I had one customer
from Stomping Grounds
contact me and say theyve
been looking for a service
project to do with their
kids, and they wanted to
come up and serve hot
chocolate and cookies.
Now, theres a truck coming from Albany, Georgia,
on the same day were going to hand out trees, and
theyve got Christmas toys
for the kids. The hotel
even hired Santa. Its just
amazing.
Businesses pitched in to
help with donations. Nikki
Funk at Shear Faith Salon
donated hygiene products,
and her church provided
50 Bibles for the effort.
I just cannot believe
the response, Garland
said. Just on Trade Street
alone, I bet five companies

have given me money to

purchase things. Its been
crazy.
I saw what Lisa was doing and it made me tear
up, Funk said. I grew up
going to Gatlinburg and I
love Pigeon Forge, and I
just felt like I needed to do
something. Were putting
something extra special
together for the women.
This probably sounds trivial, but if I was a mother
and had just lost everything I had, Id probably
miss my makeup bag and
things like that. We just
wanted to do something
to make those ladies feel
good.
Last Saturday, volunteers loaded trucks with
the donations for the big
delivery on Sunday. Once
there, Garland was overwhelmed by the extent of
the need.
It was humbling, she
said. The folks in Gatlinburg were very grateful,
and naturally it was painful to see what they were
going through up there.
I didnt expect to hear
things like This is the first
Christmas tree Ive ever
had. I didnt expect to see
a lady expecting twins in a
month who is living with
her husband in a motel
room with no kitchen. So
many tragic stories, too
long to mention. But there
were hugs and thank yous
and tears of appreciation,
which meant we achieved
what we set out to do.

several in the community,

who became regular attenders at the church.
But the Christmas Eve
service is not the only way
that Springwell is impacting the community this
year. For the second year
in a row, members and
staff from the church are
participating in 25 Days
of Christmas, which started on Nov. 30 and goes
through Christmas Eve.
Basically, each Sunday,
members in the church
give to a special offering
for 25 Days of Christmas.
Then several members and
staff head out during the

week with a set amount

and head to places like
Aldi or Quality Foods.
Without telling people that
they are from Springwell,
the members simply offer
to pay for groceries, gas,
putting air in their tires, or
paying off lay-aways.
We dont ask them
if they need help, said
Wright. Its more about
telling people about Jesus
love.
Springwell also plans to
hold a Chrismas day service at 11 a.m. that will
be a simple, family-style
service.

THE GREER CITIZEN A3

Be careful
I dont know about you, but nothing
says Merry Christmas more to me than
being left a big ol mason jar of peach
clear on my front deck, along with
instructions scrawled on cardboard, BE
CAREFULL.
Another reason not to cut education
funding.
But I love it, I do, and after receiving
this paint thinner, of which one friend
remarked, drink that and youll learn
exactly how long your esophagus is, Im
dying to know who left it. This year, as
Ive had a critter cam set up since early
fall (I promise Ill buy one of my own,
Jay), I thought, with an air of triumph,
Gotcha! and ran to pull out the chip
and insert into my laptop to see which
of my neighbors has their own bootlegging connections. Well, actually,
pretty much all of them do. In fact, ones
mamma used to throw a 50lb sack of
corn over her shoulder and stomp to the
top of Glassy Mountain and it is a great
source of family pride that she could
make shine every bit as well as the boys.
That kind of made me jealous, feeling

the odd one out, as my parentage is English and German, but I will tell you that
my German grandfather used to travel
to Mexico, cross the Rio Grande and run
liquor during prohibition days, for Dutch

returning to Bavaria where he opened
a successful brewery. So, if you think
about it, in a way, Im a direct descendant of an illegal, drug-running (sort of),
immigrant from Mexico, but Ive yet to
have anyone ask me for my green card,
which is odd.
Anyway, rubbing my hands together
like a squirrel, I eagerly pulled up the
critter cam images to find my culprit.
Nothing. Just Freddy the fox, whom Im
always glad to see with his now resplendent, bushy tail, a raccoon, and once

again, our terrier, Rosie, copping a squat

right next to the lens. And I can tell you
right now, shes getting entirely too
much kibble.
So who has been leaving this? I raise
my eyebrow at my neighbors, by and

Then theres my own church group, Episcopalians, and of course, they all drink
(dont believe them for a second when
you see them at the IGA waiting for it to
turn noon on Sunday, right after church,
when the law allows them to buy beer
and wine, and theyre hanging around,
pretending they need milk), but theyre
far too snobby to drink anything other
than a particularly nice vintage of pinot
noir. And when I start asking around,
everyone feigns ignorance.

When I was a child, my

real difference in my life.
One year they even took me
on vacation with them.
They and other special
people have truly been a
blessing to me.
Their gentleness, thoughtfulness, kindness, and uplifting spirits have inspired me
to become a means for God to
bless others.
As I have grown older, I
have found that being preoccupied with my own problems physical infirmities,
financial troubles, or difficult
relationships can keep me
from seeing the needs of others and stand in the way of
my helping them.
The solution lies in remembering that our God is greater
than our problems.
Knowing that God will take
care of our worries enables us
to shift our focus away from
ourselves and toward helping
others.
Only when we let go of
self-centeredness and become
truly concerned about anothers welfare can we then act to
meet that persons needs.

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They

have been affected by the skepticism of a
skeptical age. They do not believe except they
see. They think that nothing can be which is
not comprehensible by their little minds. All
minds, Virginia, whether they be mens or childrens, are little. In this great universe of ours
man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as
compared with the boundless world about him,
as measured by the intelligence capable of
grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Alas! how dreary would be the world if there

if they did not see Santa Claus coming down,

what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa
Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa
Claus. The most real things in the world are
those that neither children nor men can see.
Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn?
Of course not, but thats no proof that they are
not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all
the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in
the world.
You may tear apart the babys rattle and see
what makes the noise inside, but there is a
veil covering the unseen world which not the
strongest man, nor even the united strength of
all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear
apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance,
can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is
it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there
is nothing else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he

now, he will continue to make glad the heart of
childhood.

Jesus

he Word became flesh and

dwelt among us.
John 1 gives us a beautiful picture of Jesuswho He is
and what He has done.
Verses one and two say, In
the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God. He was
in the beginning with God.
Jesusfully God and fully
manhumbled himself.
Philippians 2:6-7 captures the
moment, though he was in
the form of God, [Jesus] did
not count equality with God a
thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the
form of a servant, being born
in the likeness of men.
And being found in human
form, he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to the
point of death, even death on
a cross, verse eight continues the story.
Verses nine through 11
shows the result, Therefore
God has highly exalted him
and bestowed on him the
name that is above every
name, so that at the name of
Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and
under the earth, and every
tongue confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of
God the Father.
For this reason, we celebrate
Jesus birth every year.
Jesus life has changed my
life from the time I was a little
girl when my parents read the
Bible and prayed with us kids
in family devotions.
God chose me, and I decided
to follow Jesus.
John 1:9-14 says, The true
light, which gives light to
everyone, was coming into the
world.
He was in the world, and the
world was made through him,
yet the world did not know
him.
He came to his own, and
his own people did not receive
him.
But to all who did receive
him, who believed in his name,
he gave the right to become
children of God, who were
born, not of blood nor of the
will of the flesh nor of the will
of man, but of God.
And the Word became flesh
and dwelt among us, and we
have seen his glory, glory as of
the only Son from the Father,
full of grace and truth.
This season, as we celebrate
with family and friends, let us
take some time to remember
the source of true love, joy and
peace.

Duncan approves trail

equipment purchase
By Kaelyn Pfenning
Staff Writer
The Town of Duncan is
planning to improve a local walking trail.
At the regular Dec. 13
meeting, Duncan Town
Council approved the
reading of a resolution allowing the town administrator to enter into a contract with Victor Stanley to
purchase equipment for
the Byrnes Mile at a cost
not to exceed $10,500.
The Byrnes Mile will
have five pocket parks
with
streetscape
and
benches and other equipment, town administrator
Cameron Fant said.
The Byrnes Mile is a onemile sidewalk connecting
the South Carolina Academic Learning Environment (S.C.A.L.E.) walking
trail across from Byrnes
High School, owned by
the school district, to the
walking trail at Stoneledge
Park, maintained by the
town of Duncan.
Theres a lot of people
that walk on the sidewalk,
Fant said. We decided
wed have whats called
the Byrnes Mile.
Victor Stanley, an equip-

ment company out of

Charlotte, is to manufacture the benches, trashcans, potters for plants
and a bike rack for the five
pocket parks.
Some of them will have
potters on them with
plants in them. Itll be real
pretty, Fant said. Well
have a bike rack on one
and a water fountain on
one. Theyre basically to
help promote and encourage people to walk and
exercise and have a place
where they could sit down
and rest for a little bit.
Spartanburg
County
Parks and Recreation Department is putting in
the equipment, Fant said.
Theyve got permission
for the first one, so theyre
going to start pouring a
slab in the next couple of
weeks.
We have to get permission from DOT every time
we want to do a pocket
park because its off the
road right-of-way, Fant
continued. Were still
waiting on DOT to approve
the next one, so what well
do is well do one at a time.
We went ahead and bought
all the equipment at once
because it was cheaper,

and well store that here

until we get ready to put
them out as theyre being
built.
Spartanburg
County
gave Duncan $100,000 to
pay for the construction,
the equipment and to help
maintain it, Fant said, but
after that moneys spent,
then it will be up to the
town of Duncan to maintain it.
Now, were going to
start to see it actually take
off, Fant said, and hopefully by spring and summer time, well have two or
three of them put in place,
and well get to see a lot of
people walking.
A year or two ago, Duncan started the process of
constructing the Byrnes
Mile, Fant said.
In other business, council approved 4-1 the first
reading of an ordinance
to amend the intergovernmental agreement between
Duncan and Lyman.
In a nutshell, this
amendment is to turn over
Duncans sewer collection
system to the Town of Lyman, Fant said.

