Large drug bust
sees locals charged

Nine Strathmore and area residents were ar-

rested on various drugs and stolen property of-
fenses, following an investigation that began in

Forty-one-year-old Strathmore resident Craig
Coffey is charged with instructing the commis-
sion of an offence for a criminal organization,
Page 19 in addition to 27 other charges related to drugs
and stolen property.
Eight other area residents were arrested and
charged with over 30 offences related to drugs
and stolen property: Kurtis Goett, 19, from
Strathmore; Gabriella Michaud, 20, from Strath-
more; Michael Fittler, 27, from Strathmore; Tracy
Brown, 38, from Strathmore; Echo Brandt, 39,
from Strathmore; Paul Craig, 42, from Wheatland
County; Michael MacCharles, 49, from Strath-
more; and James MacCormack, 59, from Glei-
Bisons advance chen.
The joint investigation between ALERT Medi-
cine Hats organized crime team, Medicine Hat
Police Service and RCMP Gleichen, saw the sei-
zure of approximately $75,000 worth of cash
and drugs, including methamphetamine, crack
cocaine and marijuana, and approximately
$450,000 worth of stolen property including
pick-up trucks, trailers, recreational vehicles and
heavy equipment which ALERT believes were

Wheatland County tasked their plan-
ning staff with a complex puzzle, when
they asked them to find resolutions for the
Lakes of Muirfield Direct Control quanda-
ries that plagued council in 2016.

On Feb. 21, staff forwarded a draft bylaw
with six options, amending the Direct Con-
trol 9 bylaw 2007-56. The Feb. 21 agenda
attachments include the draft. Council felt
none of the options really fit the reality of
the Muirfield solution they needed

give us some direction to staff and we
can put something together, bring it for-
ward, and go to first reading and public
hearings. As much clarity as we can give,

Wacky winter wonderland
Children created several winter themed crafts, such as paper and beaded
snowflakes, icicles and their own unique hot chocolate mixes during the

on March 4 for all firefighters
working within the munici-
pal boundaries of Wheatland
County.
Following a cocktail hour
and dinner, years of service
awards were handed out to
firefighters who have been
in service for five, 10, 15
years and so on.

treat all those who we encounter from
day to day. Those who have something

As Christ set the example of compassion
in his own dealing with people, may
we also do that. In his own words he
reminded us that when we do things for
others, it is as if we are doing it for him.
Feeding the hungry and clothing the
naked. Visiting the lonely and welcoming
the stranger. And it is not just about doing
it for those we love, those we care for. Our
words and actions of compassion are to
be extended to all people.
Just consider for a moment how this
community of ours could be strengthened
and united, if we each took a bit more time
to reach out and care for others. If you
believe it could make a difference, then I
encourage you, in Christs name and by his
example, to allow it to begin with you.
Live your life, reaching out and making
a difference. When you see opportunity,
when you hear a need, when you see
something to celebrate step up.
Simply put, its about putting our best foot

Pet food bank opens

The downturn in the economy means many Al-
bertans are struggling to make ends meet. Indeed,
the number of food bank recipients and Christmas
Hamper recipients in Strathmore and Wheatland
County this past year is higher than numbers of
other recent years.
For many, feeding a family doesnt just mean
ensuring there is food on the table; it also means
making sure there is food for furry four-legged
family members as well.
Recently, a pet food bank opened in the Strath-
more and Drumheller area to ensure animals in
need of food get fed, and that owners can give
their pets the necessities of life.
A group like this is overdue. I see too many sad
things that I dont want to see, said Marie Jen-
nings, owner and operator of the Alberta Lost Pet
Locator and Rescue Society (ALPLRS). Along with
her husband Kenny, Jennings opened ALPLRS six
years ago.
I see a lot of pets that arent neglected its not
neglect because people are doing what they can
for their animals but some people just need help
or the animals suffer.
ALPLRS is a fully licenced and county- and vet-
approved rescue and sanctuary for surrendered
pets. The animals are placed in foster care until
they can find a forever home. Animals unfit for
adoption enjoy the rest of their lives at the sanctu-
ary on the Jennings acreage near Strathmore.
Last year, Jennings noticed more pets were be-
ing surrendered in poor, underweight and skinny
conditions. She also noticed more people asking
for cat and dog food on the Strathmore AB Free
Items Facebook page. As an avid animal lover,
she decided to do something about it.
So Jennings started stocking up on dog and cat
food that was donated to her rescue. Once she
had a fair supply of pet food, she approached a
good friend of hers, who lives in Cold Lake, Alta.
and has adopted several pets from ALPLRS, about
her idea to start a pet food bank.
Just before Christmas 2016, the first ALPLRS
Pet Food Bank was opened in Cold Lake, serving
26 families from the area with food for their pets.
Since then Jennings has opened a total of 10 pet
food banks across the province, and aims to open
a minimum of 14 branches.
Jennings has many reliable connections through
ALPLRS, many of whom have volunteered or ac-
cepted her request to set up a pet food bank in the
areas where they live.
These people are all like-minded and they are
dependable. They want to help
the animals, said Jennings,
who oversees the whole op-
eration, but chooses two coor-
dinators to run each area. The
coordinators then choose ap-
proximately four volunteers to
help pick up and drop off food.
Mostly, coordinators keep
a supply of donated food and
pet-related items in their house
before handing it out to fami-
lies in need. A few areas have
storage facilities in the back
of shops which are open once
a week. In the end, Jennings
would like to see a pet food
bank facility opened in each
area so families in need can
get pet food when they need it,
and there is a general drop off

