PERSONAL REACTION

The group that presented the topic did an amazing job reporting all the chapters of
their presentation. The presentation focuses in Highway intersection, baseline traffic figure,
priority intersection, roundabout and traffic signal control. The group explained how
intersection should be design for the purpose of controlling traffic and merging streams of
traffic to minimize delay. This is attainable through choice of geometric parameters that
control and regulate the vehicle paths through the intersection. These determine priority so
that all movements take place with safety. Another topic of the group is the priority
intersection, where is occurs between two roads, one termed the the major road and the
other is the minor road. The major road is the one allotted a permanent priority of traffic
movement over that of the minor road. The minor road must give priority to the major road
with traffic from it only entering the major road when appropriate gaps appear.

SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

As stated in their research, a highway intersection is required to control

contradictory and merging flow of traffic to minimize delay. This is attainable through choice
of geometric parameters that control and regulate the vehicle paths through the
intersection. These govern priority so that all movements will be safe and convenient for
the drivers. To provide vehicle drivers with a road design that will lessen confusion. The
need for flexibility dictates the choice of most suitable junction type. The selection process
requires the economic, environmental and operational effects of each proposed option to
evaluate. In designing highway intersection, we need to familiarize the baseline traffic
figure. Consisting of existing junction, new junction, short term, variation in flow and
knowing the priority intersection where it occurs between to roads namely the Major road
and the Minor road. In order to work efficiently, sufficient gaps must appear in the
circulating flows on the roundabout that drivers then accept. Traffic on the entry arms can
thus enter, circulate and then leave at their desired exit arm. Intersections and roundabout
intersection is a way to regulate flow of traffic, improper analysis and designing of
intersection can cause trouble and danger to the drivers.

PROBLEM

Improper design of roundabouts.

The required minimum sight stopping distance (SSD) is not followed.
Inefficiencies during off peak time leading to increase delay.

OBJECTIVES

The standard design for roundabouts are followed.

The desirable minimum SSD should be followed.

Recommendation

Highway engineers must familiarize the baseline traffic figures and should be able to
follow standard specifications in designing intersections. Roundabouts should be place at
the right location and should have the correct diameter according to the project analysis.
Geometric design profoundly influences roadway safety; it shapes road user expectations
and defines how to proceed through an intersection where many conflicts exist.

Conclusion

Construction of intersection is required to control conflicting and merging streams of

traffic so that delay is minimized. This is attainable through choice of geometric parameters
that control and regulate the vehicle paths through the intersection. These determine priority
so that all movements take place with safety. The safety is the number one priority of the
engineer designing and planning the intersection. The calculation process requires the
purpose of the projected traffic flow at the location in question, termed the design reference
flow. The variety within which this figure falls will indicate a junction design, which is both
economically and operationally efficient rather than one where there is either gross over, or
under provision. Different arrangements of turning movements should be tested in order to
check the performance characteristics of each junction option under consideration.