Martha Bennett, The

Greer Citizens 2013 Citizen of the Year, remains
the operating manager
of Daily Bread Ministries,
which provides services
to homeless families in
downtown Greer.
Daily Bread Ministries
has grown through the
years. In 2013, Bennett
was working to help the
nonprofit raise funds for
a homeless shelter, which
has since been constructed on the property next to
the soup kitchen.
In a 2013 interview, Bennett had a clear vision for
what a homeless shelter
should look like.
We need a shelter here,
ONeal said. If we taught
them a trade, got them

ways to help these people.
Some of them really want

Greer STEP (Shelter to

that, taking in a select few
families at a time, teaching them trades and sending them out with better
skills.

Mother,
Every day without you
Since you had to go
Is like Summer
without sunshine
And Winter without snow
If I could only talk to you
There is so much I would say
Life had changed very much
The day you went away.
I miss the bond between us
I miss all of your support
You are on my mind
and in my heart
With every Christmas thought
I will always feel you
close to me
Though you are so far
from sight
I will look for you

That shine on Christmas night
Let us all family recall
How dearly each of us
loved you
And oh how you loved us all

that goes out, and we just

have a hard time keeping
them on the shelf, Simpler said.
In addition, GCM is seeking consistent supporters
at $20 a month, which
feeds one person in the
Meals on Wheels program
for a week.
$20 in a months time
can
disappear
pretty
quickly, Simpler said.
How powerful it is when
its applied toward helping
someone in need. Certainly, our homebound Meals
on Wheels recipients are
folks who need assistance.
Anyone who is unable to
make a financial donation
can drop off used clothing, make a food donation
or give time at the facility.
All of the clothing that
we give out here, we give,
Simpler said. Its for free.
We do not sell anything.
Particularly
coats
and sweaters and winter
clothing right now is very
important, Simpler continued. Mens and boys
clothing are hard for us to
keep on the shelf.

In the year ahead, GCM

is pursuing grants for
their senior services program, installing handicap
ramps and more to assist
the elderly in living in their
homes and being safe.
Weve been fortunate
in working with some local churches, specifically
Freedom Fellowship, to
be able to have impactful
projects completed, Simpler said. I think theyve
been involved with installing four handicap ramps
in the last four months in
the area.
Were thankful for all
the folks who do support
us so faithfully, Simpler
continued, listing her
thanks for every item of
clothing and food donation. All of that is essential to fueling our operation and allowing us to
serve people in need in the
community.
At this time, Greer Relief
is wrapping up the year
with the inaugural Christmas Morning Shoppe and
is seeking food for the
food pantry shelves.
The Food Pantry shelves
are light and donations
January March are tra-

ditionally low, said Caroline Robertson, Executive

Director for Greer Relief.
We also need financial
support to continue the vision and mission of Greer
Relief to transform neighbors in need to neighbors
who thrive by providing
services to eliminate poverty by helping neighbors
overcome barriers for success.
As of Dec. 14, Greer
Relief had received over
$3,000 in unrestricted
donations for December,
including $1,000 from the
Greer Day Lions Club
We are still $29,000
away from meeting our
2016 Budget for unrestricted funds used to carry out the mission of Greer
Relief, Robertson said.
In the new year, Greer
Relief is expanding the
Reaching Every Neighbor
Every Way (RENEW) program.
We are looking for volunteers to teach Budgeting, Job Skills, Health/
Wellness, Healthy Cooking,
Fitness, and volunteers to
lead other classes, Adult
Coloring, Walking Club,
etc., Robertson said.

Taylors Fire and Sewer raises connection fee

BY KAELYN PFENNING
STAFF WRITER
The Taylors Fire and
Sewer District has increased the sewer tap connection fee by $300.
At the regular Dec. 13
meeting, Taylors Fire and
Sewer District commissioners voted to raise the
fee across the board, with
the only exception being
those who are current septic tank owners.
For current homes on
septic tanks who are connecting to the sewer, the
fee stayed at $525, said
Stephanie Hackler, Bookkeeper/Executive
Assistant. For new constructions, the single family tap
fee was $725 and went to
$1025 etc.
During the meeting, Humayun Raja, who owns
several properties in Taylors, expressed his concerns with the increase in

REPORT
(Note: All information
contained in the following
was taken directly from
the official incident reports
filed by the Spartanburg
Sheriffs Office or the Greer
Police Department. All
suspects are to be considered innocent until proven
guilty in the court of law.)

MULTIPLE CHARGES

Steven Weston Hiott, 27,

was charged with reckless
driving and disorderly
conduct.
According to the Spartanburg County Sheriffs
incident report, an officer
on patrol was dispatched
to Highway 14 and B St. in
Greer for a man down.
Upon arrival, the officer
made contact with Fire/
EMS who were giving assistance to the driver of a
wrecked Buick Regal. The
vehicle had left the roadway and struck a rock and
hillside in front of a paint
store at the above intersection.
EMS was able to revive
the driver, later identified
as Hiott, and there were
no visible signs of head
trauma. He was checked
for other injuries without
finding anything needing
medical attention. Hiott
signed a waiver of medical
treatment with EMS.
The officer then spoke
with Hiott, who was found
to be intoxicated. He
thought he was in Greenville, and did not know
how the accident had occurred. Hiott was arrested and charged with the
above.

DUI

Michael Beaty, 24, was

charged with DUI.
According to the Spartanburg County Sheriffs
incident report, a deputy
on patrol in the Inman
area observed a vehicle
traveling southbound on
Highway 9 at a high rate
of speed. The deputy conducted a traffic stop and
made contact with the
driver, identified as Beaty.
Beaty provided requested
documents to the deputy
without speaking or opening his mouth. The deputy
could detect the odor of
alcohol coming from the
inside of the car.
The deputy returned to
the patrol vehicle to check
Beatys status. The deputy
then repositioned the car
to perform field sobriety
tests.
The
deputy
reapproached Beaty and asked
him if he had anything to
drink and he stated no.
Beaty was asked to step
out of the vehicle to the
front of the patrol vehicle.
The officer could smell alcoholic beverage coming
from Beaty.
The deputy then administered the HGN test,
which Beaty failed.
The deputy then administered the walk and
turn test, which Beaty also
failed. The deputy then
administered the one leg
stand test. Beaty was unable to complete the test
because he said he was
cold and had diabetes. He

The Board explained
to Mr. Raja the history between Rewa and the District, Hackler said. They
explained the intergovernmental agreement we had
with Rewa and the need
to remove I & I [infiltration and inflow] from the
Sewer infrastructure.
In addition, the audit was presented at the
meeting with no findings,
Hackler said. The audit
went very well.

RESOLUTION

Taylors Fire and Sewer

District also approved, 21, a resolution allowing
the district to reimburse
themselves for purchases
made prior to acquiring a
loan.
Back in the budget period in May and June, we
had it in our budget or

attempted to try it but after not being able to maintain his balance he said he
could not do the test and
did not restart it.
Based on the results
of the tests, the deputy
placed Beaty under arrest
for DUI. The deputy then
called EMS to check his
well-being and check his
blood sugar. When EMS arrived, Beaty refused treatment. He was transported
to Spartanburg County
Jail. There he failed to provide a correct breath sample after being repeatedly
told how to do so. Because
Beaty showed no desire to
willfully provide the sample, it was taken as a refusal. Beaty was issued all
applicable paperwork and
a notice of suspension for
refusal to provide a breath
sample.

POSSESSION

Hailey Brooke Holt, 20,

was charged with simple
possession of marijuana.
According to the Spartanburg County Sheriffs
incident report, an officer
on patrol was traveling
South on Rainbow Lake
Road. The officer noticed
a gold Honda traveling in
front that had a non-functioning brake light and
ran the tag number of the
vehicle before initiating a
traffic stop. The tag came
back as belonging to a
Dodge Ram truck and was
also showing as suspended for cancellation of insurance. The officer then
initiated a traffic stop.
The driver of the vehicle,
identified as Holt, stated
the vehicle belonged to a
passengers mother. Holt

several different items for

the sewer side and what
was best deemed necessary is that we would need
to secure a loan for those
instead of going out with
our cash reserves, Hackler said.
Were not being obligated to get the loan, Hackler continued. This is just
stating if we do get a loan,
we can go back 60 days
prior and reimburse ourselves for anything that we
bought on the budget that
wed already stated and already been approved.
Equipment needed included a pump station generator for $100,000, so
that we will be in compliance with DHEC, and that
will be a portable generator that can go from each
station if we have an ice
power failure or anything
like that, said Samantha
Bartow, Director of Sewer
Services.

Additional equipment
included a 4-wheel drive
crew truck for the sewer
department not to exceed $45,000, a tri-axle
dump truck not to exceed
$172,000 as well as a trailer and tractor.
The dump truck is because its bigger than the
truck we currently have,
Bartow said. Were asking for a bigger track hoe.
Because of the track hoe
size, the current dump
truck that we have will not
pull it, so that is the dump
truck, trailer and tractor is
the last three things.
These therefore have
been deemed necessary
expenses? asked Doug
Wavle, chairman of the
commissioners.
Yes, that was all approved in the budget,
Hackler said. We went
through the budget workshop in May. All of this
was in the budget. We just

havent secured the loan

yet.
But we needed to go
ahead and purchase, with
2017 coming, you can
get a significant savings
on the 2016 equipment
or 2017 equipment that
are having specials right
now, Hackler continued.
We wanted to go ahead
and purchase two of the
items prior to the loan,
and then well reimburse
ourselves back if you guys
pass this resolution. If not,
then that would come out
of operating budget.
The track hoe and 25ton trailer, which cost together about $200,000,
are the equipment to be
purchased prior to obtaining a loan, if one is obtained, Hackler said. Of
course, this is equipment
that will be an asset over
the years.
I struggle with it because I personally dont

like to spend money I

dont have, Wavle said.
We dont buy cars on interest. Everything is paid
for. It just goes contrary
to my personal feelings of
going into debt with the
intent of, oh, were going
to get it back.
When the vote came,
Wavle opposed the motion
to approve the resolution.
In light of the renewable water resource issue,
were trying not to spend
cash on hand when we can
spread these payments out
over five years with a nominal interest rate, Hackler
said. We need the cash
on hand to help with the
renewable water resource
concerns and the I/I.
Taylors is also working

Bartow said.

not have insurance. A consent to search the vehicle
revealed two blue baggies
that contained a green

be marijuana, between the
drivers seat and center

the marijuana belonged,
Holt stated it was hers.

