Solutions will be reviewed during the DGD on Jan. 24.

1. A flat sheet is in the shape of a rectangle with sides of lengths 0.400 m and 0.600 m. The sheet
is immersed in a uniform electric field of magnitude 75.0 N/C that is directed at 20 from the
plane of the sheet (Fig. 1). Find the magnitude of the electric flux through the sheet.

FIG. 1: Flat sheet in electric field.

2. An insulating sphere has a diameter of 20.0 cm. (a) How many excess electrons must be
distributed uniformly within the volume of the sphere to produce an electric field of 1200 N/C
just outside the surface of the sphere? (b) What is the electric field at a point 10.0 cm outside
the surface of the sphere?
3. Consider a thin spherical shell of radius 14.0 cm with a total charge of 32.0 C distributed
uniformly on its surface. Find the electric field (a) 10.0 cm and (b) 20.0 cm from the center of
the charge distribution.
4. Two identical conducting spheres each having a radius of 0.500 cm are connected by a light
(neglect its mass) 2.00 m long conducting wire. A charge of 60.0 C is placed on one of
the conductors. Assume that the surface distribution of charge on each sphere is uniform.
Determine the tension in the wire.
5. In Fig. 2 a solid sphere of radius a = 2.00 cm is encased by a concentric spherical conducting
shell of inner radius b = 4.00 cm and outer radius c = 4.80 cm. The sphere has a net uniform
charge q1 = 5.00 fC (1 fC = 1 1015 C); the shell has a net charge q2 = q1 . What is the
magnitude of the electric field at radial distances: (a) r = 0, (b) r = 1.00 cm, (c) r = 2.00 cm,
(d) r = 3.00 cm, (e) r = 4.60 cm, and (f) r = 7.00 cm? (g) What is the net charge on the inner
and outer surface of the shell?

6. A charge of 3.00 C is fixed in place. From a horizontal distance of 0.0450 m, a particle of

mass 7.20 103 kg and charge 8.00 C is fired with an initial speed of 65.0 m/s directly
toward the fixed charge. Ignoring gravity, how far does the particle travel before its speed is
zero?
7. A uniformly charged, thin ring has radius 15.0 cm and total charge -24.0 nC. A proton is placed
on the axis of the ring a distance 30.0 cm from the center. The proton is then released from
rest. What is the speed of the proton when it reaches the center of the ring? Assume the proton
is constrained to stay on the axis of the ring.
