    "Bounty was an enlarged reconstruction of the original 1787 Royal Navy sailing ship HMS Bounty. Built in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in 1960, she sank off the coast of North Carolina during Hurricane Sandy on 29 October 2012. The tall ship was often referred to as HMS Bounty, but was not entitled to the use of the prefix "HMS" as she was not commissioned into the Royal Navy. Here "HMS" is treated as part of the popular name, and not as a ship prefix. Bounty was commissioned by the MetroGoldwynMayer film studio for the 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty. She was the first large vessel built from scratch for a film using historical sources. Previous film vessels were fanciful conversions of existing vessels. Bounty was built to extrapolated original ship's drawings from files in the British Admiralty archives, and in the traditional manner by more than 200 workers over an 8 month period at the Smith and Rhuland shipyard in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.     duringproduction.

    In1986,TedTurneracquiredtheMGMfilmlibraryandBountywithit.Theshipwasusedforpromotionand
    entertainment,andwasusedduringthefilmingofTreasureIslandwithCharltonHestonandChristianBalein
    1989.

    FallRiver,Massachusetts

    In1993,TurnerdonatedtheshiptotheFallRiverChamberFoundation,Inc,whichestablishedtheTallShip
    BountyFoundation,Inctooperatetheshipforeducational"adventures"aswellasatouristattractionandcelebrity
    promoterofFallRiver,Massachusetts.BountysummeredinNewEnglandwatersoperatingoutoftheHeritage
    StateParkfacilitiesinFallRiverandwinteredinFloridaoperatingoutoftheSt.PetersburgPier.

    Theshipwasbookedtoappearinseveralfeaturefilmsinthemid1990s,suchasaremakeofthe1935film
    CaptainBlood,starringErrolFlynn,andafilmaboutAnneBonny,an18thcenturyfemalepirate.Bothprojects
    wereshelvedbeforeproductionbegan.Theshipwassettoappearinthe1997StevenSpielbergfilmAmistad,but
    beforehersceneswereshotinNewport,RhodeIsland,filmingoftheslaveshiprebellionatthebeginningofthe
    filmwasmovedtoPuertoRicoandCalifornia.However,theshipdidappearinseveraldocumentariesduringher
    eightyearstayinFallRiver.

    Inthemid1990s,MarlonBrando,starofthe1962versionofMutinyontheBounty,showedinterestinusingthe
    shipforaprojectintheareaofhisislandintheSouthPacific.However,hewassurprisedatwhatitcosttooperate
    ashipwithacrewonaweeklybasis,andhepassedontheidea.

    WhileunderownershipoftheTallShipBountyFoundation,theshipwentintodrydocktwiceandhadmajor
    improvementstotheshipsribsandplanks.Duringtheseconddrydocking,CaptainRobinWalbridgedecidedto
    permanentlyremovethecoppercladdingandinitsplaceappliedmarineantifoulingpainttorepeltheinsectsthat
    boreintothewood.Duetolackofcommitmenttolongtermfundingbytheprivateandpublicsectors,thetrustees
    oftheTallShipBountyFoundation,Inc.determineditwastimetoputtheshipupforsale.Duetocashflow
    problemsallthecrewwereterminatedandvolunteerskeptawatchoverBountyatitsdockatHeritageStatePark.
    On15March2001,theshipwassoldtotheHMSBountyFoundation.
    In2005,whilemooredinSt.Petersburg,Bountywastheshootinglocationofthe"pornographicactionadventure"
    filmPirates.

    Restoration

    Theship'sdecliningconditioncausedthevesseltotemporarilyloseherCoastGuardlicense,butBountywas
    restored.Thevessel'sbottomplankingwasreplacedandrepairasrequiredattheBoothbayHarborShipyardin
    2002.MooredinherwinterhomeinSt.Petersburg,Florida,sheagainbecameavailableforcharter,excursions,
    sailtraining,andmovies,includingPiratesoftheCaribbean:DeadMan'sChestandTheSpongeBobSquarePants
    Movie[5]InApril2006,BountyreturnedtoBoothbayHarborforfurtherrefitincludingrepairstoherforward
    sectionsanddecks.Followingthiswork,Bountywasscheduledtorepeatthefamousvoyageoftheoriginal
    Bounty.[6]

    Duringthe2006refit,theshipwasvirtuallyrebuilttomakeherappearancemoresimilartothatoftheoriginal
    HMSBounty,andmakehermoresuitableforserviceasasailtrainingvessel.Herlowerdeckswereclearedof
    mostofits18thcenturystylefurnishingsandlivingspaces,includingtheGreatCabin,thegalley,andtheofficers'
    quarters.Thecoloroftheship'shullwaschangedfromoceanbluetoblackanddarkgreen.

