1. Introduction

2
Values are generally regarded as the moral standards of human behaviors in
the society. It is a kind of quality of humans, which is applied to human
activities. It is transmitted to a circumstantial factor which depends upon the
judgment of the fact. The word value is derived from the Latin word valeo
which originally meant strength and also health. In French the term valeur
means excellence. Value is a mixture of three concepts such as Idea, Quality
and Supervening. Values can be defined as the principles that guide people's
lives, and have varying significance. Values are the essence of our
personality, and affect us to make decisions, trust people, and arrange our
time and energy in our social life. Values may be treated as keys to solving
many world problems.

Moral values include aspects of good behavior, civilization and conduct of an

individual in human relations, the environment, and God. Noordin (1994), said
values can be defined as an assumptions about matters that are desirable
and at the same time also a criterion or measure of a person's life to form a
good character. Moreover, according to Rajendran and Meng (1994),
generally values connotes pure goodness, duty, purity, beauty and truth.
Kasran (2011), also called moral values is one of the components that shape
the culture and change over time and environmental factors.Generally, the
value can be divided into a positive value such like the good, holy, and true.
Whereas, negative value is considered as deceptive, cruel, and so on.

Without the infusion of moral values towards human development, people will
be chaos. As an example in Japan, where known for its significant skill and
cleverness, however society is facing the threat of high death rate of suicides.
Globally, an estimated 2.5 million people have committed suicide because of
work and 60 per cent of cases suicide occurred in Asia. Japan alone, which is
famous for Symptoms Karoshi (death from loads of serious work), an
estimated 10,000 workers die every year in conjunctions of the work burden.
(Kosmo, 30 December 2013). As a result of the community who do not
practice the moral values will cause the destruction of the family system,
social, murder, pressure and other work in their daily lives.

3
Everybody is going to fulfill his or her need by utilizing ultimate freedom. He or she
forgets the responsibility to society and tries to enjoy freedom in the ultimate sense. This
is really a serious value crisis being faced by the present society. Therefore, every person
should be aware of removing the social problems which are deep-rooted in the human
society. The values like truthfulness, kindness, honesty, law, justice, patriotism,
humanism, etc. are to be preserved in society in order to regulate human life in a well-
ordered manner.

2. The Importance of Moral Values

Every individual understands that life is important hence he or she needs

moral values, which act as guiding principles. Children are taught to show
respect to elders and other people. Moral values are a reflection of an
individual character and spirituality. Parents strive to instill these values in
children because they tend to learn by observing what other people do.

Therefore, the importance of moral values is seen right from the childhood of a person.
Preschool is the first stage or period that lays the foundation of information on human
values. Because information about the values of life is a continuous process found in the
society. Basic values have been developed since oneselfs childhood thus, cooperation
within families whom are the first source of information are pledge to be careful about
their behaviors and attitudes as children see them as a model and teachers are very
important for the thing that affects the children most is what the teacher does in the
classroom. As said by Bandura (1973), based on an individual's behavior namely
by looking at the experience of others to be considered a model and practice
it.

Secondly, moral values as the tool of preparation in the working environment.

According to Kim (1988), based on its review of performance of workers in
South Korea have found productivity and good economic management is
closely related to how and work attitude based on Confucian values, in
addition to the processes of historical and cultural interest. The achievement
is through the practice of western values such as individualism,
entrepreneurship and economic rationality but by showing the family

4
collectivism employees share the same vision. Korean society has great
respect for the institution of family and the value is also brought into every
activity of life including employment.

Furthermore, living in a modern society is necessary to equip yourself with

moral values. As it will prepare yourself in facing modern human society
whom are concerning more in becoming a wealthy individual and forgotten
the importance of the family matters. For instance, intentionally attending
family gathering due to the hectic work schedule or social meetings. Analysis
of the Chinese community in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Yang (1988)
summed up the values of family has become the main value practiced in
every country mentioned which is going through a rapid transformation and
modernity.

