Question 1

a- Draw and explain whenever possible the PLC block diagram architect.

b- In PLC the main CPU is isolated physically from the input/output modules.
Draw and explain such isolation.

When a digital pulse passes through the light-emitting diode, a pulse of infrared radiation is
produced. This pulse is detected by the phototransistor and gives rise to a voltage in that circuit.
The gap between the light-emitting diode and the phototransistor gives electrical isolation but the
arrangement still allows for a digital pulse in one circuit to give rise to a digital pulse in another
circuit

Name Pressure regulator:

Name Name : 2/3 way valve:

e- Explain a method to hold a single acting cylinder

By using Piloted non-return valve with spring

As long as a pilot signal is applied to the non-return valve, compressed air flows to
and from the cylinder. When the pilot signal is reset, the non-return valve shuts off
the cylinder exhaust air, and cylinder motion is stopped.

fThe following figure has malfunction during operation.

Trace for the problem and explain it.

Apply the possible corrections to the circuit
Add the possible activation method to the valve

g- Different views of a pneumatic cylinder are shown below. It can be assumed

that the air pressure to extend and retract the cylinder is the same. Which of
the following statements about the relationship between pressure, force and
cross section are correct?

Mechatronics lab MCTR704

The piston force exerted by the cylinder as it extends is dependent upon

the air pressure, the piston diameter (cross section area) and the frictional
resistance of the sealing components.
The force to retract the cylinder is higher than the force to extend the
cylinder.
The force to retract or extend the cylinder is the same.
The force to extend the cylinder is higher than the force to retract the
cylinder.
The higher the diameter of the piston rod the higher the force to retract the
cylinder.

h- The figure shown demonstrates a work piece to be detected by sensor 3B.

The double acting cylinder is then extended. The cylinder position is
detected by the reed switches sensors 2B1 and 2B2.
Complete the circuit wiring to the PLC.
Complete the missing pneumatic symbols for 2V1, 2V2 and 2V3

i- Objects are transferred on a conveyor belt; the PLC receives high signals
as the objects passes under a series of 3 proximity sensors used to
identify the material type, as shown below.

Each material type activates these sensors in a pre-determined type, according

the table shown below.
The sorting assembly cannot distinguish between the object types according to
faults in the system design.
What are these faults?

Sensor S2
Sensor S3

Solution
The sensors allocation doesnt satisfies the object size, for example if the
object type is steel the three sensors cannot give the high signal at the same
time

A control panel will include the PLC and the controlling components such
as relays and contactor.
An electric motor will control the opening and closing of the sliding gated
via toothed wheel rotated on a toothed rail.
Optical sensors of type transmit/receive will be placed at the gate two
sides to indicate the car arrival from both sides.
To identify the car that will be allowed to pass two optical sensors of type
retro reflective will be placed in allocation at the middle of the door at both
sides; the sensor reflector will be installed on the car bottom side of its
bumper to reflect back the received optical array.
Audio and warning signal during the door opening and closing will be
placed on the door right side up position.
