UNIT-I
Q[1]: (A) What is meant by industrial pollution? Explain the effects of industrial waste discharge on
streams.
(B) What are the factors affecting self purification capacity of stream?
(C) Discuss the impact of industrial waste water on sewers and municipal sewage treatment plants.
(D) What is meant by self purification of river? Discuss the factors that affect the DO sag in river. With
the help of sketch, explain the oxygen sag curve. Discuss a model for analysis of DO sag.

What do you mean by effluent standards and stream standards? Explain the requirement of these
standards, in industrial waste treatment. What is the significance of Bio-assay tests?

The traffic density for a highway is 1200 vehicles/hr and the average vehicle speed is 80 km/hr. The
average carbon monoxide emission per vehicle is 40 g/s. Estimate the carbon monoxide concentration
100 m, 250 m, 500 m and 1000 m downwind of the highway if the wind speed normal to the highway is 2
m/s. Assume neutral conditions.
