Presenter: Good morning and welcome to The world of books. Today we have two regular reviewers in
the studio Gavin Hillyer and Ruth Sutton so without further ado, lets look at Gavins first
choice.
Gavin: Er, yes, good morning. Now, my first book is one that Ive been waiting for with great
excitement. Its a new and long-awaited biography of Virginia Woolf one of the greatest
English writers of the twentieth century. I know, youll be thinking, What, another one? as
there have been so many written already, but this draws on letters and diaries that havent
been published before. The author is an excellent novelist in her own right so this is what I
would call a perfect mix one novelist writing about another.
Ruth: Yes, I must agree with Gavin on this. I was also rather doubtful, but this is an excellent read
and definitely a book for anyone interested in Virginia Woolf and her times.
Presenter: And now Ruth, what have you chosen for us?
Ruth: Well, actually mine is a book that came out a few years ago, but it passed me by and having
seen Slumdog Millionaire, I wanted to read the original novel that the film was based on. Q &
A by Vikas Swarup is an extraordinary read. I wouldnt know where to start to explain the
plot, but I would urge anyone interested in original fiction and India to read this book. The
film, with a screenplay by Simon Beaufoy, has captured the mood very well, but the book is
quite simply brilliant.
Gavin: I read the book when it originally came out and was very curious to see how it would be
adapted for film. I think both versions have their strengths, but on balance I prefer the book.
Presenter: Thank you both and now for my recommendation a work of non-fiction called Nothing to
Envy by prize-winning journalist Barbara Demick. This is an account of life in North Korea
and, apart from being very interesting, is also beautifully written. It has really made me want
to go and visit the country so what better recommendation could there be? Im afraid well
have to leave it there for this week. A big thank you to both of my guests and if youd like to
order any of the books weve talked about today, just log on to our website and youll find all
the details there. Next week well be joined by

There are a couple of girls in my class who are quite mean to Nicky. I dont know why they keep picking on
her, but they do and she just gets really upset and goes all quiet. If Im around though, they know theyll

doesnt want any more trouble. I guess I can understand that, but all the same

Speaker B
Lukes dad has just got a job in Bahrain so the whole family will be moving away over the summer. Its
going to be so weird not having him around. They live next door and we hang out together all the time. I
hope well Skype and email once hes gone. Were both friends on Facebook, so I guess thatll be one way
to keep in touch. Id really hate to lose touch with him.

Speaker C
My best friend is my cousin Rachel. In fact, our families are really close. Shes got three sisters and theyre
all pretty much the same age as me and my siblings. We dont see each other that often because we dont
go to the same school, but we spend most of the holidays together.

Speaker D
I feel really bad because I promised Id spend a few days with Matt when he started university this autumn.
In the end I couldnt go because I was offered a part-time job and as I needed the money I didnt want to
turn it down. I dont think hes forgiven me yet. I hope hell understand once hes calmed down.

Speaker E
It was such a small, stupid thing in my opinion anyway, but now Julias not talking to me. I know I
shouldnt have called Andy without telling her, but I thought I was doing her a favour as I know she really
likes him and is too shy to call him herself. Well, she found out and just went mad.

Speaker F
Fred is really moody sometimes and when hes in one of his moods, theres no point trying to reason with
him. Hes likely to just shout at you and storm off and then hell wait for you to apologise. I know hes got
problems at home so I try to be sympathetic and Ill always make the effort to be friends again. Sometimes
its hard though