Strathmore and Drumhellers pet food bank of-
ficially opened in the beginning of February this
year and, so far, has served about 15 families on
average each week.
Usually, no paperwork is necessary to sign up
for receiving food to feed pets. However, some
background work is done by Jennings to make
sure people arent abusing the system. Code tags
are removed from all food and accessories before
being handed out. In some instances, food and
treats are also re-bagged so that they cannot be
resold or advertised to sell.
Jennings said it can be hard for someone in
need to ask for help, and she doesnt want to fur-
ther create problems for those people.
How would you like it if you had to ask for
help because you are broke? No one likes it. If
someone is brave enough to reach out to get help
then I am not going to start questioning and inter-
rogating them, said Jennings. The way I look at
it, I will give them the benefit of the doubt, and
if they prove to me that they arent truthful and
they dont need the food, then the worst thing
Ive done is feed their [pets] good meals for a few
weeks. In the end, I just want to see the animals
taken care of.
In most cases, families will receive enough food
for two weeks time, usually at most two bags of
food a week.
Its not much, but its something to help. Its not
just the food, I want to give them all the other ne-
cessities animals need, said Jennings, who added
they only hand out medium- to high-quality foods
so pets are getting nutritious meals. We want to
make sure the [animals] are getting a really good
quality, satisfying meal, not just something to keep
them full, but something to really help the [ani-
mal].
Currently, the pet food bank helps all species
of animals except farm animals: dogs and cats,
hamsters and bunnies, birds and turtles. If there
are donations received for all those types of ani-
mals, they will have food and supplies available
for them.
The pet food bank also accepts any donation
that is pet related: hard and soft food, litter, treats,
toys, leashes and collars, animal coats, feeding
bowls and more. Gas cards are also appreciated
as coordinators travel a lot for deliveries and it is
all on their own time and dime. They are currently
in great need of canned and dry cat food, and
canned dog food.
Future plans include hopes of partnering with
local vets to help families in need have access to
lower cost spay and neuter fees, partnering with
stores to have donation bins,
setting up a fixed location for
the pet food bank to be based
in and then fine-tuning the sys-
tem.
Currently both ALPLRS and
the ALPLRS Pet Food Bank
are considered non-profit orga-
nizations. They have applied for
charity status and are waiting
for the request to be processed.

Storm water management group seeks solutions

Storm water issues have long plagued
land owners, municipalities, environ-
mental and industry groups.
Alberta WaterSmart has identified
that insufficient water is a significant
limiting factor in economic and popu-
lation growth patterns. Climate change
will also be a factor in future trends in
storm water retention patterns.
The WaterSmart website, albertawa-
tersmart.com, states that through rec-
ognizing a shared ownership of the sys-
tems current challenges, surrounding
communities and the Western Irrigation
District (WID) have come together as
partners and formed the Co-operative
Stormwater Management Initiative
(CSMI).
The Co-operative Stormwater Man-
agement Initiative is a great example
of diverse interests working together to
achieve a common goal of good water
management, said Dr. P Kim Sturgess,
spokesperson for the CSMI.
CSMI partners include the City of
Chestermere, the City of Calgary, Rocky
View County (RVC), the Town of Strath-
more, Wheatland County and the WID.
Resource facilitators and consultants in-
cluded MPE engineering, Ducks Unlim-
ited, Bow River Basin Council, Calgary
Regional Partnership (CRP), and Alber-
ta Environment and Parks participates
as an observer.
Urban development is placing pres-
sure on surrounding water supply sys-
tems and WID irrigation works. Cur-
rently, communities rely on the WID to
take the burden of storm water over-
flow areas and this causes challenges
for WID maintenance programs. Water
quality concerns include phosphorus,
saline, coliform bacteria counts and to-

flow and water quality to and from the
Bow River, and consider solutions in
long-term planning.
Challenges will be utilizing cross
border boundary solutions, develop-
ing good regional communication, es-
tablishing equal representation of each
members needs and ideas, and com-
pliance with all provincial and federal
guidelines and regulations. WaterSmart
identified that government policy cre-
ates barriers to improving some of the
identified opportunities.
They outline some of the barriers as:
the right to use all types of water men-
tality; understanding how water reuse
may affect meeting river requirements,
including impacts on downstream us-
ers, agreements and aquatic health ob-
jectives; such as, water conservation
objectives, instream flow needs and the
lack of a formal process to evaluate and
approve different types of water reuse
projects.
The partnership is looking at long-
term sustainability solutions for these
issues.
Preliminary studies were done start-
ing in 2012, with the help of the Wa-
terSmart program, where assessment
of necessary infrastructure and de-
veloping issues were pinpointed. In
2013, MPE Engineering was retained
to outline possible options for storm
water management issues. In the next
two years, MPE completed a water bal-
ance and volume control levels, and
stream erosion analysis that will help
the group in future decision making ac-
tions. Wetland analysis regarding water
patterns is also considered.

Local credit union announces first quarter results
Calgary, AB Connect First Credit Union continues to post strong financial
results through the first quarter of 2017, despite the ongoing challenges in the local
economic environment.
Income before taxes reached nearly $4.5 million for the first three months of fiscal
2017 and sets the Credit Union on track for another successful year of operations.
Strong annual earnings has contributed to a solid capital base at the Credit Union,
exceeding regulatory targets, and positioning the Credit Union for continued and
sustainable growth in future years.
Total assets decreased by $18 million through the first three months to $4.3 billion.
During the same period, total loans increased by $9 million to $3.7 billion as of
January 31, 2017. Member deposits decreased by $14 million to $3.9 billion. Connect

approximately $8.8 billion on January 31, 2017.

