Nearly four weeks into the presidency of

Donald Trump and the resistance is still going
strong. The day after the inauguration, women
and men wearing pink pussy hats lled the
streets in Washington, D.C. and nationwide
for the womens march. The next weekend,
protesters crammed airports in protest of
Trumps Muslim travel ban as travelers were
detained. Around the country, demonstrators
are taking a page from the Tea Party and
shouting down Republican members of
Congress for threatening to repealObamacare.
Its just the start of what may be a long four
years or eight of the Trump administration,

65-year-old says Lewes
ocer threw him down
causing brain injury

A 65-year-old gay man has led a
complaint with the Lewes, Del., police
department accusing an ocer of
causing him to suer a serious head
injury and severe pain in his arm and
back by throwing him onto the oor in
the emergency department at Beebe
Healthcare, a hospital that serves
Lewes and nearby Rehoboth Beach.
Lewes is considered a close second
to Rehoboth Beach as a popular
seaside destination for LGBT people in
the mid-Atlantic region, including D.C.
and Baltimore.
Robaire G. Lizama, a former D.C.
resident who lives in Lewes, told the
Washington Blade he believes Ocer
Tyrone Woodyard targeted him for
abusive treatment and an improper
arrest because hes gay.
I dont think he would grab a straight
man, bear hug him and then body slam
him to the ground and try to tell him
hes being arrested, Lizama said.
Police arrest records show that the
incident began on the evening of Jan.
25 shortly after Lizama accompanied a ROBAIRE G. LIZAMA says he was thrown

LGBT gang members-turned-entrepreneurs appeal for support

Nearly 10 years ago, when they had
the distinction of being members of the
nations only known LGBT youth gang
called Check It, most members never
imagined the group could evolve into a
budding fashion clothing business.
But members and supporters say thats
exactly what happened after several of
them began organizing an eort about
ve years ago to produce and sell T-shirts
and other clothing items and put together
several runway shows.
Last year, they launched a business
called Check It Enterprises, LLC.
One year later we obtained our
own building in downtown Anacostia
Washington D.C., the group states on
its recently launched website, which
includes a mail order section that enables
customers to purchase the groups latest
line of T-shirts.

Fourth suspect arrested in D.C. trans murder case

D.C. police on Tuesday announced
the arrest of a fourth suspect in the July
4, 2016, fatal shooting of 22-year-old
transgender woman Deeniquia Dee
Dee Dodds on a street near her home in
Northeast Washington.
Police said they charged Cyheme
Hall, 21, of Southeast Washington with
rst-degree murder while armed in
connection with the Dodds murder. A
D.C. Superior Court complaint led by
the U.S. Attorneys Oce lists the charge
against Hall as rst-degree felony murder
while armed.
Halls arrest comes one week after police
announced they had identied him as a
suspect in the case and called on the public
to help police nd him, saying he should be
considered armed and dangerous.

eventually generate a prot to pay for
community-oriented programs they would
like to undertake, according to Moten.
This is a story of true transformation,
any details about how police located him.
Two of the suspects in the case Jalonte
Little, 26, of Southeast D.C., and Shareem
Hall, 22, of District Heights, Md., were
arrested in September also on a charge of
rst-degree felony murder while armed.
A third suspect, Montee Tyree Johnson,
21, of Southeast D.C., was arrested Feb. 8,
according to D.C. police, and also charged
with rst-degree felony murder while armed
in connection with the Dodds murder.
At the time of Shareem Halls arrest in
September police led a 13-page adavit
in court disclosing that Hall, Little and at
least two other suspects were implicated
in a series of armed street robberies
against eight transgender women,
including Dodds, in two locations in the
early morning hours of July 4.
Neither police nor prosecutors with the
U.S. Attorneys oce have said whether
the two Halls charged in the case are
related and which of the four suspects
shot Dodds in the neck, which led to her
death nine days later.
The complaint led in court Tuesday by
prosecutors at the time of Cyheme Halls
arrest suggests, but doesnt denitively

Pannell said. It is really inspiring. And I think
that for us and all people, particularly those
of us in the LGBT community, it is imperative
that we support these youth and their quest
to turn their lives around and become a
positive force in this city, Pannell said.
He noted that LGBT people have not
been among those who have responded
to Check It Enterprises Go Fund Me site,
www.gofundme.com/check-it-building-
equipment-fund.
What is so heartbreaking to me is that
so few adults in the LGBT community,
particularly our leaders, have done
anything to really help them, said Pannell.
I hope its because maybe they simply
have not interfaced with these young
conrm, that investigators believe he may
be the one who allegedly shot Dodds.
Cyheme Hall, within the District of
Columbia, while armed with a rearm,
in perpetrating and attempting to
perpetrate the crime of robbery, killed
Doddsby shooting her with rearm on
or about July 4, 2016, the complaint says.
D.C. attorney Cheryl Stein, who
specializes in criminal law, said that
under the law in most states and in D.C.,
one or more people found to have aided
and abetted another person who shoots
someone to death in an action listed as
a murder can also be charged with that
murder, even if they were not the ones
who pulled the trigger.
An aider and abettor is just as guilty as
the principal under the law, she said.
The arrest adavit in September said
three of the trans women targeted by
the suspects on July 4 were robbed at
4th and K streets, N.E. about 3:40 a.m. by
three male suspects brandishing pistols,
according to accounts by witnesses.

people personally. Therefore, we need
to do more so we can actually have older
LGBT residents in this city help them out,
he said, adding, theyre not looking for a
hand out, theyre looking for a hand up.
Moten, who for years has worked to
stop youth gang violence in the city, has
been credited with helping to connect
Check It members with others, including
Assistant D.C. Police Chief Diane
Groomes, who encouraged them to
pursue what began as a dream.
At that time, Check It members had been
hanging out in Chinatown and the rapidly
gentrifying Gallery Place section of the city,
often getting into ghts with other young
people who hung out there. Members,
including Check It co-founder David Dae-
Dae Frye, have said the group formed
as a means of bringing together African-
American gay, lesbian, and transgender
youth who had long been victimized by
bullying from other youth at their schools
and in their respective neighborhoods.
Last June, a documentary lm about
the group called Check It made by
lm producers Dana Flor and Toby
Oppenheimer, had its premiere in D.C.
The lm chronicles Check Its evolution
from a gang to a fashion enterprise
through interviews with its members,
including founding member Star Bennett,
who calls the group erce and fabulous.

that belonged to Little. Police later that
day stopped and arrested Little while
inside the vehicle for an unrelated
robbery of a transgender woman that
occurred in June.
An important break in the Dodds
murder case came about when police
discovered Little was wearing a GPS
monitoring device on his ankle that
was placed there in connection with yet
another unrelated criminal case.
When homicide detectives tracked the
data from his monitoring device they
discovered Little was at the location
where witnesses said Dodds was shot
shortly before 3 a.m. on the 200 block of
Division Ave., N.E.
By also tracking Littles cell phone
records investigators were able to place
Shareem Hall at the location where Dodds
was shot. The adavit says this and other
leads obtained by detectives enabled
them to charge Little and Shareem Hall
with Dodds murder last September.

Hall to the Dodds murder couldnt

DNC chair hopeful wants to lead party to victory in heartland
South Bends gay mayor
assails Trump, Pence

The mayor of a small city in Indiana
has emergedfrom the pack of candidates
seeking to become Democratic National
Committee chair with a promise to make
the party viable in Americas heartland,
following the partys 2016 election losses.
Pete Buttigieg, the 35-year-old, two-
term gay mayor of South Bend, Ind.,
said in a sit-down interview with the
Washington Blade that his experience as
a local ocial from the Midwest is whats
needed to lead Democrats to victory.
For a party that really needs to
reconnect across our 50-plus states and
territories, I think Im in a better position
than most to deliver on that based on
my experience, based on my bread and
butter, which is local government and
political organizing, Buttigieg said.
Along with New Hampshire Democratic
Party Chair Ray Buckley, Buttigieg is one
of two candidates in the mix who could
become the rst openly gay DNC chair.
Buttigieg, however, downplayed that
potential distinction.
I want to be, of course, a chair for
everybody, Buttigieg said. I think that
were a party that has stood up for
fairness, has stood up for freedom and I
think the LGBT community has seen a lot
of the most urgent issues around that in
the last few years.
Representing Millennials in the race
for DNC chair, Buttigieg was once a dark
horse candidate, but has quickly risen to
prominence and won a signicant boost
after a recent endorsement from former
Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley.
Among his credentials are an education
at Harvard University, studying at Oxford
as a Rhodes Scholar and service in the
Afghanistan in the Navy Reserve. Buttigieg
came out as gay in 2015 in an essay
published in the South Bend Tribune days
before the U.S. Supreme Court ruled for
marriage equality nationwide.
Buttigieg was serving as mayor during
outrage and intense media coverage
after then-Indiana Gov. Mike Pence
now vice president of the United States
signed into law a religious freedom bill
thatenabled anti-LGBT discrimination.
The thing about Mike Pence is, hes
a super-nice guy, who just genuinely
believes this stu, Buttigieg said. He
operates from a dierent reality than
the rest of us operate from. Hes written
that cigarettes dont kill, he thinks climate
change is made up. He must assume that
people get up in the morning one day and
decide to be gay.
Although the White House has said
PETE BUTTIGIEG could be the rst openly gay DNC chair.
President Trump is respectful and
supportive of LGBTQ rights, Buttigieg
said LGBT people need only look at the
presidents immigration policies to know
that couldnt be further from the truth.
No one who specializes in harming
vulnerable groups can be regarded as
a friend to the LGBT community even if
were not the group hes harming at the
moment, Buttigieg said. And I would also
say I do not believe that he cares about the
LGBT community because I do not believe
that he cares about anything at all.
Chris Hillmann, chair of the New Jersey
LGBT Democratic Caucus, is among
Buttigiegs supporters and said being a
Democratic mayor from a red state makes
him a great choice to lead our party.
He is someone from outside
Washington with a dierent set of ideas
and connections to real people and knows
what they need to hear from Democratic
candidates, Hillmann said. His being a
gay soldier who speaks seven languages
and won re-election with 80 percent of
the vote just makes his all around package
even more impressive. As we get closer
to the vote in Atlanta I think more people
will see that we dont need a rerun of the
Hillary versus Bernie campaign. We need
a fresh start from the next generation of
political leaders and its time for the DNC
to embrace the future.
The crowed eld to become the next
DNC chair includes Buckley, former
Labor Secretary Thomas Perez and
Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), co-chair of
the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
The election for chair will take place at
the DNCs winter meeting in Atlanta,
scheduled for Feb. 23-26.