Lucy: No problem, but first let me just get something to drink.
Peter: Of course. What would you like the usual?
Lucy: Yes a coffee, black with one sugar, please.
Peter: Right, lets get started, shall we? I called Tom to see whether he could join us, but
unfortunately he couldnt make it. However, he did say hes booked the function room at the
new Italian restaurant.
Lucy: When for?
Peter: Saturday the 21st from 7pm until midnight. Well be able to go in earlier though as well have
to set everything up.
Lucy: Excellent. Any idea how much its going to cost?
Peter: As the restaurants new theyre doing a special promotion of 50% of the normal price, so itll
be 150 for the night.
Lucy: Will we have to use their food?
Peter: According to Tom we can organise our own catering.
Lucy: Thatll cut down on costs, wont it? Ive already asked a couple of my friends if theyd be
happy to help with the food and theyre definitely enthusiastic. I was thinking we could just
organise lots of finger food so we wont need plates and cutlery and so on. Once weve
decided what kind of food we want, Ill go to the supermarket and buy everything. We can do
the cooking at my place if necessary.
Peter: That sounds great. Why dont you talk to the girls and see what theyd like to prepare and then
we can have another meeting about it next week and with any luck Tom will be able to make it
as well.
Lucy: What about music?
Peter: Dan you know, my cousin has just started playing in a band and they need practice so
theyre happy to play for free.

Peter: They do cover versions of old classics so basically songs that everyone will know. Theyll
probably do a couple of sets and play for an hour or so.
Lucy: Great! So all we need to do now is get people to come
Peter: I thought we could put an ad in the local paper. Ive already written a short article which I hope
theyll run for us. It says a bit about the charity and what were hoping to do with the money
we raise. Its such a great cause after all.
Lucy: Fingers crossed theyll oblige. But I think we should produce some flyers and obviously well
have to get tickets printed. Im sure my boss will let me use the photocopier at work so Ill
design something simple and then copy a few hundred. We can put them through doors and
on the notice board at work.
Peter: Its all coming together so I suggest we have another meeting next Thursday.

Ive been suffering for a while now, but when I went to the doctor she couldnt find anything wrong with me.
She suggested having some blood tests though, in case Im anaemic. Its just that if I get up quickly, you
know if Ive been in bed or sitting on the sofa, everything starts going round and round. Its a really strange

Speaker C
Ive been in bed for days now with a high temperature. One minute Im really hot and have to throw the

aching as well and even my skin is sensitive. I just hope I get better soon.

Speaker D
We went out for a spicy Indian meal yesterday evening and Im not really used to hot food. I hardly slept at
all and Im still feeling rather ill. I cant face the idea of having something to eat yet as my stomach is
making very strange noises. I think Ill just stay at home and rest today and hope that it passes.

Speaker E

Jess: And what are you going to be doing?
Mark: Thats just it. Im not sure yet. My aim though is to get a job working with children in India. I know
someone whos just done that and they had a great time. Obviously it was very upsetting to see
how poor the children are, but it was also very rewarding to think that you could actually do

Jess: So why are your parents against you doing something like that? After all, it would be an

Mark: I know! but no, they want me to stay here and either go straight to university or get a job and
save money towards my tuition fees. Its just ridiculous. And the worst of it is, if I manage to
persuade them that going to India would be a valuable thing to do, Id probably have to ask them

Mark: Mmm, I suppose I could. I hadnt actually thought of that. But what about you?
Jess: Im going to work in Germany as an au pair.
Mark: You and kids?!! What do you know about looking after children?

