RF interference cancellation is important when wideband RF transmitters and receivers are co-located
in close proximity. This is becoming increasingly common in modern RF communication installations.
The ICS repeater is used to protect one or more RF receivers from interference, caused by one or more
co-sited RF transmitters.
Advanced digital signal processing in the ICS Repeater removes leaked signals from service antenna
feeding back to link antenna. If not removed, the leaked signals cause interference which lowers
isolation between antennas. This in turns limits the gain of repeaters.
Figure 1: Application of ICS Repeater Using the Same Service and Link Frequency.
Typically, the gain needs to be 15-20 dB lower than isolation to prevent oscillation in the normal RF
Repeater. In an ICS Repeater the ICS module makes use of sophisticated algorithms to cancel feedback
signals up to 25 dB from Service to Link antennas. This results in a lower minimum required isolation
which translates to a smaller vertical separation between the Link and Service antennas.
Table 1 below compares the minimum required isolation and the vertical separation between antennas
when ICS function is turned ON/OFF. When the ICS function is turned off, the ICS Repeater operates just
like a normal RF repeater. When the ICS function is turned on, signals are processed digitally by the ICS
module.
The table clearly illustrates that when ICS is turned ON, the vertical separation of the Link and Service
antennas can be greatly reduced from 27 meters to 6.4 meters.

AnundaTech ICS Repeater consists of only 1 unit. It can replace optical repeaters where (1) fibre optic
cables are unavailable, and (2) fibre optic cables are too expensive to install / rent. The ICS Repeater
will enable operators to realize huge savings on CAPEX and OPEX by utilizing wireless links to provide
strong call signals. New coverage areas can be launched quickly, as there is no need to install fibre optic
cables.

Please follow the guidelines below on choosing an appropriate site for the ICS Repeater:
1) Distance between BTS and Repeater sites should be no more than 10 km.
2) Received signal strength from BTS site should be more than -57 dBm if maximum output
power is to be achieved. For example, the maximum output power and the maximum gain
are +43 dBm and 100 dB respectively. Therefore the minimum input power is -57 dBm
.
because the service signal will interfere with the link signal from BTS site. The target area
can be anywhere within the shaded area. See illustrated below:
BTS
Target Area
Repeater
5) Target area should be no more than 2.0 km away from the Repeater site.
Page 17 | 60
Interference Cancellation System Repeater (20 W) | Product Description & Users Manual Ver. 1.5
6) Height of link antenna should be at least 20.6 m if the distance between BTS and Repeater
sites is 5 km, as indicated by the first Fresnel zone radius, r:
The cross-section radius, r, of the first Fresnel zone can be calculated by the following
formula where
r = radius in metres
Therefore, if distance between BTS and Repeater sites is 5 km, and the frequency of
transmission is 880 MHz, the radius is:

In this chapter, the step by step procedures from a mechanical installation and an electrical
installation will be described in Section 5.1 and 5.2. After Section 5.1 and 5.2 are complete, the ICS
Repeater is ready for the Parameter Set up and the Commission. In Section 5.3 the installation of
OMT on the computer is presented and then followed by the Repeater Set up and the
Commissioning in Section 5.4.
The Repeater unit is installed at the area where coverage is required, usually outdoor on concrete
poles. Multiple service antennas can be used for each Repeater unit. In general, more than one
unit is not recommended to be used with a single BTS due to the sensitivity degradation issue!
5.1
Mechanical Installation
5.1.1 Basic Environmental Conditions
The repeaters are designed to operate outdoor in the tropical countries where typical climates
include sunshine, rain, thunder storms and lightning. The robust weather-proof cabinet that
housed the circuitry protects them from exposure to the humidity of the environment as well as of
the aforementioned climates.
These climate conditions may shorten the repeaters life cycle. Therefore, a preferable site for the
repeater is a well-ventilated room, or under a shade wherever possible.
Repeater unit should be installed under the shade.
Make sure there is enough air circulation around the cabinet to avoid
over-heating problems.
During installation or service to the repeater, DO NOT open the cabinet
door under these weather conditions:
Heavy rain
Thunder storm
Lightning
High humidity
High dust density in the air
Failure to do so will cause serious damage to the circuitry inside!

In this example, the measured received power, P RX is -46 dBm (from Step 2).
To run the ICS Repeater at its maximum output power (+43 dBm, see Anundas ICS Repeater
Specifications), the gain of ICS Repeater should therefore be set at 89 dB as calculated below:
But ICS Repeater has the capability to cancel 25 dB of feedback signals. Therefore the isolation of
an ICS Repeater should be:

After setting the UL and DL Attenuation, save the setting and read the parameters. In this
example, the DL Pin should be read at -46 dBm (=PRX) and DL Pout should be read at 43 dBm
as calculated in Step 3 (see Figure 24). If the values are mismatched (3 dB), please contact
Anunda Technical Support Team for assistance.
8.
Then RTWP values should be inspected by the operator to check if the RTWP level is
increased beyond the acceptable level. If it is higher than the acceptable level, the UL
Attenuation is needed to be increased until RTWP level is at its acceptable level. On the
other hand, the UL attenuation can be increased until RTWP level is still at its acceptable
level so that the possible high Uplink gain can be obtained. However, Uplink Attenuation
should not be set until less than Downlink Attenuation minus 5.
Recommendation
We recommend to use ICS ATT to adjust uplink gain to maintain noise in the uplink
path. However, to adjust downlink gain we recommend to use both input ATT and
ICS ATT to optimize downlink dynamic range.
If the DL input power becomes more than -47 dBm, It is recommend to use input
ATT to set DL the gain of repeater an external attenuator is needed at the link port.

9.
Plug in the battery backup cable to the socket (1x2 pin) as shown in Figure 25. This step is
very important to do as the last thing before the cabinet chassis is closed and left under the
full operation. Unless the step is missed, there will be no alarm status sending to the OMC
when no electricity.
Reminder: When the unit is stored unused, the socket should be left unplug to keep the
battery backup power.
