3. Do we need more
membership or
representation on our LT
by other
departments/teams?

Jessi

Decision

5 min.

Representative do not need to be content specific; each

grade, each team, specials, possible representation from
other committees (AVID, PBIS, etc.), and student support
services (guidance, social work etc.) Pull in more staff to
represent each department? Only real need is math
representation for our Vision Card. Representation by
grade, team, and staff from other committees so focus can
be on Vision Card. Need 8th grade Cougar and Student
Services added to the LT.
Do we need team leaders on LT? No, time given to reps to
talk at team meetings.
Steve mentioned knowledge of Vision Card would be easier
for discussion with team leaders being on LT.
Pros and cons. We are asking certain staff to do a lot. Team
leaders now on LT, on AVID, on PBIS. Could get tough for

some to continue it all.

Decided: Team Leaders will also be on LT.
4. How can we best use
the 16 Characteristics
graphic to support
conversations around
middle school philosophy?

Monde

Discussion

45
min.

Leadership team discusses and identifies gaps and areas of

emphasis
-16 Characteristics can help guide our Vision Card
Building culture needs to be focused on. In This We Believe
seems to be a book study, maybe we focus on the culture
piece.
Give every team the safe and inclusive piece to work on.
This piece will need to be added to the Vision Card.
Staff will use the graphic in fall, all teams (whole school)
will focus on: Culture and Community
Each team will focus on The school environment in inviting,
safe, inclusive, and supportive of all
Each team will determine their action step based on that
characteristic..
Action steps will be measured on the Vision Card.

5. What is the purpose of

staff meetings at PWMS?
How often do we have
them? When do they take
place?

Jessi

Discussion

30
min.

Franklin has gone away from staff meetings. Occasionally

talk about AVID. Had around four meetings this year.
East has staff meetings on prep days. What about staff that
have after-school duties with coaching/advising?
Meetings should not be used for housekeeping. These need
to be meetings in which we learn/develop something. Not
just meeting to meet.
Have to get these dates on a calendar asap so teachers can
plan accordingly.
Think about this and speak with colleagues before our next
meeting.
If we start going to after-school, would this eliminate the
prep day PD?
Staff meetings do not replace PD on workshop days, but

opportunities will be shortened based on this.

We need to give staff a heads-up for meetings.
Communicate with staff contractually how many hours we
can meet for staff meetings quarterly and on PD/Workshop
days.
Contract language:
3 meetings/ month within contract time
4 meetings per calendar year for 1 hour outside of contract
time
Double check language for PD specific time
Schedule staff meetings for the fall to make sure staff get
this when they arrive for fall workshop.
Jessi will put together a calendar for meeting times. Vision
Card will drive PD. Meetings after school, calendar provided
for staff to plan ahead.
After school meetings-Dates to be determined
6. What do the first couple Jessi
of weeks look like for
students and parents?
How do we best support
students in making the
transition to PWMS?
How do we best support
parents in making the
transition to PWMS? What
should fall open house look
like? What should entrance
conferences look like?
7. What will we continue
to do to unite our PWMS
staff?

Steve

Discussion

45 min

Put a committee together to help create the Orientation and

Back-to-School Nights. Steve will put that out to staff in a
weekly bulletin.
Can teachers be compensated to be on this committee? How
long to these meetings have to be? Are staff volunteering
their time? Dont want staff to think everything is paid.

Discussion

9. What should our 20162017 Vision Card look

Jessi

Discussion

PWMS Committees/Teams

PD is generated using our vision card.

How do we set PLCs up for success at PWMS?
Started 2016-2017 VisionCard for PWMS combing Franklin
and EJH VisionCards from 2015-2016
Compared Franklin and EJH Vision Cards, made some
revisions. Will look in more detail at institute to add
initiatives and activities.

10. What is the best

PWMS Draft Schedules

Schedule

Steve

Discussion

60
min.

We talked about WIN time, supervision going to look

different - wont have a study hall. May have lunch duty, hall
duty, etc - similar to HS right now.
Study halls are mostly wasted time. Could we provide more
opportunities? Exploratory?
Reorganize team time to before school to open up the
schedule.
Beginning 2016-2017, all 6-12 teachers are under the 330
minutes student contact time.
Still a work in progress. Meetings will occur with Steve and
Monde to look at schedule with specific explanations.