There seems to be a small misunderstanding at the Legion regarding children. Legion Policy
states that ALL children must leave the Canteen by 7 pm. They then can go, with their parents, to
the Main Hall, WHERE THEY MUST BE SUPERVISED AT ALL TIMES!! They must be sitting and under
control of their parents and cannot be running around. Their safety, and that of our patrons, are of
our utmost concern. Children aged 15 and under must leave the Legion by 9 pm. Your cooperation
in this regard is very, very much appreciated. This, of course, does not apply to private functions
although the children in attendance must stay in the main hall, and not go into the canteen.
Verbal abuse against anyone either working or volunteering at the Legion, by anyone, will not
be tolerated, and the offender will be asked to leave the premises. We are all doing our very best
to make your visit a pleasant experience, and sometimes things might not agree with you, but to
take it out on the people working there, is unfair, unkind and very hurtful, and totally unacceptable.

There are challenges to reading rights that are
causing concerns globally. They include access to
information, the cost of obtaining reading mate-
rial, suppression of the written and spoken word,
and technologys impact on the need for reading.
The Freedom to Read website, freedomtoread.
ca, provides a wealth of information for support-
ing the right to read, but also lists 100 works
placed on censorship lists by those seeking to
suppress various points of view.
Security and monitoring by government and
commercial interests concern Canadians, as read-
ing choices and website use are data mined to
persuade, sell and influence decisions. There are
concerns privacy rights are not protected, and ev-
ery time the I agree box is ticked on apps and
digital sites, Canadians give away their rights and
freedoms on what they read and access.
Economic constraints can curtail the freedom
to read. Public libraries are feeling the economic
crunch on supplying patrons a cost-effective way
to read while keeping their fees down. It is one
reason the Strathmore Municipal Library has come
up with some innovative fundraising programs to
support keeping the library viable.
Costs to provide affordable digital services are
also constantly rising, with the need to pay for
proprietary sites and provider fees. New book
prices put magazines and books as a luxury item
for many people. Even used booksellers, who of-
ten halve the price of the original item, face in-
creasing costs to keep doors open and provide
reading material to the public.
Anyone who has a college student buying texts
for the new term book list recognizes how cost
affects the chance of obtaining a relevant educa-
tion. Students in remote areas, with governments
supported by a smaller tax base, have significant
inequalities to the type of education resources
and access to digital services for learning material,
although some Canadian businesses and govern-
ment grants are moving to improve resources in
those areas.
One charitable organization is Books without
Bounds, started in 2011 by Julia and Emma Mo-
gus, two Ontario teens who are supplying books
to indigenous communities worldwide. They said
they were inspired by a report that states having
as few as 20 books in a home can encourage chil-
dren to read and move on to higher learning lev-
els.
Books also support charitable organizations in
return. The Strathmore 5 for Life society utilizes
book sales to support programming for those in
need.
Some wonder how technology is affecting our
ability to read and write. The abbreviation of the
written language, shortening of messages for digi-
tal bytes, video and film replacing written material,
and the dependency on electronic media, is under
the literary microscope. Supporters for technology
say easy access to information improves childrens
ability to take in knowledge, with the responsibil-
ity on educators to provide the critical thinking
skills, allowing early readers to sift through the
data universe for accurate and appropriate data.
There are things individuals and groups can do
to support literacy: read a book, support library
programs, recycle books, support a literacy char-
ity and share a good story with another person.
Groups can vocalize to legislative committees and
government officials the need to protect freedoms,
speaking out against those infringing on rights,
supporting initiatives to increase literacy-based
skills on an equal basis, and aiding in global pro-
grams to improve literacy.

The Standard 4-H sheep club held their annual
speeches on Mar. 5. Sixteen young members pre-
sented their speeches to the audience; many of
them speaking in public for the first time. Due to the
average age of the speakers and the fact that many
of them are only Cleaver Kids, the speeches werent
judged and instead were just enjoyed by the audi-
ence.

Fule for Thought
Now that Ive hit my Mid 50s, Ive learned a few
things. One is that if I drop something, it better
be important. This means, there are often sharp
flashes of pain if I have to bend over quickly, and
a pen isnt worth it!
In fact, if I do drop something anything, and
its near a student, Im probably going to pause
look at the kid, and see if he/she will get it for
me! Over the years of teaching and coaching, Ive
also been hit many times. From errant golf balls
just below the belt, to basketballs in the face, to
a volleyball that dumped a colleagues coffee on
me, to a frozen broom ball that made my lips in-
stantly swell, I have often felt like a target!
My answer to this, was to push for a balcony
in our SHS Gym. From up there, in classes like
indoor soccer and the rare games of Dodgeball (I
hate that game for kids), I safely referee! I can see
the game clearly, and I dont have to spend the
time dodging, ducking, dipping, diving, or dodg-
ing (thanks Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story)!
Of course, as with any job, injuries can come
when you least expect them! One staff meeting a
few years ago, we had a presentation on ways to
help students with attention problems. The idea
was to provide some activity in the classroom, to
help them better focus. Students could do their
desk work on exercise balls, so they could be ac-
tive on the balls, enabling them to better work. To
demonstrate this in the staff meeting, about eight
large, bouncy balls were brought in for staff to
try. The staff members enthusiastically bounced,
while taking part in the meetings discussions.
Thats when a glorious thing happened at least
glorious to some of us! One of the teachers ex-
ercise balls burst with an incredibly loud bang!
The teacher collapsed to floor in the shards of
the shiny, blue ball! It was all too much for me,
I collapsed in laughter I could not stop, I was
hysterical! I may have snorted out loud, and Im
not sure, but my bladder may have also leaked a
bit! It was the last time we had exercise balls in a
staff meeting, but it was unforgettable!
Just last week, two things happened that also
brought laughter to my school days. The first was
a pretty sharp comment from a kid near the end
of class. Someone (sounds like a real troublemak-
answered another question as to how long Ive
taught (kids always want to find out stuff about
their teachers).
When I had answered that I was (sadly) 56 and
had taught since 1983, there were a couple of
oohs and ahhs to demonstrate that I was a dino-
saur. In fact, one kid perked up with well, that
makes you fossil Fule!
Ah, todays teens we cant expel them we
cant taze them, either!
I did get some revenge on one student on Thurs-
day, though! Ive only tried this once before in my
years of teaching, and Thursday it worked per-
fectly. I was teaching essay writing to my Grade
11s. Now, essay classes are not the most excit-
ing of lessons to present. That being said, I went
through the hand-out on the active board, told a
few stories to tie in to our fake topic of hope in
our novel, and heck, I even danced a jig, and sang
a bit! Still, one of my guys dozed off, but upright
in a sitting position! I looked at him, called his
name softly, heck I even joked that we could tell
he was dreaming, as he twitched (he mustve been
dreaming about running through fields with the
other puppies)!
Thats when I did it. I made the shush motion
with a finger over my lips, climbed on a student
desk, and set the wall clock ahead two hours!
Then, I motioned for row after row to silently
leave the room! And they did! We all got out
in the hall, and huddled. I even dimmed the light
on the way out! The guy slept on, he mustve had
a tough night I almost felt badly for him al-
most! I let a couple of minutes go by, then jiggled
the door handle, and knocked. Through the door
window cover, I saw him sit up, look at the clock
in a panic, grab his stuff, and he sprinted to the
door! Thats where he met us! We all laughed, and
I told him the good news was he didnt miss his
bus, but the bad news was, he still had a half hour
of English left! Im down to a few years left now,
but Thursday was a day I wont forget! Sometimes,
its the little things in Life!

