online and are supported by weekly videocasts, voice-recorded sessions, workbooks and ebooks. You
will have both directed and independent learning to acquire a deeper and broader understanding of the
subject area.
You are encouraged to attend an induction session which will give detailed guidance on how to
maximise your potential as a distance learning student. There are a number of optional workshops
which you can attend and you are encouraged to maintain regular communication with tutors via

Assessment Methods

As this is a work-based programme in which you are employed and studying at a distance, you will be
assessed by assignments which, wherever possible, are individually negotiated to ensure relevance to
you, your employer and your career aspirations. Assessments are typically designed to encourage
recommendations for self or organisational improvement. There are no examinations.
In the final year you will undertake a major in-depth professional project which is usually related to your
workplace or career aspirations.

Careers
Work-based learners are already employed and join the programme at different stages based on their
prior work experience and educational qualifications. Typically those who join the programme are new
to the world of work, often completing an apprenticeship programme, in an administrative or technical
post and/or aspiring to a leadership or management role. Some students hold team leadership, first-line
or middle management positions and are looking to underpin their experience with an academic
qualification.
Typically graduates progress into first-line or middle management roles across a range of business
disciplines, including human resource management, marketing, operations, finance, accounting and
sales, in organisations based within the public, private and voluntary sector. Other graduates often use
their qualification to develop their own business enterprises.
