Dear Shamus Toomey, Managing Editor
This letter is in response to the DNA Info Chicago article, Developer Buys Giant 8-Acre Pilsen Site
For Housing; Ald. Promises A Fight by Stephanie Lulay (published 1-26-17).
If this is true, we are extremely perturbed by the secret negotiations that have taken place
between the Jesuit Providence of the Midwest and Noah Gottlieb, NY Developer and Principal
at Property Markets Group or Trump Junior as he is known in some community circles.
We applaud Alderman Solis for rezoning this site to ensure that any developer with interest in
this parcel, must produce at least 21% affordable housing, preserve the legacy, and character of
the community, and create more green space in accordance with the Pilsen Land Use
Committee criteria.
At a time when a New York developer has taken over the White House, creating fear in
immigrant communities, the last thing Pilsen needs is for Trump Junior to further jeopardize
Pilsens strong immigrant integrity by displacing working immigrant families.
The undersigned organizations are equally disturbed that for the past three years the Jesuit
Providence of the Midwest has refused to listen to the community and never took into
consideration the neighborhood concerns and its commitment to balanced development at 18th
and Peoria.
It is insulting that the stakeholders/residents who have built a healthier Pilsen community have
to find out through the media that a deal has been reached. We respect and agree with
Alderman Solis in his support of affordable housing and when he stated . . . I want to make
sure that we do something exceptional there, (and) not just allow a developer to build a bunch
of units there, make money and leave.
We welcome development, but not at the expense of the displacement of residents. Our
contributions as Mexican/Latino immigrants who followed the legacy of other immigrants that
founded this community must be respected.