U9&10
A
One of Englands best kept secrets, the Larmer Tree music and arts festival takes place every year in July.
Traditionally it starts with a concert on the Wednesday and runs through until late on the Sunday night.
B
Getting to and from the venue without a car is a little challenging. The nearest train station is several
kilometres away and the local bus stops about 5 kilometres from the entrance to the grounds so unless you
want to walk, I would recommend sharing a taxi.
C
Set in deepest Dorset, south-west England, the Larmer Tree gardens were created in the nineteenth century
as a place for workers to enjoy fresh air. Today the gardens are used as a venue for weddings and for the
annual festival. With secret lakes and beautiful lawns, it really is a magical space.
D
Although you can buy day tickets, most people choose to stay for the whole time. There are excellent
camping facilities for those with tents or camper vans and there is 24-hour security so you can safely leave
your possessions while you go off and enjoy the party.
E
Although July is theoretically summer, the English climate is notoriously unpredictable so while there will be
some sun at some point, there is also every chance of rain! Take sun cream and sun hats for lazy afternoons
sunbathing on the grass and waterproof coats, boots and umbrellas just in case theres a thunderstorm.
F
With over 70 artists appearing on different stages, theres something to suit every taste. Whether youre
interested in African rhythms or traditional folk, blues or reggae, I guarantee it wont be long before youre on
your feet and dancing.
G
The festival is truly a great experience for the whole family, young and old. Festival goers come from all over the
country to meet up with old friends and make new ones. Even if you turn up alone, you wont be alone for long.
H
There are 150 free workshops with plenty for the children to do. There is a theme every year and on the
Sunday afternoon, there is a carnival procession for parents and children to show what they have created
over the previous three days.
I
But Larmer isnt only about music. You also have the chance to enjoy a little retail therapy. With stalls selling
anything from jewellery to musical instruments, clothes to paintings, there is something for everyone. And if
you run out of cash, youll be able to use your credit card so theres no excuse!
J
If you camp, you will probably bring most of your own food but the festival experience wouldnt be complete
without a big bowl of curry or a traditional English sausage. Everything is fresh and tasty and youll have the
chance to try food youve never come across before.
K
So, if youre looking for a relaxing break in beautiful surroundings, what better place than the Larmer Tree?
Youll leave the stresses of your normal life behind and enter a magical world.

One of the great pleasures of travelling is learning about different cultures and customs, but of course there
can also be misunderstandings (0) A. In this weeks Travel the world well be giving you a few dos and
donts to help you.

Bulgaria on the Black Sea in south-eastern Europe, is a country that has recently become quite popular as it
has a beautiful coastline for summer beach holidays (1) E. It can, however, be a puzzling place for the first-
time visitor. To most people a shake of the head means no while a nod of the head means yes. In Bulgaria
(2) H so dont be surprised if there is some confusion when youre asking for directions or for information. (3)
B An elderly lady was trying to sell me some pears, but they didnt look very tasty so I didnt want to buy any,
but of course I kept shaking my head and she kept giving me more and more so I ended up buying a kilo of
pears I didnt want.

In many countries in central and eastern Europe (4) D so bear that in mind when you are invited round. Your
host probably wouldnt ask you to remove your shoes, but they would definitely appreciate it. Most people
have house shoes for guests (5) K. It is also customary to take flowers as a gift if youre invited to
somebodys house, but remember to take an odd number (1, 3, 5, etc.) (6) F.

Any visitor to the UK will know that the British have a reputation for being very polite so (7) C even if your
knowledge of English is very limited. You will discover that if you step on someones foot by mistake, they
will often actually apologise to you! Its also a good idea to practise the art of talking about the weather (8) G
and do remember to form an orderly queue. If you try and get on the bus without waiting your turn, someone
will soon say something!

(9) I, taking a bath in Japan. For those of us who are used to having a quick shower in the morning,
Japanese bath time seems quite strange. First of all, the bath is only for relaxation because you wash
yourself before you get into it and all the members of the family will then use the same water. Well, at least
everybody is already clean!

If you have any travel tips or funny experiences to share, (10) J.

A when you arent aware of these cultural differences

B I remember my first experience when buying some fruit in the market.
C a please and thank you is always advisable
D it is customary to take your shoes off when entering someones house
E and spectacular mountains for winter skiing

XX Read the email. Are the statements true (T) or false (F)?
U3&4
Hi Annie

How are you and how are the kids? Did you have a good holiday? It seems like ages since we saw each
other and it might be quite a bit longer if things dont get back to normal soon!

I was expecting to be back in the UK by now, but unfortunately due to the chaos caused by that volcanic
eruption in Iceland, Im still in Prague. I cant remember if I told you, but I organised a trip here as a surprise
birthday present for one of my friends not quite the surprise Id intended though! I couldnt believe my eyes
when I turned on the television and saw the first pictures of the eruption. Natural disasters like those really
remind you just how small we humans are and just how powerful the forces of nature are, dont they?

