Staten Island - by the Sea and the

Bay & Parts in Between

NEW!

Group Tours & Travel LLC

Staten Island offers an abundance of beautiful, historic and
interesting places to explore. Today we visit a few of the best
attractions this small but diverse island has to offer. We begin
with a tour of the palatial St. George Theatre (1929), perhaps
the most beautiful theatre in America! This opulent theatre can
best be described with the words, They dont build them like
this anymore. The group will be breathless as we gaze at the
beauty this architectural treasure possesses. Lunch is included
in the South Fin Grill, a popular area restaurant seated
alongside the recently rebuilt Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk.
After time to stroll this beautiful boardwalk, we depart to the
nearby Conference House (1680). This is the site of the failed
1776 Peace Conference that was attended by John Adams, Lord
Howe, Benjamin Franklin and others. Had it been a successful
meeting, The American Revolution would not have occurred.
Surrounded by forests, marshland and meadows, it overlooks
the Arthur Kill River, Lower Raritan Bay and nearby New Jersey.
Our tour of this premier site provides us with fascinating stories
that relate to this building and its Colonial importance. It is
among a handful of fully restored American buildings that date
back over 330 years. Please choose one entre per person at
the time of registration: Pan Roasted Chicken Breast, Miso
Glazed Salmon or Bacon Cheeseburger.

some historical information and tips on perfecting your favorite
recipe from those sampled. Come hungry, because you will be
tasting a minimum of 6 different brownies and shortbreads.

Scandinavian Danish Braid

NEW!
Kim Hendrickson
If you have fond memories of this soft, buttery, yeast-based dough
braid filled with fruit or cheese, this is the class for you. It was cut
and sold by the pound in old fashion bakeries. Some people
incorrectly call this a strudel, but it is a very dramatic dessert or
brunch item that is actually very easy to make. Kim will walk you
through the basics of making this delightful dough. While it chills
she will bake and serve the demo braid. There will be time for
each person to make a small braid the very first night to take
home. Night two will be your opportunity to fill and bake another
braid with your favorite filling, sweet or savory to take home to eat
or freeze. No baking experience required. Please bring an apron,
oven mitt, chopping and paring knife and containers (to take
home leftovers) to class. Tuition includes food fee of $30.

fondant decorations. Buttercream is back and this class will
show you how to use it. This a basic level decorating class,
anyone can do it! Students come to class with baked cake
layers OR styrofoam discs that we will decorate. On the first
night we will talk about tips and tricks to frost and fill layer
cakes. Then we will practice basic decorating skills. On the
second night, we will create and decorate our cakes. Why pay a
ton of money for a fancy birthday cake when you can make a
great tasting cake to celebrate any event. Please bring an apron,

Pilates, Yoga & Floor Barre

Lynn Needle & AOM Faculty

These classes incorporate Eastern and Western philosophies to work the body in its entirety. Yoga, (eastern) integrates asanas,
proper alignment, mental focus, breathing and flexibility as well as learning to stabilize and strengthen muscle groups. Western
disciplines, such as Pilates and floor barre exercises seek to maximize understanding, endurance and toning of the body. Mat
work designed by Joseph Pilates at the turn of the century emphasizes principles of opposition, lengthening of muscle groups
and isolation of body parts. Classes vary from mat classes to ball class, which includes center floor work on a large Pilates
stability ball. Therabands and yoga bricks are used as teaching tools. Mat work is eventually taught at the ballet barre and
developed into standing work. Floor barre exercises include simple plies, leg extensions, hip and abdominal isolations as well
as a back strengthening series. Classes focus on strengthening the body as an instrument. Please bring a yoga mat and wear
comfortable clothing. Some classes may feature guest faculty from AOM and NYC.

will/medical power of attorney. Seniors are also often totally
unaware of taxes that may be due to the state of NJ or the
federal government on their death. They are unaware that NJ
has the highest death taxes in any state in the country. Most
elders believe that estate taxes are being phased out and are
of no concern. Few know about the new estate tax New

larger than $675,000. New Jersey also has an inheritance tax
that can be as high as 16%. This tax is imposed on the
estates of people who have no spouse or children and leave
the money to other family members or friends. Methods to
reduce these taxes as well as the pros and cons of gifts and

