PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

Do not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications like Ibuprofen, for 14 days

prior to surgery.
These medications can thin the blood and cause bleeding during surgery. As little
as one aspirin can thin the blood for up to two weeks. (See list of additional medications
to be avoided before surgery, at the end of these instructions).

Do not drink alcohol for seven days prior to surgery.

Alcohol can thin the blood and cause the procedure to be more difficult.

If you smoke cigarettes, we advise you to stop smoking at least one month prior to
your scheduled surgery.
Many studies have shown that cigarette smoking impedes wound healing. In
order to ensure the best healing and survival of the transplanted hair we suggest that our
patients do not smoke.

Do not take Vitamin E or B-complex vitamins for seven days prior to surgery.
These vitamins can thin the blood slightly and cause the procedure to be more
difficult.

Avoid strenuous exercise and/or heavy lifting one week prior to surgery.
There is some evidence that this can also thin the blood. Light exercise at about
50% of normal is okay before surgery.

Wash your hair the morning of surgery.

Do not use any hair products such as hair spray, mousse, gel, etc., the morning of
surgery. Every day for two weeks prior to your operation, shampoo your scalp/hair with a
medicated shampoo such as one containing tea-tree oil. It is very important to shampoo
vigorously to remove any scale or flaking.

Do not cut the hair on the back and side of your head before surgery.
This will make it more difficult to hide the suture line. If possible, let your hair
grow a little longer in the back (about 2-3 inches).

Drink plenty of fluids and eat a light meal the night before, and the morning of
surgery.
This will help prevent dizziness and nausea.
Do not drink cofee the morning of surgery.
You will be given something to relax during surgery. The caffeine can work
against helping you relax. Decaffeinated drinks are acceptable.

Wear comfortable, loose pants and a button down shirt the day of surgery.
Do not wear a tee-shirt, as this is difficult to pull over the head after surgery.

Bring a clean or new baseball cap, or similar type of hat to wear home after surgery.
If the cap is not clean or new, there is a possibility that an infection may occur.

You will be given a sedative to help you relax through the surgery.
It will still be in your system after surgery, therefore, you must arrange for
someone to pick you up and drive you home after surgery.

Travel Plans

If you are from out of town, please make your plane, hotel, and car reservations early in
order to receive the best rates. We will mail you a hotel list. Sometimes it is better to call the
local phone number of the hotel; they will give you our special rate. If you need help with
reservations, we will be happy to assist you. If you live out of town, it is not recommended that
you fly home, or drive long distances the night after surgery. You should make arrangements to
spend the night locally and return home in the morning.

NOTE: Please make arrangements for someone to drive you home following surgery, even if
you live a short distance from the clinic.

Massage the head:

It is very important to massage the donor area at least 1 week before surgery in order to
soften the skin in this area, which will facilitate the removal of the strip and will reduce any
tension that you may feel at the level of the scar after your surgery. This massage will help you
to increase the skin's elasticity. If possible you should start massaging your scalp 2 4 weeks
prior to surgery, for approximately 10 minutes or better yet 30 minutes per day. Moreover, it is
recommended to leave your hair long on the back of your head so that it will cover the sutures
after surgery.

Please report to the clinic on time.

Do not drive to the clinic on the day of surgery.
Do not bring valuable things with you to the clinic
Deposit and Payment Policy.
We require a deposit to hold your appointment. The deposit must be paid when you
schedule surgery. It will be credited toward the procedure fee on the day of your procedure. You
can also mail your deposit in the form of a personal check, cashiers check or money order.
Make your check payable to Cutis skin clinic private limited. Until your deposit is received, the
date you have chosen is still considered open and may be taken by another patient. This policy is
necessary, as we have five surgical assistants and a surgical room reserved for the time of
surgery. If a patient does not keep his/her scheduled appointment, we are still responsible to pay
these costs. This surgery deposit is usually non-refundable unless we are notified at least ten days
prior to surgery. Under special circumstances we may make an exception to this policy, however,
it is determined on a case-by-case basis. Payment is due in full on the day of surgery and can be
made by check, cash, or credit card.

POST-OP SURGERY INSTRUCTIONS
After surgery, the transplant area will be cleaned of blood and crust. Don't touch the scalp
until the next day. Wait about 18 hours before resuming any care. You can take a shower
(body and donor area only), without wetting the recipient area. Just be careful, because
movement could increase the risk of popping the grafts out. You can take a bath, but do not
submerge the head.

* Avoid bleeding and high pressure on your head because it could dislodge the grafts !

The first night :

The first night is the most important. Avoid touching the grafts because they could fall out of
the incisions. Sleep in a semi-upright position: try to sleep with 2 or 3 pillows to elevate your
head. Sleep in this position the 3 first nights following surgery.

WHAT CAN INCREASE SCALP PRESSURE ?

1. Avoid sexual activity for 3 days.
2. Avoid lifting heavy items. Do not lift for 2 weeks
3. You may do a light workout in 1 week.
4. Dont bump your head. (car doors, shelves, shower head, trees.)
5. Dont bend over to pick up an item on the ground for 1 week.
6. Dont hit your recipient area with direct shower pressure for 2 weeks, use a cup to
gently rinse.