The suspect provided a total of ten variations of her

MULTIPLE CHARGES

David Dean Smith, 54,

of 103 Banner Dr., Greenville, was charged with
habitual offender, driving
under suspension third
and above, possession of
drug paraphernalia and
tag altering. A warrant was
also issued for possession
methamphetamine.
According to the Greer
City police incident report,
an officer on patrol near
the intersection of U.S. 29
and Dill Creek Avenue observed a blue Ford truck
with an altered tag. As the
officer noticed this, the
truck suddenly darted into
the left turn lane. The officer turned on blue lights
and pulled the driver over.
The officer made contact
with the driver, identified
as Smith. When the officer
asked for Smiths license,
he replied that it was expired. The license was
run through dispatch and
it was found that Smith
was DUS 7th and had two
active habitual offender
statutes listed on his DMV
history.
Smith was removed from

BY BILLY CANNADA
SPORTS EDITOR

During a high school

football season of highs
and lows, several local
players had the opportunity to prove themselves
against some of the best
competition in the state.
The Greer Citizen and
Owens Insurance honored
more than 30 athletes as
Player of the Week in 2016,
but five players stood out
among the crowd.
Those in the running for

Jones had 52 first hits,

45 assisted tackles and 14
tackles for loss, along with
two forced fumbles.
He led our defense in
most categoriestackles,
tackles for loss, Byrnes
coach Phil Magdic said.
We keep a head hunter
chart that adds up all
these categories and he
gained the most points in
that too.
Jones has been offered
scholarships from Wisconsin, Northwestern and
Duke.
Hes one of the smartest kids weve got, and it
says it all that hes gotten offers from Duke and
Northwestern,
Magdic
said. By the end of the
year, he was one of the
leaders, and next year hell
be the leader. Hes got a
good head on his shoulders, but he leads on the
field too. Hes one of our
best.

CHANCE PRIDE Eastside

Chance led Class AAAA

in total yardage with 39
rushes for 331 yards and
caught 100 balls for 1510
yards, head coach Steve

the stats speak for themselves.
Pride also returned three
kickoffs for touchdowns,
making a name for himself
as one of the most dangerous special teams threats
in the Peach Blossom region.

SAMMONS
Jason Sammons

Chance is a great athlete and one of the most

exciting players that has
been in this area for a long
time, Wilson said.

He also had a kick return
average of 17.8 yards and
was named to the All-Region team.
Morrow has also been
impressive in the classroom, accumulating a 3.34

Robert is the epitome
of what we want a Warrior to be, said Riverside
coach Travis Pitman. His
work ethic is unmatched.
He tries to master his
craft. He sets the pace for
our entire program in the
weight room, on the field,
and in the classroom. He
is an example for not
only our players but for
students throughout our

Sammons also served as
the teams long snapper,
returned punts and kickoffs, and played some free

NOAH HANNON Greer

Hannon has taken the

stigma of anonymity away
from the offensive lineman position, making a
name for himself in 2016.
Beginning the season
as one of the featured
athletes in Friday Night

Rebels ready
to repeat
BY BILLY CANNADA
SPORTS EDITOR
Theyve been there.
Theyve won it. Now, the
focus is on getting back.
The defending Class
AAAA state champion Byrnes boys basketball team
has plenty of goals for
the new year, and getting
back to Columbia is one of
them.
The Rebels have worked
their way to a 6-2 start in
the early going, only falling to Westside and Mallard Creek.
We lost some really
good players from that
team last year, head
coach Layne Fowler said.
We had seven seniors that
really contributed a lot, so
there have been some big
shoes to fill.
The Rebels lone returning starter from that state
championship team is
Hayden Brown, a player
Fowler will rely on heavily
this year.
Hes really flourished in
taking over the leadership
role, not just in his playing
but in the locker room,
Fowler said. Hes such a
good player. Hes a versatile player. You wouldnt
believe what hes able to
do on the floor when you
talk about getting team-

mates involved. He has to

take that role for us to be
good.
Brown went to work during a recent game against
Cardinal Newman, having what his coach called
one of the top five games
ever played by a Byrnes
player, with 31 points, 12
rebounds and five assists.
There is a comfort level
with him out there, he
said. To keep elevating
our program, youve got
to have guys like Hayden
Brown. He might be a once
in a lifetime player for me
as a coach, but he really
has totally stepped up.
Dreek
Morgan,
the
teams other senior captain, has also been a big
contributor in the first
eight games.
He played for us last
year as a junior, Fowler
said. He was one of our
first guys off the bench,
but his role has increased
so much this year. Hes
stepping up. Hes already
had four games in double
figures and hes always going to draw the toughest
assignment defensively.
Davonte Wright is starting at point guard for Byrnes.
Hes doing a really

Christmas, Ive
decided I want to be
your guide as you sort
through all of the holiday
movie choices. There are
good ones out there, but
there are also some really,
really bad ones.
So, as you get set to
spend the next few days
cooped up with family
and friends, hopefully
youll find this Christmas
movie list helpful. Dont
worry, Im not going to be
one of those silly hipsters
that names Die Hard and
Gremlins among my favorite Christmas movies.
Thats blasphemy.
The good:
These Christmas movies
are movies you shouldve
already seen at this point
in the holiday season.
They are solid films that
are good enough to watch
multiple times, but you
dont have to save them
for peak Christmas movie
watching times.
These movies include:
The Santa Clause (who
doesnt love Tim Allen?),
Home Alone (notice I
didnt say Home Alone
IIthat falls under great
Christmas movie), Elf,
Christmas Vacation and
Jingle All The Way.
Any time you pop one
of these movies into a
DVD player, youre making a good decision. They
all provide something
a little different. With
Home Alone, Christmas
Vacation and Jingle All
The Way, youre getting
quality slapstick humor
with wonderful bonuses,
such as Joe Pescis family friendly curse words,
Sinbads portrayal of
the Dementor and Clark
Griswalds classic oneliners. As someone who
quotes these movies
extensively, Im OK with
folks who choose to
watch these at any point
in the year.
Go easy on the Pepsi,
Fuller!
The bad:
INCOMING: I am about
to write some very hot
takes. If you dont want to
hear me insult your favorite Christmas movie, just
skip to the next portion of
this column.
Can I just say, I have no
use for movies like Its
a Wonderful Life, White
Christmas and Miracle on
34th Street. I know some
of your heads just exploded, but for me, these films
are tedious and it feels
like more people just
watch them in the spirit
of tradition (which theres
nothing wrong with. I love
tradition). Im not going
to waste an evening with
Bing Crosby or George
Bailey when I can watch
Tim Allen crankily deliver
presents as Santa Claus. If
you choose to spend your
time watching these films,
I wont judge you, but Ill
probably nap through it.
The great:
Only a few movies
here, but over the years
Ive come to love films
like Home Alone II (the
rare instance where the
sequel is better than the
original), How The Grinch
Stole Christmas and all
those claymation Christmas movies. With the
exception of Home Alone,
the films listed here have
been Christmas staples
for years. Improve your
holiday season by watching any of these.
The sacred:
There is one more
category. Sacred Christmas movies. This list only
includes three films: A
Christmas Story, Charlie
Brown Christmas and A
Muppets Christmas Carol.
Watch any of these before
Christmas Eve and youre
doing it wrong. These are
the best of the best, and
will fill your home with
all the joy you need on
Dec. 24. Before you start
playing A Christmas Story
on repeat, give the others
a watch. Youll be glad
you did.

BY MARK VASTO

s the playoff picture

shapes up, New York
Giants would like to
remind you that the Dallas Cowboys havent won
anything worth shouting
about yet.
The Giants, however,
have to know all too well
that their plan on offense
most closely resembles
something you would
find on a typical JV high
schools squad: have your
good quarterback throw
passes to your great wide
receiver the ENTIRE game
or die trying. There is no
doubt that Eli Manning is
one of the games all-time
great quarterbacks, and
Odell Beckham Jr., even if
he never catches another
pass, will still be rembered as having the best
start of any wide receiver
in NFL history. But how
long can the Giants go
with this game plan?
Actually, the better
question to ask is how
deep can the Giants go
in the playoffs with that
plan and zero running
game. True, there is a
certain charm to the Manning-Beckham plan. For
one thing, you dont need
to be a technical football
wiz to understand what
is going on there. Theyre
calling the same plays you
did when you huddled
up in your backyard as a
kid: You get open, and I
will throw the ball to you,
and then you just outrun
everybody and score. Got

A SPORTING VIEW

it? OK! Break!

For the time being,
this strategy has largely
worked. Thats because
Odell Beckham Jr. is just
that good. He is a game
breaker, he is young and
healthy, he can catch,
hes a fierce competitor,
and hes got turbo jets.
As long as the Giants
truly superb defense is
around, the G-men can
get away with this plan.
As for Dallas, the team
that beat everyone but
the Giants, they still
have one of the greatest
offensive lines in modern
times. They dont just
give rookie sensation Dak
Prescott time to throw
... they give him enough
time to drop back and
meditate, write a little bit
in his journal, eat a yogurt with fruit on the bottom (ya know, the kind
you have to stir), call to
check in on his mama
and decide he needs to
buy a house out in Hackensack before throwing
a pass. But when he ends
up on the short end of
a throwback 10-7 game
against the Giants, people
jump to conclusions.
Seven points? Is that all
you get for your money?
The question there is
whether Dallas fans and
Romo-smitten owner
Jerry Jones will have the
patience to stick with
the kid once theyre in

the playoffs. After all, if

youre going to use Romo,
the clock is ticking. At
best, has about two seasons left before he succumbs to chronic, lifelong
pain. But it would seem
such a waste of time to
try and develop Prescott
only to bail on the guy
come playoff time. If
the franchise is eyeing
another dynasty, itd be

foolish to jump off that

Patriot-esque potential
10-year train.
Dallas should look at
Romo as being the best
backup quarterback since
Johnny Unitas. He can still
chip in. Weve seen him
play long enough to know
by now that if he cant
drive the Cowboys with a
broken back, at least he
can polish the fenders.