HANDCRAFTING

Creating Fine Silver Jewelry for Beginners

Terry Kovalcik
This beginner's workshop will explore the seemingly endless
possibilities of creating silver jewelry with Precious Metal Clay.
It will introduce you to the different types of PMC (lump, sheet
and paste) in an easy step-by-step format. Topics covered will
include: working with the clay, creating forms, carving, molding,
texturing, firing, oxidizing, and polishing. Participants will
explore these techniques with an eye toward finding their own
voice and style through a choice of projects - pendants, hollow
forms, decorative beads, constructed forms and earrings. PMC
is a unique jewelry making material. This user-friendly product
is a malleable substance that is composed of fine silver
particles in an organic binder. It can be sculpted and
manipulated like potter's clay. After firing in a kiln, all that is left
is your unique design in pure (.999) silver. Materials fee* is
payable directly to instructor at class.
*Depends on price of silver Please note: Precious Metal Clay (PMC) is
based on the market price of silver which fluctuates daily. Due to the
continuing rise in the price of the silver, the price listed here may not
accurately reflect the current price of the material. Prices may end up
being higher or lower. At the time of this printing, the cost of PMC

Singing Bowls for

Healing & Relaxation

Maryann Gebhardt & Joan Tarrant

Singing bowls are used in yoga, music
therapy, and sound healing. They are
also played to signal the beginning and
the end of silent meditation. Like a bell,
the tone is produced by striking the side
of the bowl with a wooden mallet. By
running the mallet around the bowl only with slight pressure - a pure tone
will eventually rise. When this happens,
the bowl is said to sing. Tibetan singing
bowls vibrate and produce a deep
relaxation, the singing bowls are also
used in combination with other healing
practices, such as meditation and deep
breathing. This class will be deeply
relaxing, starting with gentle yoga
stretches, followed by listening to the
healing tones of the bowls. More
information about the bowls will be
discussed. Mary Ann & Joan will have
over 50 singing bowls. Bring a yoga mat
and a blanket to cover up with.

Ayurveda translated ~ Ayur means life,
and veda means wisdom, which gives us
"knowledge of life". Health is more than
the absence of disease. Good health is
the result of harmonious inner balance.
A dedicated practice of dinacharya (daily
routine) will nourish our bodies and
souls, as we cultivate self-care. From an
Ayurvedic perspective, following a daily
self-care ritual also aligns us with rhythms
of nature, seasonal routines will be also

ELL English Language Learners

This class is intended for those who
may have studied English in school
but want to practice with a native
speaker. This is the course to learn
phrases and expressions that are
uniquely American. Don't feel like you
are "the new kid on the block." Or
that you are "going nuts" when you
hear a native speaker. We'll use
conversational activities, games and
other exercises to "bone up" on new
idioms and slang as well as learn about
American culture. Students will be
asked to buy a textbook ($15 to $30.)

Shinrin-yoku can be defined as taking

bathing. Closely linked with the human
evolutionary process, it is a walk in
nature, for its therapeutic effects. Those
who spend time in the woods
experience lower levels of cortisol
(which induces stress), a lower pulse
rate, lower blood pressure and healthier
blood sugar levels. It has now become a
recognized relaxation and/or stress
management activity in Japan. Join us as
we unwind and enjoy the natural beauty
of our areas forests. Please wear

Catching a Colleges Eye With Your Essay For High School Seniors

Lisa Paterson, writethisway.biz

Find out the answer to this question with this four week workshop. You wont just find out the answer, you will write your essays! Why
this class? Because Lisa speaks with many admissions officers at various colleges and universities and she understands what the are
looking for in the application essays. She knows how to guide you to pick a topic and hook your reader and she will encourage you
to write an essay in a concise, crisp and clear way so it will stand out. She teaches you to SHOW who you arenot just tell who
you are. The four, two hour sessions involve techniques and strategies for brainstorming and writing. Youll learn tips, have
discussions, ask questions and receive feedback. You will get insights into how to answer the prompts. You will write during class,
but it is expected that you will also write between classes. The course fee includes back and forth emails of your essay drafts (after
you send a draft, Lisa reads the essay, re-reads it, creates questions and offers feedback as needed. She then sends it back. You will
make changes/additions, etc. and then send it back to Lisa. She will suggest when its ready to submit). The only way to discover
your true story is through your revisions. Drafts must sent to the instructor in a timely fashion. Deadlines will be set with all students.
The goal is to finish the Common Application essay and one supplemental essay that will differentiate you in a deeply personal way.
