Introduction
Concrete pipe, in various forms, has been used for over 5,000 years. Ancient pipe and drain systems
have been discovered in India, Iraq, Crete and other locations that date back to the third millennium B.C.
The Romans used crude types of concrete and masonry to construct pipes and aqueducts throughout
their empire, some of which are still in use today.
Concrete pipe, as we know it today, had its origins in Europe and North America in the mid 1800's.
Farmers began using concrete drain tiles in the 1830's. Concrete pipe was used for sanitary sewers as
early as 1842 in the U.S. and the railroads began using concrete pipe for roadbed culverts in the 1850's.
The rich history of concrete pipe has spawned an industry which today produces an economical high
quality product for numerous applications.
Hanson Pipe & Precast is the leader in today's pipe industry. Founded in Texas in 1933, the company
has expanded throughout North America. As an industry leader, we have developed staffs of experts
in engineering, manufacturing, quality management, marketing, sales and service.
Our industry is dynamic, as are our products. We have adapted to meet the changing needs of the
construction industry, yet are dedicated to the traditional requirements of quality, service and economy.
As required throughout history, a buried pipe must fulfill two functions. First, it is a conduit which must
efficiently convey the fluid it was designed to carry. Second, and equally important, it is a structure which
must be able to support the weight of the earth and live loads above it. Unlike flexible pipe materials such
as steel, aluminum and plastic, concrete pipe is able to fulfill both functions because of its inherent
strength and rigidity.
The volume of concrete pipe specified and installed in the U.S. has increased every year, which
demonstrates the confidence engineers and contractors have in its features, which include:
Strength - concrete pipe can be designed to withstand any combination of loads with
minimal embedment support.
Durability - concrete pipe can function in various environments for generations.
"Spec it, bury it and forget it"
Hydraulic efficiency - concrete pipe has a demonstrated and documented Manning "n"
value of 0.010."
Local availability - concrete pipe is produced locally to meet local needs.
Adaptability - concrete pipe can be designed, built and installed to meet any
project requirements.
Economy - concrete pipe has repeatedly proven to provide the low-cost reliable system.
This catalog has been prepared to assist you in planning, designing and specifying with concrete pipe
and precast products. We have attempted to present the details in a useful and logical manner. The
details included by no means represent all we can produce; they merely illustrate our different product
lines. We take pride in saying, "Our only limitation is your imagination."
Thank you for your interest in concrete pipe, and congratulations for understanding that often, innova-
tion is knowing what not to change.
Not all products shown in the sections that follow are inventoried at each of our plants. We encourage
you to call our sales office nearest to you for availability, or with questions or suggestions.

Houston HEIDELBERGCEMENT Group
Reinforced Concrete Pipe
Step 1
Ensure that the bell and spigot of the pipe are clean, and free of debris.
Spigot Bell
Step 2
Using the lubricant supplied, lubricate the bell of the pipe throughly. Also lubricate
the gasket groove in the spigot of the pipe being joined.
Step 3
Place the gasket in the spigot groove. A well lubricated groove will automatically
equalize the tension in the gasket.
Spigot Bell
Step 4
When joining the pipe, align the spigot of the pipe with the bell of the pipe previously
placed. The gasket must contact the flared end of the bell around the complete
circumference.

Joining Procedure for "O" Ring Gaskets TX 3.13 01-25-10
Houston HEIDELBERGCEMENT Group
Reinforced Concrete Pipe
Step 1
Ensure that the bell and spigot of the pipe are clean, and free of debris.
Spigot Bell
Step 2
Place the self-lubricating gasket on the spigot end of the pipe, with the flap portion facing
up. The bottom of the gasket should rest firmly against the spigot shoulder.
Step 3
When joining the pipe, align the spigot of the pipe with the bell of the pipe previously laid.
Step 4
Join the pipe. Up to 24" diameter, the pipe can usually be barred home. Place a block
of wood across the pipe invert to protect the bell. For larger pipe use a come-along to join
the pipe. The mantle section of the gasket rolls over the compression area of the gasket
and comes to rest in the annular space.
Step 1
Ensure that the bell and spigot of the pipe are clean, and free of debris.
Spigot Bell
Step 2
Place the gasket evenly around the spigot end of the pipe as shown above. Do not lubricate
the spigot. The bottom of the gasket should rest firmly against the spigot shoulder.
Step 3
Apply an even amount of lubricant to the bell and to the face of the gasket.
Step 4
When joining the pipe, align the spigot of the pipe with the bell of the pipe previously laid.
Step 5
Join the pipe. Up to 24" diameter, the pipe can usually be barred home. Place a block
of wood across the pipe invert to protect the bell. For larger pipe use a come-along to join
the pipe.

1. Grade trench bottom and bring bedding material to height. Bedding material should be 6" thick
minimum, or more depending on existing soils. See project plans and specifications for details.
2. Preformed flexible plastic joint material (Ram-Nek or equal) is installed on the box spigot (top
half of box) at the shoulder of the joint. The joint material is installed in the bell (bottom half of box)
at the shoulder. Joint priming is not required but is recommended according to the manufacturer.
Groove Groove
Tongue Tongue
In cold weather, the joint material should be kept warm prior to installation to keep the mastic pliable
and compressible.
3. A pipe puller or come-a-long should be used to pull joints home. This is preferable to
pushing since it minimizes damage to the box culvert.
4. A small gap can be expected at each joint. For boxes with spans of 10 feet or less, a normal space
can be 3/8" to 1" depending on the size of the box. TXDOT enforces their spec.; section 462.4(5),
last paragraph, as an installation standard for both straight and pulled joints. This is a 1" maximum
gap.
5. Each box joint should be checked for grade and alignment. We recommend that the grade be
checked at the lower haunch and not on the centerline.