The North Greenville

womens basketball suffered a 108-92 loss to
Benedict College on Tuesday night, wrapping up the
2016 portion of the teams
schedule.
The Crusaders shot
40.9 percent as a team on
Tuesday night and took
a 12-point lead after the
opening quarter. The Tigers fought back in the
second quarter and pulled
to within four but the Crusaders were able to maintain a small advantage as
they carried a 49-45 lead
into halftime.
North Greenville extended the lead to six
just 30-seconds into the
third quarter but Benedict quickly pulled even
at 51-51 with 7:50 left in
the third. The Tigers and
Crusaders would then
battle to the tune of eight
lead changes and six lead
changes. Benedict then
created some separation
late in the third, closing
out the final minute with
a 9-5 run to put NGU in a
79-73 hole.
The Tigers, which shot
48-percent overall and 50percent from three-point

range took advantage of a

North Greenville offense,
which struggled to find
points in the second half.
The Crusaders shot 35.7percent in the last two
quarters, hitting just 13
of their 36-shots as Benedicts once small lead had
ballooned to 18-points
with North Greenville trailing 104-86.
The Crusaders cut the
lead to 13-points but with
only 54-seconds left in the
game. The turning point of
the game came at the free
throw line where the Tigers knocked down 24 of
27 free throws while North
Greenville hit 12-shots of
just 19 from the charity
stripe. Benedict also outscored the Crusaders in
second chance points and
points in the paint.
NGU had four players in
double-figures including
Karen Donehew who led
the team with 22-points.
Mychala Wolfe added
21-points, a career high
for her at NGU. Cameron
Carter scored 16-points,
notching 10 free throws
while Jessica Garlington
scored 12-points.
North Greeville falls to
3-7 overall after the nonconference loss to Benedict. The Crusaders will
break for Christmas before returning to the court
to take on Barton College
on Jan. 3. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Wilson, North Carolina.

JACKETS: Expecting strong region play

FROM B1

the more important goal

down the road, and whatever gets us ready for
that, were up for the challenge.
Gravley is one of 10 juniors on this years team,
which includes preseason
region Player of the Year,
Cam
Woodruff,
Kyle
Moore, Tyric Flemming,
Delmar Moore, Chris Davis and Ryan Pearson, to
name a few.
I feel like there are a
whole bunch of expectations, but I think we can
be a lot better, Woodruff
said. Its been hard for us
right now, but were coming together and by the
time region play comes,
well be good.

MAGIC TOUCH

Greer isnt only relying

on its juniors for success.
The Jackets are also benefitting from some new
talent they hope will add a
dynamic that wasnt previously there.
Its kind of different because I am the younger guy
on the team, sophomore
transfer Magic Moody
said. That makes it a little
bit harder for us to come
together, but were only
going to get better and
stronger.
With his ability to get to
the basket, Moodys slashing capabilities will be a
welcome sight for Greer
during region play.
Coaches have told me
that I need to work on my
shot and my ball handling,
and Ive done that over the
years, he said. I feel like
Ive evolved into a better
guard because of it.
I just want to have an
overall game where Im
getting better at everythingball handling, shootingI just want to be the
best I can be at everything
on the court, he said.
Moody made a name for
himself at Greer Middle
before transferring during his freshman season.
Returning to the Yellow
Jackets, however, was a
top priority for the sophomore.
It was difficult being
away from where I grew
up and all of my friends,
Moody said. I always used
to come to the games and
watch them play, so coming back to play with them
has been something Ive
wanted to do ever since I
left.

tempo, Fowler said. We

try to play pretty quick
and he gets us up and
down.
Fowler said he will also
be looking for other players to step up, such as
TreyVon Davis.
So far, theyve stepped
up and met all the challenges, he said. Its going to be up and down at
times, but I do think even
our young guys are contributing really valuable
minutes.
Although repeating as
state champions is the
goal, Fowler said it will be
a tough road this year.
Everybody keeps asking, do you think you
have a chance to repeat?
and I just dont know, he
said. God knows were
trying, and these kids are

working very hard. You
hope youve coached kids
and developed them well
enough so that they can
step up into those roles
and be successful.
That tough road includes
a brutal Class AAAAA region schedule.
Dorman is preseason
No. 1 in the state. Boiling
Springs, Gaffney, Spartanburgtheyre all very good
opponents, Fowler said.

You dont go into any of

these games thinking its
going to be an easy win.
Having seen plenty of
success in the last five
years, Fowler said hell
never forget how far this
team has come.
Its been a blessing to
have the guys that built
our program from the
year we were 7-16 to now,
where weve got one of
the better programs in the
state, he said.
I really feel like we can
sustain our program,
Fowler continued. I dont
think were just going to
be a flashy team that wins
it one time. I know there
are lots of good teams
that never get there, so
we dont take anything for
granted.

GETTING BETTER

Coming off a breakout

2015 season, Woodruff
and Gravley said their
games have developed
over the offseason.
Ive gotten more confident as the season has
gone on, Woodruff said.
Hopefully that continues
and Ill continue to improve my shot.
Weve really started to
realize whats at stake,
Gravley said. Our high
school careers are slowly
coming to an end, whether
we like it or not. We know
its going to take getting in
the weight room and getting more shots up to get
better.
Last season, Greer was
a team that lived and died
by the three-point-shot at
times. While the Jackets
will still look to light it
up behind the arch, Greer
will be focusing more on
the physical aspects of the
game.
Were a different team,
Woodruff said. Weve got
some more superstars and
were playing with a little
bit better IQ.
We still lean on the
three sometimes, but we
can get to the rim now,
Gravley said. We have to

THE GREER CITIZEN B5

Community effort makes Cops for Tots a success

BY JOEL FITZPATRICK
FOR THE GREER CITIZEN
Moms, dads, grandparents and other family
members formed a line
that wrapped around a local Greer business Saturday morning.
It may have been cold
and wet, but complaints
werent heard. Inside, the
little children they brought
with them were being given Christmas early as the
annual Cops for Tots was
taking place.
A fixture in Greer for
nearly three decades, the
event is held annually by
the Greer Police Department and gives less fortunate children the opportunity to choose from
hundreds of toys made
possible by donations
from businesses and individuals throughout the
community.
I started here 24 years
ago, and they had a similar type program that was
called the same thing,
said Lt. Jim Holcombe, of
the Greer Police Department. But back then we
werent able to help anywhere near this many
families. At the peak, we
had 600 kids. Greer Relief
does a program in which
they help entire families,
which has decreased our
numbers. Thats a good
thing.
The numbers this year
were a little different from
past years.
The donations are up a
little bit, but the number
of kids are actually down a
little bit, Holcombe said.

We are just blessed. We

have a lot of good volunteers who have donated
time, money and toys.
Businesses really went out
of their way this year because our golf tournament
didnt bring in what we
needed to.

VENUE CHANGE

The event is usually

held at City Hall, but an
oversight this year left the
police department looking
elsewhere as City Hall had
already been booked by
the time organizers realized they hadnt booked
the space.
Enter sisters Sharon
Murry and Sarah Betancourt, who moved to the
area from Colorado and
own The Spinning Jenny,
located at 107 Cannon
Street in Greer. When the
Greer Recreation Department stepped in and offered to help find a new
venue, the sisters were
ready to step up.
Its super exciting,
Murry said. We are glad
that they asked us, and
are glad to be a part of
it. There are a lot of kids
who wouldnt be able to
have Christmas if people
in this community werent
so generous, especially the
police officers. We were
looking forward to seeing
all the kids come in.
For Betancourt, seeing
the community come together to make a difference in the lives of children was confirmation
that the move to Greer was
the right one.
Everyone struggles with

having a sense of community, Betancourt said.
So when you come into a
town that strives for that,
its really refreshing.

basketball team had gotten in late the night before
after playing at Dorman,
but that wasnt going to
prevent the team from being involved. Head coach
Greg Miller began bringing
his teams over when we
coached at Riverside, and
continued the tradition
when he arrived at Greer
last year.
A parent at Riverside
told me it was a volunteer opportunity I should
look into, Miller said. After about 10 minutes of
watching the players walk
around and do that with
the young kids, I knew it
was something we were
going to do every year. It
shows the guys that there
is something more than
basketball, but that basketball playing puts them
in a position where kids

look up to them.
Every year after this, I
notice the kids become a
little more personable with
strangers and little kids
who come to the games.
They realize they are
held to a higher standard,
which is a great thing.
This was the second
year that senior basketball
player Andy Bryson was
involved.
I love this, Bryson said.
Coming out here and giving back to the community
is really fun. These kids
faces light up when they
see all the toys. Last year
was my first time doing
it, and I was really looking forward to it. I used
to volunteer in Downtown

Greenville during Christmas feeding the homeless

and things like that, and
really love doing things
like this.
Bryson formed an immediate bond with one of the
children he helped pick
out presents with.
He started talking about
sports, so it was cool right
off the bat, Bryson said.
We had a lot of things in
common.
Brysons younger teammates were having just as
much fun.
I feel like I am a little kid
when Im walking around
with them, freshman Mczavion Holley said. Its
like I grew up with them
and have known them for

a long time. I just want to

give everyone a good experience.
Little girls also had new
friends to walk around
and shop with, including
Miss Greer High Emma
Kate Ryhmer.
When I won the title
through my school, one of
things I was asked to do
was complete community
services hours, Rhymer
said. I was chosen to do
this, and it is a really awesome experience. I love
Christmas, and especially
helping kids have a great
Christmas.

BY KAELYN PFENNING
STAFF WRITER
Local daycare students
brought Christmas cheer
to a nursing home in Greer
last week.
Three and four-year-olds
from Country Day School
visited Brushy Creek Rehabilitation and Healthcare
Center last Wednesday to
sing Christmas carols and
deliver ornaments.
We love going, said
Tracy Callaway who teaches the 4-year-olds, the oldest class in the school. Its
good for the kids. Its good
for the residents.
Chasity Lave, who teaches the 3-year-old class,
joined Callaway. Classes
from the school began
visiting the nursing home
while Allison Brown was
the activity director since
she also has children in
the daycare.
Last year, we caroled
from cottage to cottage,
but this year they have a
new activities director, so
were still trying to learn
each other, Callaway
said.
This year, the classes
gathered in front of a
Christmas tree in a large

room where a number of
nursing home residents
came together.
They practice for a good
month on those songs, and
they get to wear their cute
little Christmas clothes,
Callaway said. Its a good
way to teach them how to
give back to the community. Each one of them got
to make one [ornament].
For the past three or
four years, the children

have gone trick-or-treating

in October and caroling in
December.
For Halloween, they get
to wear their little costumes, and that makes
the residents happy cause
they get to see all the different costumes, and the
kids like it because they
get candy, Callaway said.

