Safety of Navigation Use of real time (online) AIS

Information for maritime domain
awareness and safety
Use of real time (online) AIS Information for maritime domain
awareness and safety
Monitoring of restricted areas;
Monitoring mandatory routes;
Providing and monitoring domains (guard zones) around specific objects,
(obstructions, new wrecks, anchored vessels, rigs, AtoNs, etc);
Generating alerts in shore based monitoring centres;
Providing data for Port State Control, Port Authorities, Coast Guard Centres
and other authorities and services;
Providing data for Search and Rescue;
Monitoring vessels of particular interest

Safety of Navigation AIS Information for

marine accident investigations
AIS provides Marine Accident Investigation Boards with
historical AIS-data to:
Identify historic location of a vessel (tracks) at a certain
time in a certain area that could have caused an incident
/accident;
Analyse behaviour of vessels involved in accidents or
near misses (replay of situation before and during the
incident).

22

www.greenfinder.asia

Security
Although AIS is primarily and foremost a navigation tool
for collision avoidance, the JLM believes that the AIS will
also improve security.
1AISNet increases the JLMs awareness of vessels in the
maritime domain, especially vessels approaching
Malaysian ports.
The AIS corroborates and provides identification and
position of vessels not always possible through voice
radio communication or radar alone.

23

www.greenfinder.asia

Protection of Marine Environment

Through the use of AIS data, JLM can:
Geo-fence environmentally sensitive or Marine
Protected Areas (MPA)
Fuse AIS data with radar/optical assets
Maintain vessel historical track for investigative
reporting purposes
Track historical analyses of traffic within MPA

24

www.greenfinder.asia

Protection of Marine Environment

This enables:
Automated alerting of vessels entering MPA
Detection and identification of oil spills and pollution
Automatic alerts of vessels entering environmental zone
Identification of incident suspects by track replay
Prediction of vessels approaching navigation hazards
Increase in violator prosecutions

Environmental Health Protection

The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are
responsible for more than 100 tons per day of smogand particulate-forming nitrogen oxides (NOX) more
than the daily emissions from all 6 million cars in the
region, according to William A. Burke, chairman of the
South Coast Air Quality Management District.
The largest amount of emissions (53%) is generated by
ships approaching the port. A vessel speed reduction
program requesting vessels to slow from 20-25 knots to
12 knots at a distance 20 nautical miles from port could
reduce emissions from vessels up to 80%.