Washington Blade: Lets talk about
the DNC race. What do you think
you have to oer the DNC that other
candidates arent oering?
Pete Buttigieg: I think Im in the best
position to deliver the changes that
everybody wants to see. Everybodys

talking about a fresh start. Why not put in
a fresh, new leader? Were all talking about
competing in red and purple states.
Ive been winning elections in Indiana.
Were all talking about empowering a new
generation. Im a Millennial candidate.
Were all talking about the solutions that
are not going to come from Washington.
Im a local ocial who doesnt get up in the
morning and go to an oce in Washington.
For a party that really needs to
reconnect across our 50-plus states and
territories, I think Im in a better position
than most to deliver on that based on
my experience, based on my bread and
butter, which is local government and
political organizing.
Blade: You were just endorsed by
Martin OMalley. To what extent do you
think that has boosted your standing
in your bid to become DNC chair?
Buttigieg: I think endorsements
are certainly helpful, whether its a
former DNC chair like Steve Grossman,
a successful governor like Martin
OMalley, especially since were headed
to his city [of Baltimore for a forum],
an organization like Vote Vets, which
endorsed us yesterday. The coming tide
of endorsements is helpful.
The most important thing, of course,
is the 447 people who vote, and were
working very hard to connect with all of
them and to continue remaining intouch
with voters most of whom, weve
found, are not making up their mind until
very late in the game, which helps us.
Blade: Do you have any committed
support from DNC members?
Buttigieg: Sure. When were ready to
put out a hard count to media, youll know
it. What Ill say is, yeah, were pleased with
the support that weve got and at the
same time were talking to a lot of folks
who are keeping their powder dry.
Blade: If elected, youd be the
rst openly gay person to chair the
Democratic National Committee. What
would be the signicance of that?
Buttigieg: I want to be, of course, a

chair for everybody. I think that were a
party that has stood up for fairness, has
stood up for freedom and I think the
LGBT community has seen a lot of the
most urgent issues around that in the
last few years. And its a moment where
everybody in America whether its
DREAMers, or LGBT Americans or blue-
collar workers in the industrial Midwest
wants to know where they belong in
the American future, and I think I have a
chance to send a pretty strong message
about why everybody can belong in the
America that we want to build.
Blade: Theres been a lot of
discussion about why Hillary Clinton
lost the election. Why do you think
that was the case?
Buttigieg: When the margins this close,
people have oered a thousand reasons
and theyre all right. But a couple of
patterns that I noticed in our part of the
country: One is that we spend a lot of time
talking about the politicians themselves,
there was a lot of talk about Hillary, Im
with her. And then increasingly the theme
of the campaign became, Were against
him. That left a lot of people at home
saying, OK, but whos talking about me?
Were talking about the candidates
themselves as if they were what mattered
most, missing the chance to talk to the
voters about how their lives were going
to be impacted by the decisions made in
Washington.
I also think there were a lot of areas
where we didnt show up the way we could
have. Even in rural counties, even in rural
counties were not going to win, you still
got to show up because losing by 60-40
versus 80-20 adds up when it comes to
statewide counts in the Electoral College,
and I think we need to make sure that our
message does a better job of balancing the
values that make us Democrats with on-
the-ground outcomes and how all of this
hashes out in peoples everyday real lives.
Blade: I noticed you didnt mention
either the Comey letter or Russian
involvement in your response there.
Do you think those were not factors?
Buttigieg: I think they were factors, but
knowing the majority that Democratic
values command among the American
people, an election should never be that
close to begin with.
Blade: What is your plan for LGBT
issues at the DNC?
Buttigieg: I think the LGBT community
cant be taken for granted by the DNC,
especially given the level of pinkwashing
of the Trump campaign that we saw.
And even though the latest worrisome
rumors of some kind of executive action
so far havent led to anything, we have
to recognize that this is a president
who specializes in targeting vulnerable

Pelosi: DOJ reversal on trans protections disappointing

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi
(D-Calif.) said Tuesday the U.S. Justice
Departments decision to reverse
course in litigation to defend Obama
administration guidance barring schools
from discriminating against transgender
students is deeply disappointing.
In an exclusive statement to the
Washington Blade, Pelosi also made news
about a friend-of-the-court brief House
Democrats have prepared on behalf of
transgender student Gavin Grimm in
a related case pending before the U.S.
Supreme Court.
It is deeply disappointing that the
Department of Justice is not taking every
opportunity to ght discrimination, Pelosi
said. Democrats will keep demanding
that the Trump administration advocate
for all Americans. From the amicus brief
we recently led in support of civil rights
for transgender students to confronting
bigotry and discrimination wherever it is
practiced, House Democrats will never
stop ghting for LGBT equality.

Amid continuing threats to North
Carolinas economy as a result of House Bill
2, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper has made
a new proposal to convince state lawmakers
to come to an agreement on lifting the anti-
LGBT law, although the response from LGBT
advocates is lackluster.
Cooper unveiled the three-part
proposal during a news conference on
Tuesday with Democratic leaders in the
legislature, Reps. Darren Jackson and
Sen. Dan Blue, warning that economic
consequences would continue to befall
North Carolina if action isnt taken.
I know North Carolinians are tired
of hearing about this, Cooper said in
a statement. HB2 has divided us and
stained our reputation. Ive proposed a
common sense compromise that will get
HB2 o the books and address concerns
on both sides. Its time for Republican
leaders to step up and lead their members

Coopers repeal proposal comes on
the heels of a letter from the North
Carolina Sports Association to the state
legislature informing lawmakers that
keeping HB2 on the books will result in
the loss of all NCAA championship events
through 2022 and an estimated loss of
$250 million in revenue for the state. As a
result of economic boycotts over the law,
including cancelled business expansions
and events from performers in the
state, North Carolina has already lost an
estimated $600 million in revenue.
Signed into law last year by former North
Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory after a single
day of consideration by the Republican-
controlled legislature, HB2 bars cities from
enacting pro-LGBT ordinances, nullifying
one recently enacted by Charlotte, and
prohibits transgender people from using
the bathroom in schools and government
buildings consistent with their
gender identity.
Lawmakers enacted HB2 after stoking
fears thatthe Charlotte ordinance would
enable men to enter womens restrooms
and commit sexual assaults, although
In May, the Departments of Justice and
Education under President Obama issued
guidance saying schools are barred
from discriminating against transgender
students, including in bathroom use,
under the prohibition of gender bias in
Title IX of the Education Amendments
of 1972. That means schools refusing to
allow transgender students to use the
restroom consistent with their gender
identity are at risk of losing federal funds.
But as a result of litigation led by Texas
Attorney General Ken Paxton on behalf of
12 states, U.S. District Judge Reed OConnor
issued a nationwide injunction last year
barring enforcement of the guidance. In
response, the Justice Department under
former U.S. Attorney General Loretta
Lynch appealed the decision to the U.S.
Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and sought
a stay limiting the order to the states that
sued over the guidance.
On Friday, less than 48 hours after the
conrmation of U.S. Attorney General
Je Sessions, the Justice Department
reversed course, ling a subsequent brief
withdrawing the request for a stay and
announcing the department is currently
considering how best to proceed in this
appeal. That could be the rst indication
the Trump administration intends to rescind
the guidance, which was among President
Trumps anti-LGBT campaign promises.
The White House hasnt responded
that claim is baseless because similar
laws exist in 19 states and more than
100 cities across the country and no such
incidents have occurred.
Coopers proposal seeks to repeal HB2;

A requirement that local
governments give the legislature 30
days notice before voting on non-
discrimination ordinances

on whether the Republican-controlled
legislature would accept the proposal.

a vote to repeal HB2 as part of a deal
with Charlotte in which the city agreed
to rescind its LGBT non-discrimination
ordinance, which had prompted the

to repeated requests to comment on
whether President Trump supports the
Justice Departments decision to reverse
course in the litigation. On Monday,
a quartet of groups the Human
Rights Campaign, GLSEN, the National
Center for Transgender Rights and the
National Womens Law Center sent a
letter to the Justice Department and the
Education Department urging the Trump
administration to keep the guidance.
Even though the OConnor order bars
the U.S. government from asserting
Title IX applies to transgender students,
transgender advocates have insisted
students are still able to sue on their
own under that law if they feel theyve
experienced discrimination as a result of
their gender identity.
Meanwhile, a Pelosi aide said she signed
a House Democratic friend-of-the-court
brief prepared by Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.),
the longest serving openly gay member of
the U.S. House, in the case of Gloucester
County School Board v. G.G. In that related
case before the Supreme Court, Grimm, a
transgender student, is suing his Virginia
school to use the restroom consistent with
his gender identity.
The Washington Blade couldnt obtain
additional information about this brief
at the time of this posting. The deadline
for ling friend-of-the-court briefs in this
case on behalf of Grimm is March 2.
state legislature to retaliate last year by
passing HB2. But that repeal eort was
thwarted after Republicans insisted on
including a cooling o period in the bill
that would prevent cities for six months
from enacting pro-LGBT ordinances and
Democrats wouldnt agree to it.
During his campaign against McCrory,
Cooper pledged not only to repeal HB2,
but also support of statewide non-
discrimination protections. A separate
proposal introduced by House and
Senate Democrats would accomplish
both of those goals, although Cooper
hasnt explicitly supported the legislation
and instead moved his own proposal.
LGBT groups that endorsed Cooper
as a means to repeal HB2 issued
statements in response to his proposal
saying the compromise is unnecessary,
although they wouldnt name Cooper as
the originator of the idea and instead
criticized Republicans.

