What is a Service Learning Project?

In this unit, the students will be required to complete a Service Learning Project. The project will
require the students work outside of the classroom to discover more about the content through
community service, involvement, or research. The goal of the service project is to encourage
students to go beyond the classroom to find intrinsic motivation that will encourage them to learn
more and be active about change through their own actions. To fulfill this requirement, students
will choose one of the following Service Learning Project Types:

Direct Service:
If students choose to participate in Direct Service, they will be required to participate in a
minimum of 2 volunteer hours at a local Veterans Affairs office or other local associations that
aid veterans. Will require signature of an official from the volunteer site.

Indirect Service:
If students choose to participate in Indirect Service, they will be required to work on a
fundraiser to help receive collections for the Veterans Affairs or other local associations that aid
veterans. This can be done with an event (just planning, implementing is extra credit), a website,
a video campaign, etc...

Advocacy Service:
If the students choose to participate in Advocacy Service, they will be required to
participate in a function or event that advocates for Veterans. This can include speaking at a
local town hall, open house, city council meeting, etc.

Research Service:
If the students choose to participate in Research Service, they will be required to find and
interview a veteran that participated in a war (this does not have to be the Vietnam War). The
results of this interview will be presented to the class.

Regardless of the service the student chooses, all students will be required to write a reflection
on their project and will create a technology based presentation on their project that will be
presented in class.

Reflection will be at least 1 page typed answering the following questions

1. What were your assumptions about Veterans before the project
2. What was your actual experience?
3. How did your assumptions change?
4. How will you use this information to better your community?

Technology Presentation:
Students will have the choice of designing a website, a google slideshow, a video, or another
form of multimedia presentation to present their project to the class.
Presentations should be 5-7 minutes in length
Give a brief summary of your project
Answer the reflection questions
Give any other pertinent details
Finish with how this affects the community.
