Not My President

Donald Trump being inaugurated only a mere three weeks ago does warrant me, a U.S.

citizen, to give him a chance. However, its becoming increasingly difficult to be open-minded

when the new president is doing the opposite. Trumps desire to appoint a Secretary of

Education that has little experience in her new field does not sit very well with me. His decision

to ban mostly Muslim immigrants and refugees was also something that I vehemently disagree

with. Although its only temporary, who knows where Trump will go with his newfound power. I

hope that Donald Trump can calm down somewhat and quit implementing executive orders that

affect so many people negatively.

One of the things that has bothered me the most is Donald Trumps picks for his cabinet. I

dont agree whatsoever about Trumps pick for Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos. As The

New York Times stated it, For many educators, Ms. DeVoss support for charter schools and

vouchers reflected a deep disconnect from public schools. Neither Ms. DeVos nor any of her

children attended a public school. With that being said, she has no experience with public

schools, which a majority of American children attend. However, she has donated millions of

dollars to the GOP and Donald Trumps Presidential campaign. If donating millions to the

Republican Party is all it takes to become a top advisor to the President of the United States,

politics seems to be less about governing the country and more about money. Not to mention that

that money doesnt seem to be helping with Trumps popularity among Americans.

In the results of a recent survey, as presented by The Hill, Fifty-one percent reject the

controversial 90-day freeze [on immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries]. In addition

to that, Sixty percent oppose [120-day pause on general refugee admissions] (Hensch). With so

many people disagreeing on this topic, I do not understand why Mr. Trump continues to insist

that the ban is going very well when it has not. Despite the nationwide opposition to this ban, the

ban also gives our country a bad name on a global stage. The refusal to take in refugees while

other countries are in crises makes it look as if the US is in a crisis itself--or that Americans are

intolerant of other cultures. In addition to giving the US a bad look, Trump and his

administration seem to not know exactly what they are doing.

Donald Trump has campaigned for a while on the idea that he can single-handedly

dismantle the Affordable Care Act, or order the construction of a wall on the US-Mexico border.

However, he cannot do that. President Trump cannot do what he actually wants (repeal and

replace the ACA) without congressional action (Carter). Although the Republican Party holds

the majority in the Senate and House of Representatives, the situation is not as easy at it looks.

The Presidents support from lawmakers has been a little flimsy, not many congressmen and

congresswomen being willing to work with such an inexperienced politician and Donald Trump.

Not to mention that Trump doesnt exactly have a track record for being loyal to others--unless

they do something in return. For someone with such an apparent lack of understanding for how

government works, Donald Trump has gotten pretty far up the ladder.

For becoming the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump has shown a lack of

understanding for how government works and how he is supposed to run it. Not to mention his

ban on Muslim immigrants and refugees has also given the United States an even worse

reputation on a global stage. With this and his controversial picks for his cabinet, the Trump

administration worries me deeply. For this country to improve in any way possible over the

course of the next four years, our new Commander-in-Chief needs to stop worrying so much

about news outlets being fake and actually try to run a country that is more diverse than he

recognizes.