people and communities for abuse, and
therefore, no matter who hes abusing at
the moment, he cannot be a friend of the
LGBT community, and a vice president who
has one of the most spectacular anti-LGBT
records of any living American politician.
Blade: But is there anything in terms
of goals for the structure of the DNC?
Buttigieg: Obviously, we got to make
sure the council is strong. We got to make
sure that we have good representation
among our sta, our vendors, our
delegates. I think all of us are going to say
basically the same thing about that. Thats
a commitment that we make to the LGBT
community and to every community,
every community of interest that makes a
part of the Democratic coalition.
At the same time, I dont want people in
the LGBT community or any other part of
the Democratic coalition to feel like were
going to talk to the community one at a
time, or that were trying to buy people o.
We want people to be Democrats because
they believe in Democratic values and
support Democratic candidates because
its the right thing to do, and living our
values in terms of the makeup of our
delegates and our sta, thats something
we do because its the right thing to do,
not in order to impress people.
Blade: Can you elaborate a little
more on how the Democratic Party
could win in places like Indiana?
Barack Obama won in 2008, but that
was an aberration.
Buttigieg: Yeah, but we also have a
Democratic U.S. senator. Up until 2010,
ve of our nine members of Congress were
Democrats. Then redistricting happened
and a few other things happened.
You can see how the 50-State Strategy
really beneted a state like mine if you
look at where we stood in lets say 2008
or 2010. And so, part of it is weve got
to make sure were investing in every
part of the country. We also got to make
sure our message is explained in terms
it cases out for real people, so when we
talk about something like ACA [repeal],
we talk about the stories of the human
beings who are going to be aected by
it. I think people in my own immediate
and extended family would be aected
by having the rug pulled out from under
us with something ACA [repeal]. We cant
just be talking in terms of statistics.
Communities, working-class communities,
rural communities actually have the most to
lose from bad policy. Weve got to make sure
we talk about policy, not on their own terms
and certainly not in terms of the game in
Washington, but in terms of whatll it actually
do to and for people in their everyday lives.
Blade: How would you evaluate
being gay in a state that has never had
statewide LGBT non-discrimination
protections and very recently Mike
Pence as governor? It certainly must
be dierent than being gay in a place
like Washington, D.C.
Buttigieg: Yeah, just a little. When I
came out, we didnt really know what
impact that was going to have, but it
obviously wasnt a problem for the re-
elect. We got 80 percent for the re-elect.
There was some ugliness online, that sort
of thing. But for the most part, people
just wanted to know that I was going
to be a good mayor, and people in the
community more broadly, they wanted to
know theyre going to be OK.
I did have a lot of people especially
younger people, students who maybe
didnt know that their community had a
place for them whove come forward or
come out or come to the LGBT center, and
thats a really compelling thing to see. But
I had people who reached out from other
parts of my life, people in the military,
people I went on missions with and I had
no idea they were in the same boat. And
of course, living in Mike Pences Indiana,
its probably that much more important
for people to know that everybodys safe.
But we got a long way to go. We had a guy
beaten to death because he was gay in South
Bend in 2016. And were one of the handful
of states that doesnt have hate crimes
legislation. We got a very long way to go.
On the other hand, the other thing I
noticed after I came out, and something
that I think was especially important
because during the whole religious
freedom ght, I was concerned about
people who really want to come to the
right side of history, but they just cant
get themselves there yet, making sure we
didnt force them into a corner and push
them away, making sure we kind of help
them get there.
And so, one thing thats been amazing
to me is people, especially in an older
generation who actually in an occasionally
awkward way, but a very endearing
way, loved the opportunity to show that
theyre accepting women in their 70s
who would come meet my partner, and
then come to me later and say, I met
your friend. Hes wonderful.
And people in their own way are trying
to get on this road to acceptance. I had
the newspaper delivery guy stopped
bringing me my paper after I came out for
some weird reason, and my neighbor told
me with tears in her eyes she was about
my moms age, I imagine theyre pretty
conservative, we dont talk politics much
basically told me about how she let him
have it. I started getting my paper again.
Blade: Thats the reason why? You

Gay Afghan refugee
arrested in DeVos protest
A gay man who ed Afghanistan with his family in 1990 out of fear of
persecution and death from the Taliban was among several protesters arrested
on Feb. 10 for attempting to block U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos from
entering a D.C. middle school.
Bilal A. Askaryar, 32, has been charged with assaulting a police ocer and
failing to obey a lawful command of an ocer during a protest outside Jeerson
Middle School Academy in Southwest Washington. Police said about 50 protesters
confronted DeVos as she entered and left the school in a government car.
[T]he defendant (Askaryar) along with several other protesters blocked the
driveway to the parking lot of the school and blocked the path of Secretary of
Education B. Devos vehicle, a police adavit in support of Askaryars arrest says.
The defendant (Askaryar) and the other protesters got violent and started
pushing and shoving the police ocers on the scene, the adavit says. It says
that Askaryar was caught on video pushing a police sergeant and a police ocer.
Court records show Askaryar is scheduled to appear in D.C. Superior Court for a
misdemeanor status hearing on March 17. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In a Jan. 31 column in the Blade he said he and his family were lucky to be able
to ee Afghanistan as refugees on a journey that took them to India, Pakistan
and Hong Kong before being granted U.S. political asylum in San Francisco in
1990. He has since become a U.S. citizen and has received a masters of arts
degree from American Universitys School of International Service.
In his Blade column he criticized President Donald Trumps controversial
executive order seeking to temporarily ban refugees from entering the U.S. from
at least seven mostly Muslim countries. He said the ban could endanger the lives
of thousands of refugees eeing persecution from the countries included in the
ban, which has been lifted temporarily by court rulings.

U.S. LGBT envoy to remain in place
The Trump administration will allow the position of special U.S. envoy to
promote LGBT and intersex rights abroad to remain in place at the State
Department.
A State Department spokesperson told Foreign Policy that Randy Berry is
continuing in his role under the current administration. A State Department
spokesperson reiterated this statement to the Washington Blade.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and
Labor Randy Berry, a career Foreign Service ocer, continues in his role under
the current administration, the spokesperson told the Blade.
Former Secretary of State John Kerry in 2015 announced the creation of the
position within the State Departments Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and
Labor.
Berry has traveled to Jamaica, Honduras, Botswana and more than 40 other
countries. His bio on the State Departments website currently identies him
as deputy assistant secretary and special envoy for the human rights of LGBTI
persons.
Mondays statement comes against the backdrop of concerns over whether
President Trump would eliminate the special LGBT envoy position. Advocates
have also urged the new administration to continue U.S. eorts to promote LGBT
and intersex issues around the world that the Obama administration began.
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins asked Trump late last year
to remove activists from the State Department who promote LGBT and
reproductive rights abroad. A spokesperson for the presidents then-transition
team told the Blade that any suggestion that discrimination of any kind will be
condoned or tolerated in a Trump administration is simply absurd.
Media reports that emerged last week suggest Ivanka Trump and her husband,
Jared Kushner, urged the president not to sign a religious freedom executive
order.
The Justice Department on Feb. 10 withdrew its request to stay a federal
judges ruling against the Obama administrations guidance to public schools
that they allow transgender students use bathrooms consistent with their
gender identity. The agency took the action a day after U.S. Attorney General Je
Sessions was sworn in.
The U.N. Human Rights Council last June approved a resolution that created
the U.N.s rst-ever independent LGBT rights watchdog.
Vitit Muntarbhorn, an international law professor at Chulalongkorn University
in Bangkok, has held the position since last fall. Canadian Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau last November named MP Randy Boissonnault as his governments
special advisor on LGBT, queer and two-spirited issues.

Russian LGBT activist disappears in Ukraine
A Russian LGBT rights advocate has disappeared in eastern Ukraine.
Human Rights Watch in a Feb. 9 press release said Grey Violet and Victoria
Miroshnichenko arrived in the self-proclaimed Donetsk Peoples Republic, which pro-
Russian separatists control, on Jan. 31.
The organization said Violet, who is transgender, and Miroshnichenko planned to stage a public
performance in the city of Donetsk in support of the LGBT community and record it on video.
Human Rights Watch said Violets friends last heard from her at around 11 a.m. on Jan. 31.
The friends told Human Rights Watch they received information that indicates security ocials
from the self-proclaimed Donetsk Peoples Republic detained Violet and Miroshnichenko
shortly after they arrived in the region. MediaZona, an independent Russian news website that
two members of Pussy Riot launched, quoted a friend who said local authorities told Violet and
Miroshnichenko were not in the custody of police or security ocials.
It is distressing that no one has been able to nd out where Grey Violet and
Miroshnichenko are since they arrived in the DNR 10 days ago, said Human Rights
Watch Ukraine researcher Tanya Cooper in the Feb. 9 press release. Their sudden
disappearance requires prompt and eective investigation.
Cooper told the Washington Blade on Monday that Human Rights Watch has no more
news about Violet and Miroshnichenko and their well-being. She said her organization
has urged the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the International
Committee of the Red Cross and the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights to ask
authorities in the so-called Donetsk Peoples Republic about the activists fate.
This is a truly horrible situation, Cooper told the Blade. Theyve been missing now
for two weeks.
Pro-Russian separatists have governed the self-proclaimed Donetsk Peoples Republic
in eastern Ukraine since 2014.
They have banned the promotion of so-called gay propaganda to minors. LGBT
activists in the region with whom the Blade has spoken say the ongoing conict between
Ukrainian troops and the separatists has adversely impacted their work.

LGBT activist runs for Honduran Congress
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras A prominent Honduran activist would become the rst
openly LGBT person elected to the countrys Congress if he wins his campaign this year.
Erick Martnez, who is the coordinator of the Diversity Movement in Resistances Human
Rights Committee, is one of 23 candidates from the Liberty and Refoundation and Anti-
Corruption Parties, a left-leaning coalition that opposes President Juan Orlando Hernndezs
ruling National Party, who are on the ballot in the Francisco Morazn Department in
which Tegucigalpa is located. The ve candidates who win the most votes in the March 12
primaries will advance to the general election that will take place in November.
I know that the citizenry would pay close attention to LGBT people if they were in
the Congress, Martnez told the Washington Blade last week during an interview at a
Tegucigalpa coee shop that is near the U.S. Embassy. This is a responsibility.
The Diversity Movement in Resistance formed in response to the 2009 coup that
toppled then-President Manuel Zelaya.
Zelayas wife, Xiomara Castro, ran against Hernndez in the countrys 2013 presidential
election. She is once again running for president as the Liberty and Refoundation Partys
candidate.
Martnez is running on a platform that includes improving the Honduran health care
system and access to it, eradicating violence against women and strengthening the
countrys primary education system.
The problem of violence is a health condition, said Martnez.
Martnez spoke with the Blade less than 48 hours after gang members killed ve
people during a wake that was being held in Mirador de Oriente, a poor Tegucigalpa
neighborhood, for a bus driver who had been murdered. The 20-year-old man was
killed in the same house in which the massacre took place.
Honduras population is slightly more than 8 million people.
Martnez told the Blade that an average of 17 people are killed each day in the Central
American country that borders Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.
Rene Martnez, an activist and well-known member of the National Party, which is right-wing
and has strong ties to Honduras Roman Catholic and evangelical churches, in the city of San
Pedro Sula, was strangled to death last June. Cattrachas, a Tegucigalpa-based lesbian feminist
network, notes 229 LGBT Hondurans are known to have been killed between 2009-2016.
Martnez told the Blade that women and LGBT Hondurans are the most frequent
victims of violence and are the most vulnerable. He said lesbian and especially trans
women are particularly susceptible.
They are the most vulnerable, said Martnez. They are the most visible and are
those who the citizenry targets for violence.