    Postrestoration,thieves,andsaleattempt

    InAugust2007,BountyhadjustcompletedaUS$3millionrestorationandwasmakingasevenweekUKtour
    priortoembarkingonaworldtourviaSouthAfricaandNewZealandtoPitcairn(hometotheoriginalBounty
    descendants)andTahiti.TheUKportstourincludedavisittoMaryport,Cumbria,thebirthplaceofmutinyleader
    FletcherChristian.OnSaturday12September2009,theshipwasberthedatCustomHouseQuayinGreenock,
    Inverclyde,Scotland.Atabout04:10BSTthievestargetedtheshipandstoleasmallsumofcash,severalitemsof
    clothingwithBounty'sinsignia,asurvivalsuit,abook,aliferingandanAmericanflag.Theitemswerelater
    recoverednearby.[7]

    Bounty'sownershadofferedherforsalesince2010.[8]Theshipwasforsaleasof2012forUS$4.6million.[8]In
    winterof2012,theshipwasinSanJuan,PuertoRico.ShetookpartintheTallShipsgatherings2012,andwasin
    Halifax,NovaScotiainJuly2012.On12AugustshewasdockedatBelfast,Maine.On3September,Bounty
    sailedfromGloucester,MassachusettstoEastport,Maine.AfterastopatMaineMaritimeAcademyinCastine,she
    pulledintoBoothbayHarborfordrydockandmaintenance.ShewasrelaunchedfromtheBoothbayHarbor
    Shipyardon17October2012.BountyleftBoothbayboundforNewYorkCityearly21October2012.[9][10]

    Loss
    On25October2012,thevesselleftNewLondon,Connecticut,headingforSt.Petersburg,Florida,initiallygoing
    onaneasterlycoursetoavoidHurricaneSandy.[11][12]

    TheinitialrequestforCoastGuardassistancewassentinanemailbythecaptaintothevessel'sorganization.[13]At
    about8:45pmEDT,theorganizationrelayedtherequesttoCoastGuardSectorNorthCarolinaaboutBounty's
    situation.[13]ShortlythereaftertheBountycrewactivatedoneofBounty'sEPIRBbeacons.[13]Walbridgehad
    reportedtheshipwastakingonwater,andthecrewwaspreparingtoabandonship.[13]AfterwardsBountylost
    electricalpowerduetowaterfloodingthestarboardgenerator.[13]
    ThisinformationwassenttoaCoastGuardC130rescueairplane
    crewthatwasstationedinNorthCarolinaatRaleighDurham
    Airport.[12]Theship'slocationwasgivenasroughly90miles
    southeastoftheOuterBanksinthevicinityofafeatureontheocean
    floorknownastheHatterasCanyon.[12]TheC130rescueplane
    underwentequipmentoutagesonitsrescueflight,includingitsanti
    icingsystemanditsweatherradar.[12]Thiscausedthepilot(Lieutenant
    WesMcIntosh)andthecopilot(MikeMyers)toconductthesearchat
    approximately500feet(150m)AMSLinanattempttolocatethe BountywithdecksawashintheAtlantic
    OceanduringHurricaneSandyshortly
    vesselvisually,aroundmidnightandwithpoorvisibility.[12]Shortly beforesinkingapproximately90miles
    aftermidnighton29October,thestrickenvesselwasdiscovered.

    TheUSCGaircraftmaderadiocontactwithJohnSvendsen,Bounty's
    firstmate,astheC130circledtheshipintheearlymorninghours.[12]
    Bountywaslistingatabouta45degreeangleonitsstarboardside.AstheC130crewradioedinstructionsto
    Bounty,theplanecircledforhourswhilepreparationsweremade.Meanwhile,helicoptercrewsfromElizabeth
    Citywereinstructedtoprepareforaverydifficultrescueoperation.At4:45am,SvendsenradioedtotheC130
    thattheshipwassinkingandthecrewneededimmediateassistance.[12]McIntoshflewtheplanelowerandreadied
    hiscrewtodropliferaftsandsupplies.Withtheplaneshortonfuel,theC130droppedliferaftsbuthadtoleave
    thevesselandcrewontheirowninroughseasand50knot(93km/h58mph)winds.Itwouldbemorethanan
    houruntilthefirstJayhawkhelicopterarrivedonthescenetobeginthedangerousrescueattemptarounddawn.[12]
    OnememberoftheCoastGuardcrewreceivedmajorinjuriesduringtherescue.[12]

    ViceAdmiralParker,USCG,[14]reportedtheshiphadsunkandfourteenpeoplehadbeenrescuedfromliferaftsby
    tworescuehelicopters.Thestormhadwashedthecaptainandtwocrewoverboardoneofthelatterhadmadeit
    toaliferaft,buttheothertwoweremissing.Theyworeorangesurvivalsuitscompletewithstrobelights,thus
    rescuershadsomehopeoffindingthemalive.ClaudeneChristian,oneofthetwomissingcrewmembersandwho
    claimedtoberelatedtoHMSBountymutineerFletcherChristian,[15]wasfoundbytheCoastGuard.Shewas
    unresponsive,andlaterpronounceddeadatahospital.[1][16][17][18]

    TheothermissingcrewmemberwaslongtimecaptainRobinWalbridge.[19]RaisedinMontpelier,Vermont,
    WalbridgelatermovedtoSt.Petersburg,Florida.Hewasafieldmechaniconhouseboatswhoworkedhiswayup
    toobtaininga1600tonlicensein1995,whenhebeganworkingasaBountycrewmember.[20]Searcheffortsfor
    Walbridgecontinuedoveranareaof12,000squarenauticalmiles(41,000km216,000sqmi)untiltheywere
    suspendedon1November2012.[21]

    AformalinvestigationintothesinkingwasorderedbyUSCGRearAdmiralStevenRattion2November2012.[22]
    AninquiryintothesinkingwasheldinPortsmouth,Virginiafrom12to21February2013[23]atwhichitwas
    concludedthatCaptainWalbridge'sdecisiontosailtheshipintothepathofHurricaneSandywasthecause,and
    theinquiryfoundthistohavebeena"recklessdecision".[13][24]ThelossoftheshippromptedtheUSCGto
    conductareviewoftheeventsanddecisionsleadingtothelossoftheship.[25]
