TITLE :
Freefall

OBJECTIVE :
Determination of velocity of a body moving under the influence of gravity.

APPARATUS :
i.! Ping pong ball
ii.! Meter ruler
iii.! Retort stand
iv.! Stopwatch
v.! Launch box

THEORY :
A body is said to be falling in freefall if the bodys motion is influenced by gravitational
force only. If air resistance is negligible, its motion can be described by using the
equation of motion. For a body released vertically to free-falling, its equation of motion
can be written as such:
! = # + %&'(i)
! ( = #( + 2%&(ii)
if # = 0, then
! = %&(iii)
Therefore,
#( = 2%(iv)

where, u= initial velocity, h=height, v=final velocity, g=gravitational force

* Equation (i) is the freefall equation that is dependent on time, while equation (ii) is
dependent on velocity.
* Equation (iii) and (iv) are used when the motion start from stationary which is initial
velocity is zero (u = 0)
APPARATUS DIAGRAM :

[ Floor ]

PROCEDURE :

1.! The apparatus is set up as in Figure 1.

2.! The launch box is fixed at h=50cm, by taking the reading at the bottom end of
the box. The launch box has a hole in it.
3.! The ball is released by drawing the hole cover. The time taken by the ball to
reach the floor is recorded.
4.! Repeat step 3 for two more readings.
5.! Repeat step 1 to step 4 for h = 80cm.
6.! Based on equation (iii), the velocity of the ball just before it reaches the floor can
be calculated.

DATA :

Height, h(cm) Falling Time, t(s) Average time, t (s)

50 32.4 31.9 32.4 32.2
60 35.2 35.1 35.2 35.2
70 38.2 38.3 37.8 38.1
80 40.4 40.6 41.00 40.7
CALCULATIONS :

1.! According to equation (iii), obtain the final velocity, V for height 50 cm and 60
cm, respectively.

2.! If the final velocity for the ball released at h = 50 cm is the initial velocity for a
ball released from height S, while the final velocity for the ball released at h = 80
cm is the final velocity for a ball released from height S, calculate S according to
equation (ii).

DISCUSSION :

During the experiment, The reading were taken several time and is averaged to get
more accurate and precise value. The error which may present in this experiment is
parallax error during setting of the height of the launch box form the floor.
Theoretically, the increase the height of the launch box to the floor, the increase the
falling time. The stopwatch is started as soon as the launch box is dropped on the floor
to avoid random error.

CONCLUSION :

The Velocity of a body moving under the influence of gravity is effected by the height
of the launch box to the floor.

QUESTIONS :

1.! Compare the height obtained by calculation and the height measured from the
experiment.
The height obtained by calculation and the height measured from the
experiment is closer to each other.

2.! State the difference between the values obtained from the calculation and direct
measurement from experiment.
The value which is obtained from the direct measurement is a bit higher than the
calculation.

3.! If air resistance is taken into account, what would the calculation value be like? It
is going to be closer to the experimental value.
If air resistance is taken into account, the calculation would not be effected
because the pendulum bob itself is heavy in weight. Even if the calculation value
is different, the value is going to be closer to the experimental value.
