An Observation Guide for the Classroom Visit

1. Describe the community or neighborhood where the school is
found.
2. Describe the school campus. What colors do you see? What is the
condition of the buildings?
3. Pass by the offices. What impression do you have of these
offices?
4. Walk through the school halls, the library, the cafeteria. Look
around and find out the other facilities that the school has.
The school is a 150 meters away from the main road
located in between (school name withheld) and (school name
withheld). There are a few residential buildings nearby whose
residents are mostly fishermen. The neighborhood is quiet and free
from bushes. There are four food vendors selling outside the school
gate but are not causing any hassles. Halfway of the road going to
the school is not cemented, causing discomfort to the school goers
come heavy rain pours. The community it is in is well-governed by
the barangay officials. There is peace, unity and camaraderie among
its residents.
The school campus is surrounded with concrete fences and
has a school guard controlling the entrance and exit of teachers,
students and visitors at the school gate which is painted in mint

green. The buildings are painted in mint green and ivory white. The
building are in good condition since it has been on its existence for
eight years still and the school principal is continuously looking for
ways to get a budget for school improvement. The school offices are
properly managed and are very accommodating to the students and
visitors.
Inside the school premise is an ongoing construction of a
two-storey building composed of three classrooms in each level

Observation Report
The classroom is made of concrete and is painted. Walls are
decorated with different posts, namely: academic information of
each subject areas, educational and inspirational quotes, proverbs,
classroom rules and officials, class tasks, and student portfolios.
There are also photos of the national hero, the incumbent president
of the Philippine government, his excellency, Benigno Aquino, Jr., as
well as the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Class
announcements are often written on the board.
Classroom is neatly arranged and organized as students are
assigned in groups with specific tasks to perform/accomplish daily.
It is well-ventilated with two ceiling fans and big windows for fresh
air to freely circulate inside the classroom. It is well-lighted with
two fluorescent lamps and two fluorescent light bulbs. The room
can accommodate a maximum of 50 students. Numerous teaching
aids personally made and bought by the teacher, as well as those
provided by the school are kept in a bookshelf near the teachers
table. Some of the learning materials are kept there as well.
The classroom is also provided with a flat screen t.v. and a
teachers stand which you can find in front of the class. The teacher
put some ornaments and window curtains to beautify the
classroom.

My Analysis
How do the school campus and the classroom in particular impact on
the learning of the student going to school? What are your
conclusions?
The building features and surrounding conditions are
comforting to the students which influences positive behavior in
them. The solicited positive behavior somehow encourage them to
come to school and attend their classes. Also, the good nature and
quality of the learning environment affect teachers attitudes,
behaviors and performances which is very vital in shaping young
minds and character. How the teachers are towards their duty and
responsibilities greatly affect on the students success.
How does this relate to your knowledge of child and adolescent
development? How does this relate to your knowledge of facilitating
learning?
I believe that the extremes of environmental elements have
negative effects on students and teachers and that improving these
elements has significant benefits. Physical elements in the
classroom improve comfort, well-being and attitude, and so,
perhaps, improve achievement. Students who have better attitude
usually learn more and work harder.

My Reflections
1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just
observed? Why? Why not?
Yes. It is to my advantage to work in the school because,
aside from being very near from where I live, I know the people
working in that school, and so, I believe we can work very well with
each other in designing and planning the welfare of the school and
the students. Also, the school is dear to me being a native of the
place. However, I also desire to teach the less privileged youths in

the remote areas and make a difference in their community. I want

to devote my life in the field of education.
2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning?
A school campus with pleasant and safe surroundings, fresh
air, moderate temperature and is free from the noise disturbances
make students feel better about themselves. Well-built and
beautiful buildings and complete school facilities solicits positive
responses from students. A campus exhibiting competitive
standards and provides quality education will create a good
impression on students, parents and the community as well. An
institution with staffs of good reputation and morals is also a vital
aspect of a learning environment.
3. What kind of classroom is conducive to learning?
The teacher who manages the classroom must have a good
well-being. A well-ventilated, well-lighted, well-decorated, and wellarranged classroom is conducive to learning. A classroom built
beautifully and of strong foundation is conducive to learning, too. It
is said to be conducive if it is fully equipped with instructional and
learning materials. Having a warm atmosphere of friendship among
teachers and students alike and where students can exercise their
freedom of expression without the fear of being judged and
discriminated are my ideas of a conducive classroom environment.
4. In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in number 3?
I must possess excellent classroom management skills, an
open mind to see and understand students differences, a sensitive
heart to know their needs, and a wide array of ideas to
accommodate those needs. I am willing to sacrifice my own pocket
and other resources for the good of my students and the school just
as Ive practiced in my years of teaching. I must live up to my own
expectations and not to walk on others shadows, especially when
the shadows ahead of me are not casting good examples.
5. Write your additional learning and insights here.

The appearance of the school buildings, surroundings and

classrooms reflect on the kind of educators running the institution.
Parents, students and the rest of the residents in the community
where the school stands gets their first impression of the school
from its outward looks. They connect that impression to the
teachers. The trust and respect they give to the school may depend
on that impression. Trust and respect affect teaching. Trust and
respect affect learning.
