OKI C941/C931 Plugins

1 Introduction
ThismanualdescribestheOKIpluginforC941/C931colorLEDprinters.Theseareahighspeed,
highquality,colorandmonochrome,A3,A4,A5andA6printerscapableofprintingontoheavy
materials.

1.1 Summary of plugin features

2 System requirements
TooperatecorrectlytheOKIC941/C931pluginsrequirethefollowingsystemresources:
HarlequinMultiRIPv10orlater.
Connectioninterface:
EthernetsupportingTCP/IP.
Note: OKIC941/C931printerssupportconnectionsusingEthernet(100BT).Howevertheplugins
willnotdrivetheprinterdirectly.ThepluginwritestotheWindowsprintspoolersubsystem,which
inturncommunicateswiththeprinter.ThepluginsupportsbothFileandWindowsSpooleroutput.

2.1 Windows
ThesearetheminimumplatformrequirementsforaWindowsoperatingsystem.SomeRIPfeatures
willworkbetterwithamorepowerfulsystem.
Note: ApluginissupportedonthesameplatformastheHarlequinMultiRIPrelease.

3 Installing the plugin

UsethefollowingmethodtoinstalleithertheOKIC931orOKIC941plugin:
1. EnsuretheMultiRIPisnotrunning.
2. ExtractthefileOKIC931.zip(forexample).
3. AfoldercalledOKIC931pluginiscreated.Openthisfolderandcopyandpastetheenclosed
OKIC931folderintotheRIPs...\SW\Devicesfolder.

4. RestarttheMultiRIPandenablethepluginasdescribedinEnablingpluginsintheHarlequin
MultiRIPonpage5.
5. AfterinstallingthepluginstarttheHarlequinMultiRIP.
IfyouhavecorrectlyinstalledthepluginthefollowingmessagewillappearintheRIPmonitor
whenyounextstartuptheRIP:

3.1 Installing the printer driver

TheprimarycommunicationmethodbetweentheRIPandtheprinterisviatheWindowsSpooler.To
usethismethod,connecttheprintertoyournetworkandaddtheOKIC941/C931printerusingthe
standardWindowsAddaprinterwizard.WhenaddingtheprintermakesurethatOKIC931(for
example)isincludedaspartoftheprintersname.

3.2 Location of plugin folders

Table 1showsthecorrectHarlequinMultiRIPinstallationfoldersfortheOKIC941/C931plugin.This
informationisprovidedforreferenceonly.UnlessinstructedbyTechnicalSupport,youshouldnot

movethesefoldersordeleteinformationcontainedinthemorthepluginsmayceasetofunction
correctly.

3.3 Enabling plugins in the Harlequin MultiRIP

IfyouareusingSentinelLDKsecurityyoumayberequiredtouseanewproductkey.Forinformation
onhowtousetheSentinelLDKseetheLDKHMRFAQdocument.
WhenusingHLSsecurity,afterinstallingthepluginfilesintoyourRIP,youmustenabletheminthe
ConfigureRIPExtrasdialogbeforetheycanbeused.TodothisyouwillneedyourOKIC941/C931
pluginpassword,assuppliedtoyou,aswellaspasswordsfortheColorProcolormanagementand
anyotheroptionswhichmayberequired.
IfyouareusingaHarlequinMultiRIPwithLDKsecurityyoucantransitionfromHLStoLDKby
requestingGlobalGraphicstogenerateanLDKlicensethatisacloneofthefeaturesenabledinthe
olderHLSlicense,includingthedongledetailsandallpasswordsforlayeredoptions,localizations,
pluginsandsoonthatweresecuredusingHLS.
Note: ExistingHLSpasswordsforyourpluginswillnotworkinanLDKlicensedRIP.
IftheOKI C931orOKI C941optiondoesnotappearasanoptionintheDevicelistinthePageSetup
dialogbox,followthisprocedure.
Whenrequestingthepasswordfromyoursupplieryoumaybeaskedtogivetheserialnumberofyour
RIP.TheRIPdisplaysthisnumberinthemainHarlequinMultiRIPwindowwhenstartingup,inthe
form:

Youmustalsotellyoursuppliertheplatformforwhichyourequirethepassword.Theplatformisthe
combinationofoperatingsystemandprocessortype.Forexample,youmightspecifyWindows7,and
Intelprocessor.ForHLSsecuredRIPs:
1. Onceyouhaveapassword,usetheFile > Configure RIPmenuoptiontodisplaytheConfigureRIP
dialogbox.
2. ClicktheExtrasbuttonintheConfigureRIPdialogboxtodisplaytheExtrasdialogbox.
3. SelecttheentryforOKI,OKIC931,andclickAdd.
4. Enterthepasswordforthisoptiongiventoyoubyyoursupplier,andclickOK.
5. ClickOKineachoftheExtrasandConfigureRIPdialogboxes.
Oncethepluginisinstalledfully,youcanselectitintheDevicelistinthePageSetupdialogboxand
thenclickConfigure DevicetoseetheconfigurationdialogboxshowninFigure 4.
YoucannowcreatepagesetupswhichusetheC941/C931devicetoprocessjobsfortheC931orC941
printer,asdescribedinthenextsection.
ForLDKsecuredRIPs:
1. RequestanewProductKeyfromyoursupplier.
2. Goto\ldk\utilswithintheRIPinstallationdirectoryanddoubleclickldktool.exe.Thisdisplays
theLDKTool.

3. SelectUpdate License.
4. SelectUpdate for this computer.
5. SelectHaveinternetaccess.
6. TheKeyIDpopupmenuwillbeprepopulatedwiththeProtectionKeyID(s)alreadyinstalled
ontheRIPcomputer.Iftherearemorethanoneverifythatthecorrectoneisselectedforthe
licensethatistobeextended,thenclickUpdate.
7. CopyandpasteorcarefullyentertheProductKeyfortheProtectionKeyUpdateintotheProduct
Keyfield.
8. SelectActivate.AnAreyousure...messageappears.
9. ClickYestocontinue.Thisassignsyourproductstothemachine.
10. WhencompletedanActivationsuccessfulmessageappears.

4 Creating a page setup

ThissectiondescribeshowtocreateapagesetupinyourRIPthatprocessesjobsfortheC931printer.
TheprocessfortheC941isthesameexceptyouselecttheOKIC941device.
1. SelectHarlequin MultiRIP > Page Setup ManagertoopenthePageSetupManager(Figure 1).

2. InthePageSetupManager,clickNewtocreateanewpagesetuporselectanexistingpagesetup
andclickEdittoopentheNew/EditPageSetupdialog(Figure 2).

3. Enterinformationinthefieldsasfollows:
Device:SelecttheOKIC931device.
Note: WhenyouselecttheOKIC931orOKIC941deviceyouwillnoticetheresolutioncontrols
changetoasingledropdownmenuallowingselectionofonlythoseresolutionssupportedbythe
device.
Note: ForCMYKdevicestheProofReadyoptionwillbeactivatedonlyafteranICCprofilehasbeen
installedandconfigured.FormoreinformationseeInstallingtheICCprofileinyourRIPonpage
21.
Resolution:Chooseyourdesiredresolutionsettings.
Style:FortheC931orC941deviceCMYK Compositeisselected.Thiscanbeeditedtousea
differenthalftonescreen.
Color:Thissettingisautomaticallychosentosuittheselectedprofile.However,ifyouwish
touseyourowncolorprofile,chooseitinsteadfromthelist.See,Creatingcolorsetupson
page21foradescriptionofhowtocreateyourowncolorsetups.
Calibration:Setthisto(None).Calibrationisperformedbytheprinterfortheselectedmedia.
4. ClickConfigure device...toopentheConfigureDevicedialog,whichallowsyoutospecifyoutput
optionsfortheselecteddevice.Forexample,itallowsyoutospecifytheoutputmethod(file,net
work,includingaprintserver),mediatype,duplexingandfinishingoptions.Formoreinforma
tionseeTheConfigureDevicedialogonpage10.

5. ClickPage Layoutandchooseoneofthepapersizesinstalledintheprinter.IfthejobisanEPSfile,
orthejobdoesnotcontainpagesizeinformation(mostjobsdo),setthepagesizetoo.
Ifitisnecessarytodoso,youcanadjustthepositioningoftheoutputonthemediabyedit
ingthepagemarginvalues.See,Pagelayoutoptionsonpage8fordetails.
6. ClickSave Asandchooseanappropriatenameforyournewpagesetup.
7. ClickOKtoclosethePageSetupManager.
Thepagesetuphasnowbeencreatedandmaybeusedtoprocessjobs.Remembertocreatepageset
upsforeachtypeofpaperthatyouuseinyourprinter.

4.1 Page layout options

TheoptionsinPageLayoutareusedtospecifyyourmediasizeandpagesizewhennotdefinedinthe
jobitself.Pagesizereferstotheframeintowhichthejobisprinted;mediasizereferstothesizeof
thepaperinstalledintheprinter.Topreventclippingofyourprint,thepagesizemustnotexceedthe
mediasize.