Resistance to Trump nds plenty of LGBT help

but theres every indication this outcry
from progressives, which includes
voices from the LGBT movement, will
continueover the long haul.
Firas Nasr, a queer activist who has
organized dance protests in D.C. on behalf
of WERK for Peace, said the activism will
sustain itself through a combination of
creativity and persistence.
One thing that were really trying to
bring into the resistance here is creativity,
is love and connection, Nasr said. Those
are things that people are seeking from
the start. Thats the reason why we go out
to resist in the rst place, so hearing that
be the end and creating or facilitating a
space where that can be expressed I think
is the work that we do.
John Becker, a gay D.C. progressive
activist and blogger, said Trump is
counting on protest fatigue and initiating
multiple controversial policies such as
plans to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico
border and a travel ban on seven Muslim-
majority countries in hopes people will
forget as time goes on.
I think thats part of their strategy is
to just throw as much awful, deplorable,
dicult things at us right away and
overwhelm people like a Blitzkrieg,
Becker said. I think theyre counting
on dulling our senses and our sense of
outrage and getting us exhausted.
Anger with the Trump White House
continues to grow not just over policy,
but over the scandalous revelations
about Trumps ties to Russia. Just this
week, National Security Adviser Michael
Flynn resigned after revelations he spoke
with Russian ocials about Obama-era
sanctions and media reports revealed
Trump aides were in contact with Russian
intelligence ocials during the campaign.
If poll numbers are any indication,
the demonstrations are working and
likely wont let up soon. A Gallup poll
released on Sunday found just 40
percent of Americans approve of Trump
compared to 55 percent who disapprove
of him. That low popularity is atypical
for a new president. Last week, a Public
Policy Polling poll found Americans are
now evenly split 47-47 on support for
impeaching Trump and support for
removing him from oce continues.
Igor Volsky, a gay D.C.-based
progressive activist and deputy director
of the Center for American Progress
Fund, said he doesnt spend much time
worrying that somehow all of a sudden
hes going to get his act together and
people arent going to be outraged with
controversial policies continuing to come
from the White House.
I think people are outraged because
he does very outrageous things and if

have sparked worldwide protests.

that continues, I think well see people
in the street, well see people online be
very, very upset, Volsky said. And theyll
create for those people the political space
and the political pressure for members
of Congress to break with Trump, to
disagree with Trump to undermine the
kind of agenda hes pursuing.
Tea for progressives, too?
Observers are already making
comparisons of progressive activism
to the Tea Party under President
Obama, which urged no votes from
Republicans at every possible moment
on his agenda even at the expense of
government operations. But dont tell
that to progressive activists who see a
cleardistinction between themselves and
conservative activists.
Volsky said he wouldnt a make a
comparison between the Tea Party and
progressive activism over Trump because
the latter has already enjoyed much
more sustainability early on in a new
administration.
In many respects, I think, Americans
today are far ahead of where the Tea
Party was, Volsky said. I mean, were
weeks into the administration and
youre seeing three weekends in a row of
tremendous protests.
But like the Tea Party with Republicans,
Volsky said Democrats may feel the re
of the progressive movement if they dont
listen to its demands and face ousters in
mid-term season.
You saw a lot of Republicans lose their
seats to challenges from the right because
the Tea Party created this sense that
conservatives, who nobody thought would
be in trouble from the right wing of their
base, got in a lot of trouble, and lost their
seats, Volsky said. People like Eric Cantor,
so whether or not thats going to happen
in this case, well have to wait and see.
Theres also a dierence in support for
both movements. As Becker pointed out,
a Washington Post poll found only 27 of
Americans supported the Tea Party at
the height of the movement in 2010, but
60 percent now support the nationwide
womens marches.
I think that there are similarities,
but the critical distinction rests in the
genesis of it because the Tea Party in
Barack Obamathere was no question
about the legitimacy of his election,
Becker said. He won the popular vote,
he won the electoral vote, there was no
foreign interference, there was no FBI
meddling. There wasnt the same kind
of foundational questions about the
legitimacy of his mandate in a way that
there is for Trump.
In terms of whether the progressive
movement like the Tea Party should
encourage Democrats to vote no
arbitrarily on everything in the
congressional agenda under Trump, weekend June 11; other cities are looking
views are nuanced.
Volsky expressed caution when
asked if Democrats should vote no
on everything that comes up during
the Trump administration, saying the
approach should be more selective.
Progressives are seeking to derail the
conrmation of Trumps pick for labor
secretary, Andrew Puzder, who may be
the nominee most in danger of rejection
in the Senate. A coalition of LGBT groups
including the Equality Federation and the
LGBT labor group Pride at Work have
expressed opposition to Puzder, saying
his employment practices and opposition
to raising the minimum wage make him a
bad choice for LGBT workers.
Becker said one aspect in which
Democrats should emulate Republicans
emboldened by the Tea Party is by
blocking the conrmation of Neil Gorsuch
to the U.S. Supreme Court, citing GOP
refusal to consider Merrick Garland and
the Trump nominees record.
They set that precedent last year when
they for no reason at all other than
partisan spite denied Merrick Garland
a hearing and refused to conrm him,
Becker said. In terms of the Supreme
Court, I do think the Democrats should
follow precedent set by the Republicans.

Asserting a federal government
shutdown would sort of have to be a
bridge to be crossed if we come to it,
Becker said at this time he couldnt bring
himself to support such action because of
the negative impacts of the 2013 shutdown.
The shutting down of the federal
government is something that was such
a drastic and reckless step that the
Republicans took, Becker said. I cant
say that is something I would support at
this moment.

has largely remained steadfast in its
opposition to Trump and has continued
to speak out against his policies despite
the assertion from the White House

solidarity as was seen during the recent

how to organize and how to get things
done, so I think theyre a great asset to
advocacy and the movement in general,
Volsky said.
The LGBT movement, Nasr said, has
a creativity and unique intersectionality
dierent from other groups that will
continue to energize the progressive
resistance to Trump.
At least as a person of color personally,
Ive seen the LGBTQ community be a
center for intersectionality at least in
the circles that I run in, so an additional
thing that were bringing is were bringing
everyone, Nasr said. Were not leaving
anyone behind. This is not white feminism.
This is not prim-and-proper LGBT
corporate funded work. This is grassroots,
everyones involved, intersectionality-
centered, queer-centered resistance.

Lizama said a nurse asked him to leave
the emergency room and wait in the
hospitals lobby and waiting area after he
became upset over what he thought was
a slow response by nurses and doctors to
examine his friend, who he thought was
having a heart attack.
After exchanging words with at least one
nurse, he said he obeyed the request to
leave the cubicle where his friend had been
taken and began walking toward what he
thought was the waiting room area.
As I was walking I didnt know where
the main waiting room was so I turned
around and he grabs me and throws
me to the ground, Lizama said. I hit my
head on the ground and theres blood all
over the emergency room.
Added Lizama: He was on my back
putting handcus on me and he couldnt
get them on right and I kept telling him its
hurting me, its hurting. He kept saying, you
know, quit resisting arrest. I said, Im not
resisting. Its my arm. Youre killing me. altercation with Ocer Woodyard.
To his shock and dismay, Lizama said
Woodyard told him he was placing him
under arrest for disorderly conduct,
menacing and resisting arrest.
Charging documents show he was
booked at the Lewes police station and
appeared before a magistrate at the
station through a closed circuit television
hookup on the night of the incident. He
was released on his own recognizance
and ordered not to return to Beebe
Healthcare or to come into contact with
any of the hospital employees involved in
the incident. He is scheduled to appear in
Sussex County Court of Common Pleas in
Georgetown, Del., on Feb. 27.
Woodyard states in an arrest adavit
that he and a hospital security guard
were called by nurses to the emergency
room after they reported Lizama became
disorderly. His adavit states that
nurses reported Lizama became even
more disorderly when he was asked to
leave and go to the hospital lobby.
As we were giving defendant
commands to go to the lobby, we began
to escort him by walking directly behind
him, Woodyard says in the adavit. At
that time defendant turned around and
lunged towards me in an aggressive
manner. Defendant was inches away from
my body. I instantly grabbed defendant
in an attempt to place him under arrest,
however he was pulling away which I then
took him to the ground with assistance
from Security Ocer Peacock, Woodyard
states in the adavit.
Lizama strongly disputes Woodyards
version of what happened. When asked
if he lunged toward Woodyard or said
or did something in a threatening or
aggressive manner, Lizama said no.
All I did was turn around to see which
way the lobby was, he said. And thats
when he grabbed me and then bear
hugged me and threw me to the ground
and I hit my head.
Before being taken to the police
station to be booked Lizama said he was
admitted to the emergency department
at the hospital for treatment of the
injuries he sustained at the hands of
Ocer Woodyard. After undergoing
X-rays to the head and upper body a
doctor told him he was suering from a
condition of excessive uid in the brain
called hydrocephalus, he told the Blade.
He provided the Blade with a copy of
his discharge papers from the hospital
showing the hydrocephalus diagnosis and
urging him to seek immediate treatment
from his personal physician.
He said one doctor told him the
hydrocephalus could be a pre-existing
condition that many older people
develop or it could have been brought on
by the head trauma he sustained in the

Health says. Acquired hydrocephalus
develops at the time of birth or at some
point afterward, the NIH report says.
This type of hydrocephalus can aect
individuals of all ages and may be caused

since referred him to a neurologist for
follow-up tests in connection with his head
injury and the hydrocephalus diagnosis.
He said he continues to experience leg
and back pain caused by being thrown to
the oor at the time of his arrest.
Lewes Police Chief Thomas Sell told
the Blade he interviewed Lizama for
nearly an hour as part of his investigation
of Lizamas complaint. He said he also
interviewed at least three witnesses from
the hospital who gave an account of
the incident pretty consistent with the
account given by Ocer Woodyard.
Sell, who was named Lewess chief
of police last June, said he personally
investigates citizen complaints against
ocers in a department that has a total
of just 13 ocers. He said his investigation
into Lizamas complaint was continuing
this week.
The Washington Blade has led a
Freedom of Information Act request with
the City of Lewes to determine whether
others have led complaints against
Woodyard during his nearly 10 years as
a Lewes police ocer. Lizama said people
he knows in Lewes have told him other
citizens have led complaints against
Woodyard in the past.

