Trump: I'll Cut Drug Company Taxes,
Regulations
In a meeting Tuesday with drug company executives, U.S. President
Donald Trump said he would cut their taxes and regulations in order to
lower drug prices and create jobs.
Attendees included executives from Celgene, Merck, Johnson & John-
son and Amgen, the Associated Press reported.
It can take as long as 15 years and millions of dollars to get a new drug
approved in the U.S., according to Trump. He said the current 9,000
pages of regulations should be slashed to 100.
Also, Trump said patients with terminal illnesses should be allowed to
try treatments that are not fully approved, the AP reported.
Trump's tone at the meeting was far different than his first press confer-
ence as president, when he said drug companies had been "getting away
with murder" because the federal government did not make them com-
pete for its business.
After the meeting, Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier told reporters that the
session was "very constructive" and that Trump was "very much fo-
cused" on finding ways to give patients more choices, the AP reported.

Walton Co.woman suspected of
starting three morning fires
Rebecca Rushing Barker was being held at the
Walton County Jail Tuesday on a burglary charge
while the State Fire Marshal's Office investigates her
suspected involvement in three Tuesday morning
arson fires.
The Walton County Sheriff's Office and Walton
County Fire Rescue were called out at 5 a.m.,
Tuesday to the scene of a "fully involved car fire" at
a rural home at 3792 State Highway 81, a Sheriff's
Office news release said.
While fire fighters fought to contain the car fire, a
building "in close proximity to the vehicle" also went
up in flames, the release said. Walton County
Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Corey Dobridnia said
the second structure was a trailer "set back in the
woods."
Dobridnia confirmed that the vehicle fire occurred at
Barker's residence. It was unclear whether the trailer
was on Barker's property or not.Deputies arriving at
the second call reported seeing someone "running
through the gate behind the home into the woods,"
the report said. Deploying Sheriff's Office K9 Units
as well as tracking dogs from the nearby state
penitentiary, officers were able to track down and
apprehend Barker, the release said. She was getting
into the vehicle of a passerby when she was caught.
Barker has been detained on the burglary to a
conveyance charge "for attempting to enter (a)
victim's car uninvited," the release said.
The arson investigation is still ongoing, according to
the release. Anyone with information is asked to call
the Walton County Sheriff's at (850)-892-8111.

DeFuniak Springs City Manager
Tillman Mears unexpectedly
submitted his resignation Monday
night at a special meeting of the
City Council.
A stunned chamber immediately
expressed their disappointment and
encouraged him to reconsider.
Councilman Kermit Wright tried
repeatedly to get Mears to offer an explanation.
"I feel there have been some personal issues
between myself and Councilman Carpenter," said
Mears. "There are none!," Carpenter shot back.
From there, sharp words and accusations were
exchanged between the two.
Numerous city residents came forward expressing
their shock and disappointment in the Council for
allowing things to deteriorate to the point that
Mears felt he had to resign.
Councilman Mac Carpenter urged the council to
proceed with advertising and finding a permanent
manager. However, the majority of the council was
satisfied with Mears and supported him for the
position. City policy demands a unanimous vote
from the council for the position and Mr. Carpenter usually involves a combination of non-surgical

