Praising Our Police Officers (Brittany Trecker)
Think of someone who risks their life everyday in order to make yours safe. Detectives,
special agents, sheriffs. And last, but not least, police officers. These men and women chance
their safety solely for the cause of being able to protect us. From traffic stops to car crashes to
burglaries, these officers do their jobs of giving us security when we need it most with a
seemingly simple ease (Roufa). Although sometimes we may be annoyed with them, and wish
they didnt have to be so speed-specific, theyre here to protect our communities and keep us
safe, and deserve to be treated with nothing but kindness and respect. However, officers are not
always looked upon as protectors of the community, and are more so often being treated with
hostility and malice.
People against Police (Korbin Lehmann)
Recently a lot of police have been getting targeted and blamed for the actions of a couple
officers. They often get targeted because of wrongful shooting, such as when they think someone
is a threat but they arent. This has happened recently because they think a person has a gun and

Baumgardner 2

could hurt them so they shoot first. But there are many false assumptions as they later find out
that the person was never armed. People will also target the police. This happened in Des Moines
when a guy targeted and shot two police that were sitting in their cars.
Police officers do a lot of helpful things for people. They help with car crashes, fires,
criminal activities, and other problems that may happen around a town or city. They often put
their lives on the line to help people. When there is a car crash and a police officer is called to it
he will put on his lights and drive very fast. This is also very dangerous if they were to lose
control of the vehicle, but they have a duty to help someone else so they have to do it.
People have been disrespecting police officers and dont think about what police officers
do for them. People have created sayings such as, F*** the police. People will say this because
they dont like how a police officer is trying to enforce the law and encouraging people to not
break the law and commit crimes. There are many jokes about police and some people refer to
them as pigs which is very disrespectful towards someone that is willing to put his life on the line
to protect you.
Police officers keep the community safe by trying to get criminals off the streets and they
try to stop the drug problem as much as possible. They will also keep the roadways safe by
stopping people who are speeding or breaking other traffic law. They will also make sure that
they stop people who are driving intoxicated. Police officers will do this by sitting outside bars
and pulling people over if they seem too intoxicated to drive.

Local Police (By Nethaniel Jones)

Baumgardner 3

There are a total of 15 police in Carroll, Iowa. They risk their lives to help keep you safe.
Without police where would police be today? There would be killings, robberies, and many
more. In the state of Iowa there are a total of 23+ police and one k9 that died in in Carroll, Iowa
2016. There are also two policemen, Scott M. Greene and Sgt. Anthony Beminio who got shot
with a .223 caliber a mile and a half away they were about a mile away from each other. There
are many police that die by risking their life to save yours. Many that have a wife and kids, it has
to be sad here that your mom or dad get killed by a bullet of other things and at the same time
happy for keeping you safe. All people that risk their lives should come home to see their kids
and family instead of having their families worry if they're going to live or die. Police don't get
paid enough for what they have to go through everyday. There are many forces that risk their
lives like firemen, swat, army, police and many more that will kill themselves to save your life.
This is why we came up with this fund raiser to say thank you to all police that have been in the
force for many years.
The Beginning Plan
(By: Katie Riesselman)
At the beginning of our project, we had to think long and hard on what would leave an
impact on not only the police officers, but also the other members in the community as well. To
do this we researched recent tragedies, memorials, and different services that were held for other
police departments. We than thought of the idea to host a supper for the officers in the town of
Carroll. Throughout this thought process we had many different opinions and ideas that would
contribute to the end project. We asked ourselves, who should we invite? Should it be a supper
or a breakfast? Where will this be held? We spoke to different people around us and eventually
came up with a solid idea. Bill Baddeley, the PE teacher at Carroll High School, used to host a