Andreasen and Krist were married in Washington in 2010 and had been
together since 1986. In addition to Krist, Andreasen is survived by a cousin,
Bruce Trumbo of Hayward, Calif.; a brother, Alan Andreasen of Oakland, Calif.;
and a nephew, Paul Connelly of Arlington Heights, Ill.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 9 from 6-8 p.m. at the
American Legion Hall (6900 Greenbelt Rd.) in Greenbelt, Md.

LGBs face disproportionate mental health issues

LONDON Gay and bi people are up to 12 times more likely to experience

mental health issues as straight people, according to the results of a new U.K. study.
Christian teaching that homosexuality is wrong is the cause, researchers found.
In the Name of Love: the Church, Exclusion and LGB Mental Health Issues
from the Oasis Foundation claims to demonstrate beyond reasonable doubt
that church goers and clergy are responsible for negative messages about same-
sex relationships in society, the media and political debate, Christian Today, a
U.K. religious outlet, reports.
More than half of LGB young people have self-harmed and 44 percent
have considered suicide, the report says. It cites a study of 27,000 LGB people
that concluded that sexual minorities were two to three times more likely to
report having a longstanding psychological or emotional problem than their
heterosexual counterparts.
Researchers said every major U.K. denomination apart from the United
Reformed Church discriminates against LGB people and says churchgoers
are responsible for the negativity. It points out that at least 74 percent of the
signatories to the campaign against gay marriage, the Coalition for Marriage, were
Christians, and at least 54 percent of the MPs who voted against gay marriage in
2013 were Christians. The report also analyzed 100 national media articles on the
topic of same-sex marriage and found 47 percent contained a negative comment;
of these, 91 percent were from a Christian leader or Christian commentator.
Another study released last week had similar ndings. Researchers said the
mental health challenges LGB people experience is not because of their sexual
orientation, but because of the stigma and discrimination they experience as a
result, Think Progress reports.
For the study, reported on by the Guardian, researchers at Australian National
University followed a cohort of about 5,000 LGB adults over eight years to track
their life experiences and their mental health. The results showed that there
were many risk factors that contributed to negative mental health outcomes,
but they werent directly related to individuals non-heterosexual orientations.
For example, survivors of sexual trauma and childhood trauma, rejection
in social interactions, not having family or social support and smoking all
contributed to the long-term risk for depression and anxiety. When LGB
people didnt experience these factorswhen they had positive support and
armation in their livestheir risk of long-term mental health problems was
no higher than for straight people.
In other words, LGB people do experience higher rates of mental health
problems, but thats only because they are more vulnerable to rejection and
stigmaand are more likely to turn to coping mechanisms as a result. As lead

wringing in big corporate media oces
lately over whether to boycott the annual
White House Correspondents Dinner.
So far, Vanity Fair and the New Yorker
have announced plans to skip the dinner
and posh after-parties. The Atlantics Da-
vid Frum and Robert Schlesinger of US
News & World Report have called on me-
dia outlets to boycott the dinner.
The Washington Blade will not be
among them.
Mainstream media helped create the
Trump phenomenon and now theyre ap-
palled by his (predictable) behavior and
want to boycott him? The time for that
was during the primaries, when he could
have been stopped. Back then, the net-
work morning shows and cable outlets
like CNN allowed Trump to phone in inter-
views almost daily to insult his Republican
opponents and rant about whatever trivia
was on his mind. Trump was good for rat-
ings and those shows frequently led with
Trumps outrageous late-night tweets. No
word yet on whether any of the major
cable networks will join the boycott.
Trumps attacks on the dishonest me-
dia and his rough treatment of reporters
at rallies are red meat to his base. Trump
probably doesnt believe half of what hes
said about the media but he knows it
plays with his supporters.
As usual, Trump is playing those media
outlets like a ddle a boycott of the Cor-
respondents Dinner and images of Trump

party. See, I told you they were against
me, hell rant. And you can be sure hell
show up. Trumps probably been rehears-
ing for this night since he attended the 2011
dinner and President Obama skewered
him. No one is prouder to put this birth
certicate matter to rest than the Donald,
Obama quipped then, and thats because
he can nally get back to focusing on the is-
sues that matter, like did we fake the moon
landing? Some have even speculated that
Obamas broadsides helped inspire Trump
to seek the presidency.
Before those boycotting mainstream
outlets get too impressed with them-
selves and their courageous stance
against the president, they should consid-
er the results of a new poll from Emerson
College. It shows more Americans think
Trump is truthful compared to the media;
48 percent described Trump as truthful,
while only 39 percent believe the media
are truthful.
Politics aside, the White House Cor-
respondents Dinner is a fundraiser; 18
scholarships were awarded to aspiring
journalists at last years event. The dinner
is also an opportunity to network with
sources and fellow journalists. Perhaps
its easier for the big corporate outlets to
skip a dinner as theyve been privileged
to be at the table since it began in 1921.
Networking opportunities like the dinner
are rare and valuable, especially for niche
outlets like the Blade. As the saying goes,
If youre not at the table, youre on the
menu. The Blade only received tickets
to the dinner a few years ago, the result
of countless hours of hard work by our
team. The Blades political reporter, Chris
Johnson, is in the White House nearly
each day; President Obama chose him to
ask one of the nal questions of his presi-
dency. In addition, Johnson shadows the
president one day per month and writes
the pool report. We take these responsi-
bilities seriously.
None of this is to suggest the media
should normalize Trumps administra-
tion. His attacks on underrepresented
groups are chilling. But attending the din-
ner and holding the president account-
able are not mutually exclusive endeav-
ors. We look forward to the dinner on
April 29.

DNC must build party in all 50 states
An effort to harness energy
of nationwide protests

The Democratic National Committee
needs to begin the work of building the
party in all 50 states and territories and
end what is in essence an open primary
for the position of chair and other ocers.
I compare it to an open primary because
there are only 447 DNC members who will
actually vote. All the others attending ral-
lies and forums dont vote and from what
I am seeing and hearing are having little
impact on who will be elected.
As the Washington Post reported, Sat-
urdays future forum was the last DNC
gathering before Feb.25, when Democrats

Its no secret that Washington has become
one of the most expensive U.S. cities in which
to live. D.C. now ranks alongside the other
costliest coastal-centric urban enclaves of
New York, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles
and Seattle.
It takes a wad of cash to accommodate
the accelerating expense of everything from
housing to cocktails.
The latest U.S. Census Bureau report pegs
the D.C. metro area, including Arlington and
Alexandria in neighboring Virginia, as having
will gather in Atlanta to elect new leaders.
Over six public debates and a stream of
TV interviews, the leading candidates had
found themselves in combative agree-
ment, arguing for a party that invests more
in every state, disagreeing only about who
should get them there. The meeting here
did not resolve that and showcased how
the elongated race has delayed the nal
reckoning over the partys 2016 primary
result and the test of whether Democrats
can channel the protests against President
Trump breaking out every weekend.
In the spirit of full disclosure I support
former Labor Secretary Tom Perez for
chair and Adam Parkhomenko for vice
chair. I like all the other candidates but
think Perez and Parkhomenko will make a
great team. The role of that team is to help
build 50 strong Democratic parties that
will do the work necessary in their states
to take back their legislatures, governor-
ships and elect Democrats in every con-
gressional district.
Its not the role of the party chair or other
ocers of the DNC to develop a new plat-
form in the next two years; we already have
one and it was approved at the last Demo-
cratic convention. It is the most progressive
one we have ever had; all the candidates
the highest median household income in the
country at a level 70 percent higher than the
national average.
You now need buckets of green to survive
in the bluest of cities, and that price pinch is
prompting primary professions in a range
of industries nationally to look at locating in
more money-modest Middle American cities.
Places with dynamic cultures and attractive
amenities but with more reasonable living
costs and less pressurized living conditions.
Middle-class millennials, households with
children or those aspiring to become par-
ents, and others desiring more manageable
and less expensive environments are begin-
ning to drive geographic diversication when
companies look to locate. Its a trend that is
increasingly anticipated to reduce the attrac-
tiveness of currently popular metropolises,
leaving behind disparate swaths of the ultra-
prosperous and the very poor.
Is D.C. destined to become the domain
of only the well-to-do? Will Washington turn
out to be a lifestyle destination for the rich,
exacerbating the existing gap between those
at the top and those at the bottom, while
hollowing out good-wage but locally middle-
income earners exiled to increasingly distant
suburban areas or even elsewhere?
D.C.s population has grown signicantly
support it. They alone wont change it but
will have the job of supporting state parties
in multiple ways. They will need to work to
keep the incredible public outcry against
Trump and the congressional Republicans
going; help state parties recruit and then
organize the millions of people who are hit-
ting the streets in protest to work for and
vote for Democratic candidates. They will
need to upgrade and share the technology
for low-dollar fundraising with state parties
to help pay for their eorts and support
their candidates at every level.
At times the chair of the party will be the
face of the party on television and at meet-
ings across the nation. But their respon-
sibility is not to usurp the spotlight from
our candidates; rather to help focus it on
them. It is our candidates who will need
to keep the marchers motivated and work
toward victories at the ballot box.
The chair must work to see we dont at-
tack Democratic candidates who can win
in a state simply because some people
within, or outside trying to inuence the
party, dont think they meet their criteria
for perfection.
A Democratic candidate for Senate or
House of Representatives in a deep red
state will not campaign on the same issues
over the past several years, once averaging
more than 1,000 new residents a month and
reversing years of declining residency to add
100,000 net new arrivals in only 15 years. It
was a dramatic comeback for a city that was
broken and busted less than two decades
ago, emerging from disastrous dysfunction
and a years-long federal takeover of the Dis-
tricts budget and operations.
The citys recovery was predicated on
attracting low-demand, high-return new
residents. People who would need fewer ser-
vices but contribute more in taxes, as well as
spur economic development and business
growth through enhanced levels of discre-
tionary spending.
Only 3 percent of those new households
came with kids in tow. Most of the rest nei-
ther needed, nor cared about, the dismal
state of local public education. Nearly half of
new households were childless millennials
under 35 seeking well-paying professional
careers and more than a quarter were over-
55 empty nesters with no kids at home but
possessing accumulated wealth and the as-
sets of prior long-term homeownership.
The rate of population growth has now
begun to stall, however, noticeably declin-
ing over the past year. The prole of those
moving to the nations capital has also