3. Factors that affect the value and moral life of the individual

First of all, family provides the single most important environmental influence
on a childs personality development. It is within the family that the infant
first learns to love and trust others. This sense of trust is gained in the early
years through the love and consistent responses of the babys caregiver.
Family members also shape the childs personality development through the
beliefs and behaviors they impart to the child. The family is an intimate room
where the core values, culture as well as ethical climate of the family as well as of the
broader environment is shaped, and where the first social relationships are formed, which
differ from relationships with people outside the family circle. Bogod (1999) said, the
process of family education and upbringing form the foundation for the focused
expectations of every single family member upon which the trust and firmness of family
relations are built.

Besides that, educational environment provides another important influence

on oneselfs personality development. A positive school environment provides
you with information and problem-solving skills, as well as gives you a sense
of yourself as a learner. Whether your individual learning style is fast or slow
is of minor significance. The important thing is that you learn to the best of
your ability. An appreciation for learning will equip you to seek information to

5
help you solve problems throughout life. According to Khamisan (2008),
students whom are able to appreciate the basic knowledge during the
process of teaching and learning and shall practice it in life is a student who
has a quality personality.

Thirdly, the role that religion may play in your life is one of the most personal
elements in your environment.according to Ibrahim (2012), the religious
aspect is an important element for curb the rampant social problems. Hence,
it offers psychological security, which can be helpful in living life and facing
death. People may also feel their religious faith offers them moral and ethical
direction as they strive to reach their goals and become responsible family
and community members. Many teens uphold the religious beliefs they
learned in their childhood. Others who did not have early religious training
may begin investigating religious beliefs during their teen years. If religion is
one of your priorities, you may be influenced by it throughout your life.

Other than that, the influence of your peer group may currently be one of the strongest
forces in your life. You share many experiences with them that contribute to the
development of your personality. Friends can be a source of strength and reinforcement.
Such peer influence is natural and even essential in the development of healthy
adolescents. Peer groups are an important socialization agent. According to
Castrogiovanni (2002), a peer group is defined as a small group of similar age, fairly
close friends, sharing the same activities. In addition, participating in peer group activities
is a primary stage of development and adolescents identities are often closely associated
with that of their peers (Santor et al., 2000).

One of the most significant influences on the personality development is the mass media.
Television, movies, magazines, newspapers, and the Internet are only a few examples of
such media. The media are an important source of both information and entertainment.
For example, educational programs, news reports, and political analyses keep you
informed. The mass media provide ways of learning about the world. Valor notes that
four key dimensions of Aristotle's virtuous friendship, namely: reciprocity,

6
empathy, self-knowledge and the shared life, are found in online social media
in ways that can actually strengthen friendship (Vallor 2011).
4. The Roles of Animated Characters in Application of Moral
Values

Malaysian animated series such like Boboiboy and others are produced by
Les'Copaque and Animonsta Studios Sdn Bhd. Moral values are shown
through these character, undeniable children in Malaysia has been positively
influenced by these well mannered characters. Animation has become the
favourite entertainment for children as well as adult. Undoubtedly, there are
many values and lessons that can be gained from watching the
animation. Therefore, here, I shall discuss several moral values that had
shown through this wellknown children favorite main characters.

Then, as I may continue, the main character had shown a great deal of
courage in every aspect as a boy. His bravery has given all the children the
longing of becoming like one. Wanting to be as independence as the
character and fight for justice is what they wish for. As said by Murni (2012)
"Bravery is an act of courage fight for something important and be able to
deal everything that can be prevented because they believe the truth ". In
conjunction with many bullying cases nowadays, it is appropriate when the
children may have this kind of bravery in protecting themselves from being
the victim.