Family and Community Support Services to work together

Although Strathmore Family and
Community Support Services (FCSS)
and Wheatland FCSS are distinct en-
tities, they do share some common
ground. Recently, coordinators for both
groups met and found some projects
they will work on together.
Strathmore FCSS and Wheatland
FCSS obviously help to support many
of the same community programs
and initiatives, said Catherine Walsh,
Strathmore FCSS coordinator. Because
of this closeness, Strathmore FCSS initi-
ated a meeting with Wheatland to help
build a positive relationship, to discuss
gaps in community services, and to see
that we have the resources to meet the
needs that the community required.
The two groups will jointly design
and produce the 2017 community re-
source booklet, plan and hold two sep-
arate open houses, host the 2017 senior
symposium, work on poverty reduction
initiatives jointly with Strathmore Unit-
ed Way, and seek to improve wellness
issues by looking at senior isolation
behaviour, as well as investigate youth
programming.
There will be ongoing meetings
twice a month to ensure good coopera-
tion and communication in serving the
needs of the residents of Strathmore
and Wheatland and district area.

Spring open house

The Town of Strathmore is holding an event for
the public to showcase its departments, services
and events.
The open house will be held at the Civic Cen-
tre on April 10, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
We will be informing everyone on our 150
Canada projects event and will be providing a
lot of information on each department of specif-
ic interest to the public, said Jennifer Sawatzky,
legislative services coordinator with the Town
of Strathmore.
A kids zone will be available, so parents can
browse and converse. Town vehicles will also
be on display. Those attending will be eligible
for door prizes and snacks will be served.
According to Sawatzky, the event will be in-
teractive.
Each town department will have a booth
with information and receive questions from
the public, she said. It is a similar format as
a trade show, with the Canada 150 event front
and centre. Definitely there will be a lot of room
for questions and one-on-one conversations.
It is one of the ways we want to create and
promote information on what we are doing,
said James Thackray, chief administrative officer
with the Town of Strathmore. It will highlight
dozens and dozens of services that we provide
every day.
SAVING NOW AND PLANNING
FOR THE FUTURE
Strathmore town council supported the re-
placement of streetlights with LED lights, sav-
ing the town about $26,278 annually. Conver-
sion will cost about $585,000.
There are 1,170 streetlights to be replaced.
The cost per light will be about $500.
At some point in time, if the town fails to
convert to LED lighting, the question will be
asked why the town had failed to go to a more
efficient LED lighting, said Mel Tiede, Town of
Strathmores director of corporate services.
He said he compared Fortis offer with simi-
lar replacements costs and Fortis came in un-
der the $600-800 average.
He said the lights last longer as well, and the
bonus is Fortis is carrying the upfront capital
costs.
When asked what the incentive was for For-
tis, Tiede replied: I believe Fortis will make
money during that time period, through addi-
tional lower maintenance costs. The recovery
is for the town, but Fortis will come out ahead
on this.

SAFETY ISSUE ON BRENT BLVD.
Students crossing Brent Blvd. at Crowther
Memorial Junior High School are living on the
edge. Coun. Pat Fule has asked that town staff
look at the possibility of putting in a flash-
ing crosswalk light over Brent Blvd., near the
bus loop, just before Maplewood Drive by the
school. Fule said school staff considers the area
an accident waiting to happen.
Having spoken to the associate principal,
they have tracked five near misses since Sep-
tember, said Fule.
Fule said adult drivers have been seen driving
through the crosswalk on the heels of crossing
students, before students reach the curb.
The cost to install a flashing crosswalk light
would be approximately $20,000.