as one running in a reliably blue state. We
clearly need to stand by our principles of
equality, womens rights, LGBT rights, civil
rights, disability rights, fairness and decen-
cy. But how they campaign on local issues
may dier and we need to accept when
they win they vote for the Democratic
leadership in Congress giving us the abil-
ity to control committees and the agenda.
On Feb. 25 in Atlanta the 447 mem-
bers of the DNC will nally vote and this
quasi primary will be over. The real work
of building the party will begin. We will all
need to coalesce around the new chair
and ocers of the party. We must do this
if we are to defeat the eorts of the two
ultra-right conservative Stephens, Ban-
non and Miller, who are the puppeteers
pulling Donald Trumps strings. Trump
himself seems in over his head in the Oval
Oce and has taken to tweeting about his
daughters business at Nordstrom.
We must join hands and continue to
speak out, march, protest and resist under
the Democratic Party banner. We must do
this if we are to ght the vicious proposals
of the Trump administration and the Re-
publican Congress. We must do this if we
are to take back our Democracy and con-
tinue to be a beacon of hope for the world.

have also stopped moving to the city in the
numbers of recent times.
As the demographic of new residents be-
gins to skew even more toward wealthier
denizens and higher-earning workers able to
absorb the extraordinary cost of living in the
nations capital, aordability will continue to
be a primary factor in determining who ar-
rives, and who remains, in town.
The dilemma for elected ocials is
theres very little they can do to substan-
tially change these cost trajectories. Theyre
left to tinkering around the edges, albeit at
great expense, and the crude methods and
ineective tools they favor to manipulate
the marketplace produce nominal and of-
ten counterproductive results especially
at the bottom end.
Local politicians want to appear able to af-
fect aordability, both on the income and ex-
pense ends, but their ability to do so is much
more limited than theyll ever admit.
D.C. has become a place best suited for
those who can aord to fully enjoy its many
assets and amenities.
Over time, that will include fewer and few-
er of those here now.

LEGENDARY SUPREMES SINGER IN D.C. FOR BLUES ALLEY ENGAGEMENT
ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
Now that were 50 years removed from
the 1960s, theres enormous interest in
all things Motown.
Of course the labels popularity never
really went away but a urry of recent
events, from Broadways Motown: the
Musical to exhibits of the Supremes
legendary stage gowns to deluxe reissues
of many of the labels classic albums, point
to a Motown fever burning as hot as ever.
Supremes founding member Mary
Wilson the only singer to stay in the
group for its entire run is in the midst of
a four-night engagement at Washingtons
Blues Alley. She spoke with the Blade by
phone this week from her home in Las
Vegas on a wide spate of topics from her
recent dance hit, her stint on RuPauls
Drag Race, her oft-misunderstood
relationship with Diana Ross and more.
WASHINGTON BLADE: Tell us a little
of what you have planned for your Blues
Alley engagement, please.
MARY WILSON: Its a combination.
Last time I was there I believe I did my
straight sort-of jazz show, so this time I
will probably do some of the American
songbook and some Supremes songs
as well because I know a lot of people
would like to hear that. So it will be a
combination of all of that. I love doing
ballads, you know, love songs. Also its
Valentines week, so I have to honor that
because I believe in love.
BLADE: Is it taxing to do two shows
each night?
WILSON: I dont normally do two shows
so yeah, it really is. Its a little harder now
that Im 72, almost 73. Ill be 73 in March
so it can be a little taxing because Im used
to doing one. But I love being on stage. I
dont have a problem performing its just,
you know, the traveling and all that other
stu that makes it a little more dicult.
BLADE: On average, how much of the
year do you spend on the road?
WILSON: I usually do about three to
four gigs a month.
BLADE: It must have been gratifying to
have a dance hit a little over a year ago
when Time to Move On hit no. 23 on the
Billboard dance chart.
WILSON: It was great. I mean, I didnt
even realize that was going to happen.

young man out of the Imagination group,
Leee John. I think it was in 2002. Some
beautiful people out in the San Francisco
area, Sweet Feet Music, decided they
wanted to release it. I was like, Oh my
God, OK. So then we went in and did the
video and they put it out and it charted.
I was so surprised and elated that it
charted. It was beautiful and wonderful.
BLADE: How did Sweet Feet even know
about it?
WILSON: Well the Supremes fans are
just everywhere. I dont know. I think they
knew Leee John. The Imagination may
not have been as big here in the states,
but they were big in the UK so they knew
them.
BLADE: There was such a nice stash
of Supremes album reissues and deluxe
sets from Hip-O Select over several years
but they seem to have suddenly stopped
about two years ago. Do you know if any
more are planned?
WILSON: Im not sure. I know

instead of Motown but I know theyre
re-releasing our Go-Go album. I was
just at Universal when I was in New York
at the B.B. King club and I went and did
some interviews there and they played
me a lot of songs.
BLADE: The bonus disc for the I Hear
a Symphony expanded edition in 2012
had an entire 1966 Supremes concert
recorded at the Roostertail in Detroit.
Do you know how commonly Supremes
concerts were recorded?
WILSON: I really dont know. Things are
showing up now that I didnt even know
had been recorded because this was
before everyone had their cell phones
and this and that.
BLADE: So you had the Supremes
gowns in your possession all these years?
It must have cost a fortune to store them
all this time.
WILSON: This is true. Well yeah, I just
had them in storage. I have a pretty large
home here in Las Vegas so some I had in
the basement but then it got to be too

much so I had them in storage areas here.
My daughter says Im a hoarder but I say
what Im hoarding is worth a fortune. She
never really understood it. Some were
in boxes. One of the famous ones Im
having restored. It was beaded on chion
and just got so worn that the beads were
falling o, so Im having them repaired.
BLADE: Did you keep all the wigs too?
WILSON: Wigs not as much. They tend
to get really old and then theyre no good.
Pretty much everyone kept their own wigs
throughout the years so I never really had
a lot of those, but the gowns, yes. I do
have everyones gowns except the ones
that were stolen. There was a lot of stu
stored at Motown where we originally
stored them and when the building in
Detroit was torn down, a lot of people just
started taking stu pictures, masters,
gowns. Some have landed elsewhere.
There are a couple here in the Hard Rock
Cafe casino in Vegas, so theyve been all
over the place. I dont know how else
they ended up here and there other than
people just took them when the building
was torn down. I even got a few of them
back on eBay.
BLADE: There wasnt as much Motown
stu in the National Museum of African-
American History here in Washington as
I would have thought. Were you ever in
touch with its sta about having some
Supremes items there?
WILSON: You know what, Im a little
disappointed because I oered them
my gown exhibit to be displayed there
and I never heard back from them. I
made a presentation and everything. I
guess they had so many things, so many
artifacts, they couldnt take everything
so I understood, but I was disappointed.
When Im in D.C., Im going to try and go
see it. Im very thrilled its there. Im just
not happy the Supremes gowns arent
part of it.
BLADE: It seems insane to me that
the Supremes never won a Grammy in
the 60s. Was there some anti-Motown
sentiment in the industry at the time or
what?
WILSON: I really dont know. Its kind
of hurtful when I hear of so many people
having Grammys. We had 12 number

Clever play ponders
British monarchy
under Charles rule

Not long after the death of his ex-wife
Princess Diana, Prince Charles had it leaked
that hed be privately delighted were his
mother Queen Elizabeth II to step aside and
give him the crown. Well, the Queen was
not amused. The heir was duly scolded.
And after apologizing he retreated to the
wings while mother stayed center stage
where she remains today.
In Mike Bartletts King Charles III,
the British playwright muses on just
what might happen when Charles does
ascend to the throne. What might be a
bit of u is in fact a thought-provoking
and thoroughly entertaining work
employing the structure and language of
a Shakespearean history play with all the
drama, intrigue and comedy that entails.
Timely, too, in light of power shifts here
in Washington. Bartletts Olivier Award-
winning play is now at Shakespeare
Theatre Company in a rst-class
production faultlessly staged by David
CHRISTOPHER MCLINDEN as Prince William, IAN MERRILL PEAKES as Prime Minister Evans and

The Queen is dead and Prince Charles
(Robert Joy) is poised to be made king. But
before the coronation ceremony takes
place, Charles nds himself at odds with
Parliament and Prime Minister Evans (the
excellent Ian Merrill Peakes) over a new
bill that would limit the rights of the press
in invading personal privacy. Ironically
Charles whos been burned so badly by
Fleet Street over the years and despises
the paparazzi who played a role in the
death of his sons mother Princess Diana
is against the bill.
Noble, tragic and slightly dotty at
times, Charles digs in deeper, ultimately
dissolving Parliament which leads
to protests and all sorts of national
dysfunction. Throughout this time, he
retains the support of longtime advisor
(Tim Getman) who persuades him to
park a tank in front of the Palace and his
assertive wife Camilla (Jeanne Paulsen)
who stands strongly by her man,
amusingly reminding him that that he is
not alone.
But the younger generation
understands what the people want.

