Design examples
Design of multi-use building located at jimma town.
Material properties
Use C25 concrete grade
S300 Steel grade
Beam Section = 300*300mm
Column Section = 500*450mm(Rectangular)
All slabs are solid with 170mm depth
Roof is also solid slab with 160mm depth
Reinforcement bar dia.
20 for main bars ;
8 for distribution bars
concrete cover = 25mm

1. Set the unit


Select base unit to KN-m

2. Open a New Model


Click the File menu New Model No

3. Set building Plan Grid System and Story Data definition.

Select the Grid Only button. OK


4. Edit grid spacing in x and y direction.
Click the Edit menu Edit grid data Edit grid Modify/show
system edit spacing(X and Y dir) Ok.
5. Edit story height
Click the Edit menu Edit story data Edit story OK

6. Define material properties


Click the define menu material properties conc./other/steel
Add new material fill analysis property data and design property
data OK

7. Define frame section (i.e Beam and column)


Click the define menu frame section Add/wide flange select
type of section OK set section name (i.e beam or column)
select your material set dimension Reinforcement Beam
OK.
OR Reinforcement column configuration of Reinforcement
(Rect. / circular) lateral Reinforcement (Ties/spiral) select bar
size OK
8. Define wall/slab/deck section
Click the define menu wall /slab/deck section Add new
wall/slab/deck respectively select section name select material
type (conc./steel/other) OK.
For Deck Add new deck select section name solid slab set
slab depth select material OK.

9. Draw Column Objects


Make sure that the Plan View is active
Click the Create Columns in Region or at Clicks button or use
the Draw menu Draw Line Objects Create Columns in
Region or at Clicks command.

Make sure that the Property item on the Properties of Object form
exist.
Draw the columns.
Click the File menu Save command, or the Save button, to save
your model.
10.Draw the Lateral Force-Resisting Beam Objects
Make sure that the Plan View is active.
Click the Create Lines in Region or at Clicks button, or the
Draw menu Draw Line Objects Create Lines in Region
or at Clicks command.

Click once in the drop-down list opposite the Property item


to activate it and then scroll down to select your property in
the resulting list.
Draw the columns.
Click the File menu Save command, or the Save button,
to save your model.

11.Draw the Floor Area Objects


Make sure that the Plan View is active
Click the Draw Areas button, or select the Draw menu Draw Area
Objects Draw Areas command.

Click once in the drop-down list opposite the Property


item to activate it and then scroll down to select your
property in the resulting list.
Draw the columns.
Click the File menu Save command, or the Save
button, to save your model.
12.Define Static Load Cases
It consist of the dead, live, earthquake and wind loads acting
on the building.
Click the Define menu Static Load Cases command or click
the Define Static Load Cases button.
The Self Weight Multiplier is set to 1 for the DEAD case and 0
for other loads.
For earthquake load cases,
Click the Define menu Static Load Cases Auto lateral
load select user coefficient or user loads X and ydirection edit factors.
13.Load combination
Click the Define menu Load combination Add new
combination.

14.Assign Gravity Loads


In this Step, the superimposed dead and live gravity loads will be applied to the
model.
Make sure that the Similar Stories feature is enabled and that the Plan View is
active.
Click anywhere on the deck (but not on a beam) to select the deck.
Click the Assign > Shell/Area Loads > Uniform command or click the Assign
Uniform Load button.

Load case name =live /dead(portion)


Unit =KN-m
Fill the load
Direction=Gravity (down ward)
Option =Add to existing loads
Click the OK button to accept the load.
Click the File menu Save command

15. Assign wind loads


Click in the 3D View window to make that window active
Click the View menu Set Building View Options area local axes object
fill OK
click on the Elevation View button select axis Ok
using selection box window select around all of the panels in this elevation view
Click the Assign menu Shell/Area Loads Wind Pressure Coefficient.
Select WINDX from the Wind Load Case Name drop-down list.

Set the Coeff, Cp to 0.9 and 0.5and check the Windward (varies) and Leeward or
Sides (constant) option respectively.
Set replace existing load Ok

16. Assign frame or line load


Click anywhere on the beam (but not on a deck) to select the beam
Click the Assign Frame/Line Loads Distributed or click the
Assign Frame Distributed Load button.
Load case name=
Load type and direction = force and gravity
Unit =KN-m
Add to existing load
Fill trapezoidal loads
Click the OK button to accept the uniform superimposed dead
load
Click the File menu > Save command

17. Display results for checking


Click on analysis menu check model
18. Adjust support condition
One story plan (base) select using selection box Assign joint/point
restrain(support)pin
Click the File menu Save command
19. Save the model
Click the File menu Save command.
20. Select design code
Click the option menu preference concrete frame designEurocode-2-1992
21. Run the Analysis
Click the Analyze menu Run Analysis command or the Run Analysis button
22. Generate output
Analysis result will be viewed using graphical representation.
Click the Display menu Show Member Force/Stresses Diagram Frame/
Pier/Spandrel Forces

1. Select DEAD Static Load from the Load drop-down list.


2. Select the Moment 3-3 option and for Axial force select shear 2-2
3. Uncheck the Fill Diagram if it is checked.
4. Check the Show Values on diagram check box.
5. Click the OK button to generate the moment shear force diagram output.