Note:
Arch and elliptical pipe are supplied in the same classes and D-loads
as round pipe. They are designed to carry the same dead and
live loads as precast round pipe and box culverts.
Use of Tables
Substituting Different Products at Full Flow Conditions
V = 1.486/n
R.66 S.5
Where; Q = A V
Substitute for V:
Q = A (1.486/n R.66 S.5)
Therefore: Q = K S.5
CMA - Corrugated Metal Arch - use n = 0.024 for 2 2/3 x 1/2 inch & 0.027 for 3 x 1 inch
CMP - Corrugated Metal Circular Pipe - use n = 0.024
RCA - Reinforced Concrete Arch - use n = 0.012
RCB - Reinforced Concrete Box Culvert - use n = 0.012
RCE - Reinforced Concrete Elliptical - use n = 0.012
RCP - Reinforced Concrete Circular Culvert - use n = 0.012
Note:
For larger structures see Full Flow Constant Tables in section 6 (Bridge Structures).
1. When specifying floor and invert elevations of a structure, check for sufficient wall height to take
the required holes. Thus one must subtract brick & casting allowance, top slab thickness, and
hole raise, if applicable.
2. Look out for too much pipe into too small a structure. There may be very little support for the
top section when all the blank outs are removed . This is particularly critical when transporting
the structure and when CMP or HDPE is used.
3. Try to put pipes into flat wall structures at as near 90 degrees to the wall as possible. Shallow
angles require large elliptical holes and weaken the wall.
4. Try to maintain at least 2' of cover over your pipes. Less than this may put you into the throat
area, cause conflicts with castings, or cost your client more for high strength pipe. (Note that
these are only some of the problems.)
5. Specify pipe material on your drawing. Hole sizes differ for the same pipe in different materials.
6. Use standard structures wherever possible. They are far more economical.
7. Where possible, use locally manufactured castings. They do not have high transportation costs
and long delivery times.
Notes: (1) A dash ( - ) in the table signifies that the pipe is not manufactured or else not readily
available in a particular material.
(2) Values given in the table are those that would normally be used in our plant.
However, the blank out diameter can be varied as required by a given situation.
Example No. 1:
Given: 48" Dia manhole, 12" dia. RCP pipe, 18" dia. RCP pipe, 76 degree
included angle between pipe centerlines.
Procedure: (1.) Turn to "Standard Hole Diameter Table" and find: 12" RCP
hole is 21" dia., and 18" RCP hole is 30" dia.
Result: 74.15 degrees is the normal minimum angle between these pipes in
this structure. Since this angle is less than the 76 degrees specified;
the structure will readily accommodate the pipes in question.
Example No. 2:
Find the minimum structure for the pipes of Example 1 on the previous page.
Given: Round Structure desired for reasons of economy: Find minimum diameter
structure for 12" dia. RCP pipe, 18" dia. RCP pipe; 76 degree included
angle between pipe centerlines.
Procedure: (1.) Hole Diameters are once again 21" & 30".
(4.) Total angle is 86.46 deg., which is too large, however, pipe separation
angle of 10.88 deg. can be reduced to 0 deg., and the holes butted
together at the inside wall. This is not recommended practice, but is a
design option, thus the total included angle is 75.58 deg. This is less
than the 76 deg. specified, and the 42" round will just accommodate
the pipes in question.
Note: Structure sizes can also be reduced by decreasing hole diameters. However, the
designer should be aware such procedures increase construction difficulties, may
violate local standards, and should be avoided if at all possible.
For sanitary sewer structures, the hole diameter is determined by the flexible
connector required and the 4" spacing between holes is required.

Structure Diameter

Separation Angle

The following pages give the maximum angle at which a hole of given diameter may
enter the wall of a square or rectangular structure without cutting into the corner area
of the box. In the following discussion, refer to the "Pipe Angle Diagram, Flat Wall
Structures".
The table on page 7.16 gives angle values for situations where the pipe centerline
meets a wall centerline at the inside face of the wall. See the lower diagram on page
7.15. Application is restricted to walls whose inside width and thickness are given at
the bottom of the table. For structures with other dimensions, use the formula for
found at the bottom of the "Pipe Angle Diagram" page. Note that dimension "L" has
no effect in this instance so table values can be used for non-standard box lengths.
Given: It is desired to put an 15" RCP pipe through the wide side of a
24" x 36" box at an angle of 30 degrees with the box centerline and
with the pipe centerline passing through the center of the
wall. Can this be done without cutting into the box corner?
Procedure: (1.) Turn to "Standard Hole Diameter Table" and find: 15" RCP
hole is 24" dia.
(2.) Wall thickness for a 24" x 36" box is 6", so inside wall dimension
over wall thickness is 36" / 6".
(3.) Find 36" / 6" column in the table and 24" hole diameter row at
the right side of table.
Result: Read up and over to intersection; finding max. angle of 32.33 degrees.
Max. angle is greater than proposed angle, so we are OK.
Note that a jog is formed in the line when using this system. As a practical matter,
given sufficient distance between structures, this jog can be eliminated by slightly
angling the pipe in the hole. However, the designer should consider this problem.
The diagram and equation found at he top of "Pipe Angle Diagram", page 7.15, is for
those situations where the pipe and hole centerline pass through the center of the
structure. No table values are recommended here due to the large number of possible
"W" and "L" combinations.