White), a clear-headed strategist who
understands the value of good fashion
and column inches, have dierent
thoughts on the matter than Charles.
In Shakespearean fashion, theres
a romantic subplot involving callow
Prince Harry (Harry Smith) and Jessica
(Michelle Beck) a young art student and
antimonarchist. After being introduced
by posh Cootsy (Jeerson Farber) at a
nightclub, the pair becomes inseparable.
Jessica shows the prince a new world lled
with protest, work and fun, prompting
him to toy with the idea of giving up his
title. In a wonderful scene, Prince Harry
goes anonymously into the London night
where he meets a kebab seller played
wonderfully by Rafael Jordon with whom
he speaks on love and life.
Of course this tale couldnt be complete
without Princess Diana (Chiara Motley).
Here shes more than a memory; shes a
black-veiled specter haunting the halls of
Buckingham Palace (an imposing edice
designed by Daniel Ostling and strikingly
lit by Lap Chi Chu). Here she plaintively
wails and calls out enigmatic predications
that both her late husband Charles and
eldest son William are both destined

become Englands greatest king.
Cast members bear a resemblance to
the royals they play, in particular Motley
as Diana and White as Kate, but especially
Paulsen who from Row N center is a dead
ringer for Camilla.
D.C. theatergoers were introduced to
Bartletts play Cock (also directed by
Muse) at Studio Theatre in the spring
of 2014. That play follows the John, a
youngish gay man who cant decide
whether to stay with what he knows
a stale relationship with another
man or pursue the new found joys of
heterosexual bliss with a woman.
King Charles III marvelously portrays
the Windsor familys place in both history
and pop culture. And though it sometimes
feels otherwise, Queen Elizabeth will not
live forever. And when she does go, the
play may lose its poignancy and punch.
But until then its a fabulous exercise in
when and what ifs.

The title character in Jewels Catch
One is Jewel Thais-Williams and Catch
One is the Catch One Disco, the world-
famous club she ran from 1973-2015.
During the economic downturn in 1972,
Jewel started to look for a recession-
proof business opportunity. She noticed
that the bar across the street from her
failing dress shop was for sale. Although
she faced serious obstacles (her lack of
bartending experience, an all-white male
clientele and a California law that banned
women from tending bar), Jewel raised
the money she needed to buy the club.
Despite frequent raids and excessive
police harassment, Jewels Catch One
Disco quickly became a popular hang-out
for members of Los Angeles black and LGBT
communities. Over time, the bar grew from
one room to a three-story entertainment
complex and became known as the
unocial Studio 54 of the West Coast.
But while Jewel served as host to
celebrities from Hollywood and the music
industry, she also became a national model
for how to ght discrimination and serve
the less fortunate. During the AIDS crisis,
the Catch served as a refuge for patrons
who had been rejected by their families and
churches. Jewel co-founded the Minority
AIDS Project and served as a board member
of the AIDS Project of Los Angeles to help
ensure that HIV/AIDS services reached the
entire LGBT community.
In July 2015, Jewel decided to close her
bar to focus on her other passions. Last
year, she was chosen as the grand marshall
of the L.A. Pride Parade in recognition of
her outstanding service to the community.
Currently, Jewel, who holds a degree in
oriental medicine, serves as the founder
and executive director of the Village Health
org), a complementary medical clinic that

Filmmaker C. Fitz met Jewel when she
was asked to lm a three-minute tribute WITHOUT

premiered last June at the Provincetown TRYING
Film Festival. A television and marketing
veteran, Fitz is best known for serving as the

improvement series Knock First.
In the movie, which has been getting
rave reviews at lm festivals across the
country, Fitz combines a rich trove of
archival footage with contemporary
footage of Jewel at the bar and out in
the community. Narrated by acclaimed
actress CCH Pounder (NCIS New Orleans
and Sons of Anarchy), the documentary
also features interviews with the patrons
of the bar and exclusive interviews with
some of Jewels celebrity guests and
performers, including Rep. Maxine Waters
(D, Calif.), Jenifer Lewis, Sharon Stone,

Groundbreaking 1991 lm for a nal picnic before they begin

remastered and re-released

Timing is everything. Just ask Tim Lanza,
vice president and archivist of the Cohen Film
Collection. Last spring, he and his team were
working on the restoration of Julie Dashs
ground-breaking 1991 lm Daughters of
the Dust for its 25th anniversary.
Then Beyonc suddenly dropped
her visual album Lemonade, which
included many visual references to
Dashs groundbreaking lm, and interest
in the restoration project soared. The
anticipated home video release grew into
a limited theatrical release, the rst since
the lm premiered in theaters in 1992.
There was a denite Beyonc bump,
the journey. The emotional gathering
includes Nanas granddaughter Yellow
Mary (Barbara O) and her lover Trula
(Trula Hoosier) who visit the family on
their journey to Nova Scotia. Because
of her sexuality and her past as a sex
worker, Yellow Mary is initially rejected by
some of her family members.
The unconventional lm quickly
became a cult classic and an inspiration
to a generation of lmmakers.
Unfortunately, the lm was neglected by
its original distributor.
When Lanza became aware that
the lmmaker was looking for a new
distributor, he leapt at the chance. He
discovered that the sta at the UCLA
Film and Television Archive had rescued
the original lm elements from a lab
by paying a decades-old bill and had

Lanza says. Its exciting that the lm is
now nding both old and new audiences.
Lanza says Daughters was a visionary
lm.
There was nothing like it when it came
out and there hasnt been a lot like it
since. I think thats also why there was
such a strong reaction to Lemonade.
Daughters of the Dust was the rst
feature directed by an African-American
woman to receive a general theatrical
release. Inspired by the history of Dashs
own family, the movie takes place at
the turn of the 20th century on Dawtuh
(Daughter) island, one of the small barrier
islands along the coast of South Carolina
and Georgia. The inhabitants of these
islands, descendants of the African slaves
who were forced to work the indigo and
rice plantations, have remained isolated
from the mainland and speak a distinct
language called Gullah or Geechee.
The Peazants, a family with deep
roots on the island, are at a crossroads.
Led by Haagar (Kaycee Moore), the
younger generation want to join the
Great Migration and move north. The
older generation, led by Nana (Cora Lee
Day), is determined to stay on the island.

A ve-day Soupergirl cleanse is surprisingly tasty and nourishing.
Soupergirl cleanse is more
nourishing than youd think
By KRISTEN HARTKE
Im not a dieter. I cook and eat for
a living, which means Im constantly
surrounded by food that I might not
always choose for myself, and I also spend
a lot of time writing about food, creating
more sedentary hours than Id like.
On the plus side, Im a vegetarian, so
most of my diet is entirely plant-based
and fairly lean, and I dont own a car, so I
walk a lot. And on the days when theres
more chocolate than chard on my plate,
there are stretchy pants in the closet a
food writers best friend.
So, when I was asked to try Soupergirls
ve-day soup cleanse, I was alternately
intrigued and intimidated. Like I said, I
dont do diets, but, on the other hand, I do
like soup. In a few days a box arrived with
20 portions of soup and, if youve never
had 20 16-ounce portions of soup show
up at your front door, let me assure you:
its a lot of soup.
If youre not familiar with Soupergirl,
its the brainchild of Sara Polon, a self-
described former stand-up comedienne
turned soup-maker, who teamed up
with her mom Marilyn to create dozens
of dierent soup recipes all vegan
from Creamy Carrot, made with coconut
milk, to a cumin-spiked West African
Peanut Stew. With two locations in D.C.
(314 Carroll St. N.W. and 1829 M St. N.W.)
and available via delivery and in other
retail outlets like Whole Foods and Glens
Garden Market, Soupergirl soups have
become a xture in the D.C. quick meal
landscape. But theres a big dierence
between grabbing soup for lunch and
eating it four times a day for a week.
You are expected to eat soup for
breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner. Black
Bean Sweet Potato Chili is not something I
generally choose to eat for breakfast and
I rarely eat breakfast anyway, so I knew
right away that this diet was going to be
more of a challenge than I had expected.
Soupergirls soup cleanse is not,
however, really a diet. In fact, Sara Polon
is correct in referring to it as more of a
reset. The concept is based on eating
the heaviest, most protein-rich soup early
in the day, with each successive soup
becoming lighter in ber until you end
with a silky smooth soup in the evening. I
even found myself feeling slightly peckish
the rst night, to which Polon says, Going
to sleep a bit hungry allows your body to
rest and ensures youll be hungry for your
morning soup.
Scheduling my cleanse for January
seemed like a good idea, after a holiday
season lled with overindulgence, and
its perfect soup-eating weather anyway.
I didnt have a specic weight loss goal
in mind because I must confess that the
only scale I own is a kitchen scale so that
I can do things like measure the perfect
amount of our to make fresh scones to
go with, well, soup.
However, I eschewed the scones
during this cleanse. Day 1 began with
the aforementioned Black Bean Sweet
Potato Chili, followed by Greek Red Lentil
for lunch, Thai Butternut Squash for an
afternoon snack, and Ginger Roasted
Pumpkin Apple for dinner. Not only was it
a lot of soup, it was a lot of food in general,
because the cleanse allows for snacks,
such as hummus and crudit, nuts, fruit
and avocado toast. Wine, coee and
tea are even allowed in moderation and
because, Polon says, life is short. There
are also two o days during the week,
when the advice is to stick to minimally
processed, plant-based foods, such as
beans, quinoa, fresh vegetables and
oatmeal. So, not only is it a lot of soup,

its also, frankly, a lot of food. You will not
go hungry.
Confession number two: By the
second day, I didnt eat all four soups,
skipping breakfast entirely and eating the
breakfast soup Barley Chickpea Kale,
my favorite for lunch. By day three, I
was down to two soups a day, because,
after a hearty soup at noon and a snack
mid-afternoon, followed by a light soup in
the early evening, I was actually full.
Here in the United States, we have
become ingrained with the idea of eating
big meals, often both in the morning
and evening, while many other countries
around the world are much more focused

The guy who bags your groceries might
have stock tips for you. A co-worker
introduces you to your next best friend.
You nd a great restaurant from your
stylist, a new job from a former classmate
or your neighbor gives you gardening
advice. Its all about who you know or, as
in the new book The Art of the Aair
by Catherine Lacy and Forsyth Harmon,
its who youve dallied with.
Somehow, in some way, the people
you meet leave ngerprints on your life.
A laugh youll never forget, a bon mot
youll quote or even an attitude can be a
memorable springboard for an idea.
That goes doubly for creative types,
for whom romantic (or platonic)
relationships, their carnage of aairs
could lead to countless works of art.
These unions, whether legal or otherwise,
also left a tangle of threads between
many artists and writers.
Essayist and editor Edmund Wilson,
for instance, helped launch the career of
Anas Nin, who later wrote erotica. Nin
was unapologetic about her aairs,
of which there were many, including a
banker, probably a homosexual, and
novelist/playwright Gore Vidal, who
himself had a short aair with writer
James Baldwin, who called another man
the love of his life.

both collaborated professionally with
Grammy-winner Ella Fitzgerald, but it
was Marilyn Monroe who helped boost
Fitzgeralds career. Monroe talked the
owner of an L.A. nightclub into booking
the singer and she attended each of
Fitzgeralds performances there. Monroe,
of course, had her share of aairs, too, as
well as a friendship with Truman Capote,
who was repeatedly insulted by none
other than Tennessee Williams.

