Collaborative Learning
Size of groups: Type of groups:

3 students per group There will be two groups with the lower level
students, three groups of the med level, and
one group of high level. This is for me to focus
my attention on the lower group to make sure
they understand what they are to due. .

Differentiated type of research to find

information about the topic.

No collaborative grouping is used in this lesson

Lesson Procedure:
Lesson Frame:

We will Research and compare the characteristics between the Sun, Earth and Moon.

I will Compare the differences and similarities between the Sun, Earth, and Moon by using
their characteristics.

Anticipatory Set: Time:

Before I begin the lesson I will play a live stream of Earth from Space. As that is playing I 3-5
will bring the students attention to the board. Where there I will have their names written
with their group and table color. Once they are settle down in their seats I will ask
students questions and have them answer them to see what they know about the topic of
the Sun, Earth, and Moon. Then we will lead into what they will be doing for the day.

Question(s): What is our solar system?

What is in the center of our solar system?
What characteristics do you already know about the Sun, Earth and Moon?

Instructional Strategy/Modeling: Time:

I will hand out their worksheet that every student will be responsible for filling out with 5
their group. I will direct them on what every group will be doing for their assignment and
what they are to research and read to put it on their venn diagram. (One student from
each group will grab a laptop.) They are to find characteristics about each one and as
well any differences or similarities among them. Make sure to tell them they need at least
five physical characteristics in each circle of the diagram.

Guided Practice: Time:

Explain what students are to do on their assignment ( Venn diagram ). Tell each groups 3
that I will be coming by as they get stared, with certain questions that I want some of the
members to work together to get the answer. Tell them it is okay if they dont find the
answer in the reading or vice versa. Have members help each other out to find it. Once
they find it I will later call on them to place it on the diagram on the screen.

Check for Understanding: Time:

Ask several students to go over the steps on what they are to do for their assignment 3
and what to do with the questions that I will hand out that they need to answer.

Question(s): Can someone sum up what you are to do for your assignment?
Are you supposed to answer the question on the piece of paper that I hand out?
When you answer the question what are you supposed to do with it?

Independent Practice: Time:

Each group will be handed a set of five questions of either the Sun, Earth or Moon. 15-20
They must have an answer to put on the board. As well they will continue to work
together or in pairs to find the characteristics of each the Sun, Earth, and moon on their
diagram that I will pass out. They will have about 15 to 20 minutes to research all the
information for each circle of the venn diagram.

Differentiation Plan for Independent Practice:

Group 1 Group 2 Group 3
Will be my lower group of kids This group would be my mid My last group is my high level
were I will focus my attention level group of kids and then group of students and I will be
more to make sure they are and now I will make sure they checking on them not that

having one member of the have for them as well reading responsible for finding the
group research. the information and information. If they are to
researching. finish fast I will ask for them
to find facts about the other
planets and see if they can
compare it to the Sun, Earth ,
or moon.

Closure: Time:

I will call on groups that have found their information to write it on the board to see what 10
they have research. Go through all the information and ask questions about the
information.

Question(s): Are there any other similarities or differences between each one that we
didnt talk about?
What were some facts that you discovered about their physical characteristics?

How will you I plan to

Cut down on the time it takes to pass out Have some of the material already set on the table. Ask
materials? Mrs.Gray to help hand out papers for me if she can.

Put students in groups/partners? Have students in groups of 3 students

Have students move to stations, or other Students will be moving to their new
parts of the room? (Moving to and from the groups at different tables. Have students

I want to call on a group to answer a
question.
Manage the classroom while working with I will have most of my focus on my lower
individual students or groups (if necessary). group of kids but I will spend time
walking around making sure every
student is doing their assignments. And
if so I will reward them with a sticker.
Ensure that differentiated activities/groups are Tell students that one group need more
not obvious to students? help and I knew they were capable to do
their assignment on their own.

Have seating chart ready to go and put their names on the board with the corresponding
color of the table.
Have question I want them to research ready to go on a note card so they can place it
on the venn diagram that I will have on the board.
Work on making the Venn diagram during the week or weekend to have
ready on the day.
Ask to see if you can laminate the diagram, if not buy clear tape to put on
it to protect it.
Once the lesson is done go back and rewrite the important information on
the diagram to hand back to Mrs.Gray so she can hang it up.
HAVE IPAD ON THE DAY!
And do not forget to bring the inflatable alien
Have index cards ready and bought to go on the day, as well print out the worksheet
and reading information.
