2015 NAMCYA PIANO Final Competition 5 p.m.

, Tuesday, 24 November 2015 Tanghalang

Nicanor Abelardo, CCP
We know CCP is the best place for classical music performances here in the
Philippines. It was a competition held for the youth the performes were:
Ricardo C. Abapo Jr.
Kirk Allen H. Mallorca
Gabriel Allan F. Paguirigan
John Daniel S. Rotap

Ricardo C. Abapo Jr. he played Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466 by Mozart
and he played it well but sadly his performance was not enough to win the
competition. But the piece was really nice and played very well.
Kirk Allen H. Mallorca he played Piano Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 54 by
Shcumann. As we all know, Schumanns pieces were really lively and fast but it is
also one of the hardest to play because of exchanging melodies from right hand to
left hand playing the melodies.
Gabrielle Allan F. Paguiriga he played Piano Concierto No. 3 by Bartok ooooooooohh
Bartok I never know what really is happening in the piece every time I hear
someone playing Bartok pieces because everything is just unpredictable but! HE
WON THE CONTEST.
John Daniel S. Rotap he played Piano Concerto No. 3 by Prokofiev when he was
performing me and my colleagues thought that hes the one thats going to win
because he executed everything very well and the arrangement he did was very
moving, he even received an award because of the arrangement he did even
though he did not win.
I had the chance to talk to Gabrielle the day after the competition and he is really
kind and humble, I greeted him that he did very good and thats it we went home.
The audience loved the performances and as I have observed I saw that there are
school battling there different students from different schools that came to support
their friend or classmate. Everyone is silent once the performers are already walking
down the stage and there are a lot of applause after every performances. I loved the
performances and I hope to watch it again this year.
2015 NAMCYA STRINGS Final Competition 5 p.m., Tuesday, 25 November 2015
Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino, CCP.
The competition was held at CCP by NAMCYA it was the final competition for strings,
the finalists are:
Raphael Espada- Violin
Marian Antonette Mayuga- Violin
Gabriel Art Mendoza- Violin
Amber Loraine Murillo- Violin
Roi Aldric Trawon- Violin
The competition was so long that it ended around 1am in the morning and I already
slept there for like two hours because the judges takes time on judging the
performances and who should win, Im pretty sure its a very hard thing to do
specially with all those great performances.
Raphael Espada played Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26 by Max Bruch, this
was my first time to watch a very long strings performance with very good finalist
and I am lucky enough to see them perform and battle it out for the finals. But I get
sleepy because there are so much finalists in this one not like the one we watched
yesterday.
Marian Antonette Mayuga played Max Bruch: Scottish Fantasy, Op. 46 one thing I
really noticed from her performance is that she really played it clean at neat but
shes doing it gently and effortless, you really know that she practiced her pieces
carefully.
Gabriel Art Mendoza played Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D major, Op.
35 this piece was a very long piece and at some point he forgot some few bars of
the pieces but he managed to comeback.
Amber Loraine Murillo played Samuel Barber: Violin Concerto, Op. 14 she played it
very well but she doesnt look so confident in front of everybody so she tends to
face the accompanying piano not the audience.
Roi Aldric Tawon played Jean Sibelius: Violin Concerto, Op. 47 this particular
performer played and killed this piece because of his confidence and the fast tempo
it has that really called everybodys attention.
That night was a long night but it was worth it because of the music we heard and
the performances weve seen I hope that classical music will be known in the
Philippines that everybody would love and appreciate such performances like this.
Tatlong Ipe: Isang Konsiyerto held at CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino 6:30 PM,
December 4, 2015. The concert was sectioned on 3 different generations the first
one was for Felipe Padilla de Leon Sr. who is the first generation musician in their
family followed by his son Felipe Mendoza de Leon Jr. who is the standing president
of the National Commission on Cultural and Arts. And the third son of Felipe Jr. the
modern artist who plays the lute very well, Diwa Felipe de Leon III. Obviously Im
still expecting for the 4th felipe from Diwa, they love giving the same names. The
night was full of patriotism expressed on their music and composition, some music
emerged from the time of Martial law when they saw their countrymen dying the
cost of democracy. And some music were made for happy events just like
Christmas. Here are the list of performers:
Kay Selya: Ronan Ferrer, tenor
Felipe Padilla de Leon
Lyrics: Francisco Balagtas

friend instead but still I enjoyed the night full of music for the love of the country
and democracy and changing generations of music.

