ideas and solutions on how Assure Insurance could decrease the amount of waste produced at their
office which is then sent off to landfill for disposal.

Case study

Sarah works as an Operations Clerk at Blue Bank head office. During lunch, Sarahs Manager, Ali told
Sarah that he noticed a 15% reduction on his home electricity bill compared to his last bill. He
explained that he has installed new energy efficient light bulbs all around the house and he educated
his kids to switch off any devices after theyve finished using them which has helped minimize the
bill.

Ali thinks that by minimizing the amount of electricity being used in the office will help Blue Bank
save money as well as aid the environment. He has asks Sarah to come up with a plan to implement
an energy efficiency program at Blue Banks head office.

Q1. Write a plan with at least four ideas on how Blue Bank can reduce electricity usage at their
head office including things that can be done immediately and things that can take effect over
time.

Case study

Tran works as a Checkout Operator at SuperFresh Supermarket. During her tea break, she noticed a
large amount of disposal coffee cups that had been thrown in the rubbish bin. She was astonished at
the amount that was thrown and questioned why staffs were not bringing their own ceramic mugs
to work to wash and reuse.

Tran decided to take action. She created a sign and placed it on the notice board outside the staff
room which wrote Using disposal cups creates a lot of rubbish! Bring your own mugs to work and
save our environment.

Later that week, Trans Supervisor, Harold calls her to his office and asked why she had created the
sign. Tran explained that she is concerned about the amount of rubbish the staff had generated.
Harold admired her passion for the environment and congratulated her on the idea. He asked her to
think about other ways she could deliver her message more effectively.

months and she is currently deciding which washing machine and dishwasher to choose for each
hotel room. They are already over budget for refurbishing the hotels, so she has been asked to keep
the costs as low as possible.

Cindy has identified two models of washing machines and dishwashers. The only models within her
budget are the least efficient for both water and energy use. Cindy knows her manager is concerned
about their current budget but she is concerned that saving money at this stage may be false
economy. She decided to complete a cost benefits analysis using this information.

reviews the steps she took to implement the scheme and is unsure of what to do to improve.