Baumgardner 4

dinner for the volunteers around Carroll. He explained to us that he had the dinner right here at
the Carroll High School in the large commons. Without question, we knew that hosting this
event at the high school would be a great idea. Also, Bill reminded us of the many things that we
needed to provide. Food, drinks, and much more. Before we could continue this project, we had
to ask the police department is hosting an event like this would be okay. Our group went and
talked to local police chief, Brad Burke. He assured us that hosting an event like this would be
acceptable and very good idea. After contacting the police department, we needed to continue
planning out the other information needed. We had the idea to host a fundraising event at Pizza
Ranch. By doing this, we could raise enough money to pay for the supplies that we needed. To
start this process off, we had to contact the Pizza Ranch manager, Paul. Paul was very helpful
and told us extra information needed to put this plan in action. Since we are not aloud to hold
onto the money ourselves of board policy, we had Pizza Ranch hold onto it for us. We asked
them if we could use the money we raised to pay for Pizza Ranch to deliver and serve the food to
the high school. They quickly agreed. Pizza Ranch not only will deliver and serve, but they will
bring the utensils the police department will use to eat their food. Although Pizza Ranch does not
provide drinks, we all agreed to pitch in by purchasing or making a dessert, and bringing a
beverage. Our ideas for this project kept growing and expanding quickly. Our process of creating
this project went by very smoothly because we all care about our police department. We are
trying to make a difference in lives of men that keep us safe.
Our Night at Pizza Ranch (Cierra Baumgardner)
Our fundraising event at Pizza Ranch was on Monday, Nov. 21, between 4:45 pm and 8
pm. Katie, Korbin, Brittany, and Nethaniel, were all there but we also had some volunteers

Baumgardner 5

including Jada Snyder, Jordan Murray, and Jang. Our team worked as busboys, clearing tables of
plates and being nice to the customers. By the end of the night, we had raised $336.86. The next
day we called Pizza Ranch again, and we discussed what we wanted to have for our supper. We
decided to have chicken, greens beans, and mashed potatoes brought from Pizza Ranch. We are
also going to be bringing our own food to serve at the supper, one salad and one dessert from
each person. Korbin is bringing taco salad and chocolate chip cookies. Katie is bringing potato
salad and brownies. Brittany is bringing another dish of taco salad and sugar cookies. I am
bringing macaroni salad and a kit-kat pudding pie. We will be hosting the supper on December
16, between 5-7:30 pm.
The video we plan on showing on the tv in the large commons at the supper includes a
bunch of articles about the police from the newspaper, and clips of children from the middle
saying thank you to the police officers. It will play throughout the supper so that the police
officers can watch it while they eat. We hope that the officers will like our video and enjoy the
meal and know that we appreciate what they do for our community.

The Final Supper (Brittany Trecker)

The supper were going to have, we plan to be very successful. After meeting with Pizza
Ranch, the Chief of Police, several classrooms of younger children, and actually hosting
fundraising event nights at Pizza Ranch, were all going to be glad to finally see our idea become
real. Our first plan of action towards this thank you dinner is the decorations. Since our large
common colors mix in between bright orange to dull yellow white, we decided to go a classy

Baumgardner 6

way, with decorations in the colors of silver and black. Were planning on wrapping streamers
around the stone pillars, and maybe tying some balloons to the ends of the lunch tables. The
supper will start at six, with food, silverware, and plates brought by Pizza Ranch. My group
members and I will bring several different salads and desserts for the guests to choose from. As
for drinks, well also be providing those, from different types of pop such as Mountain Dew,
Root Beer, and Dr. Pepper. Water and possibly milk and coffee will also be provided. Its key for
our group to give the guests as wide of an option as can be provided. We plan on setting up
around thirty to twenty minutes before. There will be tables that we will bring in to set the food
on, like how they do when the football boys do team meal. It will be set up so that the guests can
go through the line, with drinks and desserts last. Our group plans to stand behind the food and
drinks, and help or refill whenever we can, especially with the children or if a family needs an
extra hand. When the guests are eating we will play the thank you video. After, a short speech
just saying an extra thank you and listing some great things the police officers do. The video will
play on the TV with the help of Ms. Schulz, and we plan to play it on a repeat for the second half
of the night. The video will end, and I assume short conversations with the guests will follow.
When they leave we will help tear down the decorations and clean up. All of our group is hoping
that this night will go off exactly as planned, and that it is as successful as can be.
Conclusion (Katie Riesselman)
I believe this dinner has affected our local police officers in Carroll County in many
different ways. By doing this, we have showed support and respect. Not only did our project
effect the police officers, but it affected the community around us. Sometimes the little things
can mean the most to people. Showing a good example for children of all ages will affect how

Baumgardner 7

the police officers are treated. The little actions we take will eventually turn big. Just because
you start small, does not mean you are going to end small.
