Friendship is a term used to denote co-operative and supportive behaviour between two or more humans.
This article focuses on the notion specific to i n t e r personal relationships. In this sense, the term connotes a
relationship which involves mutual knowledge, esteem and affection. Friends will welcome each other's company
and exhibit loyalty towards each other. Their tastes will usually be similar and may converge and they will share
enjoyable activities. They will also engage in mutually helping behaviour, such as exchange of advice and the
sharing of hardship. A friend is someone who may often demonstrate reciprocating and reflective behaviours.
Yet, for many, friendship is nothing more than the trust that someone or something will not harm them.
Value that is found in friendships is often the result of a friend demonstrating on a consistent basis: the tendency
to desire what is best for the other, sympathy and empathy, honesty, perhaps in situations where it may be difficult
for others to speak the truth, especially in terms of pointing out the perceived faults of one's counterpart mutual
understanding.
In a comparison of personal relationships, friendship is considered to be closer than association, although
there is a range of degrees of intimacy in both friendships and associations. The study of friendship is included in
sociology, anthropology, philosophy and zoology. Various theories of friendship have been proposed, among
which are social psychology, social exchange theory, equity theory, relational dialectics and attachment styles.

Giving a dinner party is a wonderful way of entertain people. You can also make new friends and give
others the chance to get to know each other better.

It needs planning, though. First, make a guest list, with different kinds of people and a mixture of women
and men. Dont invite couples because they arent so much fun.
When you know who can come, find out what they like to eat and drink. Note down any who are
vegetarians, or who cant eat or drink certain things for religious seasons.
Then plan their menu. Include a first course, a choice of main courses and a dessert, plus lots of peoples
favourite drinks.
The next thing to do is the shopping. Make sure buy more than enough of everything, and that someone can
help you carry it!
On the day, start cooking early. Give people appetizers like Greek mezze or Spanish tapas, so they dont get
hungry if they have to wait. Serve the delicious meal, sit down with your guests and have a good time youve
earned it!
Cu 33: Which of the following is NOT mentioned as the purpose of giving a dinner party?
A. to get people to know more about their host and hostess.
B. to help people to know each other better.

THANKSGIVING
Thanksgiving is celebrated in the US on the fourth Thursday in November. For many Americans it is the
most important holiday apart from Christmas. Schools, offices and most businesses close for Thanksgiving,
and many people make the whole weekend a vacation.
Thanksgiving is associated with the time when Europeans first came to North America. In 1620 the ship
the Mayflowers arrived, bringing about 150 people who today are usually called Pilgrims. They arrived at the
beginning of a very hard winter and could not find enough to eat, so many of them died. But in the following
summer Native Americans showed them what foods were safe to eat, so that they could save food for the next
winter. They held a big celebration to thank God and the Native Americans for the fact that they had survived.
Today people celebrate Thanksgiving to remember these early days.
The most important part of the celebration is a traditional dinner with foods that come from North America.
The meal includes turkey, sweet potatoes (also called yams) and cranberries, which are made into a kind of
sauce or jelly. The turkey is filled with stuffing or dressing, and many families have their own special recipe.
Dessert is pumpkin made into a pie.
On Thanksgiving there are special television programs and sports events. In New York there is the Macy's
Thanksgiving Day Parade, when a long line of people wearing fancy costumes march through the streets with
large balloons in the shape of imaginary characters. Thanksgiving is considered the beginning of the
Christmas period, and the next day many people go out to shop for Christmas presents.

Mankind is feeling greater pressure from the expanding number of people. The area of the earth can
never be expanded. Nor are there endless sources of food and clothing. Yet people are being born faster than
they are dying. In the next forty years, the world population may double. How can so many people be fed?
What is worse, there is danger that someday mankink will have only standing room.
Birth control should be a basic policy in our country. China has the greatest number of population in
the world. With a high birth rate, the production of grains and goods will be unable to meet the need of the
people. To raise peoples living standard, we must practise birth control.
There are disadvantages of a family having more children. First, parents cannot give their children a
good breeding in food, clothing and shelter, let alone education. Second, child-rearing will exhaust the
parents, leaving no time and energy for their work. Last, a family with more children will increase the burden
of society.

The population of the world has increased more in the modern times than in all other ages of history
combined. World population totaled about 500 million in 1650. It doubled in the period from 1650-1850.
Today the population is about seven billion. Estimates based on research by the United Nations indicate that it
will increase to over 10 billion by the turn of the century.
With recent advances in science and technology, including improved agricultural methods and great
strides in medicine, some of the limiting factors in population growth have been lessened, with obvious
results. International organizations have put forward several recommendations to alleviate the problem of
overpopulation, including an increase in food production, general economic development in target areas, and a
decrease in birth rates. Most experts agree that it will be necessary to combine all three recommendations in
an effort to effect a lasting solution.