The Town of Strathmores 2017 Mu-
nicipal Census is on hold until discus-
sion resolves some of Strathmore town
councils questions on the census and
citizens survey.
If approved, census takers would be
knocking on doors prior to the end of
April and presenting a citizens survey
with the census call.
Council has budgeted funds in the
2017 budget to conduct a Strathmore
census. Because it is a snapshot in a
specific time, council must set a date
and all questions and data will affect
that date, said Jennifer Sawatzky, legis-
lative service coordinator for the Town
of Strathmore.
Some discussion at the March 1 town
council meeting centred on whether a
census or survey was needed; and if
done, what costs would be incurred.
Previously a yearly census was con-
ducted, but is only required every three
years. The 2015 Strathmore census was
the last one completed.
I take into consideration the fact that
weve only recently received the results
of the federal census and I question the
value of doing another municipal cen-
sus so soon after the federal census,
said Coun. Bob Sobol. The more im-
portant part of this is, perhaps seeking
input from our population in regards to
questions that are known as a citizens
survey. I really suggest that we wait a
year, so that we can give our new coun-
cil an opportunity to go to the public
with questions they may have.

The Payroll Specialist is an important, integral part of the

Bisons extinguish Flames in second round

Phil Jackson, a 13-time NBA champion, would ac-
knowledge postseason events while coaching the
Los Angeles Lakers as: playoffs can turn on a trifle.
Looking back at the Alberta Midget Hockey League
Chrysler division semifinals between the Foothills
CFR Chemicals Bisons and the Calgary Flames, the
trifle occurred in Game 2 with 15.6 seconds remain-
ing in regulation.
Deep in the Flames zone, Kaden Hanas and Bran-
don Machado worked the puck to the side of the
net, where Tyson Scott stood on the doorstep, jam-
ming in the game-tying goal, forcing overtime.
Machado went on to score in overtime, putting
the Bisons in what they perceived to be a comfort-
able situation, up 2-0, heading back to Strathmore
with a chance to sweep.
The Flames had different ideas, as they stuffed the
Bisons in Game 3, 3-1 at the jam-packed Strathmore
Family Centre.
The Bisons were 15.6 seconds away from being
down 2-1 in the series and facing elimination when
they entered overtime of Game 4, March 6 at Father
David Bauer Arena.
Heading into the playoff series, it didnt seem like
the Flames were going to be as big of a problem
that they turned out to be. The Bisons handled them
fairly easily in the regular season, but, as we have
come to learn so many times, the regular season
doesnt mean a thing once the playoffs roll around.
The Flames knocked off the higher-seeded Red
Deer Chiefs 2-1 in the opening best-of-three series,
while the Bisons sat and watched, waiting 10 days
for their opponent.
The Herd opened the Chrysler division semifinals
with a 5-4 win March 2 at the Strathmore Family
Centre.
Zach Huber netted the eventual winner off an-
other picturesque saucer pass from Peyton Krebs. At
the time, Hubers marker put the Herd up 5-2.

They have that play down to a science, its be-
coming automatic, said Bisons assistant coach
Paden Grant.
But the Flames gave a glimpse at their tenacity
and resiliency, as they got within a trifle of sending
Game 1 into overtime, with furious play at the end
of regulation.
Boaz Bassen, Jackson Salt, Hanas and Landon
Melzer picked up the other markers, with assists go-
ing to Tyler Strath, Krebs (2), Huber (2), Cole Clay-
ton, Machado, Tyson Scott and Liam Belcourt. Ben
Laidlaw made 29 saves in net.
Game 2 saw the Bisons score the first goal for the
only game of the series. The Flames led 5-3 entering
the third period, as Hanas and Scotts late heroics
sent the game into overtime.
I dont even think I was supposed to be out
there, joked a raspy-sounding Scott, who lost his
voice in the third period.
Other Bisons goals came from Scott, Machado,
affiliated player Tucker Zdunich and Hanas, with
assists to Machado (2), Joel Krahenbil (2), Bassen,
Melzer, Blake Wells and Hanas.
The fans filed into the Strathmore Family Centre
for Game 3 and a chance to witness a sweep. But
Flames goaltender, Ben Howard, had different plans.
Howard had been torched for 11 goals in the two
regular season tilts and 11 goals in the first two
games of the series, but was a brick wall, turning
away 34 shots.
I thought he was good in the first two games
and he certainly had an outstanding afternoon to-
day, especially in the first period, said Flames head
coach Jeremy Blumes. I thought the Bisons created
some excellent opportunities and he answered the
bell for us.
The Bisons allowed three goals in the first period,
including a short-handed tally.
Salt looked to ignite the comeback, scoring his
second of the series 32 seconds into the second pe-
riod from Krebs and Clayton, but Howard was sim-
ply the best player on the ice.

The following night, the Bisons were kind enough
to spot the Flames another three-goal cushion in the
first period.
Bisons head coach Sandy Henry challenged the
competitive fire of his team between periods and
they responded.
I really called out their character between the
first and second. How can you dare bring that game,
to your fans and to the people that care about you?
said Henry. But there is character in there. Playoff
hockey is less about X and Os, and more about
heart and passion. We didnt have it at the start, but,
somehow, this team can find a way to get it when
they need to.
Hanas picked the corner and went top-shelf, and
Huber got to the rough areas of the ice, shoveling in
two goals 2:31 seconds apart.
At the 13:19 mark of the second period, Blake
Wells drove defenseman Ian Dubourdieu into the
boards, resulting in a five-minute major and a game
misconduct. He will be suspended for Game 1 of
the next series.
The third period was madness. Regulation ended,
tied 4-4, with the Bisons carrying the slight edge in
shots, 38-36. Laidlaw was doing everything he could
to throw a body part in front of the puck, including
making a pair of stops without his stick, from the
seat of his pants.
Henry rolled out the same line that scored the
overtime winner in Game 2, as Krahenbil and Mach-
ado were taking stabs at a loose puck, with captain
Brett Trentham stuffing in the winner at the 2:32
mark.
The Bisons, who finished one point below the
Calgary Buffaloes, will now head to Cardel Rec
South Arena, March 10 for Game 1 of the division
finals. Puck drop is tentatively set for 8 p.m. Check
the AMHL website and Bisons homepage for future
updates.
Its going to be a tough series, said Huber. We
have a couple things to tighten up at practice, but
we will be ready to roll.

