As per rules, the upper limit of foreign direct investment
p e r mi t t e d i n t h i s s e c t o r i s 2 6 p e r c e n t . H o w e v e r, t h i s h a s t o b e
d o n e t hr o u g h t h e a u t o ma t i c route and the investor needs a license
from Insurance Regulatory a n d D e v e l o p m e n t Au t h o r i t y ( I R D A) .

A t p r e s e n t t h er e a r e 2 2 l i f e i n s u r e r s i n I n d i a . Th e I R D A h a s
r e c e n t l y t a k e n a w ay t h e t a r i ffs o f t h e i n t er e s t r a t e s a n d t h i s h a s
p r o v i d e d i n s u r e r s g r e a t e r i n d e p e n d e n c e w h e n i t c o me s t o d e c i d i n g
t h e pr i c e o f t h e i r i n s u r a n c e p o l i c i e s . Th e i n s u r a n c e i n d u s t r y h a s

Yet a n o t h e r i m p o r t a n t f a c t o r a ffe c t i n g t h i s s e c t o r h a s b e e n t h e
recent financial meltdown.

India insurance industry growth in last few y e ar s

The life insurance companies have performed the best when it


c o m e s t o g r o w t h w i t h a n i n c r e a s e o f a l m o s t 7 0 % i n n e w pr e m i u m
that has been collected in the initial 5 months of 2012.

A s p e r I R D A d a t a , i n Apr i l - A u g u s t 2 0 1 0 t h e i n s u r a n c e c o mp a n i e s
e a r n e d $ 11. 7 3 b i l l i o n i n n e w pr e m i u m - i n t h e c or r e s p o n d i n g
p e r i o d i n t h e p r e v i o u s y e ar t h e a m o u n t s t o o d a t 6 . 9 b i l l i o n
dollars.

L I C , a s t a t e h e l d i n s u r e r, h a d b e e n t h e b i g g e s t pr o f i t m a k e r a t t h a t
t i m e w i t h a n a d d i t i o n o f 8 8 % t o t h e i r e x i s t i n g b u s i n e s s . Th e
privately owned insurers together had seen a leap of 34% to their
policy sales.

i n s u r a n c e i n d u s t r y e x p e r i e n c e d a y e a r-o n - y e a r g r o w t h o f 2 2 . 7 6 %
with regards to underwritten gross p r e mi u m .

General insurance means managing risk against financial


loss arising due to fire, marine or miscellaneous events as a

Singh told the tribunal that the accident had taken place on the
night of July 1, 2009 when a Santro car had hit him as he was
crossing a road near Dhaula Kuan. He added that due to the
i m p a c t h e s u s t a i n e d g r i e v o u s i n j ur i e s a n d h a d t o b e r u s h e d t o a
nearby hospital.
