Child of Rage. Dir. MarkLegg87. YouTube. YouTube, 18 Oct. 2011. Web. 20 Oct. 2016.
Summary: Video
The Thomas family adopted two small children, Beth and Jonathan. Before Beth was adopted,
she experienced sexual abuse and neglect until she was 19 months old by her birth father. Due to
her neglect, her and her brother developed extreme psychological issues and showed signs of
psychopathy. When evaluated by a psychiatrist, she showed little to no emotions when she
explained the abuse she went through and the abuse to inflicted on her brother and small animals.
She would poke her brother and their pets with small pins to stab them with. Beth also claimed
that she knew it was wrong, but it didnt matter. She also suffered from nightmares of someone
raping her. When evaluated, the therapists claimed that she had developed Reactive Attachment
Disorder which is a form of psychopathy and sociopathy. After she was diagnosed she
received treatment and was sent to a home to receive her treatment. Within a year, she made a
great amount of progress and was able to be around other children and animals.
Application to Research
This helps me develop my argument because it gives proof that it is possible to treat
psychopathic behaviors which will also allow me to narrow down what the most effective
treatment is.
Gerstenfeld, Phyllis B. "Serial Killers." Criminal Justice. Vol. 2. Pasadena, CA: Salem, 2006. N.
pag. Print.
Summary: Book
The section went in great detail on the history of serial killers and what defines a mass
murderer. It also states that the rate of serial killers has increased significantly from the mid1990s. Serial killers are often driven by numerous environmental factors in their life that makes
them want to kill. The majority are driven by the desire to physically or sexually dominate and
terrorize others. Most serial killers have Antisocial Personality Disorder but a lot of them are not
considered psychotic and some theorists believe some are natural born killers. These people
also suffer from mental illnesses such as depression and have experienced a lot of misfortune in
their lives. Still to this day, biologically, it is a mystery to why they have the urge to kill.
Application to Research
The information applies to my research because it strengthens my claim which states that serial
killers have mental problems that make them the way they are. This proves that their way of
thinking can be changed with help and medicine
Depressiond.org. "Sociopath Sociopathic Personality Disorder." D for Depression Depressive
Psychological Disorders. N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Nov. 2016.
Summary

Monitoring a childs behavior, reward systems, nurturing environments, and correcting behaviors
is crucial in early development. When these parent responsibilities are neglected, then sociopathy
is a natural consequence. Having a non-structured environment will cause these children to act
out and develop personality issues and makes it harder for these kids to fit in their society. This
article also discusses the different types of sociopaths. Aggressive, Dyssocial, Alienated, AND
Common sociopaths.
Application to Research
This information helps me in my research because it gives me knowledge on the different kinds
of sociopaths which will help me decipher how these people develop these disorders and what
environment is more likely to cause the person to develop the type of sociopathy. Knowing this
will also help me argue that some of these issues are direct causes from our society and will also
help me push for why more psychological treatments are needed.
"View Printable Version (pdf)." FBI. FBI, 30 Nov. 2009. Web. 13 Oct. 2016.
Summary: PDF
This text is written by the FBI who deal with sociopaths and serial murderers on a daily basis.
This source gives great information on what goes on in a sociopaths mind, clarifies any common
wrong assumptions. It also says that the reason why they act the way they do is a direct result of
their parents and how the child was brought up. Most children who have gone through abuse and
traumatic events and become serial murderers are sexually driven and experienced violence
during their early development age. Psychopathy is a personality disorder which include
behaviors such as, manipulation, charm, lack of remorse, violence towards others, and many
other similar aspects.
Application to Research
This gives me more of a base to define a psychopaths and serial murderers. This article also
strengthens my argument because the article claims that most of these people are a direct result
of their parents which means at some point in their life they were normal and did not enjoy
causing pain to others and behavior like this is a direct result of abuse
By M.E. Thomas, Published on May 7, 2013 - Last Reviewed on June 9, 2016. "Confessions of a
Sociopath." Psychology Today. Sussex Publishers, 7 May 2013. Web. 27 Oct. 2016
Summary: Book
The Article is direct quotes from actual sociopaths describing their mind sets and their
experiences with others. One grew up in a normal household and has no explanation for the dark
thoughts in their head, others experienced abuse during their development years, and some just
can't feel emotions and remorse for others. A lot of them pushed people away who tried to show
affection towards them or physical affection. The only physical contact they craved was violent.
The article also provided statistics on how many sociopaths are incarcerated. Approximately 20
percent of prisoners are sociopaths and the majority of sociopaths are living normal lives trying
to fit in society
Application to Research

