Service to Others

My name is Janet Garcia and I am a 12th grader in my fourth year of JROTC. In all of the

years that I have spent in JROTC, and all of the lessons and skills that I have learned from all the

years of being in this program, the lessons and skills that have best prepared me for partaking in

service to others would have to be skills learned from lessons in problem solving, managing

conflict, and critical thinking. Through the knowledge gained from these valuable lessons, I hope

to gain and keep the skills needed for the participation of service to others when fulfilling my

role of being a trustworthy and dependable cadet when assisting and being a team member while

partaking in this service to others. My ultimate goal is to therefore, not only appreciate being

able to participate in the service to others but also use the skills earned from the experience to

use it in everyday life.

Lessons in managing conflict have helped me enormously in preparing myself to do

service to others in that it has given me helpful advice and information in how to handle tough

situations if they were ever to occur. If a dispute were to be likely during the service to others,

these lessons that I have learned in the JROTC program have taught me to dissipate them and to

not just let them happen but instead, to be a voice of reason for others caught in their emotions to

be able to think clearly about their actions. They have further taught me to not be an instigator in

disputes between team members as well as to stop others from instigating. This would help
everyone to regain focus on the main goal instead, which is to service to others, instead of

complicating situations through disputes and arguments.

Problem solving skills have further helped me in getting ready for service to others by

being able to stay organized in plans by focusing on the main and real goal instead of being side

tracked by problems that may impede with the initial goal. Lessons in problem solving have

therefore been able to teach me to work well with others and how to help your team become a

better team work by working together in solving problems and complications in a calm

environment.

Just how these lessons have helped me in preparation to do service to others, critical

thinking skills have also helped me in this preparation for service. Critical thinking lessons has

helped me look at service to others in a different light than what I would have thought about it

before the lessons were ever introduced to me. Critical thinking has helped me see the logical

side of things and has made me be able to be more rational in the way I make decisions and how

I view and think about things. This has therefore, made me gain a true appreciation and respect

for the participation in the service to others which will make it more enjoyable when

participating in service to others.

Nothing beats hands on, and learning a skill in a classroom would never be the same as

learning how to use a skill outside of the classroom, such as what this service allows you to do.

Therefore, since I have yet to participate in service to others in JROTC, I would like to list what I

hope to learn and gain from participation in service to others instead. This year, when I

participate in service to others, my ultimate goal for myself is to be able to gain communication

skills. I also hope to be able to gain an even greater appreciation for the participation of service
to others. I think that this will be able to help me want to help in the servitude of others even

more in the future and thus, make me a better person than I was the day before.