COUCH THEATER

BY SAM STRUCKHOFF

NEW RELEASES
FOR THE WEEK OF JAN. 2
PICKS OF THE WEEK

Blair Witch (R) -- The

1999 horror sensation that
forged nightmares out of
a pocket-change budget
gets a real-deal sequel for
these dark digital days.
James (James Allen McCune) leads an expedition
into Marylands Black Hills
Forest to find information about what happened
to his sister, who disappeared during the events
of the original Blair Witch
Project. Once again seeing
the story through found
footage, we get shaky
panicked angles on the action as the explorers get
deeper into the woods.
This sequel (the bumbling Blair Witch 2: The
Book of Shadows that
came out in 2000 is technically a sequel, but works
better as a parody) stays
pretty devoted to the
original, but makes ill-advised changes along the
way. The original had zero
gore, an unseen monster
and a guy standing in a
corner as the climax of visual scares. This new one
offers more intense scares
and more characters to
soak up the suffering, but
each tweak puts it further
from the DIY terror that
made things work in the
first place.
Denial (R) -- In 2000,
American historian Deborah Lipstadt (Rachel Weisz)
was taken to court in London for libel because of
her outspoken criticism of
holocaust deniers, particularly David Irving (James
Spall), a British historian
who argued that there
were never any gas chambers and that the genocide
was a massive hoax. In the
English court system, the
burden of proof is on the
accused, so her trial -- in
which she must silently
watch her lawyers handle
the proceedings -- involves not only defending
her right to stand against
those who disagree with
her, but also proving the
holocaust happened.
Wrestling with the echos
of the holocaust is the
perennial Oscar bait, but
once you get passed that,
you can see a surprisingly
engaging courtroom drama with a strong hero-villain conflict by Weisz and
Spall. While Spalls Irving
is a hateful condescending anti-Semite, hes not
to be taken as a dummy -its frightening to see how
much power he gets from
false information and
gaming the legal system.
Middle School: The
Worst Years of My Life
(PG) -- Clean-cut troublemaker Rafe (Griffin Gluck)
gets transferred to a new
school run by an uptight
rule-obsessed
principal
(Andrew Daly). As a mischievous and harmless
young dude, Rafe does not
like rules, so he makes it
his mission to break every
rule in the code of conduct
with a string of high-profile pranks (think largerscale than a whoopee cushion, but not as subversive
as Bart Simpson.) Director
Steven Carr gives the liveaction shenanigans a Disney-channel sitcom vibe
while splicing in some
animation. A few good comedians in the cast may
appeal to grownups, but
much of their talent is
smothered by the uneven
direction.

anchester By the
Sea is a penetrating
drama about loss,
isolation and loyalty. Its
probably the most honest
and well-acted film Ive
seen in 2016, and brings a
heavy plate of emotional
substance to the table.
Though the work features
top-shelf turns by the
entire cast and crew, it is
writer/director Kenneth
Lonergan and actor Casey
Affleck who are most
responsible for making
Manchester such an
unforgettable film.
Affleck stars as Lee
Chandler, a divorced loner
who works maintenance
for an apartment building
near Boston. One day, he
is summoned to the small
seaport town of Manchester when his older brother
Joe dies of a heart attack.
Upon learning of Joes
wishes for him to care for
Joes 16-year-old son, Lee
is reawakened and forced
to deal with an unfamiliar
present and a familiarly
devastating past.
Not many have seen
Lonergans 2011 film,
Margaret, but if you
have, you know that he
is a terrific director with
a knack for dialogue.
Manchester By the Sea is
so rich and eloquent that
its hard to believe it was
never a novel. The screenplay is simply terrific,

illuminating the talent
that garnered Lonergan a
Pulitzer Prize nomination
for scripting the play The
Waverly Gallery back in
2000.
Though the movie does
go about 20 minutes too
long, the director shows
exceptional control
over his subject matter.
Especially impressive is
Lonergans use of flashbacks to advance his plot
and characters. These
sequences are the movies
most harrowing, especially the powerhouse scene
that explains why Lee is

Zero-calorie drinks no
match for water
DEAR DR. ROACH: I
walk 30-60 minutes about
four times a week and
drink several times from
a water bottle that I carry
with me. Would it be OK
to occasionally substitute
caffeine-free diet soda for
the water?
ANSWER: Ive talked a
few times about diet soda,
and the controversy about
whether it helps people
lose weight or whether,
despite having zero calories, it makes people
more likely to gain weight.
There has been evidence
for both.
A recent and fascinating
study was published showing that artificially sweetened beverages predispose
a person to higher blood
sugars, and that the effect
was due to changes in the
bacteria in our gut (called
the microbiome). These
bacteria have become the
focus of intensive study
of how important they are
for our overall health.
I recommend against
habitual use of artificially
sweetened beverages. Occasional use of diet soda
is unlikely to harm much;
however, water -- still or
bubbly, plain or with a
wedge of fruit -- is the best
and most natural way to
hydrate.

having bypass surgery
soon. After my surgery,

my heart? I know I will be
walking every day. -- G.J.S.
ANSWER:
L-arginine,
an amino acid, has been
shown to increase nitric
oxide in blood vessels of
people with high blood
cholesterol and blockages
in their arteries. There are
two studies I know of that
showed no effect from arginine on blood flow or inflammation. On the other
hand, one study showed
that supplements of arginine, along with phytoestrogens, B vitamins and
vitamins C and E (as part
of a medical nutrition bar)
in people with angina improved some blood flow
measurements and the
ability to exercise on the
treadmill. It also has been
shown to have some benefits in people with heart
failure.
Based on these studies, I
dont recommend arginine
after cardiac bypass surgery. However, there may
some benefit, and since it
is unlikely to be harmful,
I wouldnt try to dissuade
someone who wanted to
give it a try.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I
had radiation treatment in
2011 for a goiter. I know
tanning beds are very dangerous, but are spray tans
dangerous for me? -- V.V.
ANSWER: Dihydroxyacetone, the most common
coloring agent in spray-on
tans, is generally considered safe, but you should
avoid getting it around
your eyes, mouth and
nose. There is some controversy, but the Food and
Drug Administration has
considered it safe.
The radiation treatment
for goiter slightly increases risk for cancer, especially leukemia. I think it
reasonable to do what you
can to reduce cancer risk,
but I dont think tanning
spray is a big risk.

North Greenville professors announce retirement

Sepko,
Drummond
leaving
BY BILLY CANNADA
EDITOR
Two longtime North
Greenville University English professors are walking away, Dr. Cathy Sepko
and Dr. Julia Drummond
announced their retirement at the end of the fall
semester.
Its been 20 of the best
years of my teaching life,
Sepko said. I knew that I
wanted to end my career
as a college teacher and
North Greenville was the
perfect place for me.
Sepko, who has been
with North Greenville since
1996, served as the keynote speaker for the fall
commencement on Dec.
9. She has held various

faculty positions, including dean of the College of

Humanities, faculty chair,
and faculty marshal during her time at NGU.
Being in those positions
allowed me to hire many
faculty who taught English, History, Political Science and Spanish. It was a
great opportunity to get to
know all of those people
while we were building so
many degree programs,
Sepko said. We were colleagues, friends and fellow Christians. We really
believed in the integration
of faith and learning. It
was the greatest group of
people I ever had the opportunity to work alongside.
Sepko has also been directly involved in the creation of a number of degree programs, academic
departments, and several
courses, such as Advanced
Grammar and Style, American Folklore, Literature
Theory, Appalachian Literature, and Honors Pro-

gram seminars.
She has received a variety of teaching honors, including the South Carolina
Independent Colleges and
Universities Excellence in
Teaching Award.
Prior to NGU, Sepko
served as the director of
Christian Education and
Youth in West Virginia
for four years, an adjunct
English instructor at West
Virginia State University
for three years, and a secondary education teacher
for 17 years.
She earned a bachelors
degree in English language
arts education at West Virginia Tech, a masters in
English and mass communication at Marshall University, and a doctorate
in curriculum and instruction/English education at
Clemson University.
Sepko enjoys genealogical and folklore research,
writing memoirs, and
spending time with her
grandchildren.
Im a storyteller by

nature, she said. Its

something Ive always enjoyed.
Active in her church, she
has taught both Sunday
school and womens Bible
studies. She is beloved by
her current and past students, as well as her colleagues.
She and her husband Ken
have a son and a daughter-in-law, Micah and Katie Sepko, who are both
employees at NGU. They
also have a foster son who
resides in West Virginia.
Sepko said she felt like it
was the right time to retire,
citing health concerns.
I was diagnosed with a
kind of blood cancer eight
years ago and Ive taken
chemo medication every
day, Sepko said. If it
werent for the health issues, I would have continued teaching. For me, the
biggest part of my decision was that I wanted my
last students to remember
me as good a teacher as
my very first students did

a doggie costume contest.
Led by Captain Lesa

itself. Their fundraising
total earned Berry Shoals
the Golden Paw trophy
for first place in highest

A Letter from Santa

ts my favorite time of
year, and its finally here!