Murray Chrysler hockey game
Novice hockey players from Strathmore Minor Hockey participated in the
Dodge Caravan Kids Event March 3 at the Strathmore Family Centre. The
fun hockey event saw several Murray Chrysler employees on the ice in a
scrimmage with the kids. The kids got the chance to play with the employ-
ees, while taking some instruction, and enjoyed a pizza party afterwards.

ringette provincial gold

Nobody could have imagined how the Zone 2
ringette squad would have performed this season.
It was an unbelievably surprising year, said
Zone 2 head coach Steve Rosenberg. They blew
my expectations out of the water. I was just hop-
ing we didnt lose every game this year.
Zone 2 hosted the U19A provincials this past
weekend in Rockyford. They clipped the Calgary
NW Grit 5-4 in the gold medal game, earning the
right to represent Alberta at the Ringette Western
Championships in Winnipeg, March 22-25.
The squad is comprised of players from com-
munities around the Calgary area, such as Strath-
more, Cochrane, Chestermere, Rockyford, Airdrie
and Indus.
Their provincial journey started with a 2-2 tie
against St. Albert and a 7-6 overtime loss to Leduc.
We lost our second game at the buzzer in over-
time and that was a wake-up call for us, said
Strathmore product Ashley LeCavalier, who scored
two goals in the championship game. We came
out a little nervous and I think we thought we
were going to play better in general.
From there, Zone 2 took off, with wins over
South Calgary (3-1) and Sherwood Park (6-4) in
the semis.
For Rockyford product Taneil Kalbhen, provin-
cials werent a big deal. Capturing the gold med-
al marked her fifth-straight season as provincial
champion.
This was my first year playing at the A level,
and I didnt know what to expect out of my team
and the competition, she said. We just got rolling
at the beginning of the year and didnt stop.

The U16B ringette provincials have descended
on Strathmore and the host team is looking to
catch some magic on home ice.
The Strathmore Ice, coached by Dean Hansen,
gets underway March 10, 9:30 a.m. when they
It hasnt been our best season on the ice, but
pleasure to coach, said Hansen. Our games are
always exciting and probably cost me a couple of
grey hairs.
The Ice finished 5-11 in league play and are
coming off a 4-2 victory Feb. 12 against the Indus
squad.
Hopefully we peak at the right time, said Han-
sen. I think a lot of teams might take us for grant-
ed as the host team, but we still have to play our
best every single game and hope for a little bit of

ing against each other, nobody knew what to ex-
pect playing in one of the higher caliber ringette
leagues in Alberta.
Shattering expectations, Zone 2 racked up tour-
nament wins in Strathmore, Calgary and Airdrie
this season, while going 11-4-1, finishing second
in league play.
Zone 2 will have 12 days to prepare for West-
erns in Winnipeg. They are the first Zone 2 team
to represent Alberta at a provincial competition.
Local girls on the team are: Julia Bishop (Lang-
don), Lauryn Eitzen (Strathmore), LeCavalier
(Strathmore), Jessica Clyne (Rockyford) and Kalb-
hen (Rockyford).

back in August and was awarded the event just
before Christmas.
As part of the provincials, the opening ceremo-
nies will take place March 10 at the Civic Cen-
tre. The evening will include a dinner, player and
coach introductions and a slideshow featuring all
the athletes. Pictures of the athletes as they grew
up playing ringette will be shown, as a fun time
capsule back to where the love of the sport began.
Throughout the tournament, there will be raf-
fles and a ringette store at the arena.
The Ice hit the ice for their second game on the
10th, when they host the Fort McMurray Fusion at
2 p.m. They will wrap up round robin play March
11 when they take on the Bowview Ambush at
12:15 p.m.
The bronze medal match is slated for March 12
(1:45 p.m.), followed by the gold medal game at
the Strathmore Family Centre.

A father-son project more than a decade in the mak-
ing was finally rewarded for all the years of tinkering
underneath the hoods of their cars.
Todd and his son Joel Blakney each entered a car
at the 51st annual Auto Value Parts Stores World of
Wheels car show Feb. 24-26 at the BMO Centre in
Calgary.
Todd walked away with the best display award, and
finished second place in his class for his 1970 custom
Psycobird.
Joel earned the Rising Star award for his work on
his 1968 Pontiac GTO.
Its a pretty cool feeling to both win an award. We
have never entered a show together, said Todd. Its
been in the back of my mind to create something like
this for a long time now.
Todd, the owner of Muscle Motors, said that Joel
has been running around with a wrench in his hand
at the shop since he was three years old. For his sons
14th birthday, he gave him the GTO as a gift and a
future project.
The goal was always to give him the car and use it
as a way to help catapult his career, said Todd. He
could have chosen to stay in the family business, but
he chose his own route with welding, and that prob-
ably makes me the most proud.
The custom orange GTO sat in his familys garage
and the garage at Muscle Motors for 11 years, while
they slowly worked away on it.
We started working right away, we stripped it all
down; every nut and bolt, the paint and the motor, is
brand new, said Joel.
Building cars from scratch isnt easy. Aside from the
labour needed outside of Todds busy workday, the
two put a lot of time and money in to acquire the
proper parts for their ride.
Ive always been around shops and other vehicles,
said Joel, a Strathmore High School grad. The hard-
est part was staying motivated, keeping the vision of
the end project in mind. Im happy I stuck with it, put
the effort in and now to get rewarded for it.
Todds project, what he calls the Psycobird, has the
front end of a Dodge and the body of a Plymouth. His
one-of-a-kind car was 15 years in the works.
There was a lot of give-and-take along the way for
the pairing. Todd came loaded with years of experi-
ence and Joel brought a different perspective for the
end goal.
One of the challenges was collaborating on ideas,
said Todd. One of the biggest debates was on the
paint colour for my car. I wanted more of an old-

