Chapter I

Introduction

Background of the study

According to Michael Tanner, director of health and welfare studies

at the Cato Institute. Most twenty year olds with the determination to

succeed should be or are in college furthering their education. Today

most of those twenty year olds are pregnant, putting their college life on

hold.
Teenage pregnancy is a serious issue that may seriously impact the

future of a young woman. Teen pregnancy will be a challenge as teens

typically lack skills needed to handle a pregnancy and motherhood.

Patience, maturity, and ability to handle stress are required by pregnant

mothers of all ages. A teen pregnancy may also impact the baby.

There are health risks for the body and children born from teenage

mothers, they are more likely to suffer health, social, and emotional

problems than children born to older mothers. Also, women who became

pregnant during their teens are at risk for complications, such as

premature labor and other consequences. Most women encounter early

pregnancy because when theyre in a relationship, they consider

themselves in love, which leads them to having fantasies of being

together forever with their significant partner, and eventually fall into

the enchantment of having sex without a contraceptive. Getting pregnant

at a young age is hard and there is no reason you cant wait until you are

older.

Statement of the problem

Specifically, the following problems were answered in the study.

1. What are the causes of teenage pregnancy?

2. What are the effects of teenage pregnancy?

3. What are the most effective ways to reduce teenage pregnancy?

Scope and Delimitations

This study covers the following: the prevention of teenage

pregnancy, the risk factors of teenage pregnancy, the study does not

cover the health risk of the born baby.

Significance of the Study

The findings of this study which will highlight the prevention and

the risk factors of teenage pregnancy would be beneficial to the following:

Family. Finding would help strengthen the family in terms of their

relationship to each other.

Parents. This study would be very significant as it provides information

conduct, and their totality as an individual.

Researchers. This study will profit students most appropriately women by

widening their awareness regarding prevention and risk factors of

teenage pregnancy and will help the students on how to provide

appropriately pregnancy teaching.

Future Researchers. This study also gives them the opportunity to gather

information necessary for them to continue prevent teenage pregnancy.

This will also serve as a reference on basis for other studies related to

Teenage Pregnancy: Consider the options. Understand the risks

Definition of terms

Teenage Pregnancy. This is a serious issue that may seriously impact the

future of a young woman.

Teenager/Adolescence. The period of life between puberty and maturity.

Pregnancy. It is the condition of being pregnant or the period of time

during which a female is pregnant.

Chapter II
Presentation, Discussion and Analysis

I. Cause of teenage pregnancy

Teenage pregnancy has become a growing concern and therefore to

look into the various causes of teenage pregnancy has become very

important in order to deal with the issue carefully. During adolescence,

teenagers often feel pressure to make friends and fit in with their peers.

According to The Kaiser Family Foundation more than 29 percent of

pregnant teens reported that they felt pressured to have sex, and 33

percent of pregnant teens stated that they felt that they were not ready

for a sexual relationship, but proceeded anyway because they feared

ridicule or rejection. Teen girls are more likely to get pregnant if they have

limited or no guidance from their parents. Many parents have busy lives

that prevent them from providing the guidance and support that their

young teenagers need to make good decisions on issues such as sex,

according to the website Parent Dish. Teenagers who are uneducated

about sex are more likely to have an unintended pregnancy. Some teens

do not fully understand the biological and emotional aspects associated

with having sex, according to DailyRecord.co.uk. Sexual abuse of teenage

girls is also one of the most disgraceful causes of teenage pregnancy.

II. Effects of Teenage Pregnancy

Teenagers are at a vulnerable stage of life. Their eagerness and

curiosity may lead them straight into lifetime problems. A teenager may

suffer an emotional crisis if she becomes pregnant and does not want the

baby. This may lead to attempting to self-abort the baby or a suicide

attempt. Education may be put on hold so she would decide to leave high

school. Others who were planning to attend college in the future may put

off that experience after becoming pregnant. They may decide to focus on

the baby or getting married rather than pursuing further education. The

teen may fall into a depression while trying to handle the emotions a

pregnancy creates and all of the possibly negative feedback about the

pregnancy from friends and family. Once their baby is born, teenagers

may not be willing or able to give it the undivided attention it needs. A

teen may not be an adequate mother because she is overwhelmed by the

constant needs of the baby. She may grow annoyed at the lack of freedom

to interact with her peer group due to the baby.

III. Precautions of Teenage Pregnancy

There are lots of ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy like Don't

give in to peer pressure many teenagers can feel left behind when their
friends start to have boyfriends, or start having sex. Those who have

started to do these things early can often talk about it enough to make

others feel left out. However, if you do stand your ground and wait until

you know you are ready. This means you'll have waited for the right

person and the right time. Learn to say NO, situate for your right of

protecting yourself from unwanted pregnancy. If anything, doing so will

only earn you respect. The only way you can avoid pregnancy completely

is by avoiding any physical contact. Awareness of teenage pregnancy,

teens should taught what sex education is, it will be beneficial if they

expanded their knowledge about teenage pregnancy by knowing the legal

consequences of teen pregnancy, such as that of child support, custody

issues, etc, that may help avoid teenage pregnancy even more. Open

communication, Teenagers must not hesitate to talk about any sex

related issues with their parents. Teenagers can talk to their parents

about proper protection while having sex. The parents must also be

willing to take time out to talk to their children about sex and educate

them better to avoid any risk of teenage pregnancy.
