New Year New Start

An enthusiastic Happy New Year and Prospero Ao Nuevo to our beloved missionaries
in the Spain Barcelona Mission!! What a wonderful year 2016 wasso full of incredible
conversions, baptisms, temple sealings, growing wards and branches, new chapels
being built, and tremendous contributions to the building of the Kingdom of God by
consecrated missionaries. What magnificent memories were made as you went out
into the streets of Spain and raised a voice of warning and gave our Heavenly
Fathers children a chance to hear the Restored Gospel. I want to extend my
deepest gratitude to all of you for the support that we felt and received from you, for
living Christ-like lives and being exemplary, for working to the limits of your physical
ability, for using time wisely, and for raising obedience to its high level in El Faro. Thank
you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
I hope you had a chance to celebrate the coming of the New Year by eating the
traditional 12 grapes as the gong sounded for each of the twelve months just past.
Hermana Dayton and I did so and we were both successful except that we made the
mistake of buying grapes with seeds in them. That was a little challenging chewing
and swallowing. What a fun and unusual tradition; it is one we will likely celebrate
even when the time for our missions is over. There is so much we love about this
beautiful land and its people. What a blessing to have been assigned to this mission!
I had the privilege of attending the dedication of the new Logroo Chapel on
December 17, 2016. It is a beautiful 2-story chapel with extensive windows, a huge
chapel, beautiful baptismal font, ample classrooms on both levels, and a location in a
very nice part of town. Talk about a new start! There is no question in my mind that
the missionary work will increase and flourish in Logroo with the completion of this
beautiful new chapel. Currently the new chapel in Santander is almost completed,
the new chapel in San Sebastien is half completed, the huge new stake center in
Valencia has its roof on, the new chapel in Vilafranca has its roof on, both Tarragona
and Terrassa Wards have purchased the land for their new chapels and are about to
begin construction, and the spectacular site for the new Bilbao chapel and stake
center has been prepared and construction will start this year (the site is only a few
blocks from the Guggenheim museum) . In addition, the Ibiza Branch is getting a new

local which triples its current space, and the group in Teruel has its own local for the first
time. The Pamplona Ward was just divided and the units in Barcelona and Tarragona
are preparing for division. The Church is entering a whole new advanced phase of its
existence here in Spain and that should certainly be seen as a new start.
Our initiative What Gift Will You Give the Savior at Christmas Time spills over into
January and we know that your hard work, increased dedication, extra effort, inspired
finding and consecrated effort will pay big dividends. For sure we want to start out the
New Year in an outstanding fashion. The year 2016 was a good year for our mission with
403 baptisms and we were blessed to lead the Europe area in baptisms. The down side
of that statistic is that we baptized fewer of our Heavenly Fathers children in this mission
than we did the year before and are still below our goal of having 12 baptisms per
week (we are currently at about 8 baptisms per week). You will all recall that our
eventual goal is to baptize 600 people in one year in our mission. To reach that goal,
we have felt that it would be good to break it down into a 2 year process. Thus our new
baptismal goal for 2017 is to baptize 500 worthy converts in 2017 and 600 in 2018!!
Without any question, both of these goals are reasonable goals for this amazing mission
but it will require the best efforts of every single missionary in this mission. Thus it is
important that every single companionship understands that we will need them to
contribute to our successfully obtaining this goal.
It is our prayer that every
companionship can baptize every single month. It is doable with faith, obedience,
hard work, and perfect use of our time.
Since the New Year is a great time to set new goals, we hope that all of you will
embrace this goal and work tirelessly to achieve it. I am absolutely certain that with the
help of the Lord and us doing our part, this goal will be achieved. Know that we love
you, are honored to serve with you, are lifted and inspired by the great work you are
doing, and share your love of the Saviors Restored Gospel. May 2017 be the best year
ever for every single one of you is my prayer.
Con deseos para un Prospero Ao Nuevo,
Presidente Merril T. Dayton