paign as the top team in the division.
We knew we had a good team coming into the
year, but if you told me that we would only lose
twice, I would have laughed at you, said Chiefs
assistant coach Matt Gass. That never happens.
The local double-A midget team torched the
11-22-3 Central Alberta Selects 5-1 March 4 at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
After a scoreless, physical opening frame that
saw 150 penalty minutes handed out, Marshall
Wilson put the Selects in front with his ninth of
the year.
From that point onward, the Chiefs (31-2-3)
dominated, scoring five consecutive goals.
Chayse Hnatowich and Rylan Longmuir each fin-
ished with a goal and an assist, as other markers
came from Lucas Muenchrath, Kale Clouston and
Riley Romashenko.
Not only did the Chiefs control the standings,
they also owned the league leader board.
Isaac Benoit finished as the top scorer with 38
goals, 26 assists and 64 points. Hnatowich placed
third, with 26 goals, 29 assists and 59 points. Ro-
mashenko finished fifth with 22 goals, 26 assists
and 48 points.
That just goes to show you that we didnt get
this done with just one player or one line, said
Gass. This was the most talented group of for-
wards Ive ever worked with, and our defensive
core played most of the season down one of our
best skaters.
The Chiefs also boasted the best goaltending
tandem in the SCAHL. Ty Tarvyd led the league
with a microscopic 1.40 goals against average, car-
ried a .940 save percentage and never lost a game.
His 16 wins were good enough for second place.
Riley Stovka was right behind Tarvyd in every
category. He finished with a 13-2-1 record with a
2.42 goals against average and .900 save percent-
age.
The Chiefs now turn their attention to the play-
off tournament March 9-12 in Medicine Hat.
I definitely feel more pressure heading into
playoffs this year compared to last year. We only
lost two games all year; teams are going to be com-
ing at us hard. Its the type of tournament where
one bad goal, one bad period can end your sea-
son, said Gass.
The Chiefs opened the tournament against the
Okotoks Oilers Green (13-18-5) on March 10. They
finish the three-game round robin play March 11
against the Lethbridge Hurricanes (10-17-9). The
semis and finals are slated for March 12.
Winner of the South tournament will take on the
winner from the North tournament next weekend
in a best-of-three series to determine who will be
moving on to provincials.
Last season, the Chiefs lost to Red Deer in the
North-South series.

Just like they have throughout the
Foothills Athletic Council season, the
Holy Trinity Academy Knights stormed
their way to a pair of championships
over the weekend.
The Strathmore High School Spar-
tans senior mens squad entered the
finals down two starters, but brought
the energy early.
Unfortunately, the deeper, taller
Knights squad pulled away to the 85-
48 victory March 4 on home turf, cap-
ping off an undefeated season and de-
fending their title.
We were missing our two leading
scorers, to lose them from the lineup
was a big loss, said Spartans head
coach Matt Laslo.
The Spartans went punch-for-punch
with the Knights in an intense open-
ing quarter. Mackenzie Bain opened
with a three-pointer and a finger roll
at the rim, as the Spartans trailed 14-
13 after one.
Its nice to see us bring a lot of in-
tensity from the start of the game all
the way to the end, said Laslo. We
challenged our guys, knowing that we
were hurt. We wanted to make Holy
Trinity earn this and I think we did a
good job of that.
From there, the Knights started to
net some threes and sliced the Spar-
tans with pretty back-door passes, out-
scoring them 23-6 in the second frame.

They have been the top two teams all
season in the Chrysler division. Now, a
best-of-five series will determine who
earns the right to participate in the Al-
berta Midget Hockey League champi-
onship.
The Calgary Buffaloes swept the reg-
ular season series against the Foothills
CFR Chemicals Bisons, finishing one
point ahead of the Bisons in the stand-
ings, earning home ice.
Game 1 goes March 10 at the Cardel
Rec South Arena in Calgary. Game 2 is
set for Strathmore, March 12 (7 p.m.).
If necessary, Game 4 would return to
Strathmore March 16 (7 p.m.)
The Buffs are coming off a clean-
sweep of the Calgary Northstars. They
will have two extra days of rest over
the Bisons.
I dont think the extra rest matters
at this point, said Buffaloes assistant
coach Tyler Helfrich. At this age, the
kids can get their wind back easily and
they are playing for division title at this
point; that should be enough adrena-
line to get them going.
The Bisons iced the Calgary Flames
in overtime of Game 4, in a series that
was played more tightly than how their
regular season matchups played out.
Not wasting any time, Bisons head
coach Sandy Henry was back in the
film room 10 hours after his team ad-
vanced to the next round.
As for adjustments, there is one main
area of concern for the Bisons coaching
staff the first period.
The Flames outscored the Bisons 9-2
in the opening frames of their series,

The Buffs buried the most goals
scored (156) and allowed the fewest
(67). The Bisons werent too far back,
scoring 151 and yielding 76. Their re-
cords finished first and second, respec-
tively, across the AMHL.
Both teams have potency on the
rush, like to create offence off turn-
overs, we like to get out in transition
and skate, and so do they, said Henry.
It should be a high-flying series.
With the Buffs wrapping up their se-
ries ahead of the Bisons, Helfrich and
the rest of his staff were able to take in
a couple of the Bisons games.
Its clear that the Bisons are strong
on the back end. Both teams take pride
in their depth up front and are very
talented, said Helfrich. Its going to
come down to who wants it more.
The Buffaloes were the only team to
shut the Bisons out this season, when
they blanked the AMHLs second-high-
est scoring offence, 3-0 back on Dec. 11
at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Taylor Gauthier was magnificent,
stopping 31 shots to record the shut-
out. He was selected 10th overall by the
Prince George Cougars during the 2016
WHL draft.
The Buffs clipped the Bisons 5-2 in
the rematch.
The Bisons will be calling up a few
affiliated players for this series. Tyler
Petrie isnt quite ready to return from a
lower-body injury and Tarun Fizer will
not step on the ice this series. Blake
Wells picked up a game misconduct
during Game 4 of the Flames series,
and is suspended for Game 1.
Tucker Zdunich and Ryan Ries partic-
ipated in all four games last round with
the Bisons. Playing on a line centered
by Boaz Bassen, Zdunich picked up a
goal in Game 2 and Ries had a goal
waved off in Game 4, as the net was
knocked off its pegs.