InmostjobsthepagesizehasbeendefinedinthepagedesignandembeddedinthePDForPostScript
languagefile.ThepagesizeinPageLayouthasnoeffectonthistypeofjob.InEPSfiles,orotherjobs
wherepagesizeisnotdefined,youmustselectthecorrectpagesizefromthoselistedinPageLayout.
Whenchangingthemarginsbecarefulnottoincreasethemarginsbeyondthelimitofthemedia.Set
tingavalueforthebottommarginbeyondthemediasizeonsheetfeddeviceswillresultinalossof
printablespaceonthemedia.

5 Configuring Harlequin MultiRIP devices

TheConfigureDevicewindowallowsyoutochoosetheoutputfolder,namingconventions,media
andfinishingoptions.

5.1 The Configure Device dialog

ThefollowingdeviceconfigurationoptionsareavailablefromtheConfigureDevicemenu:

TheprimarycommunicationmethodisviatheWindowsSpooler.Thisisrepresentedbyprefixing
SPL:totheprintersnameintheOutputtomenuintheConfigureDevicedialog.Tousethis
method,connecttheprintertoyourcomputerviaTCP/IPandaddtheC931orC941printerusingthe
standardWindowsAddaprinterwizard.WhenaddingtheprintermakesurethatOKIC931or
OKIC941isincludedaspartoftheprintersname.
Selecttheoutputmethodfromthefollowingchoices:

File (Defaultoption).OutputissavedtothelocationspecifiedintheFile
outputoption,andnamedaccordingtothesettingsinFile template.
Outputtofileisalwaysdoneasawholejob,notasindividualpages.
Therefore,ifanerroroccursorthejobisaborted,anyunprocessed
pagesinthejobarediscarded,whetherornottheycanberendered.

SPL TheSPLoptionistheprimarymethodforoutputtingtotheprinter.Itis
availableonlyafterinstallingthedevicedriverviatheWindowsAdda
printerwizard.
OutputtoWindowsSpoolerisalwaysdoneasawholejob,notasindi
vidualpages.Therefore,ifanerroroccursorthejobisaborted,any
pagesremaininginthejobarediscarded,whetherornottheycanbe
rendered.Wherepossible,theWindowsSpoolerjobsubmissionwill
alsobeaborted.

5.1.2 File output

TheoptionsinthissectionallowyoutospecifytheoutputlocationwhenFileisselectedastheoutput
method.Ifyoudonotchangethelocation,outputisplacedinRIP folder\SW\.

File template
Thisoptionallowsyoutousetagstoconstructthenameoftheoutputfile.Forexample,
<dos>out<5unique><dot>hpfproducesout00001.hpf,out00002.hpf.Formoreinformationsee
Outputfilenamingonpage13andTable 4,page16foracompletelistofpermittedtags.

5.1.3 Media
TheMediaoptionsallowyoutochoosetheMediasize,tray,typeandweight.

Media size
Thisoptionallowsyoutospecifythesizeofyourpage.Therearefouroptions.

Page size specified in job:Theprintedpagewillhavethesamesizeandorientation,aswas

specifiedinthejob.
Media size from Page Layout: ThisisusedinconjunctionwiththeFeededgeselectionandthe
MediaselectedinthePageLayout.
If,forexample,youhavetheprintertrayloadedwithLetterpaperwithaLongEdgeorienta
tion,andselectLetterfromthePageLayoutdialog,youmustselectLong EdgefortheFeed edge
option.IfthejobisLettersize,theRIPwillpresentittotheprinterrotatedby90degreessothatit
fitsthepaper.
IfthejobisLetterLandscaped,theRIPwillnotrotateitbutwill,again,presentittotheprinterso
thatitfitsthepaperinthetray.
Shrink to Media size from Page Layout:ThisworksinthesamewayasMedia size from
Page Layout,butwillshrinkanyjobthatisbiggerthanthepapersothatitfitsontothepaper.

Media size & Feed edge from Page Layout:ThisoptionignorestheFeededgesettingandwill

producearasterwhichisthesamesizeasthejobandwithaMediasizeasselectedfromthePage
Layoutoption.Thismeansthatif,asintheexampleabove,youhaveloadedthetraywithLet
terpaperwithaLongEdgeorientationandyouareprintingajobthatisLetterportrait,you
mustremembertorotatethejobinthePageSetupandremembertoselectLetter LEFfromthe
PageLayoutMediaSizeselection.

