SUNNINGDALE

SCHOOL
SCHOOL NOTES SUMMER 2016

A.J.N.D
1933 - 2016

Nick Dawson came to Sunningdale in 1955. He took over as Headmaster, with Tim in 1967 and together they ran the school until 2005. Nick then
stayed on for a year to teach geography before retiring. He never fully retired, though, continuing to help look after the grounds. He devoted sixty years
of his life to Sunningdale and no-one has made a greater contribution in the history of the school.

Nick had always wanted to run a prep school. His wish to teach was partly influenced by his love of sport but he was also an outstanding classroom
teacher. There were very few subjects that he did not teach at some time or another but he will be particularly remembered as a brilliant geography
teacher. His Common Entrance geography results were always in either first or second place and he had a knack of finding ways to help boys remember.
You go across before you go upstairs, was unforgettable as the key to six figure map references!

Every afternoon, rain or shine, Nick could be found on the football field or, in the summer, on the athletics track, which he had marked out with
remarkable precision and very straight lines! His football sides were always very difficult to beat. Boys who played for him were desperate not to let
him down. He was a hard taskmaster but his praise, when it came, was worth every ounce of effort. His halftime team talks could turn a match. As
one old boy explained in his letter, after they were 1-0 down away to St. Georges, they went on to win the game 5-1! Nick also ran bi-annual football
tours to Holland which the boys loved.

Sunningdale established a fearsome reputation on the fives court under Nicks guidance. Sunningdale presented the cup for the prep school fives in
1967 and Nicks pairs would go on to win it 12 times. When they did not win it they were in the final. Nick would be at the courts almost every
break, his gloves carried there and back by his golden Labrador, Whisper, and all the boys vied for a place on court with him.

Nick was an inspiration to those around him. He was an old school headmaster. He did not sit back and watch others do things, he was a part of
every day, he led from the front. He inspired loyalty in the boys and in those who worked for him and with him and he dedicated himself to getting
the best out of the boys in his care. As one old boy put it,My academic life, my career, my love of sport and, put simply, my character have all been
and continue to be defined by my time spent under Tim and Nick's care. He worked tirelessly and selflessly and the enormous number of letters which
have been sent bear witness to the very high esteem in which he was held by those who came into contact with him. We will seldom see his like again.

Under 9A Cricket
Not since the The Second Battle of Lacolle Mill in 1814 has there been a group of more defiant soldiers
than the U9A cricket team this term. They faced a barrage of bigger schools and have banished them all
into oblivion. Strategic brilliance from their Field Marshall, Senior min and some heroic attacking prowess
from his trusty Chief of Staff, Field mi, saw off a wave of early attacks from Dorset House, Lockers Park,
Brockhurst and Ashdown House. The enemies were startled by the resilience shown by the charismatic
Brigadier Jackson and an ally from the French ranks Caddy mi. The enemy continued to show their strength
and decided to throw down the gauntlet. Several tricky exchanges between Bishopsgate and Woodcote
House were rigorously swept aside by the enigmatic duo of Lt. Col. Guest-Gornall MC and the plucky Bel-
gian liaison officer Sous-Lieutenant De Chimay. The swash buckling Guest-Gornall throughout the battle
maintained remarkable discipline and guile. The enemies, soon realising this group of men had something
special about them, decided to launch one almighty attack on the Ludgrove front. Against all odds the boys
held their nerve and stiffened the sinews. Some superb ground work was once again our strength and both
Sapper Allen ma and RSM Stone were the shining lights on a somewhat gloomy day. The weather then
played havoc and the soldiers, aided by some rest, were once again faced with an attack from both flanks.
St. George's and Brambletye. Field mi once again showed his class and led the boys against Brambletye due
to Field Marshall Senior taking a flesh wound to the head whilst on a solo mission in the Incinerator
Woods lines. Other mentions must go to the courageous Corporal Affram and young subaltern Strickland. Never have the fields of Sunningdale witnessed such
heroic and dogged warriors. I hope that one day they can look back on this time as fondly as I certainly will. A masterclass in team spirit, pertinacity and skill
like few that have gone before them.

Sports Day
As with much of this term we were not blessed with good weather on the day and as the heavens opened at lunchtime it was a very beleaguered and sodden
group of athletes who packed up their spikes and headed for Long Leave. It was such a shame as the grounds and track looked immaculate thanks to the excep-
tionally hard work of A.J.N.D,T.M.E.D and the gap students. However, it seemed in some senses fitting that the day should not be completed with one of our
number missing. On the last Monday of term we did manage to finish the day off and as ever there were some wonderful performances, with Field mi equalling
a long held school record and Efemuai winning the Senior Victor Ludorum in the last race of the day.

Athletics
One district champion, victories in four out of five matches, Under 10 unbeaten season.
If we have reached great heights, it was only because we were standing upon the shoulders of a giant; A.J.N.D was a tremendous supporter of athletics at
Sunningdale, both as a visionary and exceptionally successful master in charge and latterly as wise counsel to members of staff who attempted to follow
falteringly in his footsteps. All Sunningdalian athletes, past and present, owe a great debt of gratitude to his teaching and leadership.
Seniors Vs. Hall Grove lost,Vs. Bishopsgate won,Vs.Woodcote House drawn,Vs. St.Andrews Pangbourne won.
We were blessed with some very strong athletes in the seniors with the school captain, Efemuai leading from the front running the 100m in some frighteningly
quick times, notably against Woodcote House (12.82s.) and Hawkey running in imperious style in the hurdles and 800m. Russell did well in the high jump
recording 1.45m against St.Andrews Pangbourne. Mention should also go to Jegede, Hopton ma and Ekpenyong who also chipped in notable performances as
the season progressed. It goes without saying that we are enormously proud of Hinchliffes hurdling victory at the District Athletics meet (11.60s.) and his very
fine performance in the National finals, where but for the merest slip he could have won!
Juniors Vs. Hall Grove lost,Vs. Bishopsgate won,Vs.Woodcote House lost,Vs. St.Andrews Pangbourne won.
This was a very young Junior team, with most boys having another year to go in this age group, often we were outgunned by bigger and faster boys, but it is
worth mentioning that on numerous occasions we punched above our weight, winning relay races where on paper we did not have a hope. Kivanc was
undoubtedly the find of the season, running beautifully in the 100m (14.22s.) and 200m. He was ably assisted by the talents of Boscawen, Lewis mi, Fontana and
Horton ma, who all performed superbly in their events.
Under 10 Vs. Hall Grove won,Vs. Bishopsgate won,Vs.Woodcote House won, ,Vs. St.Andrews Pangbourne won.
This was a very committed set of a boys and their efforts throughout the season bore witness to just how much they wanted to win. Undoubtedly Field mi.

Inaugural Sunningdale School Triathlon

The first ever school triathlon athletes were greeted by clear blue skies and a fairly testing course as we
dived into the world of triathlon for the first time! The juniors were the first to put their swimming,
cycling and running skills against the 4.1km course. Individual honours went to Jackson ma who saw off
the competition following a blistering swim, an impressive cycle and then a sound running performance.
Hagger came second, narrowly beating Jackson min. Fox took the house prize. In the senior competition,
the lengthened course of 5.2km proved tough for some but Hinchliffe stormed to a mightily impressive
victory, winning in a time of 22m 30s, almost 3 minutes faster than second placed Hawkey. Hagg-Davies
completed a Crabtree 1,2,3 as they dominated the house competition. Special mention must go to all of
the other boys who competed with tremendous heart and desire. It proved to be a roaring success and
an event that will now become a bi-annual fixture in the calendar. Well done to all!