Peavey Mart hosts beekeeping 101 workshop

Times Reporter learned what it takes to start their first hive; there is a

Hobby and small beekeeping is on the rise, said
Jest Sidloski, director of customer experience at Peavey
Mart. We turn a lot of these people into beekeepers
and we give them support every step of the way. Every
year the interest for these courses goes up.
Peavy Mart has been offering beekeeping 101 cours-
es for three years and have put on nine classes in four
different cities in Alberta. This is the first time theyve
held the course in Strathmore, and due to the good
turnout, they plan on holding an introductory to ex-
tracting course in late July.
The store started carrying beekeeping equipment a
few years ago. Once they started bringing in live bees
to sell, they decided they needed to start offering sup-
port and classes for beekeepers.
This class is for general knowledge so people who
are new to beekeeping can figure out whether they
actually want to pursue it or not, said Sidloski. A
fair portion of people who attend (these classes) are
already beekeepers and they just want a refresher.
The course teaches participants the basics: the his-
tory of honeybees, the differences between the hon-
eybees, what their positions are in the colony and dis-
eases and how to watch for them. Participants also
high failure rate in some beekeepers first year so it is
suggested they start with two hives
We put a strong focus on the safety of the bees,
thats our priority, said Sidloski. The reason we offer
this course and connect beginners to professionals is
that we cant have a bunch of new people doing bee-
keeping without any training because that would be
irresponsible. We want to make sure the people who
want to do it have the proper connections.
It is very important for everyone looking to get into
this industry that they ensure they are ready for it and
they receive more advanced training. Its not some-

ing outdoors is a family event, we re-
ally want to promote that.
The buffet-style meal included
dishes such as Morocca-braised
goose tagine with almonds, crispy
fried cougar with soy, honey and
sesame glaze, and spicy elk chili
with tomatillo, chipotle and 5 bean
medley among other rich dishes.
All the meat was donated by hunt-
er members of the WCWA, and the
dishes were prepared and cooked by
BubbaQ Smokehouse and Catering.
A silent auction ran through-
paintings, western jewelry and hand-
drawn sketches up for grabs.
The dinner is the clubs sole fund-
raiser during the year, apart from a
casino the WCWA works every three
years. The proceeds from the event
go back into conservation programs
such as releasing hen pheasants in
the county, planting trees, making
bird nests, and creating duck tunnels
and nests so birds may repopulate.
A lot of it goes into our youth pro-
grams and our youth shooting pro-
gram. We also pay for our youth to
go to camps in the summer to learn
survival skills and hunting skills, and
to get their license, said Carlson.
Its important because we do
all our work within the county of
Wheatland. Our youth programs
help keep youth in hunting, fishing
and outdoor events, as well as the
conservation side of it, so that it all
balances out and they can under-
stand why the hunting takes place
and why we also need to conserve,
said Carlson.
WCWA awards were handed out
for the 2016 hunting season, includ-
ing: wildlife photography, Cheryl
Koltusky; scenery photography,
Cheryl Koltusky; typical mule deer,
Justyn Koltusky, a club youth mem-
ber, with a score of 124 0/8; typical
white-tailed deer, Wayne Graham

It is with great sadness that we an-
nounce the passing of Lisa Dawn
Macdonald (Hartell) after a five
month battle with cancer. Lisa was born in Calgary,
Alberta on April 8, 1970 and passed away on March
1, 2017. Lisa is survived by her three precious sons,
Tate (Taylor), Beau, and Slade; parents Bob and
Yvonne Hartell of Strathmore; sister Lindy (Bjonna)

husband, Hamish in 2007; grandpa Albert Desmet;
grandparents Jack and Mag Hartell; and uncles
Jackie Hartell and Robert Desmet. Lisa was a free
spirit and she loved to dance, jog, and go camp-
ing. She married Hamish in 1993 and, shortly after,
they moved to The Plains Station in TeAnau, New
Zealand. After Hamishs passing, Lisa and the boys
moved back to Strathmore, Alberta. Lisa had many
struggles in her life and she battled them hard. In
the last two years she was back to her normal, fun-
loving self. Unfortunately, her biggest battle with
Leukemia was one she just couldnt defeat, but she
did put up a big fight. A celebration of Lisas life will
be held on Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Cheadle
Hall at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may
be made directly to the Wheatland & Area Hospice

She was born in Virden, MB on July 19, 1960 to
her loving parents Jack and Belle Stephenson. She
was predeceased by her parents and is survived
by her sons Jonathan and Shaun Watson, daughter
Courtney Canivet, friend and former spouse Leslie
Anthony Watson, sisters Joyce (Bob) Geldreich and
Debbie (John) MacLaughlin, brothers Bill and Da-
vid Stephenson, and extended family, including two
grandsons and many nieces and nephews. Lorraine
loved and was loved by her whole family. The family
would like to express their deep gratitude to all the
staff at the Southwood Care Centre for caring for
Lorraine. A memorial service will be held at a later