Media tray
ThisoptionallowsyoutochooseaspecifictrayortouseAuto selectwhichautomaticallyselects
thepapersourcethatcontainsthepapersizespecifiedintheDeviceConfigurationdialogbox.If
thespecifiedpapersizeisunavailableanappropriatealternativeischosenautomatically.

Media type
TheMediatypeoptionliststheavailablemediatypes:Bond,Cardstock,Glossyandsoon.When
Printer Setting isselectedthevaluessetintheprinterareused.

Media weight
SelecttheweightofthemediasetinMediatype:Heavy,Light,Mediumandsoon.WhenPrinter
Setting isselectedthevaluessetintheprinterareused.

Iftheprinterdetectsamediaweightwhichisdifferentfromthatselectedamessageisdisplayed.

5.1.4 Spot Color

TheseoptionsareonlyavailablefortheOKIC941printer.

Spot color
TheOKIC941hastheoptionforthespotcolortobeWhiteorClear,suchasaclearvarnish.
EnsurethattheSpot colorWhiteorClearselectioncorrespondstothetonerthatisloadedonthe
printer.

Useage methods
Select either Do not use or Use spot color in job.WhenUse spot color in job isselectedthe
jobmustspecifyaspotcolorinadditiontothenormalCMYKcolors.
IfUse spot color in jobisselectedandthereisnospotcolordefinedinthejob,thecommands
tousethetonerwillnotbesenttotheprinter.

Order of superposition
YoucanchoosetopositionthespotcolorontopoftheCMYKcolor(Printing toner on the
color),orbeneaththeCMYKcolor(Printing toner under the color).

5.1.5 Output
Theoptionsinthissectiondeterminetheorientationandpositionoftheoutput.

Autorotate
ThisoptionisonlyavailablefortheOKIC931.
WhenthisischeckedandtheMediasizeissetto:Media size from Page LayoutorShrink to
Media size from Page Layout,theimageautorotatessothatitfitsonthepaperselectedinthe
PageLayout.TheFeededgesettingisignoredinthisinstance.
AutorotatewillnotworkforMediasize:Page size specified in jobandMedia size & Feed
edge from Page Layout.

Feed edge
Theoptionsare:Auto,Long EdgeandShort Edge.
FormediathatcanbefedintotheprinterbothLongEdgeFirst(LEF)andShortEdgeFirst(SEF)
(A4,LetterandB5),choosingLong Edge/Short Edgewillrotatetheimagetofitonthechosen
Media,whenMediasizeisMedia size from Page LayoutorShrink to Media size from Page
Layout.Therefore,whenthefeedtrayisloadedwithA4(LEF),andA4MediaissetinthePage
Layout,Longedgeisselected,andyouareprintinganA4portrait,theimageisrotatedtofiton
theA4LEF.
Formediathatcanonlybefedintotheprinteroneway,choosingLong EdgeorShort Edge,will
rotatetheimagetofitonthepaper.
TheAutooptionleavestheorientationasitwasspecifiedinthejob.AutoisenforcedwhenMedia
sizeisPage size specified in job.

Output bin
Theoptionsavailableare:Top, face downandLeft, face up.
Note:DuplexisnotavailableforallMediaweightsandtypes.Pleaserefertotheprinteruser
guideformoredetails.

Duplex (double-sided)
Thiscanbeswitchedonoroff.WhenselectedyoucanchoosetoflipthepageontheLongEdge
orShortEdge.

Collate multiple copies

Withthisoptionselectedmultiplecopiesofajobarecollatedasseparatedocuments.

Enable media check

Whenthisoptionisselectedtheprinterdisplaysamessageaskingyoutocheckthatthecorrect
mediaisloaded.

5.1.5.6 Constraints
Theprinterimposesconstraintsonthepapertype,weightandsizethatcanbeusedwiththefinisher,
duplex,traysandstackers.Theseoptionsallowyoutospecifywhattodowithajobwhentheoptions
selectedconflictwiththeabilitiesoftheprinter.
Theoptionsare:Warn and ContinueorAbort.
WhenWarn and Continueisselected,thepluginautomaticallycorrectstheconflictingoptionswitha
biasontheMediatype/weight/sizebeforeoutputtingthejob.Anyconflictsandcorrectionsappearas
warningsintheRIPsmonitorwindow.
WhenAbortisselected,thepluginabortsthejobwithError 25: Combination of input/output
selections is not supported by the printer.TheconflictingsettingsaredisplayedintheRIPs
monitorwindow.

