on the best way to designfor outdoor CO, durationand I
have includeddrawings of what I beli6ve wjl I turn out to
be the limits in each direction. The range falls between a
glorified HLG to something built as light as an open

rubber model and the size ol a 1/2A.
As far as track record is concerned- and it is a brand
new classremember- we have little to go on. Phil Ball's
model has won virtually eveMhing so far and has been
rather unkindly referred to as a powered chuck glider. lt
is far from that! The version drawn here is somewhat TOTA LWT. 52"49
stretchedfrom the original that won the Nats scramble

as duration was not the requirementin that event. Sur-
faces are from insulating foam plastic of around 2.71b 3.3 g

Actuallywith a good chargethe motor has been knowh
to run for 2 minutes at this setting. Still air times are
usually in the region of 2l mins which puts it more
mmfortably overthe necessary2 minute max, than even
a very good Coupe!
My own approachis from the indoor standpoint hav-
ing satisfiedmyself that a 280 sq inch model weighing
less than 30 grammes can produce consistant 5-6 P Y LOf.ll /32 i n B U ILT-U P
minutes flights given a reasonable motor. Therefore my
model drawn here weighs little more than Phil's but

such a large airframe was more than just a reflectionof
indoor experience.During the past 15 yearsgiven a new
class to play with, we in this country particularly, have
always started development at the small end and
increasedareas only as we gained oxperience.Inevit-
ably this has resultedin an improvment in still air per-
formance if not handlabilitv.The obvious examoles of
this are Coup d'Hiver where we all started at 150 and
now most fly 200 sq inch plus and of course 1/2A power

where we ignored the American's experienceand per-
sistedwith tiny models u ntil quite late into the 60s.(| can CO,
rememberflying 160squareinch mod6ls with a Tee Dee

and now the average area is something like 250 with
quite a few people having success with even larger Design
wings despitethe shorter run of 7 secs!)
ThereforeI expect something in the region of 3 min 1 3/4in S E C TION SFU LLS IZE

disappointingas I had riskedusing a 110ol.CG which the
section did not take to at all kindly. The model was A LL 3/2" x 3/16"
subsequentlyrebuilt and that is the design produced

by the Humbrol unit and of course the very expensive

I believe I may have an example of both ends of the
performancescale! Phil Ball has stuck to the Humbrol CARVED TA IL WT. 4.0g
unit and has experienceof four! He reports that like the BALSAPROP

than the other two. The onlv Brown I have seen ooerat-
ing is lan Dowsettsand although he is most enthusiastic