Arthritis and aging
They say that growing old is not for sissies. That
may be true. Aging can and does bring with it a
thousand small indignities, from more aches and pains
to reduced stamina, flexibility and mobility. Thumb
arthritis is common with aging, and occurs when
cartilage wears away from the ends of the bones that
form the thumb joint also known as the
carpometacarpal (CMC) joint.
According to researchers at Mayo Clinic, thumb
arthritis can cause severe pain, swelling, decreased
strength and range of motion. That makes it difficult
to do simple tasks, such as turning doorknobs and
opening jars. Treatment generally involves a
combination of medication and splints. Severe thumb
arthritis might require surgery.
Pain is the first and most common symptom and can
occur at the base of the thumb whenever the hand
attempts to grip, grasp or pinch an object, or use the
thumb to apply force. Other signs and symptoms
might include swelling, stiffness and tenderness at the
base of the thumb, as well as decreased strength and
range of motion.
In a normal thumb joint, cartilage covers the ends of
the bones acting as a cushion and allowing the
bones to glide smoothly against each other. With
thumb arthritis, the cartilage that covers the ends of
the bones deteriorates, and its smooth surface
roughens. The bones then rub against each other,
resulting in friction and joint damage.
In the early stages of thumb arthritis, treatment
therapies. If thumb arthritis is severe, surgery might
be necessary.
A splint can support the joint and limit the
movement of the thumb and wrist, which will
decrease pain and encourage proper positioning of the
joint while completing normal tasks.
To relieve pain, your physician might recommend
over-the counter pain relievers or prescription pain
relievers. However, if pain relievers and a splint aren't
effective, a physician might recommend injecting
corticosteroid into your thumb joint. Corticosteroid
injections can offer pain relief and reduce
inflammation.
If those treatments do not work, a physician might
help regain hand strength and movement.
In the meantime, consider purchasing adaptive
levers. For pain, apply ice for five to 15 minutes
several times a day to help relieve painful swelling.

Coastal counties send warning to spring
breakers
Spring break is quickly approaching and local authorities are
preparing this week for the vacationers with a word of
warning.
It maybe a little cold out right now, but hotels and the sheriff's
office are preparing for the beginning of the spring break
season, which starts even earlier this year.
Hotels and resorts say the season is longer this year, about
eight weeks in total.
Crackdowns in traditional destinations for college-age kids
have the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) on alert.
"There is a possibility that they could move over, we will do
like we did last year and basically have additional manning in
certain areas to combat any problems that arise." He believes
only a small group are troublemakers.
"The sheriff wants people to be safe while they are here."
"We want them to enjoy themselves while they are here, but
we also want them to obey the law."
OCSO sent out an open letter to many college and high school
campuses warning them to follow the rules.
Hotel manager Joe Guidry operates what he calls a family-
friendly environment. It's not an easy place to throw a
booze-soaked party for college or high school kids.
Age minimums to rent a condo or hotel keep most of the kids
out. To rent a condo, you have to be 25 and for a hotel room
you must be 21.
"We don't get the college crazy spring breaker thing," No
problem for his or any other hotel on Okaloosa Island's
bottom line.
"We don't market to it. I don't go to colleges and say 'come to
the Ramada.' That's not a place I market to, so I'm not losing
out on anything that I am not marketing to," Guidry said.
Bay County will have a ban on alcohol on the beach starting
March 1st.

Tri-County Headstart Visits
Walton County Landfill
On Wednesday, January 25th, a class of 20 children
from the Westville Tri-County Head Start program
visited the Walton County Landfill to learn about
recycling and garbage trucks.
They were chaperoned by teachers Dede Finch,
Michelle Jackson, and Sharon Smith.
County Landfill employees gave them a tour of the
Landfill and showed them what happens to their
garbage after it is collected from their homes. The
children watched the Beast Chipper turn trees and
brush into mulch, the 35-ton Caterpillar Garbage
Compactor with big steel wheels crushing debris
and watched the operation of other landfill heavy
equipment. During their visit, they took the
opportunity to ask lots of questions about recycling
and where the trucks take the garbage.
Additionally, the City of DeFuniak set up a modern
garbage truck, called a two man truck, that can pick
up and dump 4 cans at one time. The city solid
waste employees, Scott Simmons and Jeff Johnson,
demonstrated the truck and let the kids each have a
turn pulling the dump lever.
At the conclusion of the tour, each child was
given a goody bag with a recycling theme
containing a coloring book, crayons, a yo-yo,
pencils and a Frisbee.
The visit was hosted by Walton County Landfill
Manager Jeff Massey and Assistant Manager Billy
McKee.
Also, the guys from the City of DeFuniak were
Scott Simmons and Jeff Johnson. We appreciate
very much their participation and interaction with
the kids. The truck was a big hit.
South Dakota's transgender
locker room bill withdrawn
The abrupt announcement that it would be pulled
was surprising to foes, who said they hoped the
issue had been laid to rest. Jessie Lamphere, an 18-
year-old transgender high school student from
Sturgis, said he was relieved. "I just want them to
know that transgender boys are boys, and trans-
gender girls are girls, and that's just who we are,"
Lamphere said. "We all want privacy and safety in
locker rooms, and we're not in there to harm
anyone. We're just in there to get dressed and get
out."
Bartscher said the measure may live on in further
legislation, or at the ballot box, "but this issue is not
going to go away."