Thank you, dear children, for

all of your wonderful letters
and kind words. I hope you
have found ways to help others as you celebrate this marvelous Christmas season.
Youll be happy to know
that the list has been checked
twice, the reindeer are well-fed
and ready to go, and there are
plenty of special gifts waiting
to be delivered.
But before you open those
shiny presents under the
Christmas tree, take a moment to be thankful for those
around you. Christmas is a
loving, honest and charitable

time, and the best

Christmas present
you can give yourself is
the feeling that youve
done something nice for
someone else.
Please remember
the most important
things this holiday
season: your faith,
your family and fellow
man.
Dont worry about all of
the Shopkins, basketball goals,
electronics and toysIll take
care of that.
Yours truly,

Santa Claus

P.S.:
Please dont forget
the cookies and milk this
year. A few of you did not
remember this last Christmas
and I was so hungry by the

CHRISTMAS WISH LIST
Santa this wish list isnt all
about me its also about the
poor and the world. Its a lot to
take in so read it slowly, and
you can do it.
1st try to make it snow, because everyone deserves a day
off. Also everyone likes snow.
And it will be easy for you to
get around Santa.
2nd food and money to the
poor. Some People starve to
death. Also some people some
need money to buy food. So
any kind could be good.
And last but not least World
peace.AII of the people dieing.
The wildfires need to stop.
Please stop all of this.
Im not going to lie its going
to be hard but I believe in you
just try please. Cant wait to
see Elfy.
Daniel Brown
Dear Santa,
I cant wait for you to come
here this year. My Christmas
list is a little different, its not all
about me but about the world.
The world has many different
problems happening. I hope
you can make our world great
again.
My first wish is for, Anyone
to feel lonely. People feel lonely because they sit by themselves. When their familys
died in their life. And people
who needs someone to care
for them.
My second wish is for, No
more wars in this world. I want
no wars because the next
president might make us have
a war. Innocent people get
killed in the wars. And people
dont feel safe when wars are
going on.
Then my third wish is for, To
have presents for people in
the world. I want people to
have presents because homeless people dont have any
presents. Families dont have
enough money for their kids
to have presents. And kids
who dont have anything to
play with.
Finally my last wish is for. Me
to have lots of presents! I want
a iphone 7. Some clothes and
shoes. A drone and many other toys for Christmas.
I know its a lot to ask for but
it has to be great for me and
the people around me. I be-

Dear Santa,

Dear Santa,

You know what I want for

Christmas? All of the foster
children to get presents. They
dont get a lot of stuff for
Christmas and I know that.
You know, I think I would
like for Christmas an xbox 1. I
know me and my siblings are
getting it for Christmas with
battlefield. I know its going to
awesome on Christmas when I
play it.
I think in my stocking there
is going to be a knife. It might
be one of the cool knives with
a lever on the back of the handle. I have one of them so I
might get another one for
Christmas. The blade of the
knife will pop out of the handle when I pull the lever.
I like guns. I think I am going
to get a 22 for Christmas and
its going to be cool. My brother has one and I have always
liked it. It shoots a lot of 22
bullets at a time. Its cool.
I want a safe trip to Ohio to
visit my step dads parents.

Its already
December!WOW!lm so excited for what you might bring
for me.Here are a few ideas.
First I wish for NO world
hunger,because I love food.
Everybody should have access
to food.I believe that no one
should go hungry,and you
have to have food to function.
Secondly,I would like to
have world peace.I think we
need world peace this year because everyone will have a
merry Christmas,so once the
world could be calm, and everyone would have a wonderful new year.
Lastly I wish for a lots of
snow this winter,because we
have not had a big snow in
forever.l love snow and everyone would get a day off of
school.
I know thats a lot,but please
consider this list.Thank you for
reading my list.Thanks SANTA!

Sincerely, Eli
Oh its already time, Dear
Santa,
I have some things on my
list this year. I only want three
things this year. Theyre different ,so listen closely.
My first wish is... for no one
to be lonely. No one deserves
to be alone at Christmas. Everyone should love each other
and never leave anyone out. I
am also tender hearted so
when I see someone alone I
will cry.
For my second wish I want...
For no one to get hurt over the
holiday. I cant stand it when
people get hurt, it makes my
heart break. Also the E.D.
(Emergency Department) is
not a fun place to be at Christmas. You should not be in pain
on Christmas, it is a happy holiday not painful.
My third and final wish is...
for everyone to have a good
friend. I think that because everyone should feel loved by at
least one person. To have
someone that cares about
them all the time. Also to have
someone to talk to when they
are sorrowful, going crazy, or
just need someone to talk to.
Santa dont just think that
youre getting it for me youre
getting it for people who really
need it. I hope everyone loves
what I wished for. Merry
Christmas Santa.
Love Emmi
Dear Santa,
I can hear the loud noise of
the reindeers hooves on my
roof.l just wanted to let you
know what I wanted for Christmas.
The first thing I want is a
football jersey. First things first
I want a Cam Newton football
jersey. I want it to be white
and blue with black stripes. I
want it to be Nike.l want it to
have his last name on the back
[Newton].
Next thing I want is for
South Carolina to beat Clemson. I want there to be a large
score margin like 21 points. I
want USC to get two interceptions. I want USC to get 14
points off turnovers.
Last but not least I want a
Carolina Panthers hoodie. I
want it to be blue, black and
white. I want it to say Carolina
Panthers on the front. I want it
to have the Panthers logo on
the front.
In conclusion, I want you to

Love, Gloria
Dear Santa,
This year my Christmas list
isnt about what I want, but
what other people, and this
world needs. This time around,
my Christmas list is about fulfilling promises for other people, and not myself.
First of all, Im asking that
animals will not be left in shelters this Christmas; on commercials I see shelters that
have animals in them waiting
for a real home. My heart hurts
when I walk into a shelter and
hundreds of eyes look at me
sadly, hoping to be adopted. If
someone doesnt claim them
soon enough, they will be put
to sleep.
Next, if it isnt too much
trouble, I dont want any more
animal abuse. My dog was
abused, so Im very protective
of animals that were hurt or
abused, which is why this is
one of my wishes. People just
hurt the animals for no good
reason. Then the animals have
no trust in people anymore,
which is bad because we take
care of them.
Finally, could you please
make sure that parents wont
fight. When parents fight, kids
are sad. Then kids take their
familys issues out on other
people, which makes the other person mad. Then fighting
usually leads to divorce, which
no one likes.
I know this is a lot to ask Mr.
Claus, but Im hoping that you
can fulfill my wishes. Right
now people, and animals are
in great need of these things
being fixed, and Im hoping
you can do it! Thank you so
much!
Sincerely-Your friend,
Hayden Clement

has my favorite players and

teams in the NFL . And time
goes bye bye when I play. AND
it is my favorite sport.
Thank you Santa for taking
your sweet time, for paying attention to my short list just so i
can have a fun Christmas.
Sincerely, Jaheim
Dear Santa,
How are you? I have been
good this year, but not my sisters!
First, I want a tablet for playing games. I will also use It for
calling my mom and so I wont
be bored.
Second, I want a doll tor my
little sister. This is so my sister
wont complain, and so she
will leave me alone.
Third, I would like Harry Potter wand, so I can scare my sisters. Also. so my sister will be
scared of me, and my older sister wont scare me.
Santa, I know It is a challenge, but i know you can do it
for me. Thank you very much
Mr. Claus!
Sincerely, Kaitlyn
Dear Santa,
I cant believe its almost
Christmas!! have one gift I
want and two wishes that
could be helpful for me and
other people.

Dear Santa,
I know that you have to travel round the world and I know
its hard but please read this.
First I would like a phone.l
do not have one, but I would
like one. I could text my friends
for hours. I would call them so
many times.
Next I wish everybody had a
friend so they wont be lonely.
What if theres a bully? Then
you need a friend. If somebody is being mean, then you
need a friend so they can
stand up for you. Santa, please
give everybody a friend so
they wont be lonely.
Last thing, Santa. I wish that
everyone would have peace.
Everyone fights and I dont like
it. People get hurt or even
killed. I know you dont like it.
So bring some Christmas magic for everyone. Stop the tragic,
Santa. Its really sad, Santa, so
bring some peace.
Thank you Santa. You are
the best guy in the world for

Your friend, Matt
Dear Santa,
I love Christmas. I want you
to know what I want for Christmas. All I want for Christmas is
my two front teeth! my brother and I sang.
First, I would like to help the
homeless. I want to give them
three meals a day and snacks. I
would also like to give them a
paying Job. Last, I want them
to have a house to live in, even
if it is small.

everybody a friend
so they wont be
lonely.

Matt
Second, I would like to have
a tv for my bedroom. I would
like the tv to be very big, but
not too big. Also, I want Directv (it is very good on our other
tvs). Lastly, I need Netflix on it.
Third, I want to go to Disney
World with a friend. I want to
go into all the parks at Disney
World. I really want to use a
monorail to go everywhere,
because they are very fun to
ride. Lastly, I want to stay at
Disney World for three weeks.
In conclusion, I want three
things for Christmas. Santa, I
cant wait to hear your reindeer on my roof and the jingle
bells on your sleigh.Thank you
for reading my letter.

Sincerely, Peyton
Dear Santa,
Hey! Thanks for all the stuff
last year, but I have a very different wish list. Read my letter
to find out, no peeking.
First thing I want is for everyone to have clothes. I cant
stand people shivering, it gives
me the chills. Plus they probably dont have a lot of comfort.
Dont get me started about
the weather. I want them to
have warmth.
The next thing I want is for
people to have shoes. It would
be safer. I dont care what
brand- Converse Jordans, flip
flops... oh my, thats fine. They
would be more comfortable.
Walking on the gravel, road
,and even grass can hurt a lot.
There would be less infections
that could cause death or severe injuries.
Finally, I want everyone to
have food. No more hunger,
thats been bothering us for
years. Put an end to it! Less
problems.... we probably
wouldnt have so many complaints if everyone got food.
More happiness and smiles
make everyones day.
I know thats a lot. But, think,
its not for me, its for everyone
else. Well, have a good day
and thanks.

