Introduction

Effects of Facebook on Physical-Social Connectedness.

Since the beginning of time, people have created ways to communicate, evolving from primitive
language and markings to more recent technologies including telephones and computers. Faceto-face interaction allows a person to respond in conversation by utilizing verbal and non-verbal
clues they receive during the conversation. Todays systems of communication allow people to
interact with each other in settings that are not face-to-face. Facebook have tried to re-create
face-to-face interactions on the web by allowing people to interact publically or privately. Many
people use facebook as a way to stay in contact, while others use the medium as a way to
develop new connections. A benefit of facebook is that they allow people to develop or maintain
relationships with individuals who may not be close to themselves geographically. When it
comes to location, facebook allow families, couples, and friends to stay connected using a simple
click of a button. (Farrugia, 2013) Facebook, were created for the sole purpose of helping
individuals communicate. There are many other reasons that these technologies are used, but
communication is still the number one. Many people use these networks to talk to their friends in
other cities, states, or even other countries. Facebook users normally create pages that represent
them in some way. They post pictures of themselves and their friends. Their friends comment on
these photos. This concept seems simple enough, but its use is very different depending on the
age of the user. Adults are known to be more mature about what they post and how they interact
online. It is more likely that adults would, Use their profile pictures as a way of casually
showing themselves, their family, or possibly a recent trip they took .This is a reasonable way
of representing yourself online. Teenagers, however, use this new technology in a way that could
be dangerous. In this stage of their lives, they care more about their need to impress their peers
than mature reasoning. (Roseburg, 2013) We chose to do this research study because we think
attention must be placed on high school students and the relationship between facebook
involvement and their physical-social connectedness. Almost all of the senior students has a
Facebook account. The purpose of this thesis is to explore how Facebook use is beneficial to the
senior students or just an interruption to the personal communication.