Next Meeting:

Parking Lot Questions

Instead of having random
acts of family engagement,
how do we use family

All LT members will read In This We Believe, ordered by

Monde and the book study will be lead by Monde and
Renae. Needs to be read prior to our May 11th meeting.
This will be our resource (guide) as we move into PWMS.

Staff will be given a copy of the article Monde sent to us
and will be told a little about our middle school philosophy
at the next staff meeting.

5. How do we
honor/support staff as
they leave EJH and
Franklin?

Monde

Discussion

5 min.

Franklin plan is to use the last day 6/6 to say goodbye to

the 6th grade staff. At East we will have a short retirement
get-together. Honoring some staff that have been at East
for a while. Steve will work with Pam and the Sunshine
Committee on this.

6. What are some team

building opportunities to
unite staff this spring,
summer, fall etc.?

Steve

Discussion

10
min.

Should we organize a staff get together as the new school

year gets closer? A retreat-type of experience at the
beginning of August. Youth Frontiers could come in for a
day for 3-4 hours.
What do we do for staff that cant make this date and time?
Staff would be paid for their time to attend.

Youth Frontier retreats are 3 hours long, therefore;

could do something later in the day to unite people or the
next day. Space to be determined.
Have to find out from YF if they are available around this
time. Jessi will contact YF for dates and times they are
available.
Social events should be addressed by the Sunshine
Committee, Renae and Pam get together? Possible spring
and fall event that Sunshine Committee will organize. (

the lists are gathered. Renae and Jessi will put that
together.

9. What is the purpose of
staff meetings at PWMS?
How often do we have
them? When do they take
place?

Jessi

Discussion

30
min.

Franklin has gone away from staff meetings. Occasionally

talk about AVID. Only had a two meetings this year.
East has staff meetings on prep days. What about staff that
have after-school duties with coaching/advising?
Meetings should not be used for housekeeping. These need
to be meetings in which we learn/develop something. Not
just meeting to meet.
Think about this and speak with colleagues before our next
meeting.
If we start going to after-school, would this eliminate the
prep day PD?
Have to get these dates on a calendar asap so teachers can
plan accordingly.

10. What is the positive

PR going into PWMS?
What makes us unique?
What will PWMS offer?
How will we make our
mark and sustain positive
PR?

Steve

Discussion

Capitalize on the fact that we have a new building with the

opportunity to set high expectations for behavior from the
beginning.
Our kids are our advertising.what they come home
with... is who we are. Conversation about PBIS with
Steve.
Need to be more intentional with our PR. What is going on
in our building that can get the news in for stories?
KEYC/MFP. Possibly put together a PR committee? Jay is

willing to lead this.

11. What is the best
schedule for PWMS?
What things do we value
most that should drive the
schedule? What do we
love? What dont we love?
What to add/delete?
PWMS Draft Schedules

Steve

Discussion

Focused on the 6th grade schedule. Looking at how to
min.
make schedules work as some classes are quarter long,
some semester.
We talked about WIN time, supervision going to look
different - wont have a study hall. May have lunch duty,
hall duty, etc - similar to HS right now.
Study halls are mostly wasted time. Could we provide more
opportunities? Exploratory?
Reorganize team time to before school to open up the
schedule.

12. What information do

teachers need in order to
pack and purge? What
classroom storage will be
available at PWMS? Will
there be paid time?
Next Meeting: May 11,
2016
-SSSC?
How do we develop an
above the line culture at
PWMS that supports staff
in helping others succeed,
communicating you
matter, honors the absent,
and that sees the
problem, owns the
problem?
How do we set PLCs up
for success at PWMS?
How do we support those
teachers who would like
to use a standards-based
grading approach?

Steve

Discussion

5 min. Teachers will be paid for 8 hours at $11.00

Can we bring furniture from our current classrooms to
PWMS?
Need to provide teachers with the furniture/storage that
will be provided.

How do we best support

students in making the
transition to PWMS?
How do we best support
parents in making the
transition to PWMS? What
should fall open house
look like? What should
entrance conferences look
like?
Instead of having random
acts of family
engagement, how do we
use family engagement as
a core strategy that
schools develop and
support in order to
achieve our goals?
