Appendix A
A large building services company (Iains & Co) currently employs a team of IT technicians to
manage their IT infrastructure and support the IT users. Recently, the company has taken over a
similar but smaller company which also employs technical support staff in the same way.
The company feels that it needs a centralised ITbased support system that will track, monitor
and report on the progress of problems identified by users across the two sites generally
improving the IT support service.
The IT Support System needs to monitor the use if IT hardware, such as: keyboard, monitor,
printer, system unit, laptop, CD writer, mouse, to improve the service provided to users and
ensure the service is operated in an efficient way. You have already met with the network
manager and he has provided the main requirements of the system. The responsibility for
monitoring each hardware item is allocated to a specific employee.
Key information already identified includes:
Employee details
Hardware location, hardware details, hardware types
Supplier types
Problem descriptions
This list is not exhaustive and needs to be extended, as appropriate to meet the
networkmanagers needs as described below:
Know what hardware there is, who supplied it and which employee is responsible forit.
What hardware items are in each room
Know what problems have been reported by particular employees
Know what specific items and types of hardware are having problems
