INTRODUCTION

elcome and thank you for purchasing the BLACKBOX Widebody Prologue.

The purpose of this manual is to provide you with the initial information and obtain the
skills required to fly the Airbus 330 and A340 series. We would like point out that the
Prologue version does not simulate all the intricate systems found on these aircraft Yet,
however it contains most of the basic systems that makes it fly and operate just like a real
Airbus should and we will be adding to these systems and updating your product for free!
In the final V1.00 Airbus Widebody, all systems will be implemented and operating as
accurately as possible making it the most accurate Airbus ever created for flight simulation.
We will also provide you with a more comprehensive manual in line with an official Airline
FCOM (Flight Crew Operating Manual) that will cover all the systems and procedures, and
for you to obtain all the skills required to fly the aircraft just like the professionals would
.
The Airbus Widebody Family are complex aircraft and require a certain degree of learning
to understand how the aircraft works. During initial test flights and operations of the real
aircraft several pilots were left baffled and sometimes unable to recover from certain
situations due to the inability to understand its complex systems and automation. So, we do
advise you to read through the manuals to fully understand and to teach yourself how to fly
one of the most advanced airliners of its time.

What makes the aircraft so unique?

The family consists of medium to long range, twin and 4 engine aircraft. They consist of the
A330-200, A330-300, A330-200F, A340-300 and the biggest in the fleet The A340-600. We
have also included the A330-MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) Aircraft as well for the
Military flyers amongst you.
Real World Airbus Customers have the option to choose between many power plants.
The General Electric CF6-80E1, the Pratt & Whitney PW4000 PW4164 or the RollsRoyce Trent 700 768 Engines for the A330 Family and the CFM56-5C or Rolls Royce
Trent 500 Series for the A340 Family. You have the same choices with your Blackbox
Airbus Widebody Family with 12 different Variants to choose from and More to come!
What made the aircraft so different and unique from other airliners was that it has the
amazing Airbus fly-by-wire (FBW) system. One other unique feature was the elimination of
the control column and its replacement by what is known as a side stick. In effect, the FBW
system completely replaces the conventional system of cables and hydraulics.
In a conventional aircraft when the pilot moves the yoke or stick or the rudder pedals, this
directly manipulates cables that displace the control surfaces. This is still used effectively on
light aircraft however on airliners since the control surfaces are bigger it requires a greater
effort from the pilot to operate, so the FBW System directly commands the hydraulic
systems. With FBW the aircraft is controlled through computers sensors. The sensors
determine the amount of deflection, or movement, needed in the control surfaces (using
data such as airplane altitude and airspeed) and send this information to hydraulic
actuators which then move the ailerons, elevators and rudder.
The system is controlled by several dedicated computers and operates all the primary and
secondary flight controls by a combination of electronic signalling and hydraulic jacks. Very
high safety standards have been built into the flight control systems, with system
redundancy and with flight envelope protection, which will not allow manoeuvres to
exceed the aircrafts structural and aerodynamic limitations.
One other feature is that all aircraft in the Airbus family including A318, 319, 320, 321, 330
and 340 share a very similar cockpit and even the super jumbo A380 and the very latest
A350 XWB, all share the recognisable cockpit layout which makes it easier for pilots to
transition from one aircraft to another, thus saving time and money for airline companies.
Today, the Widebody Family have become and remain one of Airbus Industries most
popular and bestselling Medium to Long range airliners. We are sure you will see why.
And we hope you will enjoy flying them too!

THROTTLE CALIBRATION

When you first load your BlackBox Airbus you will need to calibrate your joystick
throttle lever(s) to allow proper use of the thrust lever detents and modes.
You MUST Do this now! We now have a setup wizard which will prompt you if the
Throttles are not calibrated but for clarification the steps are as follows.
Available Throttle Modes selectable by pressing LSKL1 (Line Select Key Left 1)
Keys Only No hardware throttle control
Uses standard FSX key assignments F1->F4 or PgUp/PgDn for throttle control
Single 1 Hardware throttle input
Your single hardware throttle axis will control all available engines Must be assigned to
Throttle Axis In Flightsim/Settings/ Controls/ Control Axis
Paired 2 Hardware throttle inputs
Must be assigned to Engine 1 Throttle Axis & Engine 2 Throttle Axis
In Flightsim/Settings/ Controls/ Control Axis
Separate 4 Hardware throttle inputs
Must be assigned to Engine axis 1, 2, 3 and 4 for Individual engines on A340, For A330 axis 3
and 4 will be ignored.

