Question One
With the aid of appropriate labeled sketches explain the three different types of
CRYSTAL STRUCTURES that define crystalline structure in materials,
(10)
Imperfections of defects in crystal structures refer to the deviation in the regular pattem
of the crystalline lattice structure. There are three such defects of POINT, LINE and
SURFACE defects, discuss these defects. (10)

Question Two
It is important to understand the MELTING CHARACTERISTICS of metals for
different manufacturing processes. Discuss the melting characteristics of pure metal
elements and alloyed metal elements. (10)
The storage and flow of heat within a material is of importance as it determines energy
levels, SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITY determines this characteristic. Discuss these
characteristic and also explain the thermal properties in manufacturing.

Question Three
Draw and label the phase diagram of temperature verses % weight of tin for TIN ~
LEAD (Sn — Pb) alloy system. [10]
Using the sketch of 3.1 explain the phase diagram. Your explanation must include the a,
Band eutectic composition and eutectic temperature (10)

Question Five
5.1 With the aid of suitable sketches explain how the orientation of reinforcement fibers
increases the strength of composite materials. (10)
5.2. With the aid of a graph, TENSILE STRENGTH vs FIBER DIAMETER, discuss the role
played by the diameter of the fiber for strength enhancement. (10)
