Emotional Intelligence
Emotions are intense feelings caused due to a stimulus and are directed at
someone or something. While the moods are less intense feelings than
emotions and can be caused without any stimuli. Through this session, I came
to know about basic emotions humans have: Glad, Sad, Mad and scared.
Shame is a learnt emotion. All other emotions can be derived from the
combinations of these basic emotions.
Emotions are important for humans as it help them survive, help them in better
decision making, we can predict behaviour with emotions, it help us setting
boundaries and it also help in communication. I came to know about the term
Amygdala hijack which states the overwhelming emotional response caused
due to a stimulus. This happened because that stimulus has caused a
significant emotional threat. Amygdala is the part of human brain which
handles emotion. Road rage are perfect example of Amygdala hijack where a
small stimulus can cause massacre, riots. Therefore, it is very important for
humans to control their emotions.
Emotional intelligence is the capacity of recognizing our own feelings and of
the other people. EQ has twice the power of IQ to predict performance. EQ is
also a better predictor than employee skill, knowledge or expertise. Emotional
intelligence composed self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and
social skills. Through the emotional intelligence self-evaluation, I came to know
that I need to work on self-awareness part. As a manager I should be aware
of my emotions. Hiding emotions does not help and it eventually burst out. It is
better to express emotion rather than acting irrationally due to it. It often
happen at workplace that we are disgruntled due to some issue and often
express that on our subordinates. As a manager it important that I keep selfevaluating myself and dont behave illogically due to my emotions.
Motivating your team members is an important task that as a manager I have
to keep doing. This will increase the efficiency of my subordinates and they will
also be happy to work under me. As a manager I should be empathetic towards
his/her juniors. This will help me having a good rapport with my subordinates.

As a manager I should essentially have good social skills. This will ensure my
good relations with my suppliers, my contractors, my clients and within the
organization.