Sincerely, Caden Dillard

unto us a Son is given.
Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Dear Santa,
I feel like I do not need that
many gifts this year, but can
you please listen to me before
you go on your trip.
One thing I want for Christmas is an Odell Beckham Jr.
jersey, because is a really good
football player. And he is really
known for his three-handed
catch called The Odell. I also
really like him.
And also Santa, I am going
to need a new football. Mostly
because my last football got
stolen. Another reason is because football is my favorite
sport. Lastly, I could bring it to
school.
And one more thing Santa, I
want Madden 17. Because it

Dear Santa,
The reason Im writing is because I am BROKE! Yes, I said
broke- and my parents wont
get me stuff because they say
Im old enough to buy what I
want. I dont get money for
doing the laundry, so Im asking you.
The first thing I want is a
pocket trumpet. I would like it
to be the best brand. Also, Id
like it to be gold and come
with a cleaning kit.
The second thing I want is a
trumpet bell stand. It needs to
be metal so it wont break. It
must have something to carry
it and a five star rating.
And the last but not least is
for Relay for Life to reserve
$900,000,000 dollars to help
the people with cancer. And
thats what I want.
Picky guy, Quinn
Dear Santa,
here are three things from
my wish list. It may not look
like much but these wishes
arent for me, but theyre for
everyone.
First I want everyone to have
a friend so no ones lonely, everyones happy, and Christmas
stays cheerful.
Second I want no one to feel
lonely so everyones happy, no
ones sad, and everyones
cheerful.
Last I want no one to be sad
so Christmas stays cheerful,
everyones happy, and so that
there will be happiness.
I know youre not a fairy or a
genie, but please grant these
wishes, not for me but for everyone. Wish you a merry
Christmas.

wish that all dreams were as
sweet as candy canes and if it
was a good dream it would
come true. I wish life was always fair so no one could accuse anyone.
The third and last thing I
think the world needs is a
song and not just any song a
song that could heal a heart. I
wish people could break out
into song and not be called
weird. I feal bad for those who
can not hear music. Evryone
should have a song in their
heart.
Well that is my wish list. I
know that it is a bit different
then last years............... and the
year before but I think it is a
good list.
Your Friend, Lillie
Dear, Santa Claus,

How are you doing? I hope

you are good. Ok, today I will
be telling you about my Christmas list.
The things that are on the
top of my list are a lot of snow,
a sled, and a paint bail gun.
The things that I listed are
want the most, so, before you
get me the other things, I want
you to get me the things I listed first.
Before you do that, there is
something I want for my family. What I want for my family is
for them to stop fighting,
sleeping in so late, and to stop
smoking. If you can do that it
will be awesome. If it is to hard
for you to do, you do not have
to do it. But i would appreciate
if you did do it.
But if you do not, there is always next year to get it, so I
am fine if you cant do it. So
until next year, I say Merry
Christmas and a Happy New
Year.

I am writing this letter so I

can tell you I want this Christmas.
For example one thing I
want is a multi-terrain hoverboard. So I can go through
many terrains without it being
a struggle. I also want it to be
white, and a non-overheating
ion battery. Also I can get
around easier.
But I specifically want a trick
scooter to do tricks. But also
prove to my friends I can do
tricks on a scooter. I can show
them how to flair, barspin, and
stand spin. I can mainly do
these tricks because there is a
ramp in my grandpas back
yard.
In fact the final thing I want
is world peace. But not just
world peace but world peace
for eternity. Mainly so all of the
soldiers at war can come
home and spend Christmas
with their family.
Thats all of the things I want
for this Christmas. I cant wait
for you to get here

I know this might seem

seem like another plain old
gift list but this is a list for everyone so here I go.
First I dont want anyone left
in the cold. One reason is because its just wrong. Another
reason it makes me melancholy.
Second I wish for families for
orphans. I would like that because they be so joyful. 2nd
reason no more loneliness.
Last I would like true freedom for everyone. First reason
no more prejudice in the
world. 2nd no more sorrow.
3rd no racism in the world.
Santa please do this. This
would make everyone rejoiced. The world would would
be a better place.

Sincerely, Will
Dear Santa,
I know you are buzzing like
a bee at this time of year. But
could you please do somethings for me. These things are
not for me really there for
you,m, and the world.
The first thing I want for
Christmas is for hate to disappear. I cant stand it when
someone says I hate you it is
so mean and most likely not
true. The world would be a
much safer if hate disappeared
,then everyone would be nicer.
People would never do bad
things to one another or end
up in jail/jube[kid jail] if hate
disappeared.
The second thing the world
needs are more dreams and
not the kind that you have
why you sleep. I mean like the
kind of dream of where you
see yourself in a few years. If I
had a magical wish I would

Yours truly, Justine

Dear Santa,
This year has gone by like a
flash! So, now it is time for my
Chrismas list. I am taking a little bit of a different approach
this year. There are a lot of
things others need too.
First, I hope people will have
someone to be with on Christmas. I hate the thought that
people are alone on the holidays or a special day! It is a
special time for families to be
together; they should be! No
one should be alone anyway.
Also, I hope for nice weather
on Christmas. Everyone wants
to be with someone on the
Holidays. Bad weather
shouldnt keep them apart. I
would like a light snowfall to
play in outside. Wonderful
weather is always good to
have on the Holidays.
Lastly, please bring rain to
SC and NC. We need it for our
crops, land, plants, and food. It
has been months since a good
rain has come. Also, the fires in
the mountains willstay lit until
we have a good rain. It will
keep burning the wild life and
peoples homes.
I know this sounds like a lot.

But I know you can do it! It is

needed in the world!
Sincerely, McKenna Kovacs
Dear Santa,
First I hope my family and
relatives are going to have the
bestest Christmas they ever
had, so I can have a good day
with my relatives, and have
fun with my cousins and
brothers, which are Max and
Mark. Also, most of all I want is
all my relatives to come from
Belarus.
Next, The presents I want is
some LeBron shoes, the newest Diary of Wimpy Kid: Double Down, an airsoft shotgun,
and an airsoft sniper, and a
snow camouflage suit with a
camouflage jungle suit. Also, a
telescope for my air rifle. I
hope that is not to much for
you, Santa.
Last, before all my relatives
leave I want to see the fireworks shoot in the sky and eat
the food and celebrate Jesus
birthday. Also, burn some
marshmallows to eat. Then,
say bye to my relatives.
Thank you, Santa. I hope Im
not on the naughty list. Please
grant my wish. I trust you. Merry Christmas.
Your friend, Nikita
Dear Santa,
December is the month for
spreading cheer.
First, all I want is a MP3 player to listen to my favorite artist,
Bebe Rexha. The second reason is that I do not want to use
my dads. Also, I want to rock
out at the bus stop.
The second thing I want is a
spy walkie talkie. The first reason: to talk to Logan. Second
reason: to listen to private conversations. Last reason: to spy
on Luke.
The last and not least thing I
want is headphones to listen
to the MP3 player.
Santa, that is all I want this
year.
Love you friend, Landen
Dear Santa,
I want a phone, a hover
board, and some snow, but
most of all I want everyone to
have a friend and a family, I
want to end world hunger,
and give everyone 1 million
dollars. Heres why.
First, I want everyone to
have a friend and a family. I
dont like people being alone,
it makes me feel terrible.
Whod they spend holidays
with?
Next I want to end world
hunger. People are dying and
thats miserable! In 3rd world
countries like Africa, they dont
have good food and it makes
me feel guilty to leave food on
my plate.
Finally I want to give everyone 1 million dollars, some
people dont have moey and
they need to buy homes and
get food.
If youget me a phone, a hoverboard, and snow it would be
great but if you give everyone
a friend and a family, end
world hunger and, give everyone 1 million dollars that
would be fantastic, better than
fantastic! I wouldnt be able to
thank you enough!
Sincerely, Evelyn
Dear Santa,
Man this year has been
rough. Oh look, I see a homeless man. I wish for christmas
all the homeless people to get
a home. Plus all the people in
the war gets a million dollars.
Plus every one has a friend for
christmas. Its right around the
corner. Lets see what the big
man could do.
Ok, lets skip ahead. I think
every one who served in the
war get a MILLION dollars$.
Why? Because you miss your
families they even miss you

the greer citizen C5

Mr. Clause. They also miss their

families. Plus even BIRTHDAY
PARTIES.
Plus every homeless people
should get a home. Hhhm
why? Because oh help on a
sign well stop. OK! Hey are you
cold yes ok hop in. Lets finish
our conversation they can go
days without food. Plus they
sleep on the ground and on
benches. Plus some ar killed
on the streets. So well what
happens if you where one
true. Would you like to be in
his shoes. NO!!! When you
could be sleeping in in the
most comfortable bed. Plus
and be warm.
Ok down to my last thing
then one more. I also think every one who doesnt have a
friend has a friend should have
one. Why? Cause do you want
to not have a friend. Of course
not. My point exactly. Well
they can buly or be bullied he
would be mad and try to fight
people. Then we also have
people who try to corner him/
her because they dont have
any one to defend them.
Also I have been extra good
for all of that. What whynot extra cookies and milk. Ok extra
cookies ok yay party he said
yes. Ok I also want a Ipod 6
generation for christmas to.
(dont forget the others) Dear
Santa thats my wish please
please please. Ok he said maybe. Lets make this the best
christmas ever.
Your, friend
Remington Logsdon

On Christmas day I
want it to snow like
crazy. I have been
hoping it snows for
so long. Everyone
has been wishing it
will snow this year.
Greyson W.
Dear Santa,
Goodness! It is already time
to write a letter to you again. I
feel like I just wrote a letter last
month. I am writing my list a
differently this year. Not just
for me, but for the world.
My first wish is that nobody
in the world gets hurt. That
there are no illnesses or diseases. There are no bad car accidents on the road. The power does not go out in the
buildings.
My second wish is that everybody has safe travels
through the new year and
christmas. I want this wish because I want nobody to miss
theirr family traditons and specia events. My second reasonis
that there are no bad car firres,
plan fires, and carr accidents.
My final reason is that no ones
carr breaks down in the cold,
ice, and snow.
My final wish is that there
are no sad feelings during
christmas and the new year.
My first reason is there is nobody left alone during christmas and the New Year. My second reason reason is that everybody has someone to keep
them company during christmas and the New Year. My
third reason is that it is the
Lords Birthday, they should
celebrrate the day he was borrn in some way with family
and friends.
I think this may be a little
too much but I think you could
do it. This world has changed a
lot but the feelings that I have
for the world and the people
have not changed not just me
other people care to.
Sincerely, Elizabeth Stokes
Dear Santa,
I cant believe it is almost
Christmas. This year has went
by so fast! Oh, this is not about
the year, its about my Christmas list, so down below is
what I want for Christmas.
My first wish would be no
bullying because if you see
someone being bullied dont
just stand there do something
about it.
My second wish would be
people not being left out because if you see someone that
has no friends you should go
talk to them and say Hey do
you want to be my friend? My
third wish would be money for
the world because for the
homeless people will have
food, a house, and a family.
I hope this is not a lot to ask.
All of this is very great stuff not
for me but for the people out
in the world. So I hope you will
do it for the homeless, kids being bullyed, and for the kids
being left out. I hope I will see
you on Christmas.
Sincerely, Gracie