Forsyth Harmon play a sort of Six Degrees 50th Anniversary
of Kevin Bacon in their book except, not
surprisingly, Bacon isnt here. Instead, Season
readers are taken back many decades to
look at the dalliances and relationships of
artists and stars of the early 20th century,
and because very few contemporary CAMERON
artists grace these pages, there may be
many times when you wont recognize the CARPENTER
people among the threads. That can be
remedied through inference, but a better
and the International
explanation (at least for some artists) Touring Organ
might have been nice, as would an index.
Still, I liked the tidbits in this book, Fri, Mar 3, 8pm
the mini-factlets between ties and the
obvious delight that author and artist Strathmore
lend to the love aairs they so diligently Extravagantly talented
discovered. Light, gossipy and a little
scandalous, The Art of the Aair shows fantastical and memorable
that its who you know thats important New York Times
and I know youll like it.

one records but did not ever receive a
Grammy. Three of our singles, much
later, were inducted into the Grammy
Hall of Fame, but that was all done after
the fact. So yeah, Im a little pissed on it.
BLADE: There are some Supremes
B-sides like Going Down for the Third
Time that sound to me like they could
have been hits. Or some minor hits like
Some Things You Never Get Used To
seem like they should have charted
higher. Are there any Supremes tracks
you think could have been hits but werent
released as singles or had the potential to
chart higher than they did?
WILSON: Ive never been one to know
much about whats a hit and whats not
a hit. I do think some of the songs were
really quite good but for them to have
been hits, I dont really know. There were
certainly a lot I really liked.
BLADE: So many elaborate sculptures
and paintings have been done of the
Supremes over the years. Which are your
favorites?
WILSON: I receive so many beautiful
pieces of art that people have done on us.
One person whos passed now, his name
was Ted LeMaster did quite a few lovely
paintings. I think I have four of them
and theyre just absolutely gorgeous. Im
working on a coee table book of the
Supremes gowns so I should include
some of those as well. Theres another
guy and, oh gee, I may have to get you
his name later because its not coming to
me o the top of my head, but he does
these Supremes dolls and they are just
beautiful. There are lots of artists out
there and they send things to me all the
time. I have them all over my place here.
BLADE: How did you enjoy being a
guest judge on RuPauls Drag Race?
WILSON: It was great. He was just
wonderful. You know, gorgeous. Hes a
big Diana Ross fan so it was almost like
seeing Diane in a way because he kind
of does her thing. He looks great and
all that stu and it was loads of fun. I
met so many wonderful, or I should say
gorgeous, so many gorgeous people.
BLADE: The Frontier shows, the last
with Miss Ross, that became the Farewell
album in 1970 was that set list pretty
much the Supremes show in 1969 or was
some of the stu you did there, like the
Aquarius medley with all the audience
sing-alongs, was that maybe just worked
up for that engagement knowing so many
celebrities would be present?
WILSON: No, that was pretty much
our normal show we toured with that
year. Everything we did there, wed pretty
much been touring with, yes.
BLADE: Do you keep in touch often
with (former Supremes) Cindy Birdsong
and/or (Ross replacement) Jean Terrell?
WILSON: Yes. Last year we had the
gown exhibit at the Grammy museum
and I invited all the ladies there for that.
Jean Terrell came, Scherrie Payne was
there and Susaye Greene. I keep up with
Cindy but I dont see her as often as I want
since shes in L.A. and Im in Vegas but I
spend a lot of time in L.A. so I see her
when Im there.
BLADE: Is she well?
WILSON: I dont want to get too much
into her personal things. Shes a little
older and shes had some health issues.
BLADE: Do you ever hear from
(founding Supreme) Florence Ballards
three daughters? (Ballard left the group
in 1967 and died in 1976.)
WILSON: Yes, whenever Im in Detroit,
they always come out and we talk on the
phone a lot actually. So yeah, I do keep
up well, I should say they keep up with
me, lets put it that way.
BLADE: Did you enjoy Motown: the
Musical?
WILSON: I loved it. I thought it was
wonderful. Obviously it was Berry Gordys
perception of what was going on and
everybody, you know, thereve been all
these books, everybody has their own
way of looking at it, but its all true. Its
just dierent perceptions from dierent
people. The musical is more Berrys
perspective so hes obviously looking
from the top down. We were looking from
down to up, but its just the way dierent
people perceived it. But I absolutely loved
it. In fact just a week or so ago it opened
in L.A. and I ew out there and attended
the opening. I was also at the London
opening and, of course, the New York
opening was also great.
BLADE: It looked like there was a lot
of warmth between you and Berry and
Diana at the opening. Would you say
feelings have mellowed over the years?
WILSON: There always was. Some
things that are brought out further tend
to be the more negative things. Things
that were really great are not broadcast
as much so people tend to think there was
a lot more dislike there but thats just not
true. We were all very, very close. There
were always things going on like maybe
you didnt like this that didnt mean that
the love was not there. It always was. But
we were all dierent, we all had our own
opinions so a lot of times when you speak
out, people say, Oh my God, theyre
having a ght, they hate each other, and
thats just not true. Its just dierent likes
and dislikes.
BLADE: Ive read a lot of the books
your books, Randy Taraborrellis books. It
always seems like a handful of incidents
get told and retold. When you think of all
the hours you and Florence and Diana
obviously spent together rehearsing,
traveling and recording, there had to
have been more peace than tension or
youd never have gotten anything done.
WILSON: Well thats what Im saying.
Some of the things that were brought
out and broadcast as if they were major,
major things, its just not true. People think
theres some big feud between Diane and
I and there really is not. Its just that shes
gone her way and Ive done my thing so
no, were not close, but thats just because
over the last 50-some years, our lives
have gone in several dierent directions.
I love her as much as I love Flo. People
tend to think I love Flo more because they
view it as we worked together more on
the choreography, on the harmony. We
were always together. And now Florence
is not here to protect herself, so I dont
talk about her a lot because of that. But I
dont love Flo anymore than I love Diane. I
love them both as much as I love my own
sister.
BLADE: Did you see Mary Wells much
in her later years? Do you think she
regretted leaving Motown so early?
WILSON: I saw Mary up to the very
end of her life. I actually worked with her
trying to do whatever we could in terms
of her cancer bout. I dont know I never
talked to her about that so I really dont
know.
BLADE: Its staggering to me the
amount of material the Supremes
recorded in the 60s. You must have been
in the studio constantly.
WILSON: Well, we were also on the
road a lot, too. But yes, what happened
sometimes is we would y into Detroit,
record a few songs and then y right out.
So yes, we did record a lot of songs.
BLADE: Now that so many have been
released on these expanded editions, Im
sure there are some you have no memory
of, right?
WILSON: Not just songs. Sometimes
I see pictures that I cant remember and
yet there I am in the picture. Its just
because there were so, so many. There
really were.
BLADE: So much has been made of
(Motown session singers) the Andantes
singing with Diana on Supremes studio

group. But you and Cindy obviously still
had to learn the parts for TV and concerts.
If that was seen as some sort of time-
saving device, what was the rationale?
WILSON: There was a lot going on
then. Diane was already starting to record
songs for her departure, so a lot of times,
it was for that reason. But then theyd
decide to use some of the recordings on
Supremes albums even though we hadnt
been there. That happened a lot. Other
times we were out rehearsing with Jean
Terrell for the new group, so it was almost
like being in two groups there for a while.
Cindy was also still fairly new in the group
so there wasnt a lot of cohesiveness those
last couple years. And the producers, you
know, its like this with a lot of my friends
who are actors and actresses, a lot of
times its the producers and writers who
make these kinds of decisions and youre
not even in on the decision making in the
group. And then of course, Motown was
moving to L.A. so there was a lot of stu
going an and we were not really looked
upon as a group anymore because
obviously Diane was leaving and all. It had
to do with a lot of that stu.
BLADE: You and Florence always had
such great harmony and obviously it was
before the days of Auto-Tune and all the
studio bells and whistles they have now.
Did you have to learn to sing harmony
or was it something you were able to do
naturally?
WILSON: Well it wasnt just me and Flo,
it was me, Flo and Diane and we all sang
harmony together a lot. That was really
our style naturally. Thats what you did
back in those days, you sang. You didnt
have anything else to rely on. We didnt
even need music. We did shows in the
early years without music or maybe just
with a guitarist, Marvin Tarplin. So no, it
was very natural and we didnt have any
help in that department. Actually the
Supremes were a very harmonic group
in terms of our style, thats what we did.
I kind of hated later on when we lost that
because it was something wed been very
good at. Its hard to harmonize with just
two people. Before when we had Diane
and (early members) Betty (McGlown)
and Barbara (Martin), with four people,
you know, you could do great harmony.
We kind of lost that style when we found
the hits. They were great, of course, but
we lost something we were good at.

but each feels a whole lot larger once you
slip inside.

ride. But the Autobahn is the top-of-the-
line model, so all the bells and whistles
are here: keyless ignition/entry, xenon
headlights, sunroof, 10-way drivers seat
and more. Safety gear includes collision
warning, automatic braking, blind-spot

racy rear spoiler is a nice touch, as is

down chic, BMW also has been upping
its eco cred. The latest example: the
330e iPerformance sedan, a plug-in
hybrid combining a four-cylinder turbo
engine with an electric motor. While the
battery-only range is 22 miles, the nav
system determines how and when to use
the electric motor on your route. A full
charge takes up to seven hours using a
conventional home outlet (or two-and-
a-half hours using a $1,100 fast charger
from BMW). Except for the charging port
near the front of the car, this plug-in
has the same understated elegance as
the rest of the 3 Series lineup. Ditto the
rened interior, with its clean, modish
dash and raised infotainment system.
And the 330e drives well, too, with
impressive acceleration and a steering
system that seems to anticipate your next
move. Perhaps the biggest downside is
the price, which can quickly top $60,000
depending on options. Still, few cars are
designed so well you dont mind getting
stuck in trac.

in the metropolitan Washington area.
My hypothesis was that, with the
change in administration (even if the same
party stayed in power), there would be a
fair number of people moving out of the
region, and a fair number moving in. With
that thought in mind, I decided it would
be interesting to see what the impact had
been of previous election year cycles in
comparison to the normally slow market
behavior in the late and early winter quar-