Whenever anything like that happens, your first thought is for the people and the animals of course, but who
could have predicted the international chaos that would follow? We had breakfast as normal and discussed
what time Ben should leave for the airport to catch his flight home. Wed left the television on and thats
when we realised that no one would be going anywhere. It was impossible to call the airport so we went on
to the airlines website where we read that all flights in central and northern Europe had been cancelled.

And that was three days ago. Ben had to be back in the UK for an important meeting so we had to find a way
for him to leave. All the trains and ferries were booked up, but luckily there were a few coach tickets
available so off he went and I decided to stay here and hope for the best.

It is amazing to think that something happening on a tiny island near the North Pole can affect the entire
world. We really do live in a global village where everything is inter-connected and as the chaos continues,
you realise how much we all depend on one another. You would never think, for example, that people
growing roses in Kenya are losing money because the planes that would normally fly their roses to the UK
cant leave. Its incredible, isnt it?

Anyway, as Im here and have stopped stressing, Ive decided to go hiking in the hills for a few days. Luckily
I brought most of my walking stuff with me so Ive got my boots and fleece and Im sure I can borrow a
rucksack from someone. The countryside around here is lovely and the walking trails are very good so I
might as well make the most of it and hope that things return to normal soon.
Give my love to the children and hopefully see you next week.
Love

Keeping fit
Marina
Ive just started going to zumba which is the latest craze to come over to the UK. (0) A and now Im totally
hooked! Its a great workout as it combines dance and aerobic exercise, but the great thing is that you can
do it at your own level of fitness. I love Latin music, you know: samba, salsa, merengue, etc. so you basically
dance to those Latin rhythms while toning all your muscles. (1) G and now there are over 40. If you like
dancing and want to get toned, Id definitely recommend it.
Martin
For me keeping fit is not so much about the physical (2) D. From the outside it doesnt look as though youre doing
much, but I can really feel the effects the next day. We spend part of every lesson meditating and then we do a
sequence of exercises which the teacher chooses. I try to practise at home every day as well (3) K.
Penny
(4) H As there was nothing to lose, I went along with some colleagues and now weve set up our own group
every Monday lunchtime. Although its not aerobic exercise as such, it uses all the muscles and even some
you didnt know you had! I suppose its more to do with muscle tone and strengthening of the core of the
body. (5) B and this has really helped.
Catherine
Im a bit of a fitness freak and do some kind of exercise every day. (6) C People laugh when I tell them but it
is actually quite physically demanding and not particularly easy for women who are not used to the
movement of the hips. At the end of every term we put on a performance in the local village hall and we have
a chance to put on the most amazing bright outfits.
Tony
As I work in an office I get very little exercise during the day (7) J. I usually go three or four times a week and
I do a workout for about half an hour. My job is very stressful so its a good way of getting rid of my
frustration. It also helps to keep my weight down. Sometimes I dont really feel like going, (8) E, but Im
always pleased afterwards.
Debbie
I took up jogging because I wanted to run in the London marathon. (9) I, but I found a nice route which takes
me through the park so Im not running along the roads. Its quite addictive in a way and I like the fact that
you challenge yourself. You always want to go just that little bit faster and break your own record. (10) F, but
Ill definitely continue with the jogging for my own well-being.

A Id seen lots of posters advertising new classes and decided to go along to see what all the fuss was about
B I used to suffer from a bad back quite often
C My favourite by far, though, is belly dancing.
D but more about the mental balance so I attend yoga classes twice a week
E especially in the winter when its cold and dark
F Im not sure that Ill actually take part in the marathon
G I started the class six weeks ago when there were only 20 people
H I discovered Pilates recently as someone came into the office offering the first class free.
I At first I found it really hard and I could hardly run at all without feeling breathless
J so I like to go to the gym after work

had to look at us in a certain way (4) E. I dont remember any other teachers having our respect in the way
that she did. It was obvious to all of us that she was passionate about teaching (5) K. She always gave us a
lot of homework and loads of tests and to this day I can remember some of the poetry we had to learn by
heart. (6) C and I now also teach French.

