Time
1hour 20 minutes
Learning objective Understanding the changes in matter

Learning achievement A student is able to :

Explain that materials are made of tiny similar particles
Describe about states of matter
Describe how different properties make different materials useful in
several ways
Explain the particle model for changes of state
Explain how particles are arranged in solids, liquids and gases
using particle theory to produce explanations of the changes in
properties of materials when they are heated.

Essential prerequisite Concept of volume and concept of weight for materials.

Teacher use Slides 5 and 6 to explain
the particulate nature of matter. Many of
the students may have heard the terms
of atom, molecule, and ion, but teacher
do not have to introduce to them formally.
This is the start of that process.
Teacher explain the tiny scale of these
basic particles.
Teacher use Slide 7 to reinforce that
the size of atom is tinier than microscopic
measurement.

lattice. They can vibrate but they cannot
move from one place to another. (The
lattice is made up of hexagons with
hollow middles and these hollows are
why ice floats like millions of tiny
bubbles.)
Water- This is water in its liquid form,
which is what we find most often on the
earths surface.The particles are in
contact with most of their neighbours
most of the time. The particles slide past
each other. (When the water is still, the
particles form a level surface, which is
kept in place by air pressure.)
Steam- This is water that has been
made so hot that it has turned into a gas.
These particles of water in the air whizz
in all directions, often colliding with each
other and with the walls of any container
they are in. (The true gaseous form of
water is water vapour which is made up
of tiny particles that are too small to be
seen. But in the steam state, the water
vapour particles have joined up to make
a mist that we can see. But the water
droplets in the mist are so tiny that the
heat around them can waft them up and
around despite the force of gravity. The
particles can put a huge amount of
pressure on the walls of a container, and
this is how steam engines work.)