6.1 Media handling

TheOKIC931orOKIC941plugincurrentlysupportsonlythemediatypesthattheprinterisaware
of.
YoucanviewthelistofavailablemediatypesbyselectingtheMedia typefieldoftheConfigure Device
menu.Youcanviewthesamelistbyopening,inatexteditor,oneofthedevicefilesin
\SW\Devices\<pluginname>\MediaTypeNames.
SeealsoErrormessagesonpage23forinformationonarelatederrormessage.

7 Output file naming

Usingvariabletagsandfixedtextyoucansetupafilenamingtemplateforyouroutputfiles.Usinga
templateensuresyouroutputfileswillbenamedconsistently,and,dependingonwhichtagsyouuse,
withappropriatejobinformationtoidentifytheoutputfilecorrectly.

Toimplementyourfilenamingtemplate,addtheappropriatetagsandtext(ifneeded)totheFile
templatefieldoftheConfigureDevicedialogforthedeviceyouwishtouse.

7.1 Tag usage

Thereareafewrulestokeepinmindwhenusingtags:
Theoperatingsystemtagsmustappearatthestartofthetemplate.
Youmaylimitthelengthofanyexpanded(derived)filenamebyusinganintegerbeforethetag.
Forexample,<5jobname>limitsthenametoamaximumof5characters.
Tagswhichproducenumericvaluesaretruncatedfromlefttoright.
Tagsthatproducealphanumericstrings(stringscontainingthecharactersaz,AZ,and09)are
truncatedfromrighttoleft.
Fixedtextcanbepartofthefilenamestemorextension.Forexample,

ToprocesstheICCprofilingtargetsandoutputthemtoaprinter,youwillneedtocreateapagesetup
whichusesthecorrectprintermodel,mediatype,inkandoutputquality,asdescribedinCreatinga
pagesetuponpage6.Thepagesetupmustnothaveanycolormanagementorcalibrationoptions
selected;theseshouldbesetto(None)or(No color management)asapplicable.Or,ifyouhavecre
atedaGoldenStateprofilefortheprinter,usingGlobalGraphicsSetGoldutilityforexample,you
mayselecttheprofileanduseitasasuitablereferencestatefortheprinter.SeeChapter5Configur

9.2.2 Printing and measuring an ICC target

Usingyourpagesetup,printtheICCtarget,measureitwithyourpreferredprofilingtool,andsave
theprofiletoasuitablelocation.
Somehintsforobtainingbetterresults:
Totalareacoverage:Forsomepapertypesthetotalareacoverageshouldbelimited.This
dependsonthepaper,resolutionandscreeningused,butagoodguideistolimitthecoverageto
280%foruncoatedpapersandto340%forcoatedpapers.Someexperimentationmaybe
requiredtodeterminetheoptimumsetting.
Blackgeneration:Thepresenceofblackinkinhighlightscaninsomecasesbeobjectionableand
canintroduceanunnecessarilygrainyappearancetosomeimages.Selectasettingwhichimages
blackonlyindarkregions.(Ifitisnotclearwhichsettingswillimageblackonlyindarkregions,
selecttheminimumamountofblackgenerationallowedbytheICCprofilingpackage.)
Numberofpatches:Althoughthenumberofcolorpatchesprintedandmeasuredisnotalways
aguidetocolorquality,itisgenerallytruethatprintingmorepatchesproducesbetterresultsfor
anygivenICCprofilingpackage.
ForgreateraccuracyitisrecommendedthatyoucreateanICCprofile.ThecreatedICCprofileisthen

Thismessageappearswhenthefilenameextensionistoolongforthetargetplatform.Forexam
ple,filenamesinUNIXarenotconsideredtohaveaseparatefilenameextension.Usingthe
<dot>taginconjunctionwiththe<unix>tagwouldgeneratethiserror.Topreventthiserror,
createatemplatesuchas<unix><jobname>.hpfratherthanusingthe<dot>tag.

10.4 Problems with passwords

WhenusingHLSandyouhaveproblemsenablingadeviceoroptionyoushouldconfirmwithyour
supplierthepasswordorpasswordfile.Theymayprovideyouwithanewpasswordorpassword
file.Ifthisisthecase,youmayneedtoprovidetheserialnumberofyourRIP.TheRIPdisplaysthis
numberintheRIPmonitorwindowwhenstartingup,intheform:

Youmustalsotellyoursuppliertheplatformforwhichyourequirethepasswordorpasswordfile.The
platformisthecombinationofoperatingsystemandprocessortype.Forexample,youmightspecify
WindowsXP,andIntelprocessor(CPU).
