PERSONAL REACTION

The group that presented the topic did an amazing job reporting all the chapters of
their presentation. With them explaining the topics it is easier for us students to understand
the principles and concept of the topic which is the Basic Elements of Highway Traffic
analysis. Highway transportation has provided several advantages that contribute to a
higher standard of living. Traffic analysis is a way to reduce the negative impact of
highways, it is necessary to adequately collect information. Information like speed-density
relationship, Flow-density relationship and speed-flow density relationship. The group
manages to discuss all this information quite well, for us students to understand it.

SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

As stated in their research, the functional effectiveness of a highways can be

observed in terms of its ability to assist and accommodate the flow of vehicles with both
safety and efficiency. To determine its effectiveness there are parameters needed to be
measured and analyzed thoroughly. These parameters include the quantity of traffic, the
type of vehicles within the traffic stream, the distribution of flow over a period of time, the
average speed of the traffic stream and the density of the traffic flow. The analysis of all
these parameters will directly affect the scale and plan of the proposed highway, together
with the type and amount of materials used in its construction. This process of examination
is termed traffic analysis and the sections below deal with relationships of the parameters.
Level of service describes in a qualitative way the functioning conditions for traffic from the
perspective of the road user. It measures the level of congestion on a highway in terms of
travel time and traffic speed. The Highway Capacity Manual creates maximum flow values
attainable on a multi-lane highway given a certain speed limit and prevailing level of
service. This is how complicated highway analysis and how engineers should be more
precise in traffic analysis. Another factor that needed to be discussed in highway traffic
analysis is the forecasting the urban and rural roads. Highway are constructed to connect
rural areas to urban areas to improve its economic status.

PROBLEM

Poor traffic analysis

Types of vehicles are not accounted within the traffic flow
Accident prone areas for the rural roads

OBJECTIVES

Traffic analysis parameters are done correctly.

Assigning different route to larger type of vehicle.
Having a safe and efficient designated route for rural roads

Courses of consideration

Improper traffic analysis

Assign routes for vehicles is not pursued.

Accident prone areas or not, climate can change the properties of the soil
where the highway is placed.

Alternative courses of action

Traffic analysis should be studied precise for a specific highway.

The routes of each type of vehicles must be analyzed carefully to avoid

congestion

Standard materials for the highway should be used to avoid accidents

Recommendation

Highway engineers must investigate the proposed location of the highway, if it is safe for
the future users of the roads. The parameter for traffic analysis must be studied correctly to
acquire safe and efficient highway. Lastly, for the growth of our country, the government
should be able to have more project in connecting rural areas to urban areas. To give
opportunity to the rural areas to trade their goods conveniently and have more job offers to
them. Highway engineer have the formula to create highways with the use of traffic analysis.

Conclusion

Construction of highways is an extensive process, numerous problems should be

answered and time consuming. But these developments are evidence that our country is
rising to be a superior nation. Highway connect major cities to the smaller states which make
it easier for people to travel one to another and have more opportunities for a better life. With
these contribution of highways, highways should be designed and analyzed properly with
traffic analysis. Government should be able to cope up with the people using the roads and
should forecast when it will be congested at some point. And for the people using the roads,
the instructions and protocols in traffic should be observed correctly because in that way, a
free flow circulation will be attained.
