Awakened dire animals have been imbued with sentience and the ability to speak intelligently
by powerful druidical magics.
A dire wolf is an immense grey or black wolf, about 8 feet long and weighing some 700 lbs.

COMBAT
Dire wolves prefer to attack in packs, surrounding and flanking the foe when they can.

Trip (Ex): A dire wolf that hits with a bite attack can attempt to trip the opponent as a free action
(see pg. 139 in the PH) without making a touch attack or provoking an attack of opportunity.
If the attempt fails, the opponent cannot react to trip the dire wolf.

Sneak Attack (Rogue Class Feature): If the rogue can catch an opponent when he is unable to
defend himself, she can strike a vital area for extra damage. Any time the rogue's target is denied his
Dexterity bonus to AC, or when the rogue flanks the target, the rogue's attack deals +1d6 at first level
and an additional 1d6 every two levels thereafter.
Awakened (Ex): An awakened dire wolf is intelligent and can speak common.
Skills: A dire wolf receives a +1 racial bonus to Listen, Move Silently, and Spot checks and a
+2 racial bonus to Hide checks. *It also receives a +4 racial bonus to Wilderness Lore when tracking
by scent. Scent (Ex) is described on page 10 of the Monster Manual.
Awakened Dire Wolf Cohort: The dire wolf's effective character level (ECL) is it's class +3. The wolf
begins with one level of rogue, and can advance as barbarian or rogue. It has the normal stats of the dire
wolf in the Monster Manual (page 57) except that is has an Intelligence of 11, Charisma of 12 and +2 HD.