When I think of my school days I think of my best friend Emma. On our first day at secondary school we
ended up sharing a desk and from then on we did everything together. (7) F We were both pretty competitive
and always wanted to come top. Emma was much better than me at Maths and the science subjects, (8) D
so we would help one another with revision before exams. Although we dont live in the same place now we
still speak to each other every week.

William Logan. Yes, everybody in the school knew William. (9) I Detention day was Thursday and nine times
out of ten, youd find William there. Its not that he was bad exactly, but I think the teachers just couldnt
handle his attitude. (10) H He often skived off when he was bored, which was most of the time, and hed be
seen wandering around town. Somehow despite being absent so often, he managed to pass his exams and
Ive heard hes doing really well now.

A Here are some of the entries we received.

B I looked around and lots of the other children were crying.
C Its thanks to her that I became a teacher
D while I was good at English and History,
E and we would immediately stop talking and pay attention
F We lived in the same street so we used to do our homework together as well.
G It was all green and very smart.
H He was very cheeky, but not quite rude.
I He was always getting into trouble.
J I was so excited and felt so grown up
K and because of that I think we all wanted to do well

XX Read the web forum. Are the statements true (T) or false (F)?
U7&8
Jo
I came across an old Mel Gibson film called Signs the other day. I remember it had a lot of publicity when it came
out but, having watched it, I cant really see what all the fuss was about. The plot seemed pretty silly to me lots
of extraterrestrial activity to do with crop circles and aliens and stuff like that. Although I didnt think much of the
film, I decided to look into the crop circle phenomenon and discovered loads of websites on the internet with some
amazing pictures. Perhaps the film wasnt as unbelievable as Id thought. There certainly is a lot of information out
there and lots of different theories as to how these circles appear. Apparently 90% of them are to be found in
southern England, near places like Stonehenge. Believers say that theyre signs from the earth with messages for
us. Rational people, or cynics, would say that theyre man-made. Im not sure what to think. Ive always believed
that there could be other forms of intelligent life out there and maybe this is their way of communicating with us.
Max
I havent seen Signs, but I certainly made a lot of money from it in 2002 because thousands of tourists came
over to our part of England looking for crop circles after theyd seen the film. I have a caf not far from
Stonehenge. Business is steady, but that year it went crazy! I had to take on more staff and extend our
opening hours. Friends of mine set up a company running crop circle tours. They hired a big bus and drove
the tourists round the area. The season is short because once the crops are ready to be harvested, thats the
end of it, but we certainly made a good profit that year.
Clare
I live in England and Ive seen them with my own eyes. In my opinion, theres no way they could be made by
humans. If you look down on them you see that the patterns are perfect so how could you create something like that
from the ground? You wouldnt be able to see what you were doing. Theyre so complex it would be impossible.
Luke
They must be made by humans. Are you saying you believe in little green men in spaceships? Why would they
come and spend time making these patterns? Im sure theyve got better things to do!
Brenda
Dont you think its possible that there really are messages in the patterns? I dont know enough about the
phenomenon but I do know that a lot of research has been done so Id like to keep an open mind.
Donna
I was on holiday in England Im from the States and as Id been intrigued by the film, I decided to
see for myself what all the fuss was about. Yes, I was one of those crazy tourists who went on a crop circle
tour, bought the T-shirt and the books and went to the caf! Im sure though that there is some special kind
of energy around the circles. I stood in the middle of one of them and felt that there was something there.
Some other people in the group said they felt it too.
0 Jo has just watched Signs. T
1 She wasnt very impressed by the film. T
2 She has done some online research. T