Philippine Womens University School of Music: Sounds of Christmas excerpts from

Handels the Messiah and MGA AWITING PAMASKO etc. Held at Conrado Benitez Hall
Taft Avenue, Manila. 14th of December 2015 at 5 p.m. This was a Christmas concert
presented by the Faculty and students from the Music Department and I was one of
the performers where we sang on the last part of the program. This was a free
concert and the audience are mostly students and parents and friends of the
perfomers. We used the Conrado Benitez Hall because it is the biggest hall of the
campus. I invited my sister come and watch as we perform. The Gong ensemble and
the PWU guitar ensemble also with the PWU Vocal ensemble and us the Chorus
class. The audience looked happy and satisfied as we ended the performance. One
of the professors really stood out, his name is Marvin Gayramon and hes a
Baritone. And it was the first time I heard him sing. His voice was so powerful yet
gentle and still soothing to the ears and I hope I can still see some of his
performances in the future. I really enjoyed performing that day, I felt I was part of
something big. I really enjoyed studying the piece because of the joy and happiness
it brings to me and the listeners, its Christmas time everyone should be able to feel
the spirit of love and joy inside them and I know that music is one of the greatest
instruments used by God to help others feel that moment. Im happy and blessed to
be a part of this concert and Ill be happy to participate more for concerts like this.
Philippine Womens University School of Music Presents: Abigail Jane G. Ratertas
Graduation Recital in partial fulfillment of the requirement for Bachelor of Music in
Popular Music. Held at Conrado Benitez Hall Philippine Womens University Taft
Avenue, Manila. January 18, 2016 5:00 p.m.
Abigail is a graduating student and this graduation recital will not be possible
without her colleagues as her accompaniment. Eric Pakingan, pianist; Marvin
Soliven, Baritone; Aubrey Alamani, Bassist; Ezequiel Gonzaga, Guitarist; Michael
Rapadas, pianist; Precious Lagadon, Drummer; Jerome Hermida, Guitarist; Girl
Estanislao, Guitarist. The songs she picked for this concert are pop music because
she is a pop student, but the song that I really loved was As If We Never Said
Goodbye from the musical Sunset Boulevard. There was so much power and
emotions coming from her while singing that song. She also sang a tagalong pop
music called Chinito from the album of Yeng Constantino, youngsters now a days
like songs that express the very little details of their life and spend so much time
about it I guess thats what this song is about. I also liked the song Better World
composed by Ryan Cayabyab. This recital makes me remember about the saying by
Henry Wardsworth Longfellow God sent his Singers upon earth
With songs of sadness and of mirth,
That they might touch the hearts of men,
And bring them back to heaven again.
The Philippine Womens University School of Music Presents: Vina Rose C. Baconggol
Vocalis a Graduation Recital in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Bachelor of
Music In Popular Music. The Venue was Conrado Benitez Hall again and there were
not enough programs for everyone so not all the audience has programs but luckily
I got one. There were no ushers only the CCP has ushers. The songs performed were
Valerie by Sean Francis Caleb, Stay by Justin Parker, Love Me Like You Do by Ellie
Goulding, Hiram by George Canceco, Minsan Pa by Jose Mari Chan, Mahal Ko O
Mahal Ako by Edwin Marollano, The Laziest Gal In Town by Cole Porter, My Funny
Valentine by Richard Rogers, This Masquerade by Leon Russel, Cant Help Lovin Dat
Man by Jerome Kern, I Still Believe from Miss Saigon, The Picture In The Hall from
Musical Play 3 Postcards, Come To Your Sense by Tick Tick Boom, Im Not Afraid
Of Anything by Songs For A New World. But what I really liked was Stay it was a very
nice song and with her voice it gave color and power to the lyrics that speaks of
temptation and inability to resist true love. I love watching pop students do their
recitals because of the groove and the noise they make for such performance.
Philippine Womens University School of Music Piano Recital Featuring Martina
Uyboco
Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 10:00 A.M., Recital Hall. Nine-year old Martina, or
Drei as she is fondly called hails from Davao City. She began playing the piano at
the age of 5. When she turned 6, she came under the tutelage of Professor Russell
Brandon, a musicologist and concert pianist residing in Davao. Professor Brandon
quickly recognized Dreis talent as she breezed through her basic lessons and he
began giving her more difficult and challenging classical pieces.
He arranged for her to have her first public recital at the Yamaha School of Music in
Makati City in October of 2014. She had a second public recital in Davao City last
June 28, 2015 at Claudes Le Caf de Ville where she performed for a full house. The
pieces she played that day were Arrival of Queen of Sheba (Duet) by Handel, @ 2
Inventions by Bach, Sonatina 4 in F by Clementi, Fantasie in D Minor K385 by
Mozart, Sonata in C K545 by Mozart, 5 Spanish Dances Op12 (Duet) Moszkowski.
The duets were performed with Professor Russell Brandon. And at the end of the
program she played Canon in D in her own arrangemet and The River Flows In You
by Yiruma. She was really good but I only noticed her jelly tempo when she was
playing the Sonata in C by Mozart. But the performace was really good and
especially the acoustics of the hall helped on making the sound of the piano
gracious and lovely. It would be better if a lot of music students were there to watch
Drei perform. I enjoyed it.
Philippine Womens University School of Music Second Trimester Recital, January 27,
Wednesday, 10:00 A.M. This first batch of the recitalist are classical music students.
The recital was done at the recital hall where the acoustics is really good and the
best place for classical music to be heard. I really enjoyed listening to different
pieces played by different instruments. For me one of the students really stood out
with her performance her name is Aubrey Buenvenida she plays the clarinet and
shes really a stage performer if you can see her and she knew the piece by heart.
Everyone loved it and applaud after her performance she didnt receive any flowers
but Im pretty sure she knew that she did well.
Philippine Womens University School of Music Popular Music Second Trimester
Recital, January 27 Wednesday, 1:30 P.M.
I am not a pop a major but my teacher though I was so I was grouped at the pop
recital, and Sir Marvin was looking for a pop piece because both of my piece is
classical. But yeah I watched the pop students perform and some of them especially
the first timers are really nervous but also those who are not first timers. I know it is
normal feel nervous but dont let it have control over you. I played Sonatina in C by
Fritz Spindler and Scherzo by Dmitri Kabelevsky. I really like how I played the two
even though I know I was rushing a bit because I just want to get through it. Its a
really nice experience showcasing your talents to people, it is one of the ways to
improve yourself and how you perform. The audience are pretty loud every time a
performance ends people clap and yell as appreciation for the performer it feels
awesome.