This is beneficial information for my research because it gives me a perspective on how

sociopaths feel and provides me a way to reason with them and understand their cognitive setup.
Serial Killers, Part 8: New Research Aims to Help Investigators Solve Cases."FBI. FBI, 30 Nov.
2013. Web. 06 Oct. 2016
Summary: Website
The FBI has spent the last eight years collecting research and data to help them solve serial
murders. Bob Morton, a retired FBI agent believes that statistics are a big factor when it comes
to serial crimes. In the past, Morton claimed, research tended to focus on known offenders and
what led them to become serial murderers. That information, while useful, provided little help
to investigators trying to apprehend an unknown offender in an active, unsolved case. Which
means that researchers now believes that trying to figure out what led someone to become a
serial killer isnt as useful in the case. Now, research is pointing to where the bodies are
discovered. The article also stated how serial murders are rare in the United States.
Application to Research
Informs me on the views of the justice system. This is helpful because it allows me to depict the
holes in their statements and help me better my argument to make it as accurate as possible.
Feature, Kara Mayer RobinsonWebMD. "What's the Difference Between a Sociopath and a
Psychopath?" WebMD. WebMD, n.d. Web. 31 Oct. 2016.
Summary: Website
The main difference between a psychopath and a sociopath is whether or not they have a
conscience. A psychopath doesnt have a conscience but a sociopath usually has a conscience
but it is very mute. A sociopath will know that the behavior is wrong, and might feel some
remorse, but that wont stop the behavior. A psychopath does not have morals and will feel no
remorse after committing a crime. Both lack an appropriate amount of empathy but psychopaths
have a less regard for others. Recent research shows that psychopaths have physical differences
in their brain that disables them from identifying others distress
Application to Research
Points out the differences between sociopaths and knowing that one doesnt have a conscious
will further my argument that states these people suffer from neglect of cognitive milestones.

Christopher Peterson Ph.D. "Psychology Today." Psychopathy. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Oct. 2016.
Summary: Interview of a psychologist
Dr. Hare and his team developed the Psychopathy Check List Revised (PCL-R) It provides an
assessment that measures the degree of psychopathy that an individual has. This assessment
attempts to measure personality traits and socially deviant behaviors That fall into four
categories: interpersonal, affective, lifestyle and antisocial. This helps law officials more aid in
identifying psychopaths and understand their personality traits.
Application to Research
This is useful information because it lists new diagnostics that psychologists are currently
researching to improve evaluations of sociopaths.
Reporters, Telegraph. "One in 100 Children Are Psychopaths, Experts Believe." The Telegraph.
Telegraph Media Group, n.d. Web. 01 Dec. 2016
Summary

Discusses sociopathic children and their behaviors. Psychologists have come up with a sub
group called callous-unemotional to describe these children. It was also stated that bad parenting
is not a primary factor with dealing with these children. A key factor in this issue is genetics.
This means that people who have a genetic tie to this mental disorder makes these children more
susceptible to developing an antisocial disorder. 25-50 percent of children who have conduct
issues fall into the callous-unemotional category. It was also stated that kids who had bad parents
were more anti-social but psychopathic traits were more genetic.
Application to Research
Gives me statistics on children who have antisocial behaviors and how those behaviors correlate
with bad parenting. This is useful to my research because it strengthens my argument by proving
sociopathic behaviors are a direct cause to abuse or a traumatic event that has occurred in an
individuals life. Therefore, children who have been through traumatic events during their early
development are more susceptible to developing a personality disorder.

Christopher Peterson Ph.D. "Psychology Today." Psychopathy. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Oct. 2016
Summary: Website
Discusses current research that claims these people have different structures in their brain. This
article also defines what psychopathy is and states how these people manipulate others and have
no sort of conscious.
Application to Research
This strengthens my argument, serial killers have mental health issues that disable them from
fitting into society