Upin and Ipin animated series roles is to foster unity among Malaysians of all
races. It has provided a different paradigm of edutainment with ideal interaction using
various ethnics groups or cultures to propagate racial harmony and stability to the nation.
Upin and Ipin narrative, visual semiotics, and characters traits symbolize unity or typical
Malaysian identity among group ethnics focusing on life in the rural area. It portrays the
close tie relations of different ethnic groups, for example, Malays, Chinese and Indians
and Malaysians daily life style that creates a bridge of tolerance, sensitivity, harmony and
uniqueness that can be shared together. According to Salwati et al. (2013), the characters
in Upin and Ipin represents the identity of Malaysians, of which their sensitivity and

7
acceptance of others through respecting and acknowledging other cultures despite their
differences.

Other than that, these animation has played the role as to show the enjoyment and the
importance of richness of culture values that existed years before, which represents
meaningful lifestyle. However, todays younger generation seems to neglect it. This
culture-based lifestyle includes food, language, festive season, games and many more.
Nevertheless, todays younger generation prefers to be online or in digital world, such
as by playing computer games, browsing the internet, mobile phones, and others.
According to Anderson et al. (2008), psychological studies indicate that playing violent
games increases aggressive thoughts, feelings and behaviors, in both short term and long
term.

Nonetheless, these animation characters are exposing and educating the society and the
young generations regarding of the danger of evil crimes for instance, stealing, bullying,
involve in vandalism and drugs. According to Bandura (1973), the behavior of an
individual based on that experience to see someone else who is considered a
model and put it into practice. In addition, Zainal (2009), adding that human
behavior can be viewed from the angle of different backgrounds because
they have been through various life experiences. If things seen it have values
then the matter would be good practice to someone. Even someone who has
a good behavior then it needs to be nurtured and cultivated to continue to
maintain the values of the good.

5. Animated Characters Give Impact in Shaping the Habits and

Character of the

Community

Collaboration among the characters can be seen as when Boboiboy together

with his friends successfully defeated their enemies in any crime scenes.
Nevertheless, Adam and Kassim (2011), said cooperation group will produce
more creativity than doing it alone. He added by collaborate or working as a

8
group will provide satisfaction because it allows us to meet social needs, as to
create a relationships with the friends.

Next, respect, is one of the values had shown and the key elements that have
been applied in this animated series. As for your knowledge, you may see this
value in every series as all the characters respects the elders, friends and
members of family. According Yalawae (2007), showing respects to others
show the particular person is having good behaviour. Meanwhile, Hussain
(2014), said the lack awareness of values such as respect is one of the factors
which led to disciplinary problems.

According to Katip et al (2005), every individual or student should have the

attitude of responsibility to ensure segregation of duties can be conducted
fairly. While Buntat and Masrom (2003), in his study said besides the need to
have a sense of responsibility, the instructor also must have a high sense of
responsibility in guiding students. This value is shown by the main character
as the student himself, and his teacher whom never quit in giving advices to
the students.

Children must experience everyday lessons in honesty and realize that honesty
encompasses more than truth telling. Modeling throughout the school community is a
necessity. This is the moral value that is presented by the characters in Upin and Ipin
animation series, where they are always being truthful and honest even sometimes the
urge of not telling the truth to the sister or grandmother has always occur.

6. Conclusion

Human values play a very leading role in society. Human values take precedence over
social values. Human value is the conception of mankind in general. It is true that the
individual is the chief concern, but as long as individuals exist in society, it may be firmly
said that the modern society will never outgrow its existence. Today with the
technological advancement, communication has tremendously improved, therefore
anything that we say, do or even think Himanshoo will have a direct bearing upon a larger

9
group of people. Today, newspapers inform us of so many crimes: robbery, murder,
genocide, injustice, and political and economic corruption. These do not pass by the
millions of avid readers without creating at least some sort of influence upon their lives.
Films and audio-visuals have been the greatest influence. Thus, one can finally arrive at a
conclusion that the moral behaviour of an individual or a group of individuals affects the
society at large. Consequently, human values play a vital role both for the integrity and
longevity of any human society. Finally, Malaysian children lately have been exposed or
influenced heavily by digital media entertainment. The rise of such entertainment tends to
drive them away from understanding and appreciating the values of Malaysian culture,
therefore we as the parents may need to play the role in order let this young generations
ongoing a normal life as a kid.
