WRITING TASK 1 Model Answer

The two pie charts illustrate the amount of time per week men and women, between the age of 21 and
40, spend on leisure activities in the US.
From the data we can see firstly that the total number of hours differs slightly for the sexes. Men, it
seems, spend approximately 33.3 hours a week on leisure time whereas for women the figure is
around 33.1 hours. We can also see some variation in the time spent on different categories of leisure.

IELTS HIGHER
For men, most of their leisure time seems to be spent on the TV and the Internet. This activity
accounts for nearly a half of the total at 16.2 hours, and there is quite a sharp contract here between
the time spent by women on this category, just 9.2 hours, or just over a half of their total leisure time.
Returning to the data for men, the second largest consumer of their leisure time is Other Leisure at
Home. This makes up approximately 8.6 hours or just under a quarter. So we can see that roughly
three-quarters of men's leisure time is taken up with just two of the leisure categories: TV and
Internet, and Other Leisure at Home. The remaining quarter, approximately, is taken up with the
other three categories: Socialising; Eating Out, Cinema, Pubs; and Sports, Walking which account for
4,1 hours, 3.3 hours and 1.1 hours per week, respectively.
In contrast, for women, the amount of time spent on Other Leisure at Home is a whole 2 hours more
than that for men. In addition, time spent on the other three categories is also higher in each case:
Socialising 6.1 hours; Eating Out, Cinema, Pubs 5.3 hours; and Sports, Walking 1.9 hours.
In conclusion, it seems that while the total time spent weekly on leisure by the males and females
does not differ greatly, the spread of this time is more balanced for women than men, in the US.

WRITING TASK 2 Model Answer

It is quite right that top sports people should be paid a lot of money.

It seems indisputable that top sports people are often paid huge salaries. Many people feel these
salaries are paid in return for a fairly small contribution to society. However, in order to decide
whether this situation is right or not, we need to consider other factors and not solely the
remuneration paid to these sports people.

IELTS HIGHER
On the face of it, it seems that certain top sports people earn enormous sums of money for doing
something they enjoy and for doing something which does not contribute greatly to our society. For
example, if we compare these salaries to the top salaries of doctors or nurses, we would see a huge
difference. It seems to be this kind of comparison which, for many people, highlights the unfairness
of this situation.

On the other hand, the fact that people enjoy their work and the fact that they are paid much more
than people in other professions is largely irrelevant. In addition, in this case, what some people see as
a small contribution to society may not, in reality, be so small. Consider for example, the income and
the employment which some top sports people create. While we can see that they are benefiting
personally, the economy is also benefiting. We should also not forget that these people are role
models for young people, and the not-so young, not only in sport but in other areas of life, too. This
contribution is clearly impossible to measure, but clearly valuable.

In conclusion, while it is easy to understand why the salaries of top sports is often criticised, we need
to keep in mind the bigger picture and the contributions to society they make including tangible
contributions to the economy as well as intangible contributions they make as role models.
