Standards Based Instructional Strategy that is Effective for ELD

One research based, standards aligned model for ELL instruction is the SIOP or Sheltered
Instruction Observation Protocol. The SIOP model contains thirty components teachers can
utilize for lesson planning. Research shows that teachers who utilized the SIOP checklist in
lesson planning more effectively accommodated diverse levels of English proficiency in their
classrooms.
Important Steps to the process include

Writing clearly defined language objectives (SIOP #2). While planning lessons, it is
important to decide how the lesson will address specific language objectives while also
addressing content objectives. Intentional focus on the objectives creates more
effective lessons regardless of the specific strategy. When utilizing guided inquiry
questions during collaborative learning I always attempt to formulate clear objectives
for developing English language skills in the context of mathematics and physics.
Write clearly defined content objectives (SIOP #1). Creating clearly defined content
objectives for a given exercise or lesson enhances the effectiveness of instruction during
the planning phase. While writing guided inquiry questions, creating exercises, and
structuring content it is critical to identify clear content objectives. These content
objectives can also help create rubrics and clear goals and directions for students.
Explicitly link concepts to students backgrounds and experiences (SIOP #7). Considering
students cultural backgrounds and experiences, and utilizing these as an asset can help
enhance the effectiveness of any specific lesson plan. Helping students create links
between past experiences and course content can help students develop important
connections.
Emphasize Key Vocabulary (SIOP #9). Vocabulary is often a barrier to ELL students.
Utilizing a word wall written in both English and the primary language of my students I
create a clear emphasis on academic English content vocabulary which has a positive
effect on ELL students ability to read and understand problems and ideas, and
formulate arguments and justifications. This word wall is accessible for all students on
Canvas as well, so that a student can review the vocabulary at any time.
Use speech appropriate for students level of proficiency (SIOP #10). Speaking in a way
that utilizes essential content vocabulary, but removes unnecessary or inaccessible
language can help ELL students to access course content. This is also true of written
materials. It is important to emphasize academic English skills, but eliminate jargon,
slang, or other ways of speaking which may be confusing to those with a different first
language than English.
