Music Concept/Title of Lesson: Romantic Period Day 2


Grade Level: 4th
Date & Time: 1/17/17 Period 4

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to describe the emotion or feeling of a given piece of music
2. Students will identify characteristics of Romantic Period Music
3. Students will demonstrate visually the way they perceive a given piece of music

Materials:
Laptop Tickets
Speakers worksheets
Projector Dry erase markers

Procedure:
1. Take attendance
2. Romantic Period Music
a. Tells a story
b. Describes things without the use of words, take away the lyrics of a song and the
music stands alone.
3. Romantic Period Music
a. Music was written to make you think of emotions, landscapes, scenes.
4. Activity Moonlight Sonata
a. Piece of paper
b. Draw or describe an object in the room (no it cannot be a person)
c. Think of three words to describe what you drew
d. As you work I will play a piece of music, I want you to tell me after whether the
words you chose could also describe the music or not. I will play it twice
e. If it doesnt fit, what would the music sound like for your object?
f. More on this another time
5. Final Activity
a. Ask students to identify the animal of a given song from Carnival of the Animals
i. Why do you think of this animal?
b. Do as time allows and provide the answer each time
Assessment:
Teacher will ask students to describe the way a given piece of music sounds using only one or two
descriptive words at a time
Teacher will ask at the end of class what the major characteristics of Romantic Period Music are
Teacher will walk around classroom as students complete activity to determine understanding of
how to visually represent the sounds they hear