1. Open the MCDU and press the MCDU MENU button

2. Press the Input Calibration button on LSK R3 (line select key right 3)
3. Select your preference as above by cycling through the selections with LSK L1 Key

THROTTLE CALIBRATION
1. Move all throttle levers firstly to their MINIMUM position on your joystick and then
press EACH corresponding LSK L KEY TO Store the lower limits

(if you wish to use a reverse thrust region this minimum position should be your
throttle idle position, anything below this will be treated as reverse thrust)
2. Move all throttle levers to their MAXIMUM position on your joystick and then press
EACH corresponding LSK R KEY TO Store the Upper limit

Your throttles are now calibrated and you can also test them on this page by moving the
levers between idle and max. The green bars will show the throttle position as seen by your
Airbus and should move smoothly.
The Null Zone entry LSK R1 is recommended to be left at [30] but If you have difficulty in
selecting a detent position or notice the Auto thrust dropping out of detent, this value can
be increased as required in steps of 10
NOTE : These settings will be saved automatically so should never need recalibrating
unless you change controller or settings.

Page 11

ADVANCED THROTTLE CALIBRATION

Certain hardware especially older more worn controllers have been noted to give some
position jitter which can adversely affect your enjoyment of the BlackBox Airbus Products
by causing throttles to jump in and out of detents and report spurious position changes.
To combat this we have added the following configuration override option.
Users can add the following entry to the settings file
FSX - UserSettings.ini
FSX Steam Edition - UserSettings_FSXSE.ini
Prepar3D v3 - UserSetting_P3Dv3.ini
inside the path :"C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\BlackBox Simulation\Airbus Widebody Family\"
[Thottle]
DeltaOverride=256
Delta value can be from 32 - 1024, we recommend increasing it gradually in units of 64 until
satisfactory results are achieved the default value is 128.

STEERING TILLER, RUDDER AND TAXIING

Just like in the Real World, Your Blackbox Widebody Aircraft are fitted with two
separate methods of steering on the ground. You have RUDDER control as normal for
Takeoff and Landing. For taxiing, Parking and tight turns you have the STEERING
TILLER.
To set these up you will need to assign a controller to the TILLER Function. For your
convenience, we have used the Flightsim Tail hook Handle for this operation but you
will need to set up your control key/button to use it.
1. From the Flightsim Menu, open OPTIONS/SETTINGS/CONTROLS and select the
BUTTONS/KEYS Tab.
2. Scroll down the list of available controls until you find the entry
Tail hook (up/ down)
3. Double click in the KEY or BUTTON column and set your preferred key or button, we
recommend using T as it is unassigned elsewhere in the sim. Alternatively, you can
also set any Joystick button or key of your choice.
Thats it. You can now Toggle between RUDDER control and TILLER STEERING by pressing
the newly assigned key/button. There is also an indicator on the FSX Window to show you
which is selected but the TILLER is automatically disengaged on takeoff as your speed
increases. You should not notice this as the reduction in steering angle blends with the
increase in Rudder effectiveness as speed increases.
This completes the Quick Start Guide and you should now be ready to fly the Widebody
Airbus of your choice. We have included a short tutorial flight between LMML (Malta)
and LIEE (Sardinia) that will allow plenty of time to set up the Airbus and fly the route
with time to spare if you are still in DEMO MODE. But you can of course use your own
routes at any time. You will find details of how to enter, save and load new routes in
the tutorial. We would highly recommend continue to the tutorial flight to get used to the
Airbus Logic and controls. Especially if you are used to the more conventional flying like
Boeings and GA Aircraft.
