Reboot UofT - Tentative Platform

Lacking in transparency to and participation from the broader student community, the current UTSU
system fails to serve the students it claims to represent and is fraught with opportunities for corruption.
Year after year, even as different groups rotate in and out of power, nothing has changed. The Reboot
Team believes that we need to begin the process of long lasting change by fixing the operational
structure of the Union on all levels. As a group of establishment outsiders, we believe our perspective
best represents the average student at UofT and that our slate is uniquely equipped to tackle the issues
that insiders have turned a blind eye to. The students no longer feel represented by the UTSU. That tells
us that the system is broken and that the UTSU has grown into an out of control multi-million dollar
corporation. It's time to downsize. It's time to reboot.

Platform:

(1) Cut full-time staff at the UTSU (total salary expenditure accounts for $750k/year) and replace with
more part-time student jobs. The collective agreement negotiated by the UTSU with its staff in 2015 will
be up for renewal in the next school year, and we will take this opportunity to cut down on excess staff
and put money into things you actually want and back in your pocket!

(2) dissolve the president/vp executive positions into committees to make student involvement
accessible since then it cuts into less school time and also lessens the chances of corruption by
decreasing the power a single person has. We resolve to be be the last group of full time executives.
Having full time elected positions for students also significantly reduces the potential pool of candidates.

(3) make clubs funding a transparent, objective, and predictable process and provide resources to
respective groups rather than have the UTSU spend the money engaging in political activism that does
not necessarily represent the majority of student opinion because that is not a function we are designed
for nor well equipped to handle. (this can be construed as two points: clubs funding transparency and
anti political involvement/virtue signaling pet projects)

(4) Provide accurate representation of the student bodys needs and wants. The UTSU has failed to
connect with the students it is supposed to represent. We will regularly announce our progress on
commitments so students can hold us to our promises and implement a regular campus wide survey to
receive feedback and suggestions. All thoughts and voices are valued. We will also require the UTSU to
support political stances supported by a majority of students.

(5)Institutionalize parties so that groups are held accountable for actions they have been responsible in
past years. This will provide a framework for better argument and discussion of ideological view and
policies, as well as lowering the barrier to student involvement.

(6) Lobby governing council to not only block any expansion of breadth requirements, but also to get rid
of the existing requirements. The money you pay to the school should go to the courses you want to
take, not to looking for bird courses to fill your breadth requirements. You have enough to worry about
without them.
(7) Split the UTSU up into the UTSU and the SGSU, with SGSU dealing with clubs funding and UTSU
dealing with the health and dental plan. The SGSU would also refund fees collected from professional
faculties based on reduplication of student union services.

(8) We will find a way to deal with the Student Commons catastrophe within the year, or cut our losses
by selling it off. As nice as the commons would be for the UTSU to have, it is not worth the potential risk
of future bankruptcy and leaving future students to deal with millions of dollars of debt caused by past
UTSU incompetence. We will also launch an investigation into the Student Commons catastrophe to
determine if any of the past execs involved can be held liable for this disastrous display of financial
irresponsibility.