Summary:Website
According to to Dr. Robert Hare and Paul Babiak, corporate executives are almost three and a
half times more likely to be psychopathic than other members of the public. Positions of power
attract a mass number of people with pathological signs or symptoms. My most memorable
encounter with a corporate psychopath occurred when I was CEO of a consulting firm. We had a
contract to operate several programs at a military base, and I hired Mr. Swindall as our site
manager. I recall having an uneasy feeling during his interview that I couldnt express in words.
He was too immaculately dressed, too suave, too glib, and just too good to be true. But no one
else was as qualified. Since I had no specific reason to reject him, I hired him. The man Mr.
Swindall did not cooperate with the persons firm and had difficulty following rules that
everyone else could follow.
Application to Research
This correlates to my research because it claims that psychopaths can not conform to societies
which means that they need to be isolated from others and can not live a normal life. This helps
me build an argument that these people need more assistance in their lives to try and live a
normal life.
Only Sociopaths Intentionally Hurt Animals: A Professional View." PETA Prime. N.p., 06 Apr.
2010. Web. 22 Dec. 2016
Summary
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, (DSM) is a resource psychiatrics use
to diagnose people who have psychological disorders. In this article, it discusses how sociopaths
abused animals at a young age and escalated to people later on. Such as, Ted Bundy, Jeffrey

Dahmer. The sociopathic behavior first develops as misconduct at a young age and then into an
anti personality disorder. A very common symptom is animal abuse. Inforcing pain on animals
gives the sociopath a rush and because they cant sympathize with the animal, they see nothing
wrong in their behavior.
Application to Research
This is useful in my research process because it explains the correlation between sociopaths and
animals. This is helpful because it gives me a break down on sociopathic behavior throughout
their lives and proves that these people show symptoms early in life. This means that they
gradually become a problem with society, but if they were given treatment throughout their life,
it would reduce the chances of them harming others.

these people lack important cognitive milestones. This is useful because it proves that
psychopaths have a severe mental disorder that causes them to lash out the way they do.
Improving life for these people would benefit our society greatly and improve safety for our
society as well.

Summary
Dr. Hare and his team of psychology experts developed the Psychopathy Check-List Revised

such as murder or stealing. These behaviors fall into four categories: interpersonal, affective,
lifestyle and antisocial. This helps law officials more aid in identifying psychopaths and

law enforcement officers to receive accurate information from them unless, the interviewer has
been trained for questioning.
Application to Research
This is useful information because it lists new diagnostics that psychologists are currently
researching to improve evaluations of sociopaths. It also is helpful because understanding theses
personality and behavioral traits will allow law officials to design interviewing strategies that are
more likely to be effective when dealing with psychopaths and allow interview sessions with
them to be more effective.

The Natural History of Anti Personality Disorder.", PDF ed. Originally published in
CanJPsychiatry, vol. 60, no. 7, July 2015.
Summary: PDF
This PDF file discusses the history of Anti Personality Disorder (ASPD). ASPD is clairvoyant to
poor treatment response. ASPD generally begins around eight years old. It is commonly

diagnosed as conduct disorder at and then later diagnosed as ASPD at age of 18, if antisocial
behaviors have progressed. Earlier symptoms are correlated with a poorer development.
Additional factors include marriage, employment, early imprisonment, and small amounts of
socialization. ASPD is also associated with mental health/addictive disorders, such as, major
depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, gambling
disorder, and sexual disorders. People with ASPD are at risk for traumatic injuries, accidents,
suicide attempts, and hepatitis C infections. People with ASPD use an inconsistent quantity of
medical and mental health services.
Application to Research
General history and risk factors are crucial to my research process because knowing the specific
environmental factors that can increase the likelihood or are a direct cause of ASPD can validate
my argument and cause my readers to gain sympathy to ASPD patients. Therefore, they will
have a better understanding of why they wont seek treatment and what causes someone to
develop ASPD.

Summary: Website
The author is a psychologist that gives an overall generalization of a sociopath. It begins by
discussing the environmental and biological reasoning for sociopathy. This article brings
questions that are currently big debating topics that psychologists discuss currently today such
as, If, as the research suggests, sociopaths are born with a predisposition to sociopathy, it means
that they don't have total control over their behavior
Application to Research
This information seems to be very beneficial and it provides background knowledge on
sociopaths and explains how they feel. This can be used to support and back up my research
question/topic that questions if sociopaths should be given more medical attention.

Summary: Website

This website listed the treatments that are used to currently treat sociopaths. Psychotherapy is
used to focus on changing behavior and to develop skills that will help them be useful in society.
Because sociopaths lack emotions They tend to participate in criminal acts for personal gain to
help them feel better about themselves. Psychotherapy treatment focuses on teaching behaviors
that are helpful to others by using a combination of behavior therapy and cognitive-behavior
therapy. Some medications are used as well to treat depression or anxiety as well which will help
stabilize their mood. Also, anger management is an option as well because many of them have a
lot of rage inside of them and finding a way to channel that rage is supposedly helpful to them
because they are less likely to act out.
Application to Research