I wish for my family

Dear, Santa
Is it actually Christmas time?
My wish list will not just be for
me, but it will be for everyone.
Because others will probably
want some of the same things
I want.
First, on Christmas I want
people to work together and
not by there self. I want everybody to be kind to each other.
I would also like everybody to
be very thankful.
Next, on Christmas day I
want it to snow like crazy. I
have been hoping it snows for
so long. Everyone has been
wishing it will snow this year.
Third, we all know you ask
for presents on Christmas. But
did you know you need to ask
your elfs. I mean you could
write to Santa, but there is
probably a 1% chance it will
get to him.
Thank you Santa for everything you have done for me
over the years. But this year I
want you to help other people
more than you help me. I
know its hard for you to do all
of this but please it will make
me very happy.
Greyson W.
Dear Santa,
These are the things I would
like to see this Christmas. I
would like to see my family
happy. So I can see them all
smiling. To see them all laughing and having a good time.
Also, just to see them enjoy
their Christmas.
Id also llike to see that those
Santas with the bells get a lot
of money. So I know that it will
be a bit easier for poor kids.
Hopefully Ill see a once-sick
kid healthy again. Also, it
makes you know that you did
something good.
I hope I can see another
good church play. Maybe
someone new will learn the
true meaning of Christmas. Its
also a good way to worship
God.
If not they might remember
the true meaning of Christmas. These are pretty much
what I want to see for Christmas. I hope have a Merry
Christmas.
Except I would lilke to see an
AR15 under the Christmas
tree. It is a type of semi-automatic rifle. It is going to be for
deer hunting.
Sincerely, Riley Burnham
Dear Santa,
Im going to tell what I want
for my family and my friend.
For my dad, well, he needs a
new car. He wants a Ram Bronco. But, it has to be big, strong,
and cool, and he wants it
brand new.
Here is what I want for Mrs.
Williams: a nice and decent car
thats low, (but not too low)
small, and cool.
And finally, a car for Mrs.
Cannada. The car must be big
and cool and it has to have
mufflers.
That is my grown up Christmas list.
Your friend, Johnny
Dear Santa,
What I want for Christmas is
for my Uncle James to get better and I want new basketball
stuff and a lot of legos.
The first thing I want is for
my Uncle James to get out of
the hospital so he can spend
time with his family on Christmas. I also want him to have a
great last year of the Army. FYI
he has been army for 20 years.
I also want him to have a fantastic Christmas.
Next I want new basketball
stuff. Like, a really nice and
new basketball. I want a new
basketball hoop. One more
thing I want is new basketball
shoes (high tops).
The last thing I want is legos
because I got some last year
but I used them all by building
things. I want a lot of legos so I
can build a lot of things. So
can you please try to get me
some.
So please try to get all of
these things done for me.
Thank you. I cant wait until
Christmas.
Your friend, Dylan
Dear Santa,
I want some things for
Christmas, but I also want
somethings to change for all
of us, like Paynes family.
Paynes family has had a hard
year and I want them to have
better one this year.
First I want an Xbox because
almost everybody has one. I
like playing Madden 16 because its a cool game. I also
like playing with somebody.
Then, I want the Dallas Cowboys to win the Super Bowl
because they have waited for
ever to win and they always
come so close but then they

and friends to be
happy.

Kyleigh
fall short and lose in the Final
8.
But last I want Paynes family
to have a good Christmas and
a good year, because they
have a baby in the hospital
and there grandpa died.
So, I hope you can do all
that. If not, try to pray for
Paynes family.

Sincerely, Nathan
Dear Santa,
Please help countries to
have peace, so soldiers wont
get hurt.
Please help children in orphanages to be adopted by
caring people. I also want people with serious diseases to be
cured. If they need money for
medicine or operations, please
provide that.
Please help my parents find
good jobs, so they can buy a
house. Then we would be happy in our new home in the U.S.
Thank you, Santa.

Sincerely, Sasha
To Santa,

Dear Santa my wish to everyone is for everyone to be

happy because it is a time of
giving stuff and not just that. It
is the most important time because it is Jesus birthday.
I want everybody to celebrate youer birthday and I
wish for everybody to be happy for ever. I also wish for jets
and a robot dog named Chip.
I wish for a ripstick electric. I
wish for my mommy to be
happy. I wish for my family and
friends to be happy.
I wish for the whole world to
be happy. I wish to see my
best friend and for her to be
safe. I wish for my teacheres to
be safe over Christmas break.
I wish that my teacheres will
get something. I hope I can
find a Harry Potter book for a
teacher and I am not saying
witch teacher. I wish for all the
parents to be safe over Christmas break and dont get broken bones. I hope that every
Christmas will be celebrated
Jesus birthday and I hope everyone gets presents this year.

Love, Kyleigh
Dear Santa,
Wow! This year went by so
fast, I cant even blink. Now I
have decided what I want for
Christmas. May I share it with
you?
Now one thing I want for
Christmas is a pair of new
shoes, because the ones I have
are too small. Also I want different colors for my shoes.
Second of all I want a new
baseball bat and the reason
why is I need a heavier bat. I
also want it to be my teams
colors, and I need larger size
bat.
The thing I want most for
Christmas is for Clemson to
win the National Championship in college football so Carolina Gamecock fans wont be
cocky. Theyre my favorite
team and the are doing very
well this season.
Thats a lot to ask for, but I
think you can do it. This Christmas will be the best. I want
you to be safe and have a Holly Jolly Christmas.

Sincerely, Noah McGarity

Dear Santa,
I know every year I ask for
gifts and other treats but it is
selfish of me to ask for presents on the celebration of the
Mesiahs Birth so this year I
would like these things to
make the world a better place.
First I would like to heal the
wounds of families that have
lost family members because
no one disserves to lose family
no matter what. No one
should feel alone or live alon
24/7.
Second, I would love for horrible wars to end forever because lots of families have lost
many over the course of 30
years. No one would be betrayed and killed because of
war and of course family
would be together longer.
Finally I need everyone to
feel loved because everyone
disserves to have family and
ones who love them. Many
people also look very lonely in
public food areas and it melts
my heart.
Thank you I know I can
count on you to do this big favor for me and the world. I
look forward to see what happens.

Letters continued

This year Berry Shoals Intermediate students were given the option
of writing Letters to 2017 or Letters to the Editor instead of Letters to Santa.
Several accepted the challenge, addressing issues including hunger,
bullying and loud music. Here is a sampling of those letters.
Look for more in upcoming issues.

The story of the birth of Jesus

Christmas
traditions
focus on several different aspects of family and
spiritual life. While many
stories are shared around
Christmastime, perhaps
none bears more significance than the origin of
the Christmas celebration.
Sharing the Christmas
story is an integral part
of holiday gatherings, reminding families that faith
is foremost during this
festive time of year.

The Conception of Jesus

Mary was a woman living

in the Galilee area of Nazareth. She was engaged to a
Jewish carpenter named
Joseph. An angel visited
the Virgin Mary and told
her that she would conceive a child - a son - by
the power of the Holy Spirit. When the son was born,
she would name him Jesus. Mary questioned the
angel, who reassured her
that anything was possible by God and that Jesus
would be Gods own son.
Joseph was troubled
when he found out Mary
was with child and even
considered breaking their
engagement, which was
allowed under Jewish law.
But God soon sent another
angel, this time to Joseph,
in a dream. The angel reassured Joseph that his marriage to Mary and the birth
of this child were His will.
Joseph awoke from his
dream and took Mary as
his wife soon after, ready
and willing to raise the
child despite the public
humiliation he may experience.

The Census

During this time the

Romans had control over

many parts of the world,

including where Joseph
and Mary resided. Ruler
Caesar Augustus decreed
that every person living
under Roman rule had to
return to his town of origin to participate in a census so everyone could be
taxed accordingly. Joseph,
hailing from Bethlehem,
had to return to this town
with his very pregnant
bride.

Glory to God in the

highest heaven, and
on earth peace to
those on whom his
favor rests.
They traveled for many
days and, upon arriving in
Bethlehem, found that the
inns were full and there
was no available lodging.
Mary and Joseph took
shelter in a stable and
prepared to welcome their
son.

Jesus Arrival

According to the Gospel

of Luke, Mary gave birth to
her firstborn, a son, while
in the stable. She wrapped
him in cloth and placed
him in a manger because
there was no guest room
available for them.
And there were shepherds living out in the
fields nearby, keeping
watch over their flocks at
night. An angel of the Lord
appeared to them, and the
glory of the Lord shone
around them, and they
were terrified. But the angel said to them, Do not
be afraid. I bring you good

news that will cause great

joy for all the people. Today in the town of David
a Savior has been born to
you; he is the Messiah, the
Lord. This will be a sign to
you: You will find a baby
wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host
appeared with the angel,
praising God and saying,
Glory to God in the
highest heaven, and on
earth peace to those on
whom his favor rests.
When the angels had left
them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to
one another, Lets go to
Bethlehem and see this
thing that has happened,
which the Lord has told us
about.
So they hurried off and
found Mary and Joseph,
and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When
they had seen him, they
spread the word concerning what had been told
them about this child,
and all who heard it were
amazed at what the shepherds said to them. -Luke
Chapter 2
Many people visited the
baby Jesus, including three
wise men from the East
who traveled by following
a guiding star to bestow
gifts of gold, frankincense
and myrrh on the baby
king.
When Joseph and Mary
had performed all the
things necessary according to the law of the Lord,
they returned to Nazareth
with Jesus, who was growing strong in spirit and
filled with wisdom and the
grace of God.

2016 wasnt as good as I thought it would

be. I want 2017 to be better. I hope these requests will be answered.
First, I would like a better school year. Id like
better grades to get into a good college. I need
help on good behavior too.
Next, I want a selfless family. We are always
arguing and selfish. I want us to be loving toward another.
Last, I want a good president. We need to
have a good future. Hopefully America will be
great.
I hope this is not to much to ask for. I hope
you can answer all of these. Thats all I need.
Thanks!

Sincerely,
Artem

I want us to be loving
toward another.

Bradley