WHAT CAN INCREASE THE BLEEDING ?

1. MEDICATION: Aspirin, NSAID (Ibuprofin), and vitamins in general. Avoid these for 5
days..

2. ALCOHOL: Avoid for 3 days.

1. CAFFEINE: Coffee, Coke, Tea, ect. Tend to increase pressure, therefore increases
bleeding. Decrease the quantity you drink.
2. Some outside factors could impair the growth of your grafts:
A. Direct sunshine exposure for a long period of time. Avoid outdoor activities, or wear a hat
and use a strong sunscreen.
Avoid sun exposure for 3-6 months.
B. SMOKING: Decrease as much as you can.
C. Swimming pools because of the chlorine. Avoid pools for 2 weeks.
IN SUMMARY, JUST TAKE IT EASY FOR ONE WEEK.

RECIPIENT AND DONOR AREA CARE

It is mandatory to wash your hair at least once a day. We also encourage our patient to
keep their recipient area moist, (or wet) to decrease the itching and speeding up the
healing process.

RECIPIENT AREA

18 hours after your procedure should be the best time to start washing your hair. You can use a
regular non medicated shampoo or use the one we provide specifically for hair transplant.

Instructions: for 1st week.

1. Gently wet your hair.

2. Lather the shampoo in your hand and make it soapy.

3. Apply the shampoo to your head. Just dab it up and down, (do not scrub).

4. Rinse it by gently pouring water with a cup. (Some people block with their hand, the

shower pressure and let the liquid flow gently onto the scalp)
5. Dry your hair using a bath cloth (just dab it) or hair dryer, turned on cool setting.

Instructions for 2nd week:

Repeat the same events the second week. But, you can start massaging your scalp with
fingertips while applying the shampoo. This helps the scabs to fall off. After the second week,
you can go back to a regular shower. We recommend you rub the scalp aggressively to remove
the remaining scabs.
DONOR AREA
Be aggressive the day after the procedure. Rub the area with the shampoo and hit with a good
shower
pressure to rinse it. After drying the area, apply a layer of Bacitracin or Neosporin for two to
three days.
WHAT TO EXPECT POST-OP?

DONOR

Day 1 Post-op: You may have some oozing and pain. Just apply pressure with a bath cloth for
up to 5 minutes. FOR PAIN We have prescribed pain killer and you can apply an ice bag to the
donor area only (20 min on - 20 minutes off). It reduces the pain and reduces the tightness
sensation in the back. Do not apply an ice pack to the grafted or recipient area.

Day 3 Post-op: You may have some swelling in the forehead and eyes. To avoid that,
start taking an anti-swelling medication. (Prednisone for 5 days starting day 1, post-op)
You may also apply a head band over the forehead to collect the fluid above the band.
Then use your fingers to sweep the fluid toward the sides of the head so that the fluid
can drain lateral to the eyes rather than into the eyes. Swelling will cause you no long
term harm though it can frighten you. If you do swell, apply ice pack to the front. (15
min. on - 30 min. off) Your scabs will turn brown with crust on it. This is normal.

Day 4 to 7 Post-op: The scabs will start to fall off. This will occur for a two week
period. The scalp usually turns pink, due to the inflammation and increased blood flow
to the traumatized area. It can last one to three months in some patients and gradually
dissipates.

3 Months Post-op: The first growth begins to appear.

6 Months Post-op: This is a good time to schedule a follow up consultation to assess

the growth. (50 to 60 % of your hair should be growing)

MEDICATIONS
a) Pain Medication 1-2 pills by mouth, every 4-6 hours as needed. Start taking just
after the procedure to control pain. Many patients have no pain, so it is not always
necessary. Some side effects of this medication are drowsiness and dizziness. Dont do
anything that will require you to be alert such as driving, or manipulating sharp
instruments.
(b) Sleeping Medication. 1 pill at bedtime, as needed.
(c) Anti swelling Medication. Prednisone. Decreasing dosage for 5 days. (20mg, 15mg, 10mg,
5mg and 5 mg). Take 4 pills the first day, 3 pills the second day, 2 pills the third day, 1 pill the
fourth day and 1 pill the fifth day. Take it with food, as it may upset your stomach.

(d) Antibiotic. Cephalexin. 1 pill twice a day, until gone. Please notify us if you have any
allergies to antibiotics.

(e) Cream. Hydrocortisone Cream-2.5%. Put on DONOR AREA every 8 hours for the first
week. This is for inflammation and to promote healing.
(f) Tylenol Extra Strength and Ibuprofen. Tylenol Extra Strength: 2 pills, 3 times a day. This is
for minor pain. Ask us prior to taking Ibuprofen.
All the medications that you take, which are not vital or necessary, please refrain from
until 3 to 5 days after the procedure. You may have your first haircut or color/dye 14
days after your procedure. Do not shave your head with a razor for at least one month.

Decreased sensitivity

You may feel decreased sensitivity in the recipient area: do not worry. Over the next 4 to 12
months sensitivity will be restored.