Message From Hermana Dayton

Decisiveness vs Procrastination
Decisiveness is choosing to do what is right based on accurate facts, wise counsel,
and clearly defined goals. It is the ability to recognize key factors and then finalize
difficult decisions.
President David O. McKay counseled: The greatest battle of life is fought within the
silent chambers of your own soul. It is a good thing to sit down and commune with
yourself, to come to an understanding with yourself and in that silent moment what
your duty is to your family, to your Church, to your country, and to your fellowman.
As missionaries, we have decided what our duty is to the Church of God, and our
fellowmen at this time of our life. Weve chosen to serve the Savior to bless the lives
of the people in Spain to bring their happiness through the gospel.
Many years ago I took a leadership class. The instructor told each of us to write down
what would be spoken at our funeral if we passed away that day. He said we were to
think about what our parents would speak, our brothers and sisters, our Friends. He
asked, Would they all say similar things? He asked if our behavior was consistent at
home, at school, or on a sports team, or at our work. He then gave us 30 minutes to
write the talks. At the end of class he asked that we go home and portray what we
wrote. The next he asked us to write another talk for our funeral. It was a talk reflecting
what we wanted to be at our funeral. I can assure you, that my friends and I realized
that essay #2 was the one we wanted read at our funerals. At the end of this exercise
my instructor asked us to write what we could do beginning that day to make sure we
became the person in essay #2. We listed each item we desired to be spoken and
then listed specific things we could do to become the person in essay2. This
experience impacted me greatly it inspired me to focus my time and energy on the
character strengths in my actions and behaviors.
With the beginning of this New Year, it is the perfect time for us to make decisions on
what we desire to accomplish and who we desire to become in 2017. The Little
decisions we make today determine the direction of our lives.
It is the daily, consistent things you do that will strengthen you to be a leader and an
example-daily prayer, daily scripture study, daily obedience, daily service to others.
As you do these things, you will grow closer to the Savior and become more and more
like Him.
As missionaries we can decide today to be 100% strictly obedient to the White
Handbook, Preach My Gospel, and the scriptures. We can make decisions now to
testify powerfully and invite investigators to be baptized. We can decide to use every
minute of time wisely and to not procrastinate.

In one of President Monsons talks he shared a simple, yet far reaching formula to
guide us in the choices of life:
Fill your minds with truth.
Fill your hearts with love.
Fill your lives with service.
He further goes on to say,
By doing so, may we one day hear the plaudit from our Lord and Savior, Well done,
good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee
ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of the lord.
President Dayton and I hope and pray we will all be wise in the decisions we make
each day. We hope we will all choose to trust in the Lord and to serve him with all of
our heart, might, mind, and strength. We love you and feel grateful for the big
decision each of you made to serve a mission. We pray that the New Year will bring
you much joy as you faithfully serve the Master.

The Miracle of Baptism

more from him in these past
weeks of teaching him then he
has from me. He was so
receptive in every lesson and
the reason he agreed and
knew everything was true is not
just because he sat there and
listened to us but because he
also acted for himself when we
were not together. He would
read from the Book of Mormon,
pray to know, and come to
church, he was and is
INCREDIBLE!!! I have been so
blessed to be part of this step
in his life. To end the baptismal
service he was asked to bear
his testimony and it was one of
the most powerful testimonies I
have ever heard, he said that
he knew without a doubt that
the Book of Mormon was true,
that Joseph Smith was a
prophet
and
that
the
priesthood was on the earth

again. It was beautiful! I guess

you can just know that I cried!
The most beautiful part is that
his son Rey David was baptized
about a month and a half ago
and soon we hope will be his
wife and then they will be able
to go to them temple and be
an eternal family!

This week we saw the baptism

of
Mabel
and
Antonio.
Everything turned out so well.
We could see a difference in
both of them. We had over 10
investigators at that baptism
and they loved it! We will be
teaching
Mabels
family
tomorrow evening so were
really excited. The area here in
______ is just sky rocketing. We
should be having another
baptism this week or the next.
Were seeing the fruits of so
much faith that previous Elders

have invested in this area.

What a joy it is to carry the
name of the Savior and

repentance
and
baptism!
The Zone had a

We passed Christmas really

well in _______ finishing the
week with a baptism! Jose Luis
was baptized and confirmed a
member of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is
going to be a great convert.
His testimony is so strong, and
yet, he knows that he still has a
lot of learning to go. I am so
grateful that I got to serve in
_______. It was one of my
favorite areas. There was never
a down point, and I can't wait
to bring that excitement to this
new area!!!
