ABSTRACT

Thequantitative-qualitative study determined the prevalence of

intestinal parasitism among street food vendors in selected areas of General

Santos City. It was conducted from the months of April to August, 2016. Its

respondents were the18 street food vendors in selected areas in General Santos

City. The quantitative data on the profile were obtained through a survey

questionnaire and the qualitative data were extracted from in-depth interview.

Fecal specimens, which were also taken from the respondents, were subjected to

experiment to determine the prevalence rate of intestinal parasitism infection

among the respondents. The data gathered on the profile were treated with

frequency distribution and percentage, while the data to determine the significant

relationship between the profile and the prevalence rate of intestinal infection was

treated with Pearson r andChi-square .

Significant finding revealed that out of 18 fecal samples, the single

infection with intestinal parasites was more common than mixed infections with

incident of twenty-two percent (22%), and twenty-eight percent (28%),

respectively. The intestinal parasites observed were

AscarislumbricoidesandTrichuristrichiura. There no significant relationship

between the prevalence of intestinal parasitism and the profile of the respondents.

The local government units, say, the City Health Office, could use the

results of this study as baseline data for designing programs for the street vendors

to level-up their awareness to prevent the prevalence of transmission of infection.

Moreover, a free de-worming program may also be conducted for adults.