Trump was right to fire acting
Attorney General Yates for
breaching her duty
Sally Yates deserved to get canned. Now, the bar
association should consider yanking her license to
practice law.
In defying President Trumps executive order on
immigration, the Acting Attorney General flouted the
law and violated ethics that govern lawyers.
It is not the prerogative of the Attorney General to
decide what laws are constitutional. That is the job of
the courts. As the chief law enforcement officer,
she does not get to pick and choose which laws to
enforce and which ones to ignore. She is duty-bound
to defend and enforce all laws, including presidential
executive orders.
If an Attorney General disagrees with an executive
order, her ethical obligation under the code of
Professional Responsibility is to communicate that to
the president. If it cannot be resolved to her
satisfaction, she has two choices: enforce the order or
resign her position. This is plainly set forth in
sections 1.13 and 1.16 of the Rules of Professional
Conduct for the District of Columbia.
Yates did neither. Instead, she violated legal ethics
by actively undermining the President and issuing
her own order countermanding the President. She has
no such authority. What would happen if other
cabinet secretaries or federal officials committed the
same acts as Yates? The result would be chaos and
anarchy. The rule of law would vanish.
President Trump had ample justification for firing
Yates. She committed an egregious violation of
ethical standards and a serious breach of her duties.
Yates is not a constitutional law expert. Her career
has been in prosecutions. But within the Department
of Justice, there are experts on constitutional
law. Some of them are in the Office of Legal Counsel
at the DOJ. They reviewed the presidents executive
order and gave it their approval as to form and
legality. Yates deliberately chose to ignore their
sound reasoning. It is clear that Yates decision was
political, not legal. How do we know? Look at what
she wrote in her memorandum ordering attorneys not
to defend the presidents executive order in legal
challenges. She questioned whether the policy was
wise or just. That is a political judgment.
She fundamentally misunderstands her job and her
duties. Yates told the Senate Judiciary Committee,
I believe the attorney general or deputy attorney
general has an obligation to follow the law and the
Constitution, and to give their independent legal
advice to the president.
Yates did none of that. She never bothered to advise
the president about her misgivings. Nor did she
follow the law.
Upholding the Constitution does not mean
interpreting the Constitution in your own way. It
means upholding the rules of law and the system of
government established by the Constitution.
Congress will enact laws, the executive branch will
enforce those laws, and the judiciary will interpret
those laws. As Acting Attorney General, Yates chose
to abdicate the duties of her office in the executive
branch and assume the duties vested solely in the
judicial branch. In so doing, she failed to uphold her
sworn oath to well and faithfully discharge the du-
ties of the office. She undermined the publics trust.

County Road 30A Resurfacing Project
C.W. Roberts will begin construction activities for asphalt
milling, resurfacing and restriping approximately 2.2 miles of
CR 30A from CR 393 to CR 83.
Work will not be conducted during the week of January 16th,
but will resume beginning on the 23rd.
This project is scheduled to begin mid-January and is
anticipated to be completed within 30 calendar days. During
this construction period the road will remain open to traffic;
however the public may encounter slight delays and may
encounter lane restrictions. Motorist and Pedestrians are
encouraged to use caution while traveling in this area.
All planned construction activities are weather dependent and
may be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather. For

flipping off of a light switch, says a scientist, explaining a new
study that shows genes in the body remain alive for about two
days after the heart stops. RNAwhich genes use to communi-

'dead' when an organism dies. The activated genes were associ-
ated with fetal development, stress, immunity, inflammation,
